It’s evident that alcohol is a contributory factor in many antisocial incidents and Strathclyde Police have just launched a campaign to raise awareness about the consequences of buying alcohol for those who are underage. Over the past five years, there has been a significant reduction in the number of antisocial behaviour incidents, such as youth disorder. However, they still think that work needs to be done and the campaign will seek to speak directly to local people, urging them to help police to tackle the issues most affecting their lives and their communities. In a blitz against the booze, officers will continue to visit licensed premises to deter underage purchase and to offer advice, support and reassurance to staff. Staff themselves will be reminded not to sell alcohol to anyone who is already drunk and to be aware that some purchases are being made for underage drinkers. The main aim will be to reduce the amount of alcohol getting into the hands of underage drinkers. The campaign which kicked off last Monday, (15 October) will build on the success already achieved and will run for four weeks. It will feature radio ads, posters in schools and street stencils, as well as advertising within licensed trade publications and mirror stickers inside bars and clubs. Chief Superintendent Bob Hamilton told the Re- Gen, “There’s no doubt that alcohol is a common factor in these crimes and what we want to do is raise the awareness about the impact it can have. These crimes are happening where you live and I would ask that everyone helps us to reduce the amount of alcohol getting into the hands of young people – remember it’s your street, your choice. Don’t buy alcohol for youngsters who are hanging about outside shops – you’re not helping them and you’re not helping your community.” The Force is fully committed to reducing incidents of antisocial behaviour and disorder and this campaign emphasises that commitment. It is part of the long term strategy to tackle violence, disorder and antisocial behaviour and illustrates Strathclyde Police’s ongoing commitment to keeping people safe. Members of Lodge Eastmuir No. 1126 in Shettleston have once again come to the fore in raising funds for a very worth-while cause. The “Friends of Eastmuir” held a Sponsored Walk recently and raised the magnificent sum of £2077-00 which the members decided would go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Founda-

tion. Lodge Eastmuir members have a fantastic reputation as far as raising money over the years, for good causes is concerned and this year is no different. Holly Davies, Chief fund-raiser for Cen-tral Scotland was invited along to the premises in Shettleston Road recently, to be presented with the cheque by some of the representatives from Lodge Eastmuir and she was delighted to accept on behalf of a very worthwhile cause.

An East End minibus driver was caught with £2.5m of cannabis stashed inside his vehicle on the M74 motor-way. William O’Brien was stopped by police acting on a tip off close to Hamilton Services in South Lanarkshire. A large number of cardboard boxes

were found within the Ford Transit minibus, containing 2920 bars of the drug. At the High Court in Glasgow last Wednesday, O’Brien admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis on December 13 last year. The 31-year-old, from Springboig, Glasgow, was

remanded in custody ahead of being sentenced next month. O’Brien made no comment when arrested while police found the bars of cannabis resin weighed around 292kg, with an approximate street value of £2.5m. Lady Stacey deferred sentencing until next month for reports.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment.

A new garden at Sacred Heart Primary School, Bridgeton is the latest in a series of envi-ronmental improvements to be delivered by Clyde Gateway. The garden has been built within the school playground and is the result of the commu-nity benefits element of a con-tract to clean-up the site of the Dalmarnock Gas Works, work currently being carried out by I & H Brown, the Perth-based civil engineering and remedia-tion specialists area. Designed in a style which will encourage the pupils to learn about and become involved in nature, the Sacred Heart Garden contains planting areas for shrubs and trees, decking and a soft play area. It is also the home of a new memorial bench which has been dedicated to the late Mrs Betty Redmond, a much-loved community stalwart who passed away in 2011. The official opening was carried out recently by George Redmond, the local council-lor for the Calton Ward, Board Member of Clyde Gateway, and son of the late Betty Redmond. As part of the opening, Council-lor Redmond planted some

bulbs in the garden with the help of members of the Sacred Heart Pupil Council. Councillor Redmond told the Re-Gen, “It is really moving that the school has honoured my late mother with the memorial bench. I know she would have been very proud of this wonderful

new garden which not only brightens up another corner of Bridgeton but allows the pupils to learn about nature in such a hands-on way.” The garden was built at a cost of £36,000 and took six weeks to construct over the summer holidays between school terms.

Mrs Elizabeth Gonzalez, the Head Teacher at Sacred Heart said, “The pupils are thrilled with the garden. It is really pleasing that they now have such a unique area to both play and learn, and on behalf of everyone at the school, I would like to thank Clyde Gateway for making this happen.” The

Sacred Heart Garden is the fifth environmental improve-ment scheme delivered in the east end by Clyde Gateway since 2009, and follows-on

from works at the Tullis Street Memorial Gardens, Bridgeton Cross, the Calton Burial Grounds and the Bridgeton Olympia renovation.

The moon in Libra is making you look at all your relationships and you are mulling over who is best to keep on side and who to let go, scruples will not come into it this time around and all judgements will be based on loyalty, remember to try to be tactful as you never know when you may need to call in a favour.

Life is about to step up a gear so buckle yourself in and get ready to get into the fast lane, people will make demands on your time and you are being recognised for your talents, new people place and responsibilities come flowing to you now, so be prepared to say no to those who are not going to take you to your goals.

A sign who can be a little confusing as to what you want it is time to sort out the wheat from the chaff, time to allow the passion of life to come to the fore front of your life and take a risk into getting what you want for a change, new doors are being opened, go on walk in!

What would life be like if we didn’t have any problems? Boring? Well you r problems are not as bad as you think and if you put two heads together rather than one you will come to the conclusion a lot faster, try to leave the past in the past, it has no use in the present!

There are endings and new beginnings now for some and as the moon is in Libra some may be thinking of long lost loves, please do not go over past pains, learn, move and become stronger from the lesson it taught a sign of polar opposites you must be aware that you are always in control of your own emotions, love yourself and everything else will be good.

Hard work has never phased you and learning from your mistakes is to your credit, time is pushing you forward with Pluto in your sign it is urging you to trust your intuition were love is concerned, someone new and with a livelier energy will help you to see the world through new eyes, be open to giving and receiving information from colleges and friends and you may be surprised at the outcome.

No one like a martyr and accepting an unpleasant situation for the sake of peace, is and will cause you and you alone grief, time to take a closer look at those around you and push yourself into new pastures, some of you may need to keep an eye on your health as blood test are prominent for some, keep fatty foods at bay too.

Sensual, deep Scorpio, why oh why do you like to go the long way for a short cut, why can you not go the tested route? New doors are options for transforming your working life and honesty and compassion are the key factors for your emotional life, a sign of great intuition if you can keep out of your head long enough ,try to trust your gut!

One of the luckier sign you seem to be falling into another phase of good fortune, you are now walking away from people and projects that do not coincide with your own wave length, this is good news indeed as sometimes you allow people (not many) to influence you, but now you see the light and you are now heading towards a positive time.

A time of stress is leaving you now and you begin to see the way forward a sign of depth and tenacity you are now feeling strength and optimism returning to you and some of you will find yourselves arranging your finances, insurance policies and bond, as you make sure your nest egg is enough to cushion you over the winter just as a squirrel collects its nuts.

A sign of dual strength, insight and logic, this month you must allow insight to help you in your decisions as Pluto is influencing our imaginations and the moon in Libra our emotions both are very apparent for you this month, two opportunities present themselves to you, which way to go? Trust your intuition and you can’t go wrong.

