rst Out of the Darkness SuicidePrevention Walk, which will takelace at 9 a.m. on Saturday inorthend Riverside Park. Having

aised $1,700 so far for the event,ewis said she hopes to reach5,000 total to benefit the American

Foundation for Suicide Prevention.cross the country, more than 200

communities host their own Out ofthe Darkness walks every year.The walk is to raise awareness andmoney for educational materials inschools and research, Lewis said.More than 100 people are expectedto join the walk, which will follow aone-and-a-half mile route along theRiverwalk. Those who donate at

least $150 will receive a free T-shirtfrom the American Foundation forSuicide Prevention.Bernies Place will provide a freebreakfast for participants before thewalk, and lunch will be served afteras well. Participants also can entera raffle to win prizes.The death of Lewis son, GordonDolley, is a big motivator behind theevent. Dolley was 15 and a freshmanat Morley Stanwood High Schoolwhere he was bullied by studentsbefore his death. Since Dolleyssuicide, the school formed an Anti-Bullying Committee to help addressthe issue of bully prevention.

Fuel-Up: If you pack a small coolerwith water bottles and healthysnacks like fruits and veggies, this

can deter the temptation to reachfor non-healthy items on the road.

Stability: Stability should be yournumber-one concern when takinga long road trip. Many peoplestick pillows behind their backs forlumbar support, but the main goal is

to always have your spine straight.Sit with the seat fully contactingyour back; allow the structure of theseat to do its job in supporting yourspine.

Body Positioning: Maintain properposture by not leaning one way orthe other in the seat. According tothe National Highway and TrafficSafety Authority, a drivers handsshould both be placed on the outsideof the steering wheel on oppositesides. Long recommends the 9and 3 hand position. Having properposition in the car is also relativeto the pedals -- if youre too close

youre cramped. If youre too faraway, youll end up slouching downto reach them. Sit close enough tothe wheel so theres a slight bendat your elbows and keep your armsrelaxed.

Take Frequent Pit Stops: Forlonger-distance road adventures,take frequent pit stops in order tostretch your legs and improve theblood flow in your body. To preventa sore lower back experienced afterdriving, focus on core stability andstrength exercises. Long suggestsplanks, leg lifts and crunches onan exercise ball to strengthen yourcore.

In May 2011, a 20-year-old videogamer from England died whena blood clot formed in his leg andmoved to his lungs. The man oftenremained in the same positionplaying video games for 12 hourstraight.

Movement is essential for propeblood flow, said Anil Hingorani,MD, a member of the Society foVascular Surgery. Sitting in thesame position for long periodof time -- whether playing videogames or cramped in a car or on anairplane -- can result in pooling othe blood in the veins. Blood clotknown as deep vein thrombose(DVT) can form.

The 2011 Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention statisticreveal that 300,000 to 600,000 Americans die each year from

blood clots in the lungs. In 2003,39-year-old NBC News reporteDavid Bloom died when a blood cloin his leg traveled to his lungs. Theclot formed after weeks of drivingaround Baghdad in a crampedmilitary tank.

Stand up and stretch, advises Dr.Hingorani. Walk around. Raise andlower your heels and toes. Tightenand release your leg muscles. Thiwill help promote blood flow.

DVTs usually occur in persons whoare sick and have had long hospitalstays. The risk factors for DVT

include the following:* obesity

* a history of heart attacks

* strokes

* congestive heart failure

* inflammatory bowel disease

Women who are pregnant, nursingor taking birth control pills are alsoat increased risk for DVTs.
