Theational program is designed to helpeep citizens active and involved inheir communities.he local RSVP services Mecosta, sceola and Lake Counties and worksith 132 nonprofit organizations, aid director Sandra Dalrymple. Onhursday, RSVP saluted some of theirutstanding volunteers.ive volunteers reached 1,000 hoursf service this year and were surprisedith a certificate honoring theirccomplishment during the ceremony.arlene Burgess from Mecosta Countynd Susan Foster, Lois Ingraham, adine Nash and Ann Walters fromake County all reached the 1,000our marker. Although none of them

knew they were receiving the honoruntil their names were announced.I didnt know I had 1,000 hours,Burgess said. I dont keep track ofthat. The 73-year-old resident of MerrillLake has been volunteering withRSVP for 15 years. She got involvedafter a friend suggested she needed

something to do after her retirement.Volunteer Coordinator Linda Newtonlogs the volunteers hours on acomputer and keeps a running tally.

s the volunteers reach milestones,SVP recognizes them, oftenurprising the volunteers.till surprised by the award, Burgessaid she is excited to help. Its wonderful. Im glad Im able to stillo this, I enjoy doing it, Burgess said.he group then moved to anotherurprise, presenting a volunteer of theear from each county. This year secipients were Ruth Miessen from

ecosta County, Milton Wehmeierrom Lake County and Illene Gaffneyrom Osceola County.I couldnt figure out why (RSVP)anted to make sure I was comingere today, Miessen said.

She said several members of theprogram asked her multiple times ifshe would be at the ceremony. Sherealized why, though, after she heardher name announced. That is a great honor, it really is,Miessen said. I (volunteer) because Ilove it.Miessen has worked with the American

go by what their activity is, how oftenthey turn their hours in and the hoursthat they turn in, Dalrymple said.A volunteer of the year recipient is onlyeligible for the award once.Listening to acoustic and stealguitar music provided by PlayingAround, Burgess sums up howshe has managed to reach 1,000hours of volunteer service with oneorganization. Its a wonderful organization, they doa lot of good, she said.

    Understanding Your Pets

Immune System(NewsUSA) - In my practice, Ivealways used probiotics in general -;as animals need probiotics just likehumans. Adding beneficial bacteriato a pets diet helps the digestivesystem combat intestinal parasites andimproves digestive function.

The gastrointestinal tract is such animportant foundation to pets immunesystems because the gut is an entrypoint for pathogens. If youre usingprobiotics, the immune system issupported and strengthened to fight

infection quickly and aggressively.Probiotics also help stop the immunesystem from over-reacting andcreating inflammation.

One common issue for pets is earinfection. Ive observed that whetherwe used conventional or alternativetreatments, adding a probiotic productfor immune system support shortensthe length and reduces the severityof the infection. I usually see a betteroutcome by adding Del-Immune V(www.delimmune.com) to treatment, and generally dont need to do

additional treatments, as is commonwith ear infections.

Another common issue with pets isskin problems, including mange. Ihave found that skin problems improvequickly with a probiotic product, likeDel-Immune V. I use it for immunesystem support with all types ofmange, including the problematicdemodectic mange. Some animalshave genetically inherited immuneweaknesses that allow mange-inducing mites to overgrow. Dogs caninherit the mites from their parents.

You will know the mites are out ofcontrol if mange becomes a problem.

Probiotics help immensely bysupporting the immune system inmounting an appropriate responseto the mange mites. Traditionaltreatments for mange can includestrong antibiotics and dips in toxicmedicines. But many dogs, if provideda good diet and Del-Immune V, canget over it on their own -- unless theinfection is too severe. Most dogssurvive with veterinary intervention, butif severe enough, mange can be fatal.

See your local veterinarian if your petbegins to display any symptoms.

Balancing Act: Tips forAdult Learners Juggling theResponsibilities of Work and

    School

(NewsUSA) - Balancing work and thecommitment of earning an advanceddegree can be daunting. But it is areality many adult learners face asthey continue their education whilejuggling personal, family and financialresponsibilities.

The good news is that there are manytips and resources available to helpease stress and make balancing workand school manageable.

    1. Capitalize on flexible class

scheduling. An increasing number ofcolleges and universities are tailoringeducation to suit working studentsschedules. DeVry University, forexample, offers flexible scheduling ina mix and match format that allowsstudents to enroll in a combination ofonsite or online courses during the dayor evening, based on convenience.

    2. Make a schedule and stayorganized. A calendar that outlinesupcoming work and school projects, meetings and deadlines takes littletime to create and can make a busyschedule feel under control.

Time management is an essentialquality and core competency for mostprofessionals, and this will be a goodtest of ones mettle, explained JeffreyGreenberg, director of career servicesfor DeVry University. This skill getseasier over time and will ensure thatyour work does not pile up, preventingyou from meeting deadlines.

    3. Address your stress. The weightof multiple obligations can beoverwhelming. Its important to takebreaks to obtain a fresh perspective.

Exercise and social interaction providethe perfect opportunity to relieve stressand refocus your thoughts, allowingyou to return to coursework with aclear mind and renewed sense ofenergy.

    4. Take advantage of your schoolsresources. The network of classmatesand professors your school offerscan provide support and advice forbalancing work and school. Theeconomic recession has led manyschools to launch career servicesdepartments or strengthen existing

    ones.

    5. Create a support network. Harnessthe support of friends and family, andsee if they can help you accomplishyour goals. This support could besomething as simple as meeting with aroommate to plan household chores ormeals for the month.

It is important to remember that thehard work and sacrifice required tobalance work and school often lead tocareer success.