After a period of feeling a little under par, a lady with fire in her belly helps you to see what has been under your nose, a fruitful few weeks as new situations reveal themselves and some of you may feel like the cat who stole the cream. Try to remember the smaller details before signing paper work and your luck will change.

Glasgow’s leading independent funeral directors Anderson Maguire have just opened another funeral home in the East End. Located at 658 Alexandra Parade, close to the Royal Infirmary. the new facility bridges the gap between the firm’s funeral homes in Springburn Way and Shettleston Road. “We have a large number of families in the Garngad, Townhead and Riddrie areas who use the company when they have a bereavement and this will be more convenient for them” said Angela Maguire, part of the management team at Anderson Maguire’s head office. ”More families than ever are now using our company. They recognise that we offer to very high level of personal service at a very moderate cost, something which is very important to families especially in the current economic climate” said Angela

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

The fourth Annual Public Meeting (APM) of Clyde Gateway is to be held on the evening of Thursday 15 November 2012 with the venue being the Olympia at Bridgeton Cross.

The APM will be the first event to take place in the Olympia since its £10 million refurbishment.

As with previous years, the format of the evening will see Neil MacDonald and Ian Manson, the Chair and Chief Executive respectively of Clyde Gateway, give an overview of the achievements of the past 12 months and also take questions from members of the audience.

The APM itself will begin at 7pm but the doors to the Olympia will open at 6pm with visitors able to see an exhibition of Clyde Gateway’s activities along with photographs charting the progress of the re-building of the Olympia. Copies of the Clyde Gateway 2011/12 Annual Report, which will be launched on the day of the APM, will also be available. Afterwards, food and refreshments will be offered with Clyde Gateway staff on hand to mingle and talk about the different aspects of their work. Tours of the

Olympia will also be available to anyone interested.

Jim Clark, the Senior Manager for Communications at Clyde Gateway said “The Annual Public Meeting is always an important event in the Clyde Gateway calendar but it takes on more significance this year as it provides the first opportunity for most people to have a look inside the new-look Olympia.

“It is by far the best way to learn more about Clyde Gateway and the invitation to to come along is open to everyone and is not restricted to people who live or work in the Clyde Gateway area. Neil and Ian will be happy to talk about and take questions on any aspect of

the work we are carrying out including our physical projects, our efforts to provide employment opportunities and our partnerships with local community groups.”

While the APM will be the first event to take place in the new-look Olympia, it will not mark its official opening as the fit-out of the ground-floor library and cafe will still be underway while Amateur Boxing Scotland will not be moving into the building until early 2013.

The Olympia is well-connected to the public transport network. It is directly across the road from Bridgeton Station while First Bus Services 18,43,46,64 and 263 go to Bridgeton Cross.

A new organisation has been es-tablished to champion the rights of travelling communities. FAIRTRAC (the Forum for Action, Informa-tion and Rights for Travelling Communities) has been formed to represent showpeople and travel-ling communities in the West of Scotland. It aims to provide a voice for the communities and to create a channel for them to access deci-sion makers. It was formed and launched in Dalmarnock where a large percentage of the popula-tion are travelling showpeople. FAIRTRAC was established with help from Divercity, a local organ-isation that promotes equality and social justice through information and training. A busy public meeting in the Dalmarnock Centre attracted over fifty travelling showpeople with a mix of active and retired individuals. Kenneth Belshaw, from Divercity, explained that it was the perfect time for travelling communities to work together to ensure they were represented in all the exciting developments tak-ing place in the West of Scotland, namely the East End Regeneration; preparation for the Commonwealth Games 2014 and a number of regeneration projects managed by Clyde Gateway, the local regenera-tion agency, and the Forestry Com-mission. Paul Merrick, FAIRTRAC forum member, travelling showperson and representative

on the Divercity board explained: “Travellers and showpeople have an unique culture and history that is often misunderstood by those who live in houses. Equally, travelling communities can often feel isolated from the opportuni-ties available in their areas. In the past few years, I’ve been working alongside travellers to help them in their negotiations with Clyde Gateway. It’s been apparent that the community needs a group to represent their interests and that can bring together Guild and non-Guild members.”Alex-James Colquhoun, Chair-man of the Scottish Section of the Showmen’s Guild and FAIRTRAC forum member added:“We hope FAIRTRAC can act as a bridge between travellers and other bodies. The group is as representative as possible with both men and women aged from their thirties to their seventies.” FAIRTRAC also hopes to cre-ate a space where the travel-ling community can meet and provide information to, and about, travellers and showpeople as well as championing the rights of travellers and showpeople as a minority group. Since the group was formally constituted in July, it has already arranged a meeting between the local showpeople and the Forestry Commission and Clyde Gateway to discuss how the

proposed new development at the Cuningar Loop will impact on nearby sites for travelling show-people. FAIRTRAC’s next initiative will be a development day meeting to be held in the Winter Gardens & People’s Palace in Glasgow on 23rd October from 6pm till 9.30pm. The meeting will allow as many members of the travelling showpeople community as pos-sible to set priorities for the year ahead and raise any issues. Peter McShane, FAIRTRAC Chair (and Vice-Chair of the Scottish Section of the Showmen’s Guild) told the Re-Gen, “We’ve already identified four main headings for discussion: safety; regeneration; education; recreation and leisure. I’ve lived in Glasgow for over 50 years and this is the first time we’ve had a group that respects the contribution of travellers and showpeople, and recognises our place within the local community. I hope as many travelling showpeople as possible will come along to the meeting on the 23rd October as it is a landmark event and could make a massive differences to travellers’ futures.” Transport and childcare can be pro-vided for the meeting on the 23rd Oct, to discuss your requirements please contact Kenneth before the 16th October on 0141 556 6871.For more information about FAIRTRAC, visit www.fairtrac.weebly.com

The former Foxy Bingo Hall at Shandwick Square Shopping Centre has a new lease of life and it’s all down to 3 differ-ent organisations who have teamed together to make the place a much more welcom-ing and satisfying venue for the Easterhouse community. CORE (Community Outreach Easterhouse) came into being last July as part of the Easter-house Community Church run by Stuart Patterson and his wife Tracy and thereby hangs a tale. Stuart was born and raised in Easterhouse and like a few others in the area basi-cally took the wrong road and became involved in drugs and unfortunately became ad-dicted to heroin. Thankfully help was near in the guise of the Teen Challenge (Christian Drug and Alcohol Rehab) and Stuart attended this from May 1997, and eventually working in the project until Septem-ber 2000. He then moved to Ireland where he met Tracy and they were married in March 2001. Now parents with 3 children they all moved back to Scotland in 2009 to work with

the Haven Kilmacolm mens rehab and Teen Challenge Strathclyde. Stuart was now well on the road to recovery and with Tracy’s help they started up the Easterhouse Commu-nity Church in 2011 initially holding their meetings in Blairtummock Community Hall working closely with the Pavillion Youth Cafe to provide activities for the young people of the Blair-tummock area but always in the back of their mind to find premises of their own. Step in Renia Tysler (Manager of Shandwick Shopping Centre) who heard their plight and between her and the parent company British Land (who have been a tremendous supporter of local projects in the Easterhouse area) she was able to offer them the former Foxy Bingo Club in Shandwick Square. Now the church uses the premises to host its worship services and thanks to a very generous donation from British Land of

