i haven’t moved in about five years now, but my husband and I have both moved numerous times. We’ve both experienced moving from one province to another. We both had our fair share of room mates. We both

lived in our own apartments before we met. When the time came to move in together 10 years ago, we faced that big dillemma: whose apartment? It was actually an easy decision. I loved his building, but we decided to move into a new apartment within the building so that it would be “Our First Place.”

Looking back, it was the right move for us. We’ve moved twice since Our First Place – once to accommodate our growing family, and the second when we realized we needed to choose a family-friendly community to raise our kids. Our preferred community was the right fit while we were young socialites, but we wanted to trade the nightlife and stylish boutiques for playgrounds, daycare and a good school.

Needs change, people change and, luckily, apartments change. Real estate can be a tricky thing and it’s hard to focus on our personal needs. We were happy to rent apartments because we knew there would be change. We weren’t ready to invest in real estate and, had we bought and sold those many times leading up to our current home, we would have gone through serious expense and not enjoyed the benefit of selection that we had in our various apartments. Renting is an amazing opportunity. It has many lifestyle benefits and offered us a lot of freedom.

“The kitchen is the most-used room in the house and the area where family and friends tend to gather, so it’s the perfect place to add colour and personality to a home,” Goldman said. Still, it’s important to choose kitchen colours wisely, she cautioned, as some are better suited for this multipurpose environment than others.

“Warm, uplifting colours, such as yellow, red and orange, and soft shades of grey, violet, blue and green, are known to be more conducive to appetite-building, entertaining

and conversation,” she said, explaining that CIL paint took these findings into

account when developing its new palette.

CIL paint’s Culinary Collection brings together the brand’s top kitchen colour

recommendations from its existing paint line-up. “No matter what the look or

said. For starters, she offered these suggestions as good choices for:

especially well in a modern kitchen. Try Oyster Bay (90YY 63/044 SE48) or Barley

WHIP UP DELICIOUS KITCHEN DECOR WITH PAINT

Beige (30YY 68/024 DL50) grey from CIL paint as a base, accented – on one wall or through accessories – by a favourite pop colour, such as turquoise, tangerine or raspberry. Other striking wall colour options, particularly in kitchens with stainless steel appliances, are lemon yellow or apple green. If a full wall of these bright colours is too much for you, paint them above your cabinets only or even inside cabinets with glass doors to liven up the room.

COUNTRY KITCHENS: Complement wood cabinetry by painting the walls cozy shades of terra cotta red, such as Burnt Pumpkin (24YR 12/447 DL08) by CIL paint, warm orange such as Persimmon Berry (60YR 26/605 DL10), or light sage green such as Cabbage Patch (90YY 62/264 MC21), creating a welcoming space reminiscent of open fires and roasted foods. Don’t know which colour to use? Simply identify the predominant undertone of your cabinetry or flooring – yellow, orange or red, for example – and choose a paint colour with the same base.

SMALL KITCHENS: Make a small space appear larger by minimizing the contrast between the walls and cupboards. Choose a palette of colours with similar tonal value – such as Peach Punch (56YR 48/398 CP10) orange, Ripe

Another option is to paint a focal wall a bolder colour and the other walls a lighter version of that colour. Use the kitchen’s vertical space to stack rows of shelving or add upper cupboards extending to the ceiling to maximize storage and the visual height of the room.

WINDOWLESS KITCHENS: If you can’t see the outside from your kitchen, consider bringing the outdoors in through the use of colour, such as optimistic shades of light green and yellow. A soft yellow – such as Citron Ice (53YY 83/348 CP19) by CIL paint, for example – can simulate the look and feel of sunshine. Crisp, white paint on trim, ceilings, mouldings and doors will help brighten the walls even more. For maximum brightness, install the right combination of artificial lighting in the room – including task, overhead and ambient lighting – and use high gloss paint on doors and trim to reflect the existing light.

“When choosing paint colours, take into account the colour and design of your cabinetry, countertops, tiles, moulding, appliances, lighting and flooring,” Goldman said. “And remember that paint isn’t just for walls – freshly-painted cabinets, tables, chairs and other decorative objects go a long way in helping to create a spectacular kitchen decor.”

Seriously, dust and dirt can get into some crazy places and even if you don’t see it right now, you will once you start cleaning. So pick a day, one day – any day – where you can get down and dirty and get this dust-off with your home over with. Your pet, partner, roommate and yourself will be thankful once it’s done!

With that said, here are some dos and don’ts to ensure you get the job done right:

DO CLEAN CEILING LIGHT FIXTURES // DON’T FALL FROM LADDER

Spring cleaning is all about cleaning the little things we ignore or forget on a daily bases. Think about dusting off light fixtures, blinds and all of those hard to reach places. Just remember safety first and don’t fall off any chairs or ladders.

