    FERRIS HIRES ANNESE TO LEAD

    FOOTBALL PROGRAM

    By Martin Slagter

    Pioneer Sports Editor

BIG RAPIDS Thing have been pretty hectic for the

    nnese family recently.

Tony Annese, who took the job as head football coach

t Ferris State on Thursday, said the past few weeks have

een such a blur, its been difficult to remember what timef year it is.

Im trying to figure out when Christmas is, he joked

uring his press conference on Thursday.

Annese is confident that he and his family will return toome state of normalcy, though, in the coming days before

he begins his job with the Bulldogs.

You get overwhelmed with how much you have to do,

he said. Its an exciting time. The next couple of days I can

ust enjoy with my family and Christmas and then get towork on Dec. 26.

Annese, 50, and his family have lived in the West

Michigan area for the past 14 years, making coaching stops

along the way in Jenison, Muskegon and Grand Rapids.

With so much change, it will take a while before hecollects his bearings in Big Rapids.

I just moved to Grand Rapids in August, so its going to

be a process to (move to Big Rapids), he said. Ultimately

    wed like to be here.

Annese and his wife, Christine, have four children,Steven, Nick, Allie and Anthony.

There have been times when moving around has been

difficult for the family, but their love for football has been a

driving force in keeping the family happy.

Were supportive of whatever Tony wants to do, shesaid. From the time the kids were tiny, football has been a

part of our family. Thats what we do.

Christine Annese said the couples children make up an

interesting dynamic. Allie plans to join her father at FerrisState when she starts college, while Steven and Nick attend

Ferris States most heated rival, Grand Valley State.

The kids still want their dad to win against the Lakers,

    Christine noted.

My older two boys go to Grand Valley, she said. Theyold Tony that if youre going to come to Ferris, youd better

beat Grand Valley. Thats what theyre going to be talking

to all of their friends about.

The decision to take the position at Ferris State wascollaborative one, Tony Annese said. If his family had

eservations about making the trek to Big Rapids, it wouldave weighed in his decision.

Ultimately it was a collaborative decision, he said. If

I sensed a bit of concern, it wouldnt have made me soetermined to take the position. I think it was unanimous.

heyre all really excited about me taking this position.

As for how long the family plans to be in Big Rapids,

Christine Annese said she would be happy with her

husband coaching the Bulldogs for the long haul.He can stay here for a while, she said. That would be

reat. The older kids are all in college. Allie is planning to

come to Ferris. We get entrenched in whatever community

    hes coaching in.

    MAXIMIZE PROFITS FROM YOUR RENTAL

    PROPERTY

(NewsUSA) - Managing a rental property can be an

excellent source of income in todays economy.

A third of the nations households rent their residences,

according to the 2010 U.S. Census Report, and that

number rises as high as two-thirds in large metropolitan

areas, such as New York and Los Angeles.

Given the steady demand for rental housing, its no

wonder that individuals are investing in real estate, but

there are several things property managers should know if

they hope to make a profit.

First, it is important that landlords screen all potential

tenants to ensure they have reliable income and will pay

bills on time. Once you have secured tenants, keeping

them happy, while still running a successful business, isyour primary goal. Maintaining a clear, written record of any

exchanges you have with tenants will make it easy to track

    any problems.

Its also essential that all properties satisfy basic living

conditions, such as adequate weatherproofing, and thatthey adhere to state regulations for safe electrical wiring

and ventilation. Landlords are required to arrange for

necessary repairs. Its good to develop relationships withlocal contractors, so tenants remain satisfied, and the

    property stays in top shape.

Property management is expensive, even with the

supplemental income that rent provides, and many propertymanagers lose a substantial amount of money each year

by not taking advantages of available tax deductions.

Insurance costs, repairs and independent contractor wages

are all fully deductible but often go overlooked. A detailedrecord-keeping system is the best way for landlords to

track their income and expenses, but many simply do not

    have the time.

One way to address this issue is to hire a bookkeepingfirm to take over bookkeeping duties. On Call Accountants

(www.oncallaccountants.com) is one such company that

specializes in outsourced accounting, financial reporting

and consulting for small and mid-sized businesses.