£8131.00 Stuart and his team have been able to revamp the former “gam-bling den” into a place worthy of welcoming Easterhouse residents to a more fulfilling pastime than “Bingo”. CORE now have an excellent Drop-In venue where people of all ages can get free tea and coffee plus a warm welcome and that is not all. The venue also hosts a ful-ly equipped Jobclub resource room ( Jobcare@CORE) thanks to the excellent dona-tion from British Land and with their help and expertise there is now Internet Ac-cess and materials to assist people who are unemployed back into employment and Further Education. Stuart and Tracy have set aside Thursday nights for CORE Life

which is their work with people who have life controlling problems. They provide a warm, non judgemental atmosphere

where people can begin to face the issues that hold them back from reclaiming their lives and in January they will be launching the training aspect of this as well. Another big plus that has occurred since CORE came back to Easterhouse was in August the inaugural “Arise Easterhouse” community Gala Day took place and this proved very successful. CORE run a Sunday evening children’s programme which runs alongside the adult eve-ning service at the premises in Westerhouse Road ( just past the main doors of the Shopping Centre), and of course there are various Kids activities running throughout the year. Why not take a trip along and see for yourself just what is on offer at CORE, Stuart and Tracy and the team will be delighted to see you.

Scotland’s biggest social landlord this week marked a milestone in its drive to create life-changing career opportunities for young people – by hiring its 100th Modern Apprentice. Glasgow Housing Association has recruited 31 new trainees this year to join its award-winning appren-ticeship programme. The school leavers and young adults will fol-low in the footsteps of three earli-er intakes of apprentices recruited in 2009, 2010 and 2011 – taking the figure up to 100. Most of the young people have joined GHA as Modern Apprentices working in housing, while some are training in gardening and neighbourhood maintenance. The apprenticeship scheme is creating career opportunities for young people from some of the poorest parts of the country – with 60 of the 100 recruits living

in the bottom 15 per cent of the most deprived neighbourhoods in Scotland. The apprenticeship pro-gramme is part of Glasgow City Council’s Commonwealth Appren-ticeship Initiative and is supported by the Scottish Government and Skills Development Scotland. The 2011 recruits are in the second year of their course – and are well placed to secure posts with the GHA group as they come up. GHA Chief Executive Martin Armstrong said: “We’ve already spent more than £1.1billion making our homes warmer, drier and better in every way. But we want to do much more than provide better homes – we want to create better lives for our tenants and our factored homeowners. “One way we can achieve this is by working with our partners to create jobs and train-ing places through initiatives such as our apprenticeship programme.

Milestone for GHA as 100 young people join apprentice scheme

“To reach this landmark is a fantas-tic achievement for GHA and I wish every one of the apprentices long and successful careers.” Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The Commonwealth Ap-prenticeship Initiative is part of

the £25m Glasgow Guarantee – a Games Legacy project which is aimed at ensuring every Glaswe-gian between the age of 16 and 24 has access to a job or training. “It’s the backing of partners like GHA which has helped make this unique scheme such a huge success.

If you claim Housing Benefit to help pay your rent you may be affected by changes from April 2013. The changes mean that some people will get less Housing Benefit than they did before.

This information will help you find out what’s happening and how you can prepare as many tenants will be concerned about the changes to Housing Benefit. How many bedrooms do you have? From April 2013 if you rent a Housing Association property and have one or more spare bedrooms your Housing Benefit may get reduced. You could be affected if…• You are 16 to 61 years old• If you are working and only get a small amount of Housing Benefit• Even if you are sick or disabled What is classed as a “spare” bedroom? If you have more bedrooms than the Government says you need, under the new rules you will lose part of your Housing Ben-efit.

The new rules state you will be allocated one bedroom for: • Each adult couple• Any other person age 16 or over• Two children of the same sex under 16• Two children under the age of 10 regardless of sex• Any other child• A carer (who does not normal-ly live with you) if you or your partner need overnight care.

It doesn’t matter who uses the spare room, the new rules will even apply if:• You and your partner need to sleep apart because of a medical

condition• The main home of your chil-dren is another address, but you have a spare room for when they stay over with you eg. Ac-cess to children

What happens if you have a spare bedroom? If you have one spare bedroom your Housing Benefit will be cut by 14% of the rent you pay weekly. If you have two or more spare bedrooms you will lose 25% of the rent you pay weekly. You will have to pay to your landlord the difference between your Housing Benefit and your rent if your benefit is cut.Limit on BenefitsFrom April 2013, there will be a cap on the overall amount of benefit you can receive.

The Government will add up how much money you get from a range of benefits including: housing benefit, jobseekers al-lowance, employment support allowance, child benefit, child tax credit and carer’s allow-ance.

If the amount of your benefits add up to more than the maxi-mum allowed your housing benefit will be reduced.

From April 2013 the maximum amount of benefit you will be entitled to is:• £500 per wk for single par-ents• £500 per wk for couples with or without children• £350 per week for single peo-ple without children This will not apply if….• You get pension credit or working tax credit• A member of your household is claiming disability living al-lowance, attendance allowance or the support element of em-ployment support allowance.

Changes to Housing Benefit

Welfare ReformHere are some frequently asked questions in relation to Wel-fare Reform and the introduction of the new Universal Credit.

What is Universal Credit? It’s a benefit that will replace working tax credit, child tax credit, housing benefit, income support, job seekers allowance and employment and support allowance. All of these benefits will be paid as one “Univer-sal Credit”.

Who will receive Universal Credit? Single people or a couple jointly of working age can get Universal Credit. However, it won’t be payable if you have savings of £16,000 or more and to qualify you have to accept a “Claimant Commitment”.

What is a Claimant Commitment? All claimants must agree to meet requirements related to finding work. There will be sanctions for failing to meet any of the requirements under the Claimant Commitment.

What is Working Age? Anyone over 16 and under the age of 61 at the time Universal Credit is introduced in October 2013.

How do you apply for Universal Credit? Applications must be made to the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). The expectation is that you will apply on-line using a computer rather than filling in a form or going to an office to make a claim.

How will Universal Credit be paid? It will be paid monthly in arrears and anyone receiving Universal Credit must have a bank account. If you don’t have a bank account, you REALLY need to get one before Universal Credit comes into force.

When does Welfare Reform begin? The reforms will begin next October and anyone in receipt of the benefits covered by Universal Credit will be placed on the new system by the end of 2017. However, if you’re circumstances change, you will move to the new system right away.

Will Benefits be capped? Yes, from April 2013 no couple or single parent can receive more than £26,000 per annum and single claimants can’t receive more than £18,000 per annum.

What about my housing benefit? Under the new system, any help you receive with your rent will be part of Universal Credit. You will have to pay rent yourself as there will no lon-ger be direct payments to your landlord as happens under the current system. Failure to pay your rent will result in arrears and housing providers may have no option but to take court action and seek eviction.

Is there anything I should do now? Yes. If you receive ben-efits and think you’ll be affected by these reforms, you should seek advice right away. Contact a Welfare Advice centre im-mediately or speak to your landlord. The worst thing you can do is ignore the fact that changes are going to be introduced.

West of Scotland Housing Association (WSHA) is currently exploring the benefits of a partnership with Gentoo Group. The two organisations are currently in discussions to find out what a partnership could mean and the benefits it could bring to tenants.

