GLASGOW football legends Billy McNeill and Walter Smith have joined forces to give ringing endorsements to Scottish Labour, saying that the team are the best qualified to lead the city. The pair met up with Gordon Matheson in Glasgow to urge people to vote Labour 1, 2, 3 in this week’s local elections. Billy McNeill, voted Celtic’s best ever captain by fans in 2002 and now official Club Ambassador, said: “Gordon Matheson’s drive and determination are clear to see, and his passion for Glasgow impresses me. He and his team are committed to improving the city, and are the ones I trust to represent the people of the city in the way they deserve. There is no doubt Gordon Matheson is the right leader for Glasgow. I’m proud to say Labour is my team.” Walter Smith, former Scotland and Rangers manager who led the Glasgow team to win 21 major honours said: “Gordon leads his team by example. His vision for the city is matched by a solid track record in Glasgow. While some candidates have their eye on other things, Gordon comes across as a man completely focused, with his eye on the ball. I’m happy to support him and the Glasgow Labour candidates.” Labour Leader of Glasgow City Council Gordon Matheson said: “I am thrilled to win the backing of Billy and Walter. They are Glasgow legends so this is a real boost. The election on Thursday is about choosing the best team for Glasgow. The changes we have seen in our city - new schools, new jobs, and great strides on tackling unemployment - didn’t happen by chance. They happened because of Labour’s vision for Glasgow. “The SNP say this is a stepping-stone to their referendum, but I don’t agree. The local elections are about local issues - about choosing the best team to put Glasgow first.” Last week,Sir Alex Ferguson also backed Gordon Matheson, saying: “I know a strong team when I see one, and Gordon Matheson’s got my support. I’ve been a Labour supporter all my life and the country is a better place for what they’ve done. I always tell young players that being a footballer is a tough job. But it’s not nearly as tough as managing a family household on a tight budget or bringing up a family when everyone is worried about jobs. I ’ve always said it is ordinary people, working hard for their families, that Labour stands for. Sometimes you know when a player’s mind is on something else and it’s affecting their performance on the pitch. It’s the same in politics. I hear a lot of people say the nationalists are putting the referendum first. Labour will put you first.” The Paper That Money Can’t Buy! John Wheatley Learners Sold on a New CareerA group of school-age students at John Wheatley College have completed their Retail Skills programme, which included a workplace experience at John Lewis Glasgow. The learners, from several Glasgow schools (Smithycroft, All Saints, Jordanhill, Springburn and St Mungo’s) spent one day a week out of their studies at John Wheatley College in East Glasgow to develop a wide range of personal development and vocational skills essential to a career in retail. Run in partnership with Glasgow City Council Education Services Department, local schools, John Lewis Glasgow and the College, the programme provides Skills for Work in Retailing at Intermediate 2 level. This explores interview-ing, presentation, customer

care, problem solving, working in teams, event planning, stock handling and many more es-sential skills. As part of the programme, the learners also undertook a five-day work placement, where ex-perienced members of the retail team guided the young learners through an induction programme which included Health & Safety training, stock control, customer care and complaint handling skills, as well as providing them with shop floor training in differ-ent departments. The students thoroughly en-joyed the programme, which has provided valuable preparation for their future, and several are already planning their career path around this employment sector. Kim Lowe managing director at John Lewis Glasgow said “Our

work with local schools and col-leges is essential to our ongoing commitment to the community. Our Partners aim to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace, offering their time and retail experience to local students.” College Principal, Alan Sherry, said, “John Wheatley College is delighted that the partnership is working so well and that the College has been able to provide a positive and realistic learn-ing experience for these young students. Establishing links with employers is key to ensuring that learners emerge from College with realistic goals and expecta-tions.” The students are pictured here with their coaches and Margaret Reid, their lecturer at John Wheat-ley College.

