Congratulations to our very talented dance
students who performed at the Central
Dance Festival this week. Our students
demonstrated skilful choreography and
performed a wide variety of styles and
moves ranging from Aboriginal to contempo-
rary dance. Our wonderful Indian dance
ensemble and senior contemporary group
were able to showcase some amazing
moves. This event is a celebration of Dance
in Public education. Special acknowledge-
ment and congratulations goes to Ms Claire
O’Halloran who was event committee
organiser and Ms Jenni Williams who worked
off stage ensuring smooth performance
transitions.
Last Friday 9th June saw the NITV (National
Indigenous Television) production team visit
our school to interview staff and students
about our highly acclaimed Aboriginal
language program. Students from 7Red as
well as Year 11 and 12 students were filmed
during their lessons and interviewed.
Although Indigenous language has been
taught at Woolgoolga High for many years,
recently the Aboriginal Language Course
has been introduced in NSW as a subject for
the Higher School Certificate and our staff
and students are leading this initiative.
From the Principal’s Desk
The NITV (National Indigenous Television) production team
visited our school to interview staff and students about our
highly acclaimed Aboriginal language program.
Tracksuit pants have recently been added to
our uniform and our onsite uniform shop is
well stocked to help students beat the cold.
They are particularly smart, lined for extra
warmth and look similar to our uniform
shorts. These navy full length pants come
with sky blue piping and are designed to be
quick drying. The unisex style is straight
legged but arrangements can be made for
those students who prefer elasticised hems.
The cost of these high quality pants is $45
and available on Wednesday and Friday
mornings at our uniform shop.
Congratulations to our North Coast Cross
Country team – great to see so many
students making it through to the State
Cross Country Championships (more details
on page 12). Similar congratulations to
teams with quality performances in the U15
Boys AFL, Drama Eisteddfod and Debating.
Reminder date : school returns for students

Algebra is the language of mathematics and
fluency in that language is key to your success
in maths, science, engineering and many other
fields.
Senior students wanting to improve their algebra
can come to Algebraics Anonymous in period 4

On Thursday 1st June the Woolgoolga High
School Library hosted the Coffs Harbour/
Clarence District of schools Sydney Acade-
my of Chess (SAC) Interschool Challenge.
Rick from SAC travelled from Sydney for the
event, claiming that it was the most smoothly
-run event the SAC has ever seen. Ten
schools from around the district sent
students to compete in the highly sought
after junior (primary school) and senior (high
school) divisions. Coordinator Megan Hart
was thrilled with the 70 participants that
competed on the day, with all students
representing their schools with pride and a
highly competitive spirit.
Schools involved in 2017 included Corindi,
Frank Partridge VC, Kororo, Mullaway,
Narranga, Sawtell and Woolgoolga Public
Schools for the junior division and Toormina,
South Grafton and Woolgoolga High School
for the senior division. A seven round swiss-
format competition was the schedule for the
day, with students being re-ranked each
round to compete against similarly ranked
students within their division. Congratula-
tions go to Frank Partridge VC Public School
and South Grafton High School, who were
the division winners on the day.
Special mention to Jake Adams and Callum
Roworth from the Woolgoolga High School team
who ranked second and fourth in the senior
division. School Principal Mr Guy Wright remarked
about the success of the day in that so many
schools could compete in this wonderful
opportunity. He spoke at the presentation ceremo-
ny about the benefits of chess and how it greatly
aids in developing the brain and problem-solving
ability of children.
Staff, from both the Sydney Academy of Chess and
Woolgoolga High School are looking forward to
hosting the tournament in 2018. Students have
expressed an interest in attending the event from
schools around the district when it occurs next year
in even larger numbers.

On Tuesday, June 13 Woolgoolga High School
had two debating teams travel to Grafton High
School to complete Rounds Two and Three of
the Premier's Debating Challenge. Our Year 10
team took on Grafton first and were awarded
the win. This leaves them undefeated and they
will progress through to the regional finals next
term as the winners of Zone 3.
The Year 9 team debated next and spoke
eloquently, beating Grafton again in the topic of
politics. Unfortunately the Year 9 team are not
able to progress to the next round. They debat-
ed valiantly, winning two of their three debates,
losing only to the Year 10 Woolgoolga Team in
round One.
Both teams were a pleasure to take away and
they represented their school proudly. Well
done, Woolgoolga!

