Then came the economic change. Creditors stopped throwing credit at every Tom, Dick and Mary regardless of their ability to actually pay back that credit. The government got into the swim creating legislation that said lenders couldn’t just raise a person’ credit limit without telling them – further exposing them to credit risk. And people started losing their jobs.

The abundance of the previous years has turned to forced scarcity. Some people took steps to prepare for the worst and are holding on through the tough times. Others have found their

ONE OF THE REASONS SO MANY PEOPLE ARE UP TO THEIR EYEBALLS IN DEBT IS THAT they’ve had access to gobs of credit. Whether lenders threw a dozen credit cards at us, offered us big, fat lines of credit, or let us buy now and pay later, we’ve been living a life where we could have whatever we want whenever we want.

debt loads too high and are headed to bankruptcy trustees to see what they can off-load. Still others are just drowning with no idea what to do next.

I’m sad for all the people who can’t keep it together – people who are missing their rent or mortgage payments, falling behind on their car payments, pulling their kids out of their sports or other extra-curricular activities. While things were good and they were constantly being offered more and more credit, they never imagined there would ever be an end to their ability to have what they wanted. I’ve worked with more than a few people who are totally astounded at the place they are currently in. How could this happen? Y’all probably know a body or two who are scratching their heads.

I’m hoping the forced scarcity teaches an extremely important lesson about money: there may not be more money, and you better have some set aside just in case. It doesn’t take a world economic crisis to throw a body’s budget into a tailspin if you have no money saved. It only takes a few weeks off work with a sick child, a call to jury duty, or a cut-back in your hours at work to make a house of cards fall down.

I wonder how many people will actually learn the lesson. I wonder how many people will go back to spending every cent they make as soon as the economy gets back on its feet. And I wonder if anyone has figured out that you can create your own sense of scarcity to keep you constantly on your toes when it comes to managing your money.

Abundance has a way of permeating our very being and making us feel invulnerable. But we are all vulnerable, whether we want to accept that fact or not. And creating the illusion of scarcity may be what it takes to stay true to a sound financial plan.

I’m not talking about creating such a sense of scarcity that you’re always whining about what you can’t do or

can’t have. And I’m not suggesting you use the illusion of scarcity to cheap out on life. But if you’re the kind of creature who routinely spends every penny she makes, maybe you need to implement the illusion of scarcity to keep yourself in check. And maybe if you move your money where you can’t touch it, leaving yourself with less to “blow” on stuff, you’ll actually end up achieving some of those goals that have always been so elusive.

How do you create the illusion of scarcity. Well…First, you make a budget that balances. You transfer all the money that must be used to pay your fixed and variable expenses to a “house” account, so you know those bills are covered and you can’t spend that money on stuff.

Second, you set some goals you want to achieve. It may be paying down your mortgage annually, taking a fabulous family vacation, or going back to school.

Third, you set up savings accounts for each of the goals you want to achieve, and have the money you want to saved moved automatically to those accounts so that money is out of sight.

Now you only have money left in your first account that you can actually

spend on all that crap you so love to buy: coffee, lunches out, another tool, magazines, DVDs, more clothes… name your weakness here. For me it’s houseplants and books. When I look at the money in my account, because I’ve made most of it disappear to places I don’t look regularly, I’m more cautious about just how I blow what’s left. I prioritize. I consciously decide to spend (or not to spend) the money. I don’t feel like I have so much money I’ll never run out so I can just have this one little thing.

And that’s the point of creating the illusion of scarcity: to recognize that money is an exhaustible resource so you better be sure your spending isn’t just a knee-jerk reaction to your sense of abundance.

Then came the economic change. Creditors stopped throwing credit at every Tom, Dick and Mary regardless of their ability to actually pay back that credit. The government got into the swim creating legislation that said lenders couldn’t just raise a person’ credit limit without telling them – further exposing them to credit risk. And people started losing their jobs.