THE Curriculum for excellence in Scottish Education states the importance of young people having a good understanding of money, and the importance of saving wisely. In response to this, and in partnership with Bailli-eston Credit Union, Mount Vernon Primary School has established a school based credit union for all its staff and pupils. Two weeks ago, the school officially launched the Credit Union and opened a collection point in the school hall. The collection point will be man-aged by two teams of Pri-

mary 6 pupils, staff members and associates from Bail-

lieston Credit Union. Lindsay Harrison, Head Teacher, cut the ribbon to officially open the service and Primary 1 pupil Dorothy Gay was the first to make a deposit at the collection station. The credit union looks set to be incred-ibly popular and already they have received a large number of membership applications from both pupils and staff. The school will also be holding a ‘Financial Fortnight’ in May where pupils will have the opportunity to work alongside different organisa-tions and take part in a host of activities to encourage and enhance their knowledge of money and financial educa-tion.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

JOHN Wheatley College’s Easter-house Campus is set to undergo extensive remedial works to various sections of the building and will close temporarily over the summer period. This planned capital invest-ment of almost £300k will help the College to effect remedial works to the roof, restructure the ‘Independent Living’ learn-ing space, fully replace the lift and refresh much of the décor in the building. Although the College’s facilities are already fully compliant with Disability Legislation, it is felt that these improvements will anticipate any advance changes and keep the College ‘ahead of the game’ when it comes to pro-viding resources for its learners. Alan Sherry, Principal, said “We’ve scheduled the works to take place when the building will be at its quietest over the sum-mer period. The works are, as far as we are concerned, essen-tial to ensure that our communi-ties continue to have access to a quality learning environment which is designed around their needs. “We’re sure people will under-stand and welcome the changes once completed.” Classes will end on 31st May 2012 and the works are expect-ed to take around eight to ten weeks. Staff and services will be based at the College’s East End Campus building (2 Haghill Road) and all applicant interviews will be held there throughout that time.

However, both the Hullabaloo Childcare Centre and the Flex-ible Learning Centre will re-main open although access will be through The Library at The Bridge. The Easterhouse Campus building is expected to re-open

week commencing 13th August 2012 and will be fully prepared to welcome students at the start of the new session. The College apologises for any inconvenience caused through-out this time due to these nec-essary works.

Hi everyone. I was having a laugh with a few of the other Mums about how fussy kids are these days, and how in our day it was, “There’s your dinner…eat it.” and asking what was for dinner and no matter what it was you ate it or as in my family, you swapped the bits you didn’t care for round the table. There’s too much choice these days, people have more money and less sense. We all have different strategies for encouraging our kids to eat a healthy varied diet. A few were impressed by my sneaky ways of getting my little tykes to eat his fruit and veg. So here a few ideas to ensure your wee ones are getting enough fresh food and a balanced diet. I love frozen vegetables and just blitz them in the food processor or blender to disguise them . Grated carrots and turnip are great ways to add fibre. You can also just use any mashed up leftover vegetables.

Sneaky Vegetable BologneseBeef mince1 garlic cloves crushedTinned tomatoes1 onion chopped finely1 carrot grated Mashed cooked broccoli

Brown the mince and add the garlic and carrot. Fry off for a few minutes add the onion and tinned tomatoes. Simmer gently for 30-40 min before adding the mashed broccoli. Serve as you would on a bed of cooked spaghetti or make into a lasagne or cook in a pasta bake sprinkled with cheese.

Veggie Cheesy BurgersBeef mince1 grated carrot1 grated onion1 clove of garlic crushed1 small can of haricot beans drained and mashed1 handful of grated parmesan cheese

Combine all the ingredients and mash together well. Form into equal sized balls and flat-ten into burger shapes. Chill in the fridge for ½ hour before shallow frying. Try not to press down on them as they cook to retain al the flavoursome juices. Ensure burgers are cooked through and serve in a bun with let-tuce and tomato or as I sometimes do, with mashed potatoes, fried onions and peas.

Healthy chocolate Cake1 chocolate cake mix…(Betty Crocker)1 large carrot grated finely1 cooked beetroot grated or a finely grated apple with the peel left on.1 tub of low fat cream cheese2 tsp icing sugar1 ripe passion fruit.

Mix as on the package but stir in the grated vegetables before pouring into your cake tin and baking. The carrot and beetroot add depth of flavour and ensure a lovely moist sponge. Beat the icing sugar and cream cheese until smooth. Add the juice and pulp of the passion fruit and use as the filling for your cake. Dust the cake with a little icing sugar. Delicious.

Have a great week-end folks!!