Duncan McNaught, Chief Executive of West of Scotland Housing Association said: “We are exploring a potential partnership because we are looking to the future and the financial challenges that all housing associations will face in the next few years. These challenges include welfare reform which is likely to reduce the income available to all associations, and the need to invest more money in our houses to achieve higher energy efficiency targets which could help protect our tenants from rising energy costs.

“We need to adapt, and believe it is not an option to do nothing in the face of the challenges ahead.” WSHA believes that making this positive change will make the Association fitter for these challenges. It will help ensure the Association continues to be able to provide the best homes and services possible for its tenants and communities in the long term.

Gentoo Group is a well established housing provider and regulated in England by the Homes and Communities Agency. With a strong track record, throughout the years it has demonstrated commitment to high standards, good quality homes, and strong communities. More than just a housing association, Gentoo is about improving lives by investing in people, the planet and property based activities.

The two organisations therefore share similar values and a strong cultural fit with similar aspirations around creating sustainable communities and homes that are fit for the future.

Duncan continues, “We have been impressed by what we have seen in our discussions with and visits to Gentoo. We are now looking in detail at what real benefits a partnership with Gentoo could provide.”

If West of Scotland Housing Association joined Gentoo Group it would stay as a housing association registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator as well as keep its name and ownership of its housing. WSHA will still employ its own staff, work from its present offices and remain being governed by its own Management Committee. Most importantly, tenants will keep their existing rights and their landlord will remain as West of Scotland Housing Association. Gentoo Group would be WSHA’s parent body and set the overall Group strategy.

Duncan concludes, “These are exciting times for the Association, this partnership has the potential to provide new solutions to the challenges we face.”

Staff at GHA are talking individually to tenants who may affected by one of the changes to benefits which is coming soon. From April next year, the help tenants get with their rent will be reduced if they are working age and they under-occupy their home. That means if their home is considered to have more rooms than they need, the amount of Housing Benefit they get will be reduced. GHA’s local housing officers are arranging to talk to tenants who could be deemed to be ‘under-occupying’. They will discuss the best options for dealing with the change. Any GHA tenant who thinks they may be affected by this, should call GHA on 0800 4797979 or speak to their housing officer. GHA tenants can also arrange an appointment with a Welfare Benefits Advisor for help with their benefits or a Money Advisor for help with managing money and debts. Call 0800 4797979.

Without work, welfare reform won’t work, says Labour MP Margaret CurranThe plans of the Tory-led Government to reform Housing Benefit will have a profound ef-fect on many people in the East End of Glasgow. As many of my constituents will be aware, too many people are struggling to get by, to put food on the table for their families or even find decent employment in a tremendously uncertain job market. The current economic climate is affecting everyone and the East End is being hit particularly hard. The priority for the Tory-led Government must be to provide the means by which people can improve their lives. This can be done through the creation of training programmes or facilitat-ing the economic circumstances in which jobs are created. However, at the moment it is abundantly clear that this is

not the Tory-led Government’s priority. Having spoken to people from across the constituency, it is clear the plan of the Tory-led Government to introduce the Universal Credit is causing great concern. There is a very real anxiety amongst my constitu-

ents as to how the reforms will affect them and the severe financial hit they will take when the reforms start to bite. Do not get me wrong, I be-lieve that the welfare system as it stands is no longer sustain-able and proper, careful reform to the system is needed. We are not against reform, quite the opposite; I believe we need to find a way to encourage people that can work to find work and get off benefits. However, to do this we must understand the reality facing individuals and families in the current economic climate and it is clear the Tory-led Government is turning a blind eye to the plight of those most in need. At their recent party confer-ence, the Tories pledged to reduce the welfare bill by a further £10 billion. But who is going to pay for this and where

are the savings going to come from? The burden of Welfare Reform should not rest on the shoulders of the poorest and most vulnerable people in our communities. The new rules concerning housing benefit and under occupancy provision will af-fect 70,000 housing benefit claimants in Scotland with an average loss in income of £11 per week. The changes also mean that housing benefit will be paid directly to recipients (rather than landlords) putting vulner-able individuals under increased strain. We know that Housing Associations are concerned about how this is going to affect payments but we have heard nothing from the Tory-led government as to how this will work in practice or how they will ensure people do not fall

into a cycle of rent arrears. And of course, all of this is happening at the same time as tenants face a drop in benefits of close to £600 a year. In addition to the changes being made to payments under the new system, the so called ‘Bedroom Tax’ will see housing benefit slashed by 14 per cent for one extra empty bedroom.

This will rise to 25 per cent for two or more extra bedrooms. This raises the grim spectrum of pensioners, their families having moved away, paying an extra £80 a month in rates, be-fore gas, electricity, TV licence and phone bills are taken into account. Changes such as these have the potential to inflict serious

consequences on some of the most vulnerable people in our city. The reality is clear. The Tories are cutting too far and too fast. As the economy continues to suffer and welfare reforms start to bite, the poorest will be the hardest hit in these reforms. The Tory-led Government must stop and think again.

Call 0800 4797979.

coming soon…

A team of employees from North Lanarkshire Council repairs and maintenance provider Morrison Scotland have completed a charity bike ride in aid of homeless charity Shelter and St Andrew’s Hospice. The seven riders from North Lanarkshire and Perth completed the 58 mile journey from Morrison’s Perth office to its Coatbridge depot in one day. The road riders were helped out in their fundraising by their colleagues in Coatbridge who took it in turns to ride an exercise bike, clocking up an impressive 115 miles during the day. After notching up 173 miles on and off the road, the team managed to raise over £860 for its two charities. The funds will now be split evenly between Shelter and Morrison Scotland’s charity partner St Andrew’s Hospice. Katie Mulgrew, Director of fundraising at St Andrew’s Hospice said: “When it comes to partnerships Morrison Scotland certainly don’t hang about. This new charity partnership with the Hospice has seen many of the team get on their bike to raise much needed funds. I’m delighted that the event was a huge success and I would like to thank the on the road cyclists, in house cyclists and the support team who made all of this possible. We look forward to working with the team at Morrison Scotland and cementing this wonderful partnership further.” Willie Docherty, Managing Director, Morrison Scotland told the Re-Gen: “Everyone who took part in the bike ride really enjoyed the experience and thankfully the weather was kind. We are really pleased to be

able to present £430 to our local charity partner St Andrew’s hospice and the same amount to our national charity partner Shelter.” The bike ride was undertaken as part of Morrison’s nationwide charity bike ride, which was organised in order to

raise money for Morrison’s charity partner Shelter and four locally chosen charities: Marie Curie Cancer Care, Childhood Eye Cancer Trust, Manchester’s Christies Hospital and North Lanarkshire’s St Andrew’s Hospice. In total employees from across the company

covered 903 miles and raised over £4,100 for its five nominated charities. Pictured above: Morrison Scotland team are welcomed home by Bob Reid of St Andrew’s Hospice after Perth to Coatbridge charity ride.

Morrison Scotland have teamed up to promote the annual “LIGHT UP A LIFE” Caring Christmas Campaign which sees Christmas Tree lights sponsored friends of St Andrews Hospice. The campaign began in 1993 and has grown since then with trees in villages throughout North and South Lanarkshire and the lights on these trees have been getting sponsored during the past 18 years. This year Morrison Scotland have got involved to sponsor the appeal as the hospice has to raise £49,000 a week to maintain vital care services for patients and their families and

the hospice reports that last years appeal enabled them to provide 3 weeks of care. The “LIGHT UP A LIFE” basically begins now although the Tree Lighting ceremony at St Andrews Hospice won’t take place until the 2nd of December at 7.00pm. Morrison Scotland will have a number of their apprentices there on the night handing out leaflets and generally promoting the Hospice and the great work it does. Anyone wishing to find out more about this great event should either look out for the Hospice Newsletter dropping through your door or contact the St Andrews Hospice direct on 01236-766951.