By handing this job over to the professionals, propertymanagers can maximize profits with minimal headaches.

For more information about On Call Accountants, visit

    www.oncallaccountants.com.

    IMAGE IS EVERYTHING

(NewsUSA) - Today people are bombarded with more

information than they can process. Simultaneously, websites, blogs and social media have the public trained

to consume information in bullet points, sound bytes and

tweets containing 140 characters or less.

No matter how you are trying to get your message across,

whether through social media, a website or blog, an ad or

even a presentation, the best way to pique someones

interest is through compelling imagery. Photos must be

engaging enough to get someone to focus on what youvegot to say.

When choosing an image, it pays to be selective. Great

images have the power to inform, inspire, confuse, shock,

delight, empower, enrage and enlighten. Start by thinking

    about things like:

    * Whom you want to reach?

    * What message you want to communicate?

    * What sort of tone you want to set?

    * What kind of reaction you want?

While the image should relate to the overall topic, it

doesnt have to do so literally. This gives you the artistic

freedom to have fun with your image search. It also will

help you remain open to inspiration as you search.

As to effective image searches, sifting through millionsof images on the Internet via a simple search engine query

is highly ineffective. The chances of finding something the

right size, shape, resolution and quality are low. Copyrightand privacy issues also arise -- particularly if the photos will

    be used commercially.

Fortunately, there are places to get inexpensive imagerythat can be legitimately used for a whole host of purposes.

Stock pictures can be purchased from places like www.

photos.com for as little as a dollar or two.

For blog posts, budget-sensitive projects and nonprofits,Photos.com offers easy searching from numerous

categories in several subject areas. You can buy a single

image, packs of images at various resolution sizes or evenannual subscriptions.

For images to be used for an extended time, as in a

website, or a marketing brochure, more highly art-directed

imagery can be found at www.iStockphoto.com. Both sites

have powerful search engines that make short work o

    finding the perfect image.

    WHO IS TEACHING OUR TEACHERS?

(NewsUSA) - When schools are challenged withinsufficient funds, outdated infrastructure and a wide gap

in achievement levels between low-income and high-

income families, the weight of responsibility falls heavily on

educators. But who is educating our teachers?

Most professionals receive ongoing training to keep

their skills and knowledge fresh and applicable in a rapidly

    changing world. Continued professional developmen

is even more important for teachers -- the men and

women preparing todays students for college, career, and citizenship, explains Gene Carter, CEO of ASCD,

an organization providing professional development to

educators across the country and around the world.

Thanks to new teaching methods, materials, curriculaand technology, education is evolving more quickly than

ever before. Many teachers need support to continually

update and improve their teaching. In the fast-paced digital

age, teachers skill sets must continue to grow for theirstudents to see continued success.

For example, according to Carter, the introduction o

new common education standards is driving change in

classrooms across the country. ASCD offers conferences, workshops, Webinars, online training and even on-site

capacity building to instill new skills and better strategies

that help educators work with these new standards adopted

    by states nationwide.

According to experts, ongoing professional developmen

is critical to empowering educators to support the success

    of each learner.

The key [to school improvement] is exemplary teaching

along with stellar professional development that challenges,

supports and inspires teachers to refine practices to

improve student learning, notes Lynda Wood, associate

superintendent for Southfield Public Schools in Michigan, about her experience with ASCD.

As Wood observes, highly qualified teachers are a must,

but its ongoing professional development that boosts

student learning to a higher level of achievement and

    growth.

Five years ago, we had extremely low studen

achievement levels, and weve essentially doubled the

number of students who are meeting state standards. Thaspeaks directly to the quality of professional developmen

thats gone on, says Principal Patricia Reynolds from

Queens after ASCD faculty implemented a long-term

program at her school in New York.

    12 IN 2012: DOCTOR-PRESCRIBED NEW

    YEARS RESOLUTIONS

(NewsUSA) - With the many healthy resolutions being

made to kick off 2012, wouldnt it be nice if you actually

had a doctors opinion to point you toward the healthies

    changes you can make?

