"When am I going to use this in real life?"
Every Maths teacher is asked this at least three times a
week. For students with maths skills, in the 21st century,
the answer to that question is "This will be how you
make your living". The demand for maths skills in the job
market is enormous and people with these skills are
earning a median income of $160,000 per annum.

From the Principal’s Desk
All staff who have participated in the Connecting to
Country program believe it to be an exceptional
educational experience. I would like to thank our
local Aboriginal community.
What a fantastic mathematics excursion to Sydney – nothing but positive feedback has been
received. Well done to the Mathematics staff, in particular Mr Young.
Our students performed well at the Winter Warrior competition at Lake Keepit. It was great to see
our students on local television. Well done Ms Hyder.
For the past three days, 30 staff from Woolgoolga High and surrounding schools have participated
in a Connecting to Country program led by Blake Cusack and Kelly Hine. They invited many of our
Aboriginal elders into our school and immersed them in Aboriginal culture visiting significant local
Aboriginal sites. All staff who have participated in this program believe it to be an exceptional
educational experience. I would like to thank our local Aboriginal community.
Last Thursday and Friday, Blake Cusack and Jo Hine travelled to Darwin to attend the international
PULiiMA Indigenous Languages and Technology Conference. Blake presented a workshop
explaining her role and journey in both Woolgoolga High School and the Muurrbay Language
Centre. Blake spoke passionately about our language program whereby all 850 students in our
school study Aboriginal language and culture for 100 hours. Many participants at the conference
were very impressed with what our school is delivering to all our students. Well done Blake and Jo.
Next Monday our upcoming school leaders will speak on assembly to help staff and students
decide on our prefects for 2020. Good luck to all those students involved.
Please keep 10 September open for parent teacher interviews from 3.15pm.
Until next time

The Maths staff at Woolgoolga High School want to see our students positioned and ready to take
advantage of these opportunities; to be able to have well-paid and fulfilling careers. To help our stu-
dents see these options, we recently took a group of our best Year 9 maths students to Sydney to
explore what those career options might be.
We visited many workplaces and sites to see the application of maths outside the classroom. Host-
ed at HMAS Watson students learned how, using maths, submarine commanders avoid oncoming
warships. We visited the headquarters of Westpac Bank to learn how maths helps detect and pre-
vent credit card fraud. At the Sydney Observatory we learned how maths is used to understand the
universe and our place in it; and at Luna Park we learned how maths is used to design rides and
games of chance.
The students also spent time hands on doing robotics at the Australian Museum and doing trigo-
nometry and statistics in the Lane Cove National Park.
Woolgoolga High School is very proud of this group of students who received positive comments on
their behaviour and excellent maths skills everywhere we went.
We look forward to doing it again. Our sincere thanks to Westpac and the Navy who not only hosted
our students but freely spent hours in preparation and planning for the events.

"When am I going to use this in real life?" Well, like this:
- Doing robotics - Detecting fraud - Being a scientist - Fighting naval battles
Managing a national park or be an environmental scientist? Turns out you need:
- Trigonometry - Statistics - Geometry - Rates and Ratios

WHS takes out Winter Warrior 2019
The group of 32 travelled to Gunnedah on Wednesday staying overnight at Lake Keepit Sport and
Recreation Centre to be ready for competition the next morning. Participation in this annual event
is open to all students in Years 9, 10 and 11 and encourages teamwork, resilience and good
healthy competition.
Woologoolga High School took out the open males and mixed team sections while our senior
Year11 team were commended on their fancy dress bid as pink ‘Pigs in Mud’.
For all the action shots, video and news coverage, go to our school facebook page and follow the
links.
There was mud, sweat and cheers as Winter
Warrior 2019 was run and won at Lake Keepit
on Thursday 15 August by Woolgoolga High
School.
It took the winning team, three hours and
eleven minutes to cross the finish line of the
15km endurance race which included a 5km
bush run, 2km log-and-tyre carry, and a 7km
obstacle course with a maze run, a kayak leg,
golf and water challenges and dozens of mud
pits.

Teacher Training Day at Woolgoolga High
We were fortunate to have Timm O’Regan, who is a Ceramicist,
and the S & S Wholesales team organise a ceramic workshop
for Visual Arts staff in our region of schools. Twelve staff from
both public and private high schools in our local area participat-
ed in the workshops.
Staff looked at new ways to incorporate historical, cultural and
contemporary uses of ceramics into teaching and learning
programs. We were then involved in a variety of practical work-
shops using ceramics such as textured slab techniques, making
texture tools for the classroom, embossing, clay etching, uses
for underglaze and Graffito underglaze paper.
To incorporate skills learned we combined techniques to create
a Keshiki pot that could be used as a task to teach the skills in
the classroom.
The day was very busy learning many new skills that will benefit
students in our region. Everyone that attended really enjoyed the
opportunity to work collegially with staff from other schools and
we all went back to our schools with new skills and ideas in our
teaching kit.

Year 10 Food Technology have investigated preservation
techniques and methods of sterilising which has culminated in the
production of Preserved Apple Jam. These traditional methods were
new to most students.
Pictured: Mya Featherstone and Lily Robson's Apple Jam.
Food Technology
Year 11 Food Technology students were excited to learn how to make shortcrust pastry and to
test their understanding of how gluten functions in pastry making. They also created custard
whilst applying their understanding of functional properties of starch in the form of gelatinisation.
With some added vitamins and minerals in the form of fresh fruit, the flans were a visually appeal-
ing and tasty practical experience. The flans were styled and photographed in the light box and
then consumed in entirety!

The annual New Arrivals Picnic Day was held in bright sunshine Friday 23 August in the open
lawn area of the Botanic Gardens, Coffs Harbour. This fun gathering gave new arrivals to our
school community the opportunity to enjoy a day of friendship and to link with others that have had
similar experiences. It is an opportunity to share stories, connect through culture and relax in an
atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. Students and their friends from Woolgoolga High
School joined newly arrived students from six other Coffs Harbour schools to play sport, laugh and
generally have fun! One of our newly arrived Afghani students in Year 7 recounts the day in her
writing.
New Arrival and Friends Picnic Day
On Friday we went to the Botanic Gardens in
Coffs Harbour for a picnic day. First we went
to the Primary School to get the children on
the bus. We went to the Botanic Gardens.
There were lots of people there. The other
students started playing soccer and cricket.
We sat down near the trees. My teacher gave
me tangerines, cookies and chips. It was a
very beautiful place. We played soccer. We
took photos with our friends. We played
handball. It was a fun day. We also went to
other places in the garden.
My mother cooked pizza, chips and soda for
lunch. After that we took photos of all the
children together and we went to the bus and
came back to school. We waited for the bells
and went home. We told our mother and
father about the picnic day at home.