Love Susie x

Dalmarnock Youngster David Stewart was a proud young man recently when he was named “Young Scot – Community Champion of the Year” at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow. David is not your typical young man who grew up interested in politics instead he was one of these youngsters who during his formative years got involved in all sorts and could have ended up going in the wrong direction. Three years ago David went to his local community centre in Dalmarnock as a volunteer and ended up as a Peer Mentor giving advice to other youngsters. Becoming more and more involved in the centre David soon began to work towards getting better deals for the youth in the area and was soon elected to stand as a Member of the Young Scottish Parliament. He has worked on many campaigns to help the youth not only in his own area but throughout Scotland. When Dalmarnock was being revamped for the 2012 Commonwealth Games all the shops in the area were closed

down and David took it upon himself to open a Community shop in the Dalmarnock centre making it easier for local people to obtain provisions, he even acquired cash point and pay point machines to help the community. From being someone who was treading the wrong path to a pillar of the community only took a short time and it was fantastic that this was recognised at the awards ceremony. David was recently made a Director on the Dalmarnock Trust as a voice for the young people and he

has completed a course in John Wheatley College and now hopes to attend university to gain a degree. Continuing to work alongside his community David is delighted that many of his fellow youngsters are now getting the chance with jobs in the National Indoor Sports Arena and the building of the Commonwealth Village homes. Apart from getting his life together as far as his direction was going David is now assisting his peers as he strives to deliver a legacy for an area of which he is proud of.

CLYDE Gateway is looking for the help of Eastenders, past and present, as it gears up to the re-opening of the former Olympia Building later this year. The Olympia, which was originally built and opened in 1911 and served as a theatre, cinema, bingo hall and furniture warehouse before closing down in 1993, has been undergoing a 18-month multi-million pound refurbishment after it was bought by Clyde Gateway in 2009. The building will re-open its doors in Autumn 2012 and brought back into use as a public library and café, a high performance centre for the National Governing Body for Amateur Boxing and two floors of commercial office space. As part of the plans to commemorate the opening, Clyde Gateway, in conjunction

with the project funding partners, will be mounting a range of special events and exhibitions. Simon Biggam, the Arts and Heritage Co-ordinator for the Olympia is keen for local residents, including those who moved away from the area some time ago but have fond memories of the Olympia, to come on board and help make the opening events extra special. He said, “The whole idea of the Olympia being brought back into use after two decades of being rundown and neglected came from local residents. But it is a project which has captured the wider public imagination as can be seen from so many groups and organisations providing funding support. “The Olympia is going to be a huge symbol of the continued progress and improvements

associated with regeneration and the 2014 Commonwealth Games. We want to not just give the building back to the community but also have a range of celebratory events and exhibitions looking at the history and heritage of the Olympia as well as that of the people who live in Bridgeton and Dalmarnock. “I know from talking to many local residents that there is a very strong affinity with the Olympia, particularly from the 50-year period when it operated as one of the main cinemas in the East End of the city. I want to hear all the stories and memories connected with this fabulous old building and to learn from those people who enjoyed the building in the years gone past the sort of events they would want to see take place in the run-up to the official

re-opening. “I also hope that if they have any artefacts such as old cinema tickets, posters, programmes or bingo cards that they would be prepared to lend them to us so that we can put them on display, particularly to remind younger residents just how important the Olympia was in the history and development of the area.” Clyde Gateway’s purchase of the building in September 2009 was the first time the Olympia had been in public ownership. It allowed the regeneration company to press

ahead with plans to save the historical landmark and secure a sustainable long-term use with the assistance and support of Glasgow Life, Sportscotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund among others. Following a period of local consultation, the proposal to emerge with most support was for the library/café on the ground floor, the centre of excellence for Amateur Boxing Scotland on the first floor with the top two floors being turned into offices. Simon Biggam believes that the re-opening later this year will be of enormous interest

to people from all across the country. He said, “It is not every day that you are able to bring a listed building with such a great history back into use and all of the partners are determined to make the occasion really exciting. We could, if people think it is a good idea, look at the history and significance of cinema, theatre and sport and so provide a link with the past and future uses of the Olympia. So please, if you have memories of this great old building please get in touch and share your stories.”