A new survey of practicing physicians by EverydayHealth.

com with MedPage Today reveals the 12 most popular

    doctor-prescribed resolutions.

Top 12 Doctor-Prescribed New Years Resolutions for

    2012

    1. Monitor your blood pressure

    2. Quit smoking

    3. Exercise 30 minutes a day

    4. Lower your cholesterol

    5. Get a diabetes screening

    6. Control your portions

    7. Get a flu shot

    8. Take the stairs whenever possible

    9. Sleep at least 7 hours a night

    10. Eat whole grains, not refined flour

    11. For women, perform a self breast

    exam every month

    12. Spend more time with family and

    friends

Although not ranked in the top 12, the

survey includes some resolutions you may

    welcome.

The most surprising: Dont give up coffee.

Yes, thats correct. Coffee actually has

    health benefits that doctors recommend.

Studies show that women who drink a

cup of coffee daily have up to a 25 percent

lower stroke risk than those who drink it

less often. In addition to lowering stroke

risk, coffee can also decrease your odds of

    developing diabetes, skin cancer, cavities,

    Parkinsons disease, breast cancer and

    heart disease.

    Three other noteworthy resolutions

    involved in Everyday Healths survey

are to forgive people, try a once-a-week

technology vacation for at least two monthsand dont text and drive. All great advice.

However, none of these resolutions can

be effective if you cant stay committed to

    them.

About 40 to 45 percent of Americans

make New Years resolutions, and only

about 60 percent end up keeping them for

at least part of the year, says Everyday

    Health Medical Director Mallika Marshall,

MD. The key is not to bite off more than

you can chew. Pledge to make a change

that you can maintain. And try to get friends

and family involved. Its much easier to

meet your goal if you have support.

To view the complete survey, and to gain

more tips and tools to live a healthy, happier

    life every day, visit EverydayHealth.com.

    DEGREE COMPLETION: REMOVING

    BARRIERS TO CAREER SUCCESS

    (NewsUSA) - Earning a bachelors

degree can be a valuable step toward

career success. Fewer than 5 percent of

bachelors degree-holders over the age of

25 are unemployed, compared to a national

unemployment rate thats over 9 percent.

Despite the benefits of degree programs,

many students dont complete the process

due to perceived barriers, such as a full-

time job, family commitments or worries

about achieving a balance between their

personal and professional lives. Others are

eager to start a career and make money.

Although they may think they are getting a

head start on their careers, many of these

students will find that former classmates

who completed their degrees have quickly

caught up with them professionally and are

better equipped to achieve longevity and

    advancement in their careers.

    Job seekers drastically improve their

chances of getting hired by developing what

I call the full suite -- skills, experience and

education, said Joyce Barden, CPA, CBM

and senior professor at DeVry University. It

    all starts with education.

Regardless of how long you have been

out of the classroom, completing a degree

program helps to ensure a competitive

    edge in the job market.

Here are four compelling reasons to re-

commit to education and complete your

    degree:

    Open doors to your future.

A bachelors degree could be the ticket

to a new career or a stepping stone to

advancement in your current field. By

completing your degree, you will master

a skill set and possibly uncover hidden

    strengths.

    Increase your salary.

Last year, full-time workers with college

degrees earned 83 percent more than

those with only a high-school diploma.

    Build your network.

Returning to school will help you meet

    new people, develop potential busines

partnerships and explore new avenues fo

career growth. Everyone we allow into ou

network can offer new ideas that will hel

us to grow personally and professionally.

There is a program that works for you.

Whether you take online courses o

attend classes on campus, you shoul

know that many schools are committed t

    accommodating students busy schedules.

    Such schools often offer integrate

programs that allow full-time or part-tim

students to learn at their own pace throug

an accelerated track or a more traditiona

    program.

    Annette R. Uncangco, MS, directo

of career services at DeVry University

recommends finding a school that offer

flexible scheduling options that allostudents to complete their educatio

while balancing current job and famil

    commitments.

    Advancements in education have helpe

to remove many previous barriers to goin

back to school, allowing many to complet

the education they started. Despite you

past, it is never too late to invest in you

    future.