DO CLEAN OUT YOUR FRIDGE // DON’T TASTE UNDISTINGUISHABLE SUBSTANCES IN SAID FRIDGE

Who knows what lays at the back of your fridge and just because you’re cleaning it out doesn’t mean you have to find out either. Avoid food poisoning by checking the expiry date on any sauces, pre-packaged meats and anything else you thought was a good idea to buy but never eat (fancy named cheese, exotic fruit, etc). The rule of thumb is if you don’t know what the product is or how you’re suppose to eat it or cook it - throw it out!

DO PURGE ANY UNNECESSARY ITEMS // DON’T PURGE YOUR ROOMMATES UNNECESSARY ITEMS

The change of season is the perfect time to clean out your closet, junk drawers and anything else in your home that doesn’t fit, doesn’t work or is just plain ugly. A word of caution: purging unnecessary items is highly exhilarating, but throwing out your roommates ugly painting or onesie only seems like a good idea. Be mindful or their belongings.

With an average rental price of $1281, Vancouver tops the list as the most expensive NHL city in Canada, and with zero Stanley Cup wins under their belts, it would seem Vancouverites prefer to spend their money on their lifestyle more than hockey players.

2. TORONTO:

This metropolitan city peaks at around $1213 per rental. This hockey-loving city has 16 Stanley Cup wins, but nothing since 1967, now coined, “the last good year.” It seems Torontonians will see many more rising rental costs before another cup win.

3. CALGARY:

Coming in $1224 per rental, Calgary has only seen one Stanley Cup win. They’ll face off against their rival, Vancouver, in the first round of the playoffs. Canadians will be eagerly watching to see if Canada’s most expensive city will obliterate the oil tycoons.

4. EDMONTON:

Edmonton’s average rental cost is $1141. The city may be a cheaper place to live, but it certainly isn’t a home for hockey champs. Although they’ve won 5 championships, the city has already been ousted from this year’s playoffs.

This metropolitan city peaks at around $1213 per rental. This hockey-loving city has 16 Stanley Cup wins, but nothing since 1967, now coined, “the last good year.” It seems Torontonians will see many more rising rental costs before another cup win.

3. CALGARY:

Coming in $1224 per rental, Calgary has only seen one Stanley Cup win. They’ll face off against their rival, Vancouver, in the first round of the playoffs. Canadians will be eagerly watching to see if Canada’s most expensive city will obliterate the oil tycoons.

4. EDMONTON:

Edmonton’s average rental cost is $1141. The city may be a cheaper place to live, but it certainly isn’t a home for hockey champs. Although they’ve won 5 championships, the city has already been ousted from this year’s playoffs.

Even if your living space is temporary, there are many decorating solutions that you can take with you when you go, and make your place feel like home for the time being.

PAINT. If you really can’t stand the neutral wall colour, try asking your landlord if you can paint, even if it’s only one feature wall (if you promise paint it back when you leave it may help). If they say no, there are still plenty of options when it comes to adding personality into your space.

A VARIETY OF STORES. Mix and match your furniture pieces, don’t purchase everything at once. My general rule of thumb is to shop at a minimum of three different stores when furnishing your home. You don’t have to buy everything at the same time, shop around and turn your place into a story.

ART. If your landlord doesn’t want holes in the walls, you’ve got a few options when it comes to artwork and wall-hung accessories. You can purchase pieces that are free standing, such as my personal favourite, large floor-standing mirrors. Mirrors are a great way to make a room look larger and feel more upscale. Your second option is using stick-on hooks (you can find these at any home improvement store) that are guaranteed not to create surface damage and can hold quite a lot of weight. There is a wide range of sizes and styles available that will suit your undressed-wall’s needs!

VISUAL INTEREST. Create some visual interest in your rental unit by placing a large, floor-to-ceiling, free standing book shelf to cover one of your empty walls and to make use of your vertical space. This can easily be a feature wall, and a great way to show off your belongings. Make sure whatever you place on the shelves are at varying heights. Book shelves aren’t only for books anymore- you can dedicate a shelf for your glassware including vases of different colours and sizes, and you can also purchase baskets to place on a couple shelves that serve as great storage and a great place to hide clutter.

COLOURS, PATTERNS AND TEXTURES. Liven up the space with different colours, patterns and textures. When mixing patterns, make sure the scales differ, for example, match a large-scale floral with a small-scale stripe. You can bring in these elements in varying ways. Throw cushions, area rugs, bedding and upholstery are just a few options. Be creative and let your style shine through.

You may feel frustrated at first when it comes to decorating your rental unit. No paint, no holes and no major changes doesn’t mean no style. Weather you are staying for the short-term or the long run; you can still make your rental an inviting, warm and cozy place to call home.