A Mothers Gift of Hope to HerDiabetic Son

    (NewsUSA) - When Brenda

Novaks 5-year-old son, Thad, wasdiagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Iwas heartbroken, she says. Wevebecome numb to diabetes, but whenit happens to someone you love yourealize how dangerous it truly is.

In the last decade, the cases of peopleliving with diabetes jumped morethan 40 percent -- almost 26 millionAmericans. Today, diabetes takesmore lives than AIDS and breastcancer combined -- claiming the life ofone American every three minutes.

Determined to take a stand againstthe devastating disease, Novak,a bestselling romantic suspensenovelist, founded an annual OnlineAuction for Diabetes Research toraise money for a cure. In honor of amothers enduring

love for her son, the month-longauction is held each May at www.BrendaNovak.com to coincide withMothers Day. Last year, the auctionbrought in $303,000 toward diabetesresearch, bringing their six-year total tover $1 million.

The event -- going on its 7th year-- benefits the Diabetes ResearchInstitute (DRI), the leading center thatshares Novaks commitment to findinga cure for diabetes. The DRI has madesignificant progress toward a cure forall children and adults, pioneering cell-based therapies and other emergingtechnologies to restore insulinproduction for patients with diabetes.

We need to dedicate time andattention to this problem on a massivescale, says Novak. After touring theDRI, shes steadfast in her belief that

the Institute is the best place for theproceeds. Going to the DRI enabledme to assure my son that we willsee a cure some day -- and mademe confident that it will be some daysoon.

Auction participants can show theirsupport for a diabetes cure and scorea perfect Mothers Day gift. Amongthe most popular items in this yearsauction: jewelry, eReaders, iPads, autographed novels and Coachpurses and wallets. If youre lookingto splurge, higher-end items run the

gamut from an African safari and othertrips and hotel stays to an $8,500 ringsimilar to the one Prince William gaveKate Middleton.

Literary buffs will enjoy bidding onlunches with famous authors DianaGabaldon and Steve Berry, or a stay atNora Roberts romantic inn.

I always hoped wed be able to besuccessful, but never in my wildestdreams would I have anticipated thesteady outpouring of support wevereceived each year, says Novak. Its

given me great hope in humanity.

Daily Supplement Proven toHelp With Osteoarthritis

NewsUSA) - New research usingutting-edge Magnetic Resonance

Imaging (MRI) for the first timeonfirms that pharmaceutical gradehondroitin sulphate (CSbBIO-CTIVE) significantly helps reduce theffects of osteoarthritis in the knee.

steoarthritis is the most commonorm of arthritis, affecting 27 millioneople in the U.S. alone. Over time, his condition leads to breakdown ofhe cartilage and other parts of theoint, causing stiffness, pain and lossf movement. Cartilage is a firm, ubbery covering on the ends of jointones that reduces friction and acts asshock absorber. With osteoarthritis,

he cartilage loses elasticity and wearsway; without the cushioning cartilagerovides, the bones can rub againstach other. Cartilage deterioration can

affect the shape and makeup of theoint so it no longer functions smoothly.lso, bruises called bone marrow

esions can develop inside the bonend may cause knee pain.

rial results recently published inleading arthritis journal showed

hat chondroitin sulphate treatmentignificantly reduced cartilage lossnd bone marrow lesions fromsteoarthritis of the knee.

    hondroitin is a natural substance

in the body that helps keep cartilagehealthy by absorbing fluid andproviding building blocks to producenew cartilage. Chondroitin may alsoblock enzymes that break down

    cartilage.

Recent advances in MRI made itpossible for Dr. Jean-Pierre Pelletierand his team at University of MontrealHospital Research Centre in Canadato measure for the first time the impactof chondroitin sulfate on cartilageloss and other changes to the joint, including bone marrow lesions. Thelatest technology enabled researchersto measure and demonstratesignificant improvements aftertreatment with chondroitin sulphate.

    By six months, patients showed

significantly less cartilage losscompared with those receivingplacebo. By 12 months, treatmentsignificantly decreased bone marrowlesion size.

Reducing bone marrow lesionsmay help lessen some of the painassociated with osteoarthritis, saidDr. Pelletier. From these results, wecan conclude that chondroitin sulfateis a safe drug that significantly reducesthe volume of cartilage loss and slowsdown the progression of osteoarthritisin the knee. He notes, Patientsmust be provided highly purified

pharmaceutical-grade chondroitinsulphate, the one used in this study, asthis is the onl one that can uarantee

    such efficacy and specifically, safetyresults.

Health Care Quality: Why ItsImproving, How to Get It

(NewsUSA) - The ongoing debateabout health care reform obscures animportant fact: Americans get bettercare today than they did 20 years ago.

A key reason is the NationalCommittee for Quality Assurance(NCQA). The nonprofit organizationwas founded in 1990 to measurequality and make health care moretransparent and accountable. Dr. ElliottFisher, Director of Population Healthand Policy at the Dartmouth Institute, credits NCQA for reporting qualitythe same way across the country so

people can make apples-to-applescomparison when choosing healthplans.

By making care more transparentand accountable, NCQA has savedthousands of lives and millions ofdollars. It does this by helping peopleget care they need and preventingwaste. Children today are nearlythree times more likely to get theirrecommended immunizations thanthey were in 1997, thanks in large partto NCQA.

    The Healthcare Effectiveness Data

and Information Set (HEDIS) isNCQAs main tool for improving health

care. HEDIS shows how often insurersprovide scientifically recommendedtests and treatments to support morethan 70 aspects of health. One-hundred twenty million Americans
