i haven’t moved in about five years now, but my husband and I have both moved numerous times. We’ve both experienced moving from one province to another. We both had our fair share of room mates. We both

lived in our own apartments before we met. When the time came to move in together 10 years ago, we faced that big dillemma: whose apartment? It was actually an easy decision. I loved his building, but we decided to move into a new apartment within the building so that it would be “Our First Place.”

Looking back, it was the right move for us. We’ve moved twice since Our First Place – once to accommodate our growing family, and the second when we realized we needed to choose a family-friendly community to raise our kids. Our preferred community was the right fit while we were young socialites, but we wanted to trade the nightlife and stylish boutiques for playgrounds, daycare and a good school.

Needs change, people change and, luckily, apartments change. Real estate can be a tricky thing and it’s hard to focus on our personal needs. We were happy to rent apartments because we knew there would be change. We weren’t ready to invest in real estate and, had we bought and sold those many times leading up to our current home, we would have gone through serious expense and not enjoyed the benefit of selection that we had in our various apartments. Renting is an amazing opportunity. It has many lifestyle benefits and offered us a lot of freedom.

If a full wall of these bright colours is too much for you, paint them above your cabinets only or even inside cabinets with glass doors to liven up the room.

No one enjoys going through the motions of spring cleaning and, unfortunately for you, this is not a list on how to make cleaning easier or more enjoyable - that doesn’t exist. Spring cleaning is just one of those things you have to do. Yes, even if you’re moving out of your rental July 1st (nice try).

Seriously, dust and dirt can get into some crazy places and even if you don’t see it right now, you will once you start cleaning. So pick a day, one day – any day – where you can get down and dirty and get this dust-off with your home over with. Your pet, partner, roommate and yourself will be thankful once it’s done!

With that said, here are some dos and don’ts to ensure you get the job done right:

DO CLEAN CEILING LIGHT FIXTURES // DON’T FALL FROM LADDER

Spring cleaning is all about cleaning the little things we ignore or forget on a daily bases. Think about dusting off light fixtures, blinds and all of those hard to reach places. Just remember safety first and don’t fall off any chairs or ladders.

DO CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIDGE // DON’T TASTE UNDISTINGUISHABLE SUBSTANCES IN SAID FRIDGE

Who knows what lays at the back of your fridge and just because you’re cleaning it out doesn’t mean you have to find out either. Avoid food poisoning by checking the expiry date on any sauces, pre-packaged meats and anything else you thought was a good idea to buy but never eat (fancy named cheese, exotic fruit, etc). The rule of thumb is if you don’t know what the product is or how you’re suppose to eat it or cook it - throw it out!

DO PURGE ANY UNNECESSARY ITEMS // DON’T PURGE YOUR ROOMMATES UNNECESSARY ITEMS

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR JEAN JACKETS, RAIN PUDDLES AND THAT FIRST SIP OF ICED LATTES; AH YES, SPRING! Soak in all of those small seasonal enjoyments, because it’s also time for disinfectant sprays, Swiffers, and finding that sweater that

you’ve been looking for all winter under the couch.

No one enjoys going through the motions of spring cleaning and, unfortunately for you, this is not a list on how to make cleaning easier or more enjoyable - that doesn’t exist. Spring cleaning is just one of those things you have to do. Yes, even if you’re moving out of your rental July 1st (nice try).

ARE YOU ALONE IN THERE?

Seriously, dust and dirt can get into some crazy places and even if you don’t see it right now, you will once you start cleaning. So pick a day, one day – any day – where you can get down and dirty and get this dust-off with your home over with. Your pet, partner, roommate and yourself will be thankful once it’s done!

With that said, here are some dos and don’ts to ensure you get the job done right:

DO CLEAN CEILING LIGHT FIXTURES // DON’T FALL FROM LADDER

Spring cleaning is all about cleaning the little things we ignore or forget on a daily bases. Think about dusting off light fixtures, blinds and all of those hard to reach places. Just remember safety first and don’t fall off any chairs or ladders.

DO CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIDGE // DON’T TASTE UNDISTINGUISHABLE SUBSTANCES IN SAID FRIDGE

Who knows what lays at the back of your fridge and just because you’re cleaning it out doesn’t mean you have to find out either. Avoid food poisoning by checking the expiry date on any sauces, pre-packaged meats and anything else you thought was a good idea to buy but never eat (fancy named cheese, exotic fruit, etc). The rule of thumb is if you don’t know what the product is or how you’re suppose to eat it or cook it - throw it out!

DO PURGE ANY UNNECESSARY ITEMS // DON’T PURGE YOUR ROOMMATES UNNECESSARY ITEMS

The change of season is the perfect time to clean out your closet, junk drawers and anything else in your home that doesn’t fit, doesn’t work or is just plain ugly. A word of caution: purging unnecessary items is highly exhilarating, but throwing out your roommates ugly painting or onesie only seems like a good idea. Be mindful or their belongings.

Averaging at $1132, Ottawa is around the national average for rentals, and they’ve made it to the playoffs this year, beating out Toronto, which is all the capital city’s citizens really care about, since they don’t have to worry about record-setting rental values pricing them out of the market!

6. WINNIPEG:

With an average price of $969, Winnipeg is on the more affordable end of the rental spectrum – but with no Stanley Cup wins, it’s unclear where the city is spending money, since it’s clearly not rent or hockey.

7. MONTREAL:

With 18 cup wins, this city has the lowest rental price of $730. Les Habitants may have a thing or two to teach the ever-warming west coast about something we east coasters like to call skating.

Check out the average rental prices of 2 bedroom homes in Canada’s 7 NHL cities - they rank as some of the most expensive according to the CMHC in 2014.

1. VANCOUVER:

With an average rental price of $1281, Vancouver tops the list as the most expensive NHL city in Canada, and with zero Stanley Cup wins under their belts, it would seem Vancouverites prefer to spend their money on their lifestyle more than hockey players.

2. TORONTO:

This metropolitan city peaks at around $1213 per rental. This hockey-loving city has 16 Stanley Cup wins, but nothing since 1967, now coined, “the last good year.” It seems Torontonians will see many more rising rental costs before another cup win.

3. CALGARY:

You can purchase pieces that are free standing, such as my personal favourite, large floor-standing mirrors. Mirrors are a great way to make a room look larger and feel more upscale. Your second option is using stick-on hooks (you can find these at any home improvement store) that are guaranteed not to create surface damage and can hold quite a lot of weight. There is a wide range of sizes and styles available that will suit your undressed-wall’s needs!

VISUAL INTEREST. Create some visual interest in your rental unit by placing a large, floor-to-ceiling, free standing book shelf to cover one of your empty walls and to make use of your vertical space. This can easily be a feature wall, and a great way to show off your belongings. Make sure whatever you place on the shelves are at varying heights. Book shelves aren’t only for books anymore- you can dedicate a shelf for your glassware including vases of different colours and sizes, and you can also purchase baskets to place on a couple shelves that serve as great storage and a great place to hide clutter.

COLOURS, PATTERNS AND TEXTURES. Liven up the space with different colours, patterns and textures. When mixing patterns, make sure the scales differ, for example, match a large-scale floral with a small-scale stripe. You can bring in these elements in varying ways. Throw cushions, area rugs, bedding and upholstery are just a few options. Be creative and let your style shine through.