Caledonia Primary School was certainly the place to be this week as Strathclyde Po-lice from Shettleston called on their community team to show the children an insight into some of the operational duties they carry out on a day-to-day basis. Anyone passing the school would have thought there was an emergency in place as the playground was taken up with vehicles including Motorbikes, Dog Branch vans, Emergency Response

vehicles and Fire Engines, but thankfully everything was completely under control thanks to Sgt Frank Hamill and the troops. In what seemed like organised chaos the pupils were taken round in classes to take cycling pro-ficiency tests, meet and greet the Mounted Branch horses and shown just what to do if confronted with a chip pan blaze in the house. They also met the Dog Branch although thankfully the police dogs were safely behind grills

(You just don’t pet these-Do You?). One classroom was kitted out to resemble a break-in and the children took part in a Scene of Crime enquiry as they followed the clues and got their Fingerprints taken before eventually solving the crime. British Transport Po-lice were on hand to highlight the dangers of playing near the Railway Tracks (good thinking as the railway runs near the school on Caledonia Road)) and there was also a well trained dog which sniffs out explosives with them. In the main hall Urban Fox had set up two football skills nets

(and your’s truly scored a perfect goal). A new aspect to the com-munity fun day the police take around the schools in the East End was the introduction of examples of what goes on at the Glasgow Science Park and members of the facility brought along many inter-esting games for the kids to test out and measure their skills. All in all the children at Caledonia Primary had a fantastic day and thanks must go once again to Sgt Hamill and his team for organising it all.

Glasgow’s leading independent funeral directors Anderson Maguire have just opened another funeral home in the East End. Located at 658 Alexandra Parade, close to the Royal Infirmary. the new facility bridges the gap between the firm’s funeral homes in Springburn Way and Shettleston Road. “We have a large number of families in the Garngad, Townhead and Riddrie areas who use the company when they have a bereavement and this will be more convenient for them” said Angela Maguire, part of the management team at Anderson Maguire’s head office. ”More families than ever are now using our company. They recognise that we offer to very high level of personal service at a very moderate cost, something which is very important to families especially in the current economic climate” said Angela

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

YOUNG Garrowhill lass Hannah Martin made a resolution at the New Year and to date she is still adhering to it with vigour as last Friday night testifies. Hannah vowed to raise money for, as she put it, “ The children in countries around the world, who don’t have the things that my friends and I have.” The diminutive lass from Whirlow Road set about firstly by saving her pocket-money and any change (that her mum had spare!!), and from then she began to plan an evening which would involve her, family, friends and neighbours to raise cash for SCIAF. She obtained the hall at St Bridgets in Baillieston and once she knew she had a venue she began organis-ing the whole night. As the musical entertainment she was able to get the “Celine Dono-ghue Ceilidh Band” and they certainly kept the party going. Hannah spent ages contacting various people in an effort to obtain Raffle Prizes and apart from Gerry McGinn of GMG Roofing in Swinton Road, who deserves a special mention for his generosity, she also got an array of prizes from , Liz Cam-eron, Margaret Curran MP, John Mason MSP, local councillor Jim Coleman, Forty Design, Hol-lywood Bowl and DW Fitness among others. St Bridget’s

Church donated a Kindle and there was also a game of “Irish Bingo” which helped to put more cash in the coffers. What makes this event so pleasing was that a young ten year-old girl took it upon herself, with no prompting from others, to come up with such a great idea and carry it through to fruition. We’re delighted to fea-ture you Hannah in the Re-Gen and on behalf of everyone, congratu-late you on being such a diamond in the community.

We are sure that the money you have raised will be put to a good use.

The most important local elections for years are almost upon us.

This Thursday 3rd May is polling day and here in Glasgow we are looking to elect councillors who will run the city not only to the best of their abilities but also to run the city the way those who elected them require our great city to be run.

Here we introduce you to some of the Labour Candidates for the East End and Greater Easterhouse area and there are a few new faces alongside some experienced councillors a mix that the Labour party entrust will do their best for every one of us in the area.

In Bridgeton there are George Redmond and Yvonne Kucuk.

George Remond is a councillor whose record in Glasgow City Council speaks for itself.

George is a born and bred Eastender who has been an elected member for the Calton ward since 1999.

Previously he was a community worker and with his ambition for the city he soon made his voice heard.

He has been heavily involved in the regeneration of the Bridgeton /Dalmarnock / Calton and Parkhead areas through his role as Planning Convenor and only last year he successfully fought against the Scottish Enterprise when they proposed scything the budget for the area.

George also is the manager of the successful Bridgeton, Calton, Dalmarnock, Credit Union and is very well known not only in his own constituency but throughout

his native city. George’s experience at this

time is certainly well valued as far as getting Glasgow back on track and as a strong believer in partnership working to achieve the vision to be a great city for citizens, visitors and businesses he is just what Glasgow needs in an elected member.

