From the Principal’s Desk

I have returned with many new ideas, how-

ever, I am open to other ideas and over the

near future will once again be looking to

work closely with all in our community to

make our school “the” leading school in

NSW offering the best opportunities for all

of our students.

Mr Henderson has been an exceptional

leader of the school over the past term as

has Mrs Bear who had a term as Deputy

Principal. Lindy Schofield has also been a

solid performer following up truancy as

Head Teacher Administration.

I am looking forward to Super Saturday

(Excel Class) tomorrow and will unveil a

new and exciting strategy which will ensure

the best education for some of our most

talented students.

I would like to thank Rotary for their continu-

ing support of our school. The article on the

front page re Berach is a testament to this

support.

It is great to be back as Principal of Woolgoolga High School.

After leaving at the end of June, I realised, in fact quite quickly,

that I was not ready for the quiet life of retirement. I am looking

forward to leading the school in many new and exciting avenues

over the coming years.

We have had two new staff appointed to our

school. Mr John Chadwick joined the Tech-

nology faculty but is also a Mathematics

and Science teacher. Beginning in 2016,

Ethan Hourigan will be teaching in the

English faculty. Ethan is a targeted

graduate and as such has been identified

as a quality beginning teacher.

Our Year 12 students are indicating they

are very happy with the first few HSC

papers. Good luck to our HSC students with

the rest of your exams.

The next trial of the Year 8 Collaborative

Science testing will take place on Monday.

We are fortunate to be participating in this

innovative initiative that tests our students

on collaborative online tasks across schools

in real time.

Until next time

Students’ Photographs

There are many occasions where we would like to

publish photographs of students involved in various

school activities, including reports for the local papers,

school newsletters, and the annual report and on our

school website.

If you do not wish your child’s photograph to be used

for these purposes, please notify the school in writing.

Working collaboratively online –

assessing skills for 21st

century living

Working collaboratively together in an online environment is an

increasingly common part of twenty-first century living and working.

ACARA, along with the NSW Department of Education, is part of a

global project which includes education agencies in Ireland and

Sweden. The project is investigating the development of innovative

high-quality online assessment methods and tasks that will give

reliable data on students’ collaborative problem solving skills.

Collaborative problem solving online assessment involves students

working together to solve tasks. For example, working with another

student online to find out why the fish are dying in a creek or why an

electric circuit is not working. The tasks assess the knowledge, skills,

behaviours and dispositions that will assist students to live and work

successfully in the twenty-first century and which are included in the

Australian Curriculum as general capabilities.

From 19 October, a week-long trial of online tasks will occur in twenty-

one schools from across Australia. This follows an initial test run of

one online task in a small number of schools in NSW in July.

The results of the trial will help ACARA better understand how to de-

velop valid and reliable online assessments of collaborative problem

solving skills that teachers may be able to use in their classrooms.

On Monday 19 October,

Woolgoolga High

School Year 8 students

will participate in the

second Collaborative

Online Testing Trial.

Safety First

Parents, carers and students are reminded not to use the staff car park for

dropping off or picking up their children, unless using the disabled parking

bays.

Our car park is very congested, especially on rainy days directly before

school begins and after school finishes. Parking is avail-able at the front of

the school for safety and a covered walkway for students’ convenience leads

from the bus bay into the grounds.