Parkhead Housing Association held its Annual “The Great-est Show on Earth” variety show recently in Quarrybrae School in Crail Street and once again it proved a resounding success. Hosted by the hilarious Janey Godley the acts were top class and to declare a winner would be hard on them all suffice to say everyone was a winner. The Parkhead Variety show is in aid of the Parkhead Edu-cational Bursary. This bursary was awarded for the first time this year and is worth £2000 to a local student to help them finish their education. The proceeds from the show

will be added to the total so that next year the hous-ing association can help two students. The show was part of Parkhead Housing Associa-tion’s 35th anniversary cel-ebrations and the whole team at the Helenvale Street offices led by Jim Strang deserve a big

pat on the back for arrang-ing and organising the whole evening which was needless to say a complete sell out. Thanks also must go to John Wheatley College technical department students who pro-vided the sound and lighting for the production.

Following the horrific revela-tions concerning Jimmy Saville and the recent disappearance of the young girl in Wales all parents are right to be concerned about the safety of their children. It seems to be coming more and more common that stories of child abuse emerge but what can we do about it? Well for a start we can probably sit our children down and tell them of the dangers that are lurking out there not only with strangers but also unforgivably with peo-ple they may know and trust.

For far too long we have stressed the fact that “Stranger Danger” is what we have to be aware of but latest figures prove that more and more offences are being committed by folk we know and trust. Win-

ning a child’s trust is the main part of the armoury that child abusers depend on and the youngsters are then placed in a position where abuse can be carried out with the child being warned that “something bad will happen to them if they tell anyone about “their secret”. Parents must now treat any change in their child’s behaviour

as a warning and find out what exactly is causing the kid to behave this way - listen to what they tell you and act on it if you feel uncomfortable. Any police officer will treat such allegations as priority and will certainly take steps to clear them up as soon as possible. Children of a young age should be able to play and enjoy their childhood without wor-rying about predators and it’s down to all responsible adults to look out for our youngsters. Although there is a major worry about child abuse in the press at the moment and rightly so, there is also a train of thought that it is not as prevalent as we maybe think. So although we are asking you to be aware of persons who may be a harm to kids out there, we are also saying that the majority of people have nothing but good in their hearts. Pay attention to where your children are playing, listen to what they are saying and make sure they know to “Yell and Tell” if confronted by anyone they are unsure of.

Protect our Kids - They depend on you

During the winter months, dark eve-nings and inclement weather can make driving conditions extremely dangerous and leads to seasonal spikes in road traf-fic collisions.

Sergeant William Graham from the Divisional Road Policing which covers Glasgow North East and East Dunbar-tonshire offers advice to motorists on driving in common winter weather condi-tions and for ensuring your vehicle is ad-equately prepared for a cold snap.

“There are three main contributory factors for road traffic collisions at this time of year; snow / ice, flooding and ex-tended hours of darkness.

Snow and IceWhen driving through snow and ice it

is crucial to remember that your stopping distance is increased ten times. If you start to skid on snow/ice do not brake heavily as this will lock your wheels and cause you to skid further, instead con-sider changing to a lower gear.

When pulling away use second gear, easing your foot off the clutch gently to avoid wheel-spin

FloodingAvoid driving through flooded areas

where possible as this can flood your en-gine and cause you to breakdown. On oc-casions where you need to drive through standing water, avoid the deepest water which is usually nearest to the kerb and drive slowly in first gear with the engine revving at a high rate. Once you have passed through the water, check it safe to do so and test your brakes to make sure they are working properly.

Darker Evenings and MorningsSwitch on lights as soon as it starts to

get dark using dipped headlights in urban areas and full beam on other roads. Make sure you dip the lights when there is someone in front or coming towards you.

Be aware that pedestrians are harder to spot in the dark and may not be vis-ible until they are very close. In particular, take care when driving near schools and in residential areas, where children may be walking or cycling. These road users are very vulnerable as they are both hard to spot in the dark and may act unpredict-ably. Slow right down to 20mph. If you hit someone at this speed they have more than a nine in ten chance of survival com-pared with about 50/50 at 30mph.

When it comes to your motor vehicle there are some key points to remember to help ensure your safety.

Check your tyres and lightsTo help lower the risk of skidding,

check both your car’s tyre condition and pressure are correct before you drive. The current legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but during the winter months it is a sensible idea to ensure your tyres have at least 3mm of tread depth. This should also help increase your car’s fuel efficien-cy and lower your petrol costs.

Dark mornings and dark evenings can make driving extremely dangerous. It is therefore crucial to ensure all your lights are clean and working properly. Always replace any broken bulbs immediately

otherwise you will not only find it difficult to see the road clearly, you run the risk of not being seen by other drivers. Make sure you know where your front and back fog lights are.Ensure you can see clearly

Winter weather can make it more dif-ficult to see clearly when you are driving. To help lower the risk of having an acci-dent always make sure the windscreen is clean and clear, you have plenty of screenwash and your wiper blades are in good condition. If your windows are cov-ered in frost, make sure you de-ice them before driving and don’t forget to clear your mirrors too.

Be prepared It is a sensible idea to put together an

emergency winter survival kit so that you are prepared should you break down or have an accident. Remember to include a torch, warm clothes, blankets, food, ice scraper and a first aid kit. It’s also impor-tant to always carry a fully charged mo-bile phone and the number of your car breakdown service with you so that you can call for help should you need it.

Drive safely Finally, make sure you take extra care

on the roads. Allow more time for jour-neys and try to avoid rushing. In the fog watch your speed as fog can give the impression of slow motion in oncom-ing traffic. Wherever possible try to use major routes which have been gritted or salted. Be aware that not everyone on the road will be experienced in driving in these types of conditions so remain alert at all times.”

FROSTY STARTThe last few weeks have seen a no-

ticeable change in weather conditions. The sudden drop in temperature has seen a sudden increase in stolen motor vehicles - a seasonal trend which, this year, Strathclyde Police’s ‘B’ Division aims to avoid. Motorists are urged to refrain from leaving their motor vehicles unat-tended to defrost as criminals actively patrol residential areas in the hope of finding a vehicle which is unattended. A degree of expertise is required to steal a modern vehicle if the criminal is not in possession of the key, however, any op-portunist thief can drive off in a car if it is left unlocked with the key in the ignition and the engine running. Moreover, insur-ance companies will generally refuse to pay out if it can be demonstrated that the car was stolen in this manner. This can be a very upsetting and costly mis-take to learn from if you fall victim to this type of crime.

LEGAL HIGHS – HEIGHT OF STU-PIDITY

Strathclyde Police’s ‘B’ Division is is-suing a warning to the public over sub-stances commonly known as ‘legal highs’. Over the last few months there have been a number of people taken se-riously ill following the use of a legal high named ‘Annihilation’.