The abundance of the previous years has turned to forced scarcity. Some people took steps to prepare for the worst and are holding on through the tough times. Others have found their

ONE OF THE REASONS SO MANY PEOPLE ARE UP TO THEIR EYEBALLS IN DEBT IS THAT they’ve had access to gobs of credit. Whether lenders threw a dozen credit cards at us, offered us big, fat lines of credit, or let us buy now and pay later, we’ve been living a life where we could have whatever we want whenever we want.

debt loads too high and are headed to bankruptcy trustees to see what they can off-load. Still others are just drowning with no idea what to do next.

I’m sad for all the people who can’t keep it together – people who are missing their rent or mortgage payments, falling behind on their car payments, pulling their kids out of their sports or other extra-curricular activities. While things were good and they were constantly being offered more and more credit, they never imagined there would ever be an end to their ability to have what they wanted. I’ve worked with more than a few people who are totally astounded at the place they are currently in. How could this happen? Y’all probably know a body or two who are scratching their heads.

I’m hoping the forced scarcity teaches an extremely important lesson about money: there may not be more money, and you better have some set aside just in case. It doesn’t take a world economic crisis to throw a body’s budget into a tailspin if you have no money saved. It only takes a few weeks off work with a sick child, a call to jury duty, or a cut-back in your hours at work to make a house of cards fall down.

I wonder how many people will actually learn the lesson. I wonder how many people will go back to spending every cent they make as soon as the economy gets back on its feet. And I wonder if anyone has figured out that you can create your own sense of scarcity to keep you constantly on your toes when it comes to managing your money.

Abundance has a way of permeating our very being and making us feel invulnerable. But we are all vulnerable, whether we want to accept that fact or not. And creating the illusion of scarcity may be what it takes to stay true to a sound financial plan.

I’m not talking about creating such a sense of scarcity that you’re always whining about what you can’t do or

can’t have. And I’m not suggesting you use the illusion of scarcity to cheap out on life. But if you’re the kind of creature who routinely spends every penny she makes, maybe you need to implement the illusion of scarcity to keep yourself in check. And maybe if you move your money where you can’t touch it, leaving yourself with less to “blow” on stuff, you’ll actually end up achieving some of those goals that have always been so elusive.

How do you create the illusion of scarcity. Well…First, you make a budget that balances. You transfer all the money that must be used to pay your fixed and variable expenses to a “house” account, so you know those bills are covered and you can’t spend that money on stuff.

Second, you set some goals you want to achieve. It may be paying down your mortgage annually, taking a fabulous family vacation, or going back to school.

Third, you set up savings accounts for each of the goals you want to achieve, and have the money you want to saved moved automatically to those accounts so that money is out of sight.

Now you only have money left in your first account that you can actually

spend on all that crap you so love to buy: coffee, lunches out, another tool, magazines, DVDs, more clothes… name your weakness here. For me it’s houseplants and books. When I look at the money in my account, because I’ve made most of it disappear to places I don’t look regularly, I’m more cautious about just how I blow what’s left. I prioritize. I consciously decide to spend (or not to spend) the money. I don’t feel like I have so much money I’ll never run out so I can just have this one little thing.

And that’s the point of creating the illusion of scarcity: to recognize that money is an exhaustible resource so you better be sure your spending isn’t just a knee-jerk reaction to your sense of abundance.

many advantages.

Moving last minute? No problem, if it’s during the cold months. Choosing to move in the “off season” – sometime between November and March – can save you time and money.

Summer is the busiest season for moving companies. This means you must be well prepared, booking six to eight weeks in advance to ensure your preferred moving company is available. Not only are they higher in demand but generally their rates are also more expensive.

Some companies may be more willing to negotiate their rates during the winter months as they’re competing for business during the slow season. Likewise, less rush and stress for companies in the winter means you get their best employees resulting in a higher quality of service.

With everything booked, now comes the packing. Follow these tips for a relaxed and toasty move – no matter what’s going on outside those frosted windows.

• Have a contingency plan. Keep up to date with local weather forecasts and change your plans accordingly. If a big snowfall or freezing rain is expected the morning of your move day, don’t risk it.

• Keep cozy. Carry extra warm clothes for you and your family – including hats, gloves and snow pants. Pack these ahead of time and clearly label them so you can locate them immediately.

