I was privileged to travel to Sydney with one of my very
talented Year 12 Textiles and Design students, Jasmine
Hovermann and her mother for the TEXSTYLE Awards
night on 7th March. Ashley Wake, who was also selected
for this exhibition, was overseas and unable to attend.
“Tonight is the night! We can't wait to celebrate the
achievements of the 2017 Textile and Design
Student Recipients with you.” That was our welcome
to an amazing event held by The Technology Educators
Association at the Main Grandstand, Rosehill Gardens
Racecourse, Rosehill, Sydney.
A whole new range of creative, textile wearable and
creations were on display to inspire future HSC students
at the show showcasing student projects with a focus on
proficiency, creativity and innovation in relation to the
Stage 6 Textiles and Design Syllabus and Marking
Guidelines. Ashley and Jasmine’s projects also included
a written portfolio that explained their investigation into
their ideas for their projects, which resulted in a very
creative showcase.

I am pleased to announce our new Deputy
Principal is Lyndall Nickell. As Deputy Princi-
pal at Wagga Wagga High School Lyndall
comes with a wealth of experience, capabili-
ties and energy and I know she will be a re-
al asset to our school when she begins at
the beginning of Term 2. I would also like to
thank Phil Dalton and Wayne Bailey (Head
Teacher Science) for stepping up into these
leadership roles for this term. Both have
done a marvellous job.
The Science and Engineering Challenge or
Year 10 students will occur on Tuesday 11th
April. We are looking forward to working with
our local Rotary and Lions Clubs as well as
Newcastle University to make this day
another successful educational event on our
calendar.
What a great photo on the front page of this
newsletter. We are so fortunate to have such
great teachers and quality students at our
school.
It is extremely important for our school to
have up to date information about our |
students and their families. Over the next
few weeks, Office staff will be making some
calls to families to update details. Some of
this information is now used as a basis for
extra funding our school receives.
Our clothing pool is in need of donations of
second hand uniforms. If your child has
grown out of a uniform, we could issue it to
other students at our school as needs arise.

Toni Robinson President of the TEA gave a speech on the night, not only congratulating the students on
their fantastic Major Textile Projects but also expressing her appreciation to the executive of smaller region-
al schools for supporting their staff. Toni was delighted that Executives of schools were enabling both the
staff and students to attend and have their work recognised for its outstanding level of achievement. She
even went on to tell an anecdotal story of a Principal in a small regional area of Woolgoolga organising
mannequins to be delivered from Bonnyrigg High to Canley Vale High to then be transported to Rosehill.
She spoke of how she received a phone call from her front office staff explaining to her of an unusual event
taking place up at the office; that being the Principal Michael Bryce from Bonnyrigg was taking photos of
himself delivering the mannequins and messaging them to the Principal, Guy Wright of Woolgoolga High.
She was impressed at the lengths that Principals would go to ensure staff and students were supported.
It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to be recognised for their outstanding commitment to their
studies and their fantastic achievements. It was also a wonderful achievement for the school to get not one,
but two textile items selected for the exhibition.
As a teacher in a regional area I loved having the opportunity to view and analyse the exhibition – show-
casing the 2017 Textiles and Design – HSC MTP Works of Excellence. It was also a proud moment when a
photo of Jasmine’s work was also used in the marketing of the Stitches and Craft show where the Exhibi-
tion was being held.

Senior Talks
We were fortunate to have ex-student
Augusta Supple speak to our senior students
Thursday 8th March. Before speaking at our
school, she was the key note speaker at the
International Women’s Breakfast.
Augusta has had many opportunities since
attending Woolgoolga High School. Augusta
shared her journey with our senior students,
from her experience at university in Sydney,
through her many job opportunities, and how
she ended up in her impressive creative arts
position today. She shared stories of her trials
and tribulations and encouraged students to take every opportunity in life as she has. She shared
her experiences of rubbing shoulders with entertainment royalty and her thoughts about ‘Imposter
Syndrome’ and ‘Fake it until you make it’. She spoke about the wonderful staff at Woolgoolga High
School and in particular Gareth Berglund and how they have affected her life.
Her goal is to motivate young people to achieve their best and share her experiences to show it is
possible to achieve anything with the drive to do so, no matter where your beginnings are.
We would like to thank Augusta for her time spent with our students and hope that some of our seniors took away a positive view on their future options for a wonderful and fulfilling life.