‘Annihilation’ as it is known, is de-scribed as herbal incense and is being used predominantly by young people in an around the Glasgow area. It is one of the many substances that authori-

ties have been made aware of in recent months and officers in B Division are warning of the risks associated. Con-stable Joanne Matulevicze from London Road said, “I have been involved in a number of incidents where teenage girls have been hospitalised after taking the legal high known as ‘Annihilation’. The symptoms demonstrated include col-lapse, shortness of breath, paranoia and aggression. The greatest concern about these substances is that the consequenc-es of consuming them are unknown. Do not associate the term ‘legal high’ with safety as these substances may have far more severe health implications than is presently known.”

SERIOUS INCIDENT SHETTLESTONAt around 0635 hours on Thursday 11

October 2012, a 23 year old male, Jordan McGuire died following a disturbance within a flat in Shettleston. Two people have been arrested in connection with the male’s death.

Area Commander for Shettleston, Chief Inspector Pat O’Callaghan said, “Despite the best efforts of my officers who first attended at the scene and at-tempted to administer life saving treat-ment, a 23 year old male died following a disturbance in Shettleston. We would like to reassure the public that this ap-pears to be an isolated incident and the wider community is not at risk. There will be extra patrols of police officers in and around the area where this incident oc-curred.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the male’s death and have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

MYRIADOperation Myriad is now entering its

third week and the figures for continue to improve. We’re pleased to report some more great results from the past week (10/10/12 – 16/10/12):

• 108 individuals have been arrested and reported to the procurator fiscal for alleged crimes relating to anti-social be-haviour and violent crime.

• 37 have been arrested or reported to the procurator fiscal for alleged drug offences, including 4 drug dealers being uncovered.

• 60 traffic tickets, attracting 3 pen-alty points each, have been handed out for traffic offences – the equivalent of 15 people losing their driving licence.

• Offenders have been fined more than £12,000 for traffic offences and anti-social behaviour.

• Officers successfully removed drugs and offensive weapons from the streets, with 310 individuals being prosecuted af-ter successful stop searches.

• Officers made 624 visits to licensed premises to ensure they were complying with the law and selling alcohol respon-sibly.

• 195 litres of alcohol were seized – the equivalent of 260 bottles of wine, or 390 cans of lager, being removed from the streets.

Our officers are working hard to keep people safe and address the issues which cause most concern for local com-munities. If you have any concerns or information about your local area please

contact your Local Community Policing Team on 0141 532 2000.

FIREWORKS – A Safety Message from Strathclyde Police

During the months of October and No-vember each year, Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue see a huge rise in calls to deliberate fires and fire-works being discharged dangerously.

This year, police in Glasgow North, East and East Dunbartonshire division have joined forces with the fire service and the local authority to Keep People Safe by acting early to prevent deliberate fires, unsupervised bonfires and reck-less use of fireworks from causing harm within our communities.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Maw-son, Divisional Commander for the East and North of Glasgow said “Each year, we drive home the same messages to our communities that not only do fire and fireworks cause real harm to people and property, but cause a great deal of distress to certain groups such as the el-derly as loud, and powerful fireworks go off near to them in the streets and their homes.

This year once more, we are pleased to be working closely with our partners in the fire service and the local authori-ties to prevent fires and reduce the dam-age they cause.

During October and November, my officers will be on the streets in greater numbers, and we will be actively dis-couraging members of the public from holding bonfires in public places that are not organized.

Glasgow has one of the biggest fire-works displays in the country, and there are many other local displays that are safe, organized and well supervised. We do hope that people enjoy these events, but do it safely and responsibly”.

Mr Mawson added “We would urge the community to contact us where wood and other kindling materials start to build up in open spaces. These events can and often do become the source of accidents, fatalities and flash points for drinking and disorder. Anyone with any concerns should contact us on 0141 532 4000 or their local community police of-ficer”.

Bonfire Danger – A Message From Strathclyde Fire & Rescue

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue have this month launched their campaign to run between 17th October and 5th Novem-ber, featuring firefighter Natalie Brown – the message – a simple one: During the bonfire period firefighters can be twice or three times as busy as normal and there is potential for crews to take longer to attend a serious fire in the area because they are dealing with a bonfire.

Highlighting the danger caused by firesetting during the bonefire season, Director of Community Safety, Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay said,

“Although we have sufficient resourc-es to deal with all 999 calls, I would like to emphasise the benefits of attending an organised display. We are asking the community to help us by joining the fight against fire. By choosing to attend an organised public fireworks display, rather than creating potentially dangerous bon-

fires, the community can help minimise fire service activity, thus making sure resources stand ready to deal promptly with a genuine emergencies.”

Strathclyde Fire & Rescue’s advertising and media campaign for 2102-2013 is as-sisting to reduce house fires, casualties and preventable fire deaths as much as possible. Often, a combination of factors come together to greatly increase the risk of fire occurring and of the house-holder being injured as a result. Over the bonfire period, deliberate firesetting is a significant risk.

Millions of pounds are going up in smoke each year due to the high number of deliberate fires and bonfires attended by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.

Over the three week bonfire period each year Strathclyde Fire and Rescue attend over 1,500 emergency calls to fires involving bonfire material, rubbish bins, refuse skips and unoccupied build-ings many of which spread to occupied houses and business properties.

When deployed at a nuisance fires or unsafe bonfires at this time of year there may be a delayed response to a serious fire emergency. As a direct consequence of deliberate fire setting, people and property are at increased risk at this time of year.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue are sup-porting improved refuse uplift and clean up arrangements throughout the bonfire and firework period and also calling for increased support from Local Authorities and the public to ensure dangerous bon-fires are reported and uplifted.

Deliberate fire setting is also a grow-ing environmental problem with the toxic combustion products and carbon emissions arising from bonfires and deliberate fires significantly adding to concerns about climate change. Fire of-ficers are also advising that person’s with respiratory problems such asthma should not be exposed to smoke or fumes from bonfires or fireworks.

The message is simple, fire causes in-jury, it damages property and smoke is harmful to people and the environment.

Whilst a safely organised garden or street bonfire can be fun, the community should be aware that it is an offence to light a fire in a public place which alarms, annoys or endangers people or property. It is also illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to be sold or be in possession of fireworks and an offence to let fireworks off in a public place. Responsible parents are being asked to ensure that children and young people do not have access to fireworks, cigarette lighters or matches.

Fire Officers strongly advise responsi-ble members of the public to think care-fully about the safety risks and environ-mental damage caused by bonfires and fireworks and encourage the public to attend a safely organised public display.

We are asking the public to report any fly tipping or accumulations of rubbish and refuse direct to their Local Author-ity or alternatively the national ‘Dumb Dumpers’ Stop line operated by SEPA Tel 0845 2 30 40 90 and also to report retail-ers or traders suspected of illegally sell-ing fireworks, to Consumer and Trading Standards Officers.

COUNCILLOR Gordon Matheson, the Leader of Glasgow City Council, marked the dawn of a new era for Scottish sport as he officially opened the stunning new Emirates Arena in the East End of Glasgow last week.

Over 400 children from primary schools across Glasgow were the very first people to use the £113million venue, which has already been hailed as one of the best indoor sports facilities in the world.

The construction project was completed on time and on budget, with funding from Glasgow City Council (£98million) and sportscotland (£15million). The pupils showcased some of the many sports that will be played at the Emirates Arena over the coming months and years including athletics, badminton, basketball, football, netball and track cycling. There were also demonstrations in disability sport, while Scotland’s only professional basketball team, the Glasgow Rocks, took part in an open training session ahead of their first home match at their new home against Newcastle Eagles.

