    PLANNING FOR COMFORT

    DURING LONG ROAD TRIPS

    (NewsUSA) - Road trips canprovide a great source of tunes,good conversation and relaxationthroughout any travel season.However, long hours on the roadcan often result in body aches, poornutrition and other challenges fordrivers stuck behind the wheel.

    To avoid such pitfalls and make theexperience a bit less taxing on thebody, champion Porsche race cardriver Patrick Long has developeda set of guidelines for driverseverywhere. Long, an American LeMans Series race car driver whocan be in his car for up to 12 hoursat a time, recommends these tipsfor any kind of distance driving:

    Fuel-Up: If you pack a small coolerwith water bottles and healthysnacks like fruits and veggies, this

    can deter the temptation to reachfor non-healthy items on the road.

    Stability: Stability should be yournumber-one concern when takinga long road trip. Many peoplestick pillows behind their backs forlumbar support, but the main goal is

    to always have your spine straight.Sit with the seat fully contactingyour back; allow the structure of theseat to do its job in supporting yourspine.

    Body Positioning: Maintain properposture by not leaning one way orthe other in the seat. According tothe National Highway and TrafficSafety Authority, a drivers handsshould both be placed on the outsideof the steering wheel on oppositesides. Long recommends the 9and 3 hand position. Having properposition in the car is also relativeto the pedals -- if youre too close

    youre cramped. If youre too faraway, youll end up slouching downto reach them. Sit close enough tothe wheel so theres a slight bendat your elbows and keep your armsrelaxed.

    Take Frequent Pit Stops: Forlonger-distance road adventures,take frequent pit stops in order tostretch your legs and improve theblood flow in your body. To preventa sore lower back experienced afterdriving, focus on core stability andstrength exercises. Long suggestsplanks, leg lifts and crunches onan exercise ball to strengthen yourcore.

    PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE

    FOR FALL

    (NewsUSA) - In many parts of thecountry, the leaves have startedto fall, and parents have sent theirchildren back to school. Before theweather takes a turn, FirestoneComplete Auto Care would like tooffer the following car maintenancetips to get vehicles ready for the

    damp, cold road ahead.

    Take your vehicle for a full checkup. As the fall weather rolls in, itsimportant to have the following itemschecked by a professional: batterycables and terminals, belts andhoses, air filters, windshield wipersand all fluids, including anti-freeze,oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid,automatic transmission fluid andwindshield washer fluid.

    Take a good look at your tires. Arethere signs of uneven tread wear?That could indicate under-inflation,unbalanced tires or misaligned

    wheels. Remember to check yourtire pressure with a gauge at leastonce a month and regularly inspectthe tread depth. Your tread will beeven more important during theautumn months when wet, deadleaves cover the roadways.

    Take care of your lights and turnsignals. Fall, along with lessfavorable weather, also meansits time to turn the clocks back fordaylight savings. With a shorterday comes a longer night, so besure your headlights, taillights andturn signals are in proper workingorder and shining at the appropriatelevels.

    Talk to your teenager. Have ateenager in the house? Worried

    about all the driving they will bedoing during the fall? You canteen-proof your neighborhood, buyou can talk to your teen about safedriving before they head to school.

    Teens Drive Smart, a teen drivesafety initiative from Bridgestone Americas, the parent company toBridgestone Retail Operations, LLC,which owns and operates FirestoneComplete Auto Care, has tips andresources for parents to help stara conversation with their teenabout smart driving. Visit www.TeensDriveSmart.com for moreinformation.

    Remember, not only can takingthese small steps keep your vehiclerunning newer, longer, but they canalso help keep you and your familsafe on the road.

    A MEDICAL WARNING FOR

    VIDEO GAMERS

    (NewsUSA) - Video gamers whoparticipate in marathon sessionmay be putting their health at risk.

    In May 2011, a 20-year-old videogamer from England died whena blood clot formed in his leg andmoved to his lungs. The man oftenremained in the same positionplaying video games for 12 hourstraight.

    Movement is essential for propeblood flow, said Anil Hingorani,MD, a member of the Society foVascular Surgery. Sitting in thesame position for long periodof time -- whether playing videogames or cramped in a car or on anairplane -- can result in pooling othe blood in the veins. Blood clotknown as deep vein thrombose(DVT) can form.