A Heartfelt Tribute to
Mr Gareth Berglund
"Many of the most useful lessons at
Woolgoolga High happened in the music
rooms for me—playing music with other
people taught me about having the confi-
dence to play my part, listen to others and to
"just keep going" even if I played an off note.
So many things taught to me by Mr Berglund.
It was great to visit and see him and how
he's transformed the music room into The
Wall. It gives me great heart to know the
music continues!"

It was a very proud moment for Woolgoolga High School
when the Zonta Club of Coffs Harbour contacted us to in-
vite two of our Indigenous students to deliver the Acknowl-
edgement of Country at the International Women’s Day
Breakfast in Coffs Harbour on Thursday 8th March.
Thanks go to Kelly Hine for accompanying these girls to
the event.
Sherydan Simson of Year 12, a finalist in
the Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs
competition, organised a table of six Year
12 students to attend the event. The Year
12 Advisor, Karen Dorahy, had the pleasure
of accompanying them, along with
Sherydan’s mother,Kellie Simson.
Augusta Supple, proud Alumni of Woolgoolga High School,
was the Keynote Speaker at the IWD Breakfast. Her words
were truly inspirational and prompted the 300+ women in the
room to realise they can be strong and independent, and do
not need to be silent about gender inequality. She also spoke
very highly of the lessons she had learned at our great
school.

Girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 were reminded at assembly this week of the importance of protecting them-
selves by using social media appropriately.
Students have been offered ongoing support and assistance if they are unsure whether particular
uses of social media and digital technologies are deemed appropriate or inappropriate, safe or risky.
Activities such as posting or sending photos of themselves, requires students to seriously consid-
er the potential and long lasting effects. Parents and carers are asked to please monitor and sup-
port their teens to stay safe when participating in online activities.

Some personal highlights of this experience were “the
Spanish Dancer” and, of course, “Queen of Hearts” from
Alice in Wonderland!
The donations have started coming in, and we encourage
anyone reading this Newsletter to donate whatever they
can afford to this cause. Even if it is 50 cents, it all adds up
to a lot over time for a local family in need. Donations can
be left at the School Office, or passed on to Mrs Dorahy
through the students. Receipts for donations will be issued
on request for taxation purposes.
I look forward to sharing the final donation tally with you in
the next Newsletter.
It is “Wonderful” to see how large the collective “Heart” is in
our school,

Year 12 Adviser
Give it up for Red Cross — Year 12 Fundraiser
Year 7 having been studying a Design unit based on
Flight. We have designed and made parachutes,
gliders and this fortnight's activity was to design and
make three paper planes for two competitions. The
first was for the plane that flew the greatest distance
and the second one for the plane that flew for the
longest time. Students had to decide on the best
design for each.
The winners won a TANGO voucher for 1st, 2nd
and 3rd place. Zac Lye was a standout winning 1st
place in both competitions.
Year 7 Technology Mandatory
Woolgoolga High School’s Give It Up For Red Cross
Year 12 Fundraiser is progressing nicely, with over 30
Students, teachers and Parents (collectively) participat-
ing.
The Red Cross Woolgoolga Branch is very impressed
with the number of volunteers, the range of different
creative ideas adopted by the students, and the lengths
that “some people” have gone to, to draw attention to
themselves for the greater good! (Mrs Dorahy, Year 12
Advisor, accepted the challenge put to her from Wool-
goolga Red Cross members (the same challenge the
local Red Cross Volunteer members were using to raise
funds) to wear more feminine attire to work for a week –
no shorts were allowed and make up was to be worn
every day but Mrs Dorahy decided to make it even more
of a sacrifice and dress boldly “in costume”.