June 5 to 7, Woolgoolga High Drama
students from Years 9 (pictured), 10 and 11
attended the Coffs Harbour Speech and
Drama Eisteddfod at the Jetty Memorial
Theatre. The students participated in groups
devised and improvised performances as
well as mime and solo monologues. Special
mentions must go to Zoe King of Year 11
who received 3rd
place for her individual
monologue, Matthew Dorahy of Year 10
who received a Highly Commended and
also assisted the casual teacher with prepa-
rations, and Lawson Porter of Year 9 who
rode his pushbike from Grafton to Coffs
Harbour to attend the event. Thank you to
everyone who was involved in the event.

Mrs Fluechter’s Year 7 Technology Mandatory class created a kite out of paper. They learnt
how to apply a marbled design onto the paper. They then had to measure the nylon tails and cut
them to size and attach them to the kite. Next they had to measure the string and wrap it
onto paddle pop sticks and attach the strings/handles to the kite. They went out and tested their
kite flying abilities. They previously had a lesson on learning how to fly kites safely.

Year 8 Technology Mandatory spent Term 1 with
Mrs Fluechter and Ms Duver preparing their
garden beds and planting their seeds and seed-
lings. They maintained their gardens down at
the Ag farm waiting patiently for the vegetables
to grow. During this week we harvested the
vegetables and the students were given the
opportunity to take some home. We will be
using some of the vegetables to prepare food
items in our Food practical lessons over the
next week. It has been a great opportunity to
speak to the students about current issues such
as the ones seen on the series “War on Waste”.
Stay tuned for more newsletter articles as the
students planted their Winter vegetables this
week.

Year 8 Tech Mandatory completed
their first Food Technology practical
this year. They made mini pizza. This
was after they had learnt about food
safety and hygiene, nutrients, knife
safety and the concept of paddock to
the plate. This class has been
growing their own vegetables down at
the Ag farm with the help of Mrs
Fluechter and Ms Duver. They hope
to harvest their vegetables this week
and get their winter crop in.

North Coast Cross Country results
Congratulations to the 30 Woolgoolga High students who compet-
ed at the North Coast CHS Cross Country championships last Friday
in Murwillumbah. All Woopi students ran really well, with five
students making the podium; crowned champions were Jaimon
Cowling (16 Boys) and Sam Burke (17 Boys), runner-up was Taylar
Briley (17 Girls AWD) and 3rd place getters were Madyson Cowling
(14 Girls) and Isaiah Koopmans (18 Boys). Official results have not
yet been received but apparently 11 WHS students have qualified
to compete at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships in
Sydney next term.
More details next newsletter. Pictured: Madyson Cowling, 18 years boys:

On Thursday 18th May Woolgoolga High
School went up against Grafton High School
in the second round of the CHS AFL
competition.
The Grafton team had a strong reputation in
AFL but this did not intimidate our boys on
their home ground. The first 3 quarters was
played with intensity from both teams. Beau
Robinson did well to lead the team as cap-
tain and Xander Pilon, Preston Oake, Em-
mett Weiss all made great tackles and kicked
well. Nothing prepared Grafton for the 4th
quarter, after a motivational speech from
Mr Chadwick triggered the goal-kicking
onslaught from Ethan Duncombe. The final
score WHS 83, GHS 38.
The team then progressed to round 3 against
Coffs Harbour on 2nd
June. Unfortunately they
lost by 20 points. Key contributors were
Reagan Scheuermann who kept the team to-
gether with plenty of communication. Eli An-
derson, Ned McLeod and Kade Levingston al-
so stepped up with the older boys. Ty David
and Thomas West both worked hard and en-
sured the ball was kept alive.
Thank you to all parents who came to support the team and all the efforts put in by players.