After unveiling a plaque to officially open the arena Councillor Matheson led the Minister for the Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison MSP, and a host of dignitaries, on a tour of the new venue.

The delegation met pupils from Sacred Heart and Dalmarnock primary schools, who were the first to use the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Scotland’s only indoor velodrome.

Pupils from the school were present when construction work stared on the Emirates Arena back in January 2010 ( when a Time Capsule containing a copy of the Re-Gen was buried on site - to be opened in years to come).

Built on a 10.5 hectare site next the Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village and Celtic Park, the Emirates Arena is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe and is already home to a world-class sporting events programme.

The venue, which will be called the Commonwealth Arena during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, will host the badminton and track cycling events at the Games.

Facilities at the venue include the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, an indoor sports arena, three full-size sports halls with 12 badminton courts, four outdoor 5-a-side football pitches, an outdoor 1km outdoor cycle circuit, one of the largest Glasgow Club health and fitness centres in the city and a luxury spa.

Councillor Matheson said: “This marks the dawn of a new era for Scottish sport as we officially open the Emirates Arena.

It is a truly world-class venue that will be the new home of indoor sport in Scotland.

“The arena was built for the people of Glasgow so it is fitting that the very first people to use it today were school children from across the city. By investing in new facilities such as this we will help inspire a generation to become more involved in sport.

Participation in sport is increasing in the city and we want to see that continue in the lead up to, and beyond, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The world-class events programme that will be hosted

here, not least the Glasgow

2014 Commonwealth Games, will help us achieve this.

“I can’t wait to see the arena filled with local people and elite athletes alike over the coming months and years.”

Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison, said: “It’s amazing to see the Emirates Arena open its doors as a showpiece venue for the Commonwealth Games, funded by the Scottish Government and other partners.

“As we race towards 2014, another facility is rising out of the Glasgow skyline showing what a fitting host city it will be. Not only is the arena an excellent venue for the 2014 Games, it is also a world-class venue for Glasgow, creating for legacy for the west of Scotland for years to come.”

Emirates’ Sales Manager for Scotland and North East England, Denise Holmes, said: “This facility is unlike any I have ever seen. The thought that has gone into the design and execution makes it one of the best equipped and high-tech venues of its type worldwide.

“The Emirates Arena has been built, not only for

professional sportspeople but also local residents and it is my hope that the opportunities offered through access to such a state-of-the-art facility will inspire a generation.

“The Emirates Arena is a flagship venue and we are honoured to be able have such a close association with it and the people of Glasgow.” The jewel in the crown of the £113million Emirates Arena is the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.

The 250-metre cycle track was designed by Ralf Schuermann, who is regarded as one of the world’s top velodrome designers.

The Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome has a permanent capacity for 2,000 seated and 500 standing spectators, which can be increased to 3,700 seats during major events. The arena has a flexible capacity of up to 6,500 spectators and can host a range of sports including athletics, badminton, boxing,

gymnastics, judo and netball. The state-of-the-art sports

hall has three full-size sports courts (volleyball, 5-a-side football, netball, basketball etc) or 12 badminton courts. It can also be configured to have one show court, with a seating capacity for 1,200 spectators.

As well as being a competition and training venue for elite athletes, the state-of-the-art Emirates Arena is open for community use in a move that will help inspire the next generation of athletes and sports stars.

In its first four months of operation (5 October 2012 to 2 February 2013) the Emirates Arena will play host to no fewer than eight Scottish, European or World level sporting events. Further information on the events coming to the Emirates Arena, including full ticket details, can be found at www.emiratesarena.co.uk

National food waste campaignA new national campaign encouraging people across Scotland to help combat the environmental and financial impact of food waste was launched this week.

One-fifth of the food and drink we buy ends up being thrown away. This is the equivalent of an average Scottish household having another mouth to feed and avoidable food waste costs the average Scottish household £430 a year.

Two-thirds of the food and drink we waste could be used. This campaign gives simple steps to reduce food waste and save money these include:

• checkingcupboardsandwriting a list before shopping

• planningmealsinadvance

• sensibleportionplanning• checkingdatelabelling

and storage information• usinguporfreezing

leftoversandfreezingEvery year, avoidable food

waste costs the Scottish public £1 billion and creates harmful greenhouse gases. Reducing this waste could help cut carbon emissions equal to taking one car in five off Scotland’s roads.

Launching the food waste campaign, Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said:

“We all waste food but by making a few simple changes to the way we plan our meals, to our weekly food shopping, to using up leftovers and to better storage, we can help our pockets and the environment too. If we stopped avoidable food waste we’d save around £35 per household per month.

“The new food waste reduction campaign aims to benefit everyone by providing practical help and advice, it seeks to empower everyone to shop smarter, waste less, save more and help create a greener, cleaner Scotland now and for the future.”

The Scottish Government has committed to ambitious climate change targets of a 42 per cent reduction in CO2 by 2020 and an 80 per cent reduction by 2050. This includes a ban on food waste, from landfill by the end of 2020, which will help reduce emissions.

Reducing food waste is seven times better for the environment than any recycling option, but

sometimes it can’t be avoided and food recycling services are now being rolled out in towns and cities across Scotland. Recycling our food waste can generate renewable energy and be turned into a fertiliser to benefit Scottish farmers.

Councillor Stephen Hagan, COSLA Spokesperson for Development, Economy and Sustainability said:

“COSLA is pleased to support the food waste prevention campaign. COSLA welcomes this campaign and the focus on prevention in the first instance as this has the dual advantage of being good for the environment and for

household budgets.“Councils have

demonstrated great progress towardsachievingthezerowaste vision we share with the Scottish government, and local authorities are rolling out food waste collection services across Scotland to help communities to recycle unavoidable food waste.

“Good progress has been made but reducing council budgets will come under more pressure to continue this direction of travel. Small steps by individuals to tackle food waste will make continuing this progress an easier task in hard times.”

Preparing your car for winter

Antifreeze- During the winter you use more windscreen wiper fluid so make sure that you have anti-freezeorwindscreenwasherfluidanti-freezemix,inyourcar’s water bottle. You don’t want to find yourself stuck behind a lorry trying to clean your windows only to find yourwasherliquidhasfrozen

Survival kit- Stow a winter driving Survival Kit in your boot. Include a torch, ice scraper, windscreen de-icer, starter cables, a folding shovel and some non-perishable food, a blanket and a tow rope.

Tyres- Checking the condition of your tyres is important throughout the year but when there’s snow and ice on the road it’s vital. When checking your tyres

first make sure that the tyre treads are the correct depth – ideally more than 3mm for winter. Secondly make sure that the tyres are inflated correctly, as the cold weather can lower tyre pressure. Don’t be tempted to let some air out to get more grip as this doesn’t work, and can seriously reduce stability.

Electrics- Car batteries can be past their best after 5 years, so if your battery is older than this get it checked by your local garage.

Petrol- Keep your fuel tank topped up in the winter as you never know when you’re going to need thatextrafuel.Ifyouaredriving and become snowed in, conserve your fuel. Run your engine every twenty minutes to warm the car.

Ten tips for a warm houseThe cold and dark months of winter are the time when we spend more time indoors and turn up our heating. It’s also the time when our energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions go sky high.