    The 2011 Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention statisticreveal that 300,000 to 600,000 Americans die each year from

    blood clots in the lungs. In 2003,39-year-old NBC News reporteDavid Bloom died when a blood cloin his leg traveled to his lungs. Theclot formed after weeks of drivingaround Baghdad in a crampedmilitary tank.

    Stand up and stretch, advises Dr.Hingorani. Walk around. Raise andlower your heels and toes. Tightenand release your leg muscles. Thiwill help promote blood flow.

    DVTs usually occur in persons whoare sick and have had long hospitalstays. The risk factors for DVT

    include the following:* obesity

    * a history of heart attacks

    * strokes

    * congestive heart failure

    * inflammatory bowel disease

    Women who are pregnant, nursingor taking birth control pills are alsoat increased risk for DVTs.

    Half of DVT patients do noexperience the warning signs, which

    include:

    * swelling

    OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA

    WILL RUIN YOUR NIGHT

    NewsUSA) - Do you have troubleleeping through the night? Doou wake up feeling unrested andonsistently drowsy?

    onstant daytime drowsiness isne of the leading symptoms ofbstructive sleep apnea (OSA),

    he most common type of sleeppnea according to the Americanleep Apnea Association. Sleeppnea is a condition occurringhen a persons breathing pausesr decreases during the nightue to blocked airways. Extremenoring and sudden gasps arether common symptoms.

    lthough sleep apnea isntparticularly devastating ordangerous, it has adverse effectson ones life and responsibilities.Someone suffering from OSA

    will often feel impatient, irritable,

    forgetful and listless. If untreated,the condition leads to hard-to-treatheadaches, severe depressionand poor performance at work orschool.

    The long-term consequences

    of untreated sleep apnea aresignificant as well. The sleepingcondition may cause or worsenheart disease, heart arrhythmias,heart failure, high blood pressureand strokes.

    Furthermore, research shows aconnection between shift workand sleep apnea. Shift work isthe opposite of a nine-to-fiveschedule, often consisting oflate-night or early-morning hours.Since shift work interrupts analready-damaged sleep cycle, itonly compounds existing apneaside effects.

    The number of apneic episodes

    per night can increase significantly,and sleep-deprivation symptomswill only worsen.

    Its estimated that up to one-thirdof shift workers experience sideeffects severe enough to diagnosethem with shift work disorder. Dueto their interrupted sleep schedule,shift work disorder causes sufferersto struggle to stay awake, and tofall asleep.

    Imbalanced biological clocksprevent workers from fallingasleep when they actually havetime, and they also disruptdigestive systems. These addedcomplications make shift work and

    sleep apnea the Molotov cocktailof sleep deprivation.

    For more information on obstructivesleep apnea or shift work disorder,visit www.sleepapnea.org.

    ADULT STEM CELL RESEARCH

    IS GROWING POSSIBILITIES

    (NewsUSA) - Through researchlabs and clinical trials acrossthe country, adult stem cells areemerging to offer a variety ofmedical solutions. While someapplaud the shift away fromembryonic stem cells, othersare still uncertain about the realapplicability of adult stem cellresearch.

    Despite the array of misconceptionsand caution surroundingregenerative medicine as awhole, shocking and promising

    discoveries are being made aboutcell therapies. One such discoveryis the ability to extract adult stemcells from body fat, cryogenicallypreserve them in a stem cell bankto capture your current cell age anduse them for personal treatmentlater in life.

    This technology, offered exclusivelyby American CryoStem, wasdeveloped in response to theincreasing applications of adultstem cells globally.

    The Wake Forest Institute ofRegenerative Medicine is growingentire organs in petri dishes usinga patients own stem cells. Wake

    Forest doctor Anthon Atala has

    engineered ears, fingers and evenpulsing, functional blood vessels.

    Another technique that we use isto grow patients cells and placthem on 3D biodegradable moldsto create entire complex organs.

    After eight weeks of incubationand growth, the new organ can btransplanted, explains Atala.

    In Colorado, a leading spinsurgeon successfully performeda lumbar disc procedure usingadult stem cells to reverse thdisc degeneration and regrowdisc cartilage. The preclinical trialoffers an alternative to artificialdisc replacement and spinalfusion surgeries for sufferers odebilitating back pain.

    Researchers are also exploringadult stem cell treatments timprove cardiac function afterheart attack. A hospital in Wales

    cured blindness from varyinglevels of cornea damage; doctorsin Europe saved a mans life bygrowing him a new windpipe;doctors in Cincinnati replacedchilds missing cheekbones -- allusing personal adult stem cells.