• Remember your items will be in a non-heated environment for a while. Ensure your plants, electronics and liquids are properly packed and protected from the cold.

• Allow extra time on the move day – cold weather slows things down. Additionally, rushing in the winter can lead to accidents and injuries.

• Have driveways and sidewalks cleared of snow before the movers arrive. Your driveway needs to be ploughed wider than usual – enough to allow the moving truck’s loading ramp to be positioned as close to your front door as possible. Lay plywood down on muddy or slushy areas. Slipping can not only lead to dropped boxes and broken possessions but also personal injury.

• Quality movers will use floor runners to protect your floors in high traffic area but for extra protection inside, cover your floors to protect them from tracked-in snow, mud, and salt.

• Drive safe. Make sure maintenance and service on your vehicles is current. Check the air pressure on your tires and ensure the trunk is equipped with emergency kits (matches, flashlight, food), blankets, and shovels. Drive slowly with extra caution.

• Be certain that your heating company for your new home is aware of your move in day.

Wintertime moving doesn’t have to be wet and miserable. With these reminders, you’ll be packed up, moved and basking in the warmth of your new home before you know it.

At this stage of your life, you may be finishing up your education, paying off student loans, or just beginning your first job(s). It’s not likely that you will have even accumulated enough cash to use as a down payment. One of the many advantages renting has over home ownership, is that there is no large down payment to be paid up front. You only have to come up with your first and last month’s rent.

And despite the message of real estate marketers who try to convince you that you can own a condominium or home for the same price as renting, here’s the truth: renting is always substantially less than owning. While it is possible that monthly mortgage payments might be comparable to what you’d pay to rent, as an owner you will also have to pay property taxes, all maintenance expenses (either monthly maintenance payments in a condo, or all costs of repairs and maintenance from appliance repairs, to landscaping, snow shoveling, etc. in a house). Many apartments include utilities or hydro in the rent, and when owning you would also have to pay an additional amount for these services. What about insurance? Tenants’ insurance is always less expensive than the cost of insuring your own home.

At this stage of your life, flexibility is most important because you are very likely to move again within the next three to five years, either to take another job, go back to school, or because your family is growing and your needs are changing. It’s much easier to make a move when your only obligation is a one-year lease. The hassle and expense of having to sell your home would unnecessarily complicate any career move.

Some bankers and real estate professionals will try to convince you that with renting you’re not building

equity. But when you factor in all the hidden costs of buying and selling real estate, from commissions, to legal fees to land transfer taxes, etc. , the reality is that no condo or house is going to appreciate that much in the short term to offset those hidden costs. If you are lucky enough to actually have enough cash accumulated to use as a down payment on a house, keep it in a secure two or three year term investment with a good return. When you run the numbers you will be much further ahead three years down the road than if you had invested it in a condo.

The other good reason for renting at this stage of your life is that renting can offer all of the benefits of living in a prime neighbourhood – one that you likely couldn’t afford to buy in – such as convenience to transportation, shopping, recreation facilities, etc., along with condo-quality amenities such as fitness facilities, concierge, indoor/outdoor pools, etc. decorating upgrades, spectacular kitchens and bathrooms, etc. at a price that won’t leave you cash-strapped. With renting, you’ll be able to save a little every month, for emergencies, travel, retirement, or have a little more disposable income for furniture, a car, clothing, and entertainment, which is also important to you.

When you consider all the advantages that renting affords, you’ll see that your dream home is really an apartment!

ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGERS RENTERS CAN FACE IS PERSONALIZING A SPACE. From landlord restrictions to budgetary constraints, there are a multitude of reasons why many renters are unable to make desired changes to their homes. While the basic setting is often nice, renters are limited to painting, rugs and furnishings to infuse their taste and lifestyle into an apartment. Time after time, renters put off their dream storage unit or design feature knowing that they will someday move, and potentially lose their investment.Wine cellars are generally one of those dreams to disappear, as many assume they are the sole domain of mansion-dwellers. age too quickly and therefore deteriorate. Plus, away from the light, the labels won’t fade. It’s always good to know what that special bottle is.