We all need to keep warm, but we can do it in a greener, cleaner way. Here are our top ten tips for staying warm over winter.

1. Use heavy curtains to stop heat escaping from your windows

Up to 40 per cent of the heat escaping from your home in winter is from uncovered windows. Heavy, lined curtains whichextendbelowthewindowframe will insulate your windows and help keep the warmth in.

2. Install insulation in your house (or top up old and thinning insulation)

A well insulated house can use as much as 45% less energy for heating and cooling, which means that insulation

pays for itself in cheaper bills. With energy prices set to rise, installing insulation now is a smartwayofavoidingexcessivebills in the future.

3. Seal up gaps and cracks that let the cold air in

In your average Victorian home, if you added up all the cracks and gaps, it would be the equivalent of having a 1 metre by 1.5 metre window open all the time. They can account for 15 – 25 percent of heat loss in your home. Seal up cracks and gaps using weather stripping around doors and windows, gap filler for cracks in the walls and even a simple door snake for the bottom of the door. You can buy all of these things at your local hardware store, for not much money.

4. Install pelmets on top of your windows

Theseareboxeswhichsit over your curtain rod and prevent cold air coming in to your room. If you don’t have

them, a cheap alternative is to stick a draught snake, heavy blanket or towel on top of your curtain rod.

5. Watch the temperatureHeat the rooms you are

using to around 20ºC in winter, a comfortable temperature for most people. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat on your heater, place a thermometer in your living area to keep an eye on the temperature. And think of putting on a jumper before you try turning up the heat.

6. Close off any rooms that are not in use

Furniture can’t feel the cold so why waste energy heating areas that you’re not using. And don’t leave your heater or cooling system running all night or while you’re out. Turn it off or install a timer.

7. Let the sunshine in during the day

If you have any north facing windows, open up their curtains

when it is sunny to let the sun heat up your house for you.

8. Insulate hot water pipesWrapexternalhotwaterpipes

with simple lagging (insulating tape) to reduce the heat loss from your hot water tank to the taps, and reduce the energy needed to get your hot water. It can be bought cheaply from your local hardware shop.

9. If you can’t heat the room, heat yourself

If you can’t insulate your room or block draughts, it will be hard to heat the whole room, especially with a small electric heater. In this case you are better off sitting near the heater, so it at least keeps you warm.

10. Maintain your heatersGetting your heater serviced

professionally at least every two years will keep it running more efficiently. Keeping heaters free of dust and cleaning any filters regularly will also help. Or if you’re in the market for a new one.

Your personal driving habits have a big impact on fuel consumption and costs, especially in the winter. Here are five steps you can take to keep your fuel costs down and help the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions:

Use a block heater to warm your engine for two hours before you start it. Block heaters can improve overall winter fuel economy by as much as 10 percent.

Don’t idle your vehicle to warm it up - it’s better to drive it. Any more than 30 seconds of idling on winter days simply wastes fuel and increases emissions.

Check your tire pressure regularly, especially after there has been a sharp drop in temperature (more than 15°C). Cold temperatures decrease the air pressure in tires, which adds to the rolling resistance.

If you use a ski rack, it is a good idea to remove it when it is not needed. A ski rack (even an empty one) increases a vehicle’s aerodynamic drag, which in turn causes the engine to work harder and consume more fuel. The same applies to roof racks.

Use public transit whenever possible or try ride-sharing or carpooling. You’ll save money on fuel, reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and avoid the stress of driving in bad conditions.

MATCH ACTION REPORTS SPECIAL

Having taken their name from the Anderson McMillan Club in Tynecastle Street, the set-up was launched in the summer 0f 1978. Bobby Bell and Bob Anderson (first manager) were founder members, and after an early spell in Sunday football, the team enrolled for the SSMFL in 1978/79, when it was better known as the Civil Service League. Mr Anderson’s “putty wagon” - he was a glazier to trade - doubled up as the team bus! Ian Bell, brother of co-founder Bobby, and Billy McQueer have also been on the management side. The latter led Tynie to a Division 2 championship success in season 1995-96. Former goalkeeper-turned boss Joe Amato was in charge of their first-ever cup final appearance against East Kilbride-based Greenhills Dynamo, who won 5-2 at Provanmill Park in 2004. Despite almost folding a year later, Tynecastle’s fortunes changed in the summer of 2006 when goals from Michael Canon and David Critchley edged out Shawbridge in their

second Strathclyde Cup final appearance. It’s fair to say Tynecastle have built on that success. The Premier League title was secured in 2009, they were runners-up the following year, and took another championship in June, 2011. Incidentally, an unbeaten league run was recorded between October 2009 and March 2011. Just for good measure, despite watching Blochairn take the domestic silverware last term, Tynecastle regained possession of the Strathclyde Cup and beat the champions at Fullarton Park, Tollcross. WINTER CARPET BOWLS

SHETTLESTON bowler Ian Beattie has won all three major single competitions at Culrain Street this year, writes JACK HIGH. It is the first time any individual has won the Championship, Presidents and Co-Op Cup. This is without doubt a tremendous achievement. Ian has won the Championship 9 times (the first being in 1984), the Co-Op Cup 8 times (first in 1981), and lastly the Presidents 10 times, dating back to his opening success in 1980. If that was not enough,Ian, a GBA Singles winner in 1989, has also lifted the Balloted Pairs with Peter Brady no fewer than 11 times, and their first final victory was away back in 1984. My thanks goes to Mr Ian Colligan for supplying the profile on Ian Beattie, and he has also confirmed Shettleston Bowling Club will have their Presentation Night at Culrain Street on Friday, November 16. ALEX MORRISON, another

CITY CROWNED PREMIER CHAMPIONSGLASGOW CITY F.C. have won a record-breaking sixth successive Scottish Women’s Premier League championship - with three games to spare. Less than a week after their disappointing last 32 exit from the UEFA Women’s Champions League against Fortuna Hjorring (Denmark), City clinched another title - that’s seven in eight seasons - with a 2-0 victory against Celtic. Former City player and now Club Manager Laura Montgomery said: “I think people believe it is easy, but it has if anything been harder to retain the title year after year. “Winning the domestic league and playing the Champions League is what drives these players on. “The only disappointment is failing to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League once again.” Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black admitted: “Over the two legs it has been our performance in the first half of the first leg (City lost 2-1 at Petershill Park) that has cost

us. However, the better team has gone out of the competition. “I think the girls have done their country proud. They are all still young and will benefit from this.” Glasgow City knew they had to defeat Fortuna by two clear goals at the Hjorring Stadium to go through, and Jane Ross produced their best first half effort with a 12th minute shot that hit the post. Emma Mitchell’s pace and trickery caused problems for the hosts all night, while Danish ‘keeper Maria Christensen denied the Scottish champions with a string of second half saves. Substitute Leanne Ross had one effort brilliantly turned aside and late on Emma Mitchell’s left foot shot produced another save low down from Christensen. City bounced back quickly from their European hangover,

and continued a remarkable four-year unbeaten league run with goals either side of the interval against Celtic at

Petershill Park. Rachel Corsie headed home the opening goal from a Leanne Ross free kick awarded

after Lauren McMillan fouled Ruesha Littlejohn. Celtic goalkeeper Fay was in great form throughout, but

could not prevent substitute Emma Mitchell drilling home a low left foot shot in 85 minutes.