Friday, March 9th saw the majority of Year 7 attend Grafton Pool for a fun filled day of activities.
The weather held out for us allowing us to enjoy the day’s activities with the heavens only opening
up as we were leaving to return to school.
Activities designed to build positive relationships amongst peers were implemented and students had a blast with squeals of delight being heard from all areas of the pool.
As Year 7 Adviser I am tremendously pleased with the good conduct
and maturity shown amongst the cohort. I am also very pleased with
the way in which students supported one another especially during
the more challenging activities. Thank you Year 7 for being so
wonderful.

All of Year 7 had an amazing day with plenty
of laughs. The water slide and diving board
were by far the best, even Mr Green had a
go on the diving board! Overall it was an
awesome day; all of Year 7 want to go
again!

On 9th March Year 7 went to Grafton Pool.
The purpose of this trip was to get to know our
peers better whilst having fun. We went
through an abundance of activities such as the
diving board, pool, slide and we learned some
team working skills. Thank you to all the
teachers who made this great day possible.
Year 7 had an amazing time.

Last Friday, Year 7 went to Grafton pool. It was a fun and
exciting experience that I will remember forever!
Thanks Mr Green!
Lotus F.
I really enjoyed the Grafton pool
excursion. My favourite part was the
water slide followed by the diving board
but I was a bit disappointed that the top
diving board was closed. Overall it was
a great day.

Softball
Last month I went to Newcastle to represent the North Coast region at the NSW CHS State Softball Championships. As a team we worked really well together scoring one win and one tie out of nine games. We were all very proud of our efforts as we played amaz-ingly having never trained together and only meeting at the North Coast trials. Thank you Woopi High for giving me opportunity to play representative school softball. Ilana Bakon (Year 11)

The first of our two games was very challenging as
our competition was very strong. The second
match was a thriller against Orara High School
resulting in a draw.
All games were played with a high level of sportsmanship and enjoyment as it was many team
member’s last opportunity to represent Woolgoolga High School in Netball.
Congratulations to Abby Nudd and Pavan Singh for being selected in the MNC Zone Team.

On Tuesday, 27th February 30 boys turned up in extreme heat to three gruelling trials for the Open
Boys basketball team at Sportz Central Coffs Harbour. The team was then narrowed down to 10
players. We were lucky enough to have Yusuf Qaafow an Ex NBL player come and help select the
team.
The Woopi Open boys’ first game was a tough one against Grafton High which was stacked with
Seniors. The Woopi team consisting of players from Years 9 to 11 did a great job averaging 8 points
a quarter against a highly skilled and big team. The boys went down 60-24. Not once did the boys
drop their heads. A stand out in this game was Levi Davison and Jacob Butterworth-Harvey who
played both offensively and defensively and Conan Brisley who had to dig deep to play nearly a full
game. Unfortunately this meant the boys were knocked out. The boys then had a game against Jet-
ty and a third game against Bellingen. The boys went down in both these games but enjoyed the ex-
perience. Best player of the day from the coach goes to Jacob Butterworth-Harvey who gave his all
every game and never gave up. He played an excellent defence each game and contributed to most
offensive plays. Well done.
A big thank you to Bellinger Valley Braves for the loan of a set of singlets for the day and to Yusuf
Qaafow for coaching the boys in their first game.

AMBULANCE SCHOOL COVER EXCURSIONS
We have been advised that the Ambulance Service of NSW has
reciprocal health care agreements with all Australian states except
Queensland and South Australia.
This means that, even though Woolgoolga High has Ambulance
School Cover for students who have an accident or fall ill whilst at
school or at an organised school activity, they are not covered while
on school excursions to Queensland and South Australia.
Only students whose parent/guardians hold a Commonwealth
Government Health Care Card or have private health insurance
(including ambulance-only cover) are possibly covered when on a
school excursion to Queensland or South Australia. It is strongly
recommended that parents/guardians who do have cover with
a private health fund, check their family’s eligibility with
regards to travel to all the states.
