Here we are, practically at the end o the second month of 2013. Perhaps some of your New Year’s resolutions may have already

been forgotten, but if finding a new place is still top-of-mind, we hope you’ll find this magazine helpful.

As you go about your search and visit potential locations, be sure to get a feel for each company and the staff. You should be comfortable and courteous asking questions and in turn you should expect to be treated with consideration and respect. Think twice about any property management company that doesn’t willingly provide any information you respectfully request.

Putting the customer first and offering the best quality rental space for your money is a property management company’s ultimate goal. Once you find the perfect space, don’t hesitate in going for it and making it your own. Hopefully it is one of the easier resolutions you may have on your list this year.

don’t be taken by surprise when you move into your new apartment! Do your research first and make sure your needs are being met at your new home.

There are plenty of little things you should check out before you sign your lease. Don’t just assume that parking or utilities are included – ask. Don’t just guess that there’s a bus somewhere close by – check. And don’t just assume that you’ve lucked into a great property management company – do your homework. Find out if they’ve got any awards or certifications too.

Other unfortunate surprises include furniture that won’t fit. While an apartment may seem spacious, you should take actual measurements to ensure. Often the configuration of a space can pose a challenge to placing furniture because of windows, doors, the room shape or the location of the cable outlet. You don’t want to find out on moving day that your couch can’t come with you or that you need to downsize from a king mattress to a double.

If you’re not familiar with the neighbourhood, take a walk or a drive. See what’s in the community and where the amenities that you really need are located. Not good to be more than a short walk to the bus if you rely on public transit, and you might want to see where your child’s school is, how far the park is or how close the grocery is, so that there are no surprises!

Childproofing checklist for electrical safety

You’ll find hundreds of childproofing checklists on the internet these days. What’s

missing, though, is information focused on electrical safety childproofing. here’s some essential information from the canadian office of the electrical safety Foundation international (esFi):

• Reduce the risk of electrical shocks or burns by making electricity receptacles safe. Tamper resistant receptacles (TRRs) have a built-in shutter system to keep budding scientists from sticking objects into the receptacle slots. TRRs look like ordinary outlets, but they’re designed with spring-backed cover plates that close off the receptacle slots. Plugs can still be inserted and removed as usual but other items can’t be inserted. This type of TRR is considered far more reliable than older-style receptacle covers, which can be pried off.

Childproofing checklist for electrical safety

You’ll find hundreds of childproofing checklists on the internet these days. What’s

missing, though, is information focused on electrical safety childproofing. here’s some essential information from the canadian office of the electrical safety Foundation international (esFi):

• Reduce the risk of electrical shocks or burns by making electricity receptacles safe. Tamper resistant receptacles (TRRs) have a built-in shutter system to keep budding scientists from sticking objects into the receptacle slots. TRRs look like ordinary outlets, but they’re designed with spring-backed cover plates that close off the receptacle slots. Plugs can still be inserted and removed as usual but other items can’t be inserted. This type of TRR is considered far more reliable than older-style receptacle covers, which can be pried off.
