    KEEP PESTS FROM

CRASHING YOUR HOLIDAYS(NewsUSA) - For many Americans, colder weather means seasonal

decorations and holiday baking -;but if youre one of those who set outgourds and holly or cookies for Santa, you might be opening your home tosome unwanted guests.

Mice, rodents, spiders and otherpests find their way into homes byhiding in boxes of holiday decorationsthat have been stored in attics, basements and garages since lastseason, says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs forthe National Pest Management Association (NPMA). They create

homes in these undisturbed itemsand then find new places to infestonce these boxes are moved intofamily living quarters.

The holiday season may also bring outpantry pests, which make themselvesat home in pantry foods like flour, cereal, dry pasta, spices, nuts anddried fruit, as well as in decorationsmade from dried flowers andpotpourri. The most common pantrypests are beetles, ants, weevils andIndian meal moths.

So, what can you do to deterunwelcome holiday guests? TheNPMA offers the following tips:

    * Store seasonal decorations inairtight containers. Items like driedfoliage, potpourri and Indian cornshould be carefully stored in theoff-season. Keep them in a dryenvironment, such as a closet oroffice, and unpack them outside.

    * Inspect fresh decorations beforeyou bring them indoors. Look overwreaths, Christmas trees and

garlands to make sure youre notbringing insects into your home.

    * Store food properly. All foodshould be stored in plastic or glasscontainers with sealed lids. Keepcabinets, pantries and countertopsclean and free of crumbs.

    * Examine pantry items before youuse them. Check packages before youbring them home from the store. Neverbuy any item that appears damaged.Throw out expired ingredients. If youhave any ingredients that havent

been used in the past year, inspectthem before use.

If you do find pests, contact a pestprofessional. They will know thebest way to treat an infestation. Formore information on preventing pestsfrom crashing your home this holidayseason or to find a licensed pestprofessional, visit www.pestworld.org.

    SECRETS TO MAKING GOOD

FOOD FAST(NewsUSA) - Todays busy lifestylesleave little time for basic cooking, and

have led to a growing trend of dailyfast food meals -- for breakfast, lunchand dinner! But eating healthy andcooking at home can fit within a busylifestyle if you learn to make quick,15-minute meals.

Deana Gunn and Wona Miniati, authors of the Cooking with TraderJoes cookbooks, are two moms whofound that recipe shortcuts are thekey to quick meals -- and kicking thefast food habit.

By taking fresh ingredients andstrategically coupling them withprepared items and shortcuts fromthe grocery store, we can createhealthy meals in a fraction of the timeit would take to make from scratch, says Gunn.

Most markets now offer fresh, ready-to-use ingredients such as jarredsauces, cut veggies, bagged saladsand marinated meats -- the keyto these easy shortcuts. Here areGunn and Miniatis top 10 kitchentips and tricks for cooking deliciousand easy meals at home, withoutcompromising quality or resorting tothe drive-through:

    1) Use prepared sauces, frommarinaras to curries. Add vegetables

or meats and simmer, or toss sauceswith couscous or pasta.

    2) Add everyday superfoods, likecanned beans or pre-cooked lentils,to soups or salads, or serve themover rice.

    3) Pick up a fully cooked rotisseriechicken. Use the leftovers in wraps orsoups.

    4) Perk up any meal with freshherbs. Add fresh basil to a simplepasta dish, cilantro to plain rice, or

    rosemary to roasting potatoes.

    5) Toss a healthy salad in minutesusing washed and bagged salad.

    6) Salad dressings do double-dutyas fast and flavorful marinades forchicken or meats.

    7) Transform boxed meals such asrice pilaf or mac-n-cheese by addingfrozen vegetables, ready-cubedpancetta or a little curry powder.

    8) Put an end to greasy pizza

delivery. Use ready-made dough toroll out quick pizza crusts that youcan top with your own favorite andhealthy ingredients.

    9) Customize cake and bread mixesto your tastes. Add dried fruits andnuts to a bread mix, or stir lemon andorange zest into a plain white cakemix.

    10) Plan simple recipes for the weekbefore going shopping. If you shopwith meals in mind, youll save timeand wasted groceries.

    SPRUCE UP YOUR FALL

WARDROBE FOR LESS(NewsUSA) - As the temperaturesget colder, families start packingup their shorts and sundresses andpulling last years warmer garmentsrom boxes. And inevitably, many oflast autumns clothes no longer fit orare too worn.

Replacing entire wardrobes cancreate unneeded stress, but thereare ways to dress the whole family

    without breaking the bank.

    * Look for versatile wardrobe staples.Women and girls should build theirwardrobe with a nice skirt or dress, dress pants, jeans, sweaters anda jacket. Men and boys need khakipants, jeans, sweaters and collaredshirts.

    * Skip fancy department stores. Youllsave time and money by shopping atyour local discount retailer. Youll findinexpensive basic apparel, often forless than $16 apiece.

    * Look for deals on denim. Everyonein your family is going to want severalpairs of jeans, and those pricetags can add up quickly. There areinexpensive lines available today thatstill offer quality and value. DollarGeneral sells Bobbie Brooks 5-pocketstretch denim for women, starting at$12, and Open Trails denim for men, starting at $10.

    TIPS FOR STRESS-FREE AIR

TRAVEL(NewsUSA) - Man-made and naturaldisruptions to air travel are all-too-often the norm. Not only can weatherdelay take-offs and landings, but newairline rules can also keep planesgrounded.

For example, if a plane is sitting onthe tarmac for more than three hours,it has to return to the gate. On theupside, there are ways to cope withthe unexpected. Here are a fewsimple tips to prepare for delaysbefore leaving home:

    * Print copies of itineraries withthe 800 numbers for your airline, and others that fly the same route, just in case you have to rebook fromthe airport. The paper-free option?E-mail those numbers or enter themmanually into your smartphone.

    * Check airline Web sites for delaypostings. New rules mandate thatairlines have this information online. Alternatively, you can go to www.flightstats.com.

    * Make sure you can access youroffice and home computers in the

event you are stuck while traveling.Free and inexpensive programs likeLogMeIn (www.LogMeIn.com) makeit quick, easy and secure to accessfiles, calendars and applications fromany computer, smartphone, netbooor iPad with an Internet connection.

    * Enlist a friend or family membewho knows their way around onlinetravel sites, and keep them on youmobile phone speed dial. If you haveto make alternative plans, they canprobably do it faster than anyone.

    * Remember travel insurance.few extra dollars tacked onto theprice of your trip can provide peaceof mind if you have to change plansfor unforeseen reasons. Check whayour airline, travel agent, booking siteand credit cards offer to make surethat youre covered.

    * Have fun. Many airports areadding luxuries like spas, high-endrestaurants and even showers tokeep passengers happy. Find ouwhat your airport, and the ones thayou will visit, offer before you go,so youre able to enjoy them to thefullest.

While there is no surefire guaranteefor disruption-free air travel, a littleadvanced planning can go a longway -- even all the way to youdestination.