Running alongside George Redmond is, Yvonne Kucuk another Eastender through and through.

Yvonne certainly takes international relations to a new height having married a Turkish national and brought him to live in Bridgeton.

Previously, Yvonne worked in the Post office at Bridgeton and she is well known in the area but being a people person, Yvonne began questioning authority on behalf of her fellow residents and soon became a thorn in the side of those who could and should have been making a difference in the area.

As manager of the Dalmarnock Centre Yvonne is looked on by many of those using the place as an adopted “Mammy” and confidante as she pursues her dream of getting every young person in the area a job and to date she has been very successful in gaining places for the youngsters in the new national Indoor Sports Arena which sits in Springfield Road just up from the Centre.

Yvonne is a true Labourite who hates to see any injustice shown to anyone and fights with all her being to rectify any she does see.

She wants to see real and

lasting community benefits delivered as the regeneration goes on for the Games.

The things utmost in Yvonne’s quest are to see families lifted out of poverty, The Glasgow Living Wage go up and to ensure that local people get the chance to take up jobs generated from the Commonwealth Games.

In Calton, Yvonne has worked alongside the Calton Area Association and she sourced funds and was successful in getting an IT suite.

In Bridgeton, she worked alongside other volunteers in the FAB Group and they secured funding to build the play-park in Dale Street, furthermore the group fought for a new community centre and it was one of Yvonne’s proudest moments in 2006 when the Bridgeton Community Learning Centre opened its doors for the first time.

Camlachie, Dennistoun (South), Parkhead, Shettleston, Tollcross and of course Dalmarnock each have a part as far as input to

strengthening the communities via Yvonne is concerned and when you think of what she has achieved outside the council it really is exciting to see just what she will achieve if she is elected.

Yes The Calton Ward certainly has two outstanding candidates in George Redmond and Yvonne Kucuk fighting for you on behalf of Scottish Labour.

Now it is up to you to make the right choice and keep up the momentum that they have brought on your behalf.

Labour’s action plan for our part of Glasgow:

ScottishLabour

East Centre WardThe three Scottish Labour

Candidates in this ward are Frank Docherty, Elaine McDougall and new boy Russell Robertson.

Frank Docherty was elected in 2003 and has served the city well in various roles of office throughout his time as a councillor.

Frank lives in the Dennistoun area with his family and is very approachable in his role as the local councillor. Well known as a straight talking man Frank will always take up the challenge when he sees injustice being done to any of his constituents and he has even gone against his fellow councillors at times when he felt the need.

Frank stood up against the Education Minister recently at a meeting in Easterhouse, when the fight against college cuts threatened the fantastic John Wheatley College’s very existence.

Frank made a passionate speech about the need to make the college a special case as the results the college has had over the years prove.

Between fighting for the college and also opposing the closure of Lightburn Hospital amongst other campaigns, Frank has consistently proved that he has his constituents at heart in everything he does. ]

His priorities for East Centre ward are an everyday improvement of the local environment, greater involvement in re-cycling and less carbon emissions.

More jobs and greater opportunities for further education and as such he fully supports the “Glasgow Guarantee” which ensures that young people have the chance to get a job, training for apprenticeships. Elaine McDougall is also a serving councillor living in her constituency in Dennistoun and is very active in her role.

Still working as a part-time carer, Elaine knows just how the need for care of the elderly and vulnerable people is utmost in both her constituents and the council’s agenda and she is constantly fighting to ensure they get the support that they deserve.

Elaine works very closely with Milnbank Housing Association to protect and sustain the housing stock in her area.

Prior to entering politics Elaine was a community activist as she has always had a great interest in the area and has fought hard against absentee landlords especially as she feels

these people are not doing enough to ensure the well-being of the area.

She sees Glasgow as a city with severe social and economic problems due to the cuts imposed on it by both the Scottish and British Governments, but with the resolve and fight of the right team in office, it can bounce back to be the vibrant forward looking city we all know and love.

Russell Robertson is the new kid on the block although he is well-known in the East End, as he has worked for the NHS is various roles in both Shettleston and Baillieston Health Centres.

Being a runner-up in the “Community Champions Awards” Russell has previously shown his dedication for the area and that is why he is now throwing his hat into the ring.

He is proud to be a Glaswegian and he hates how the city is being used as a pawn in the “Independence” propaganda movement.

He takes the view, as all true Glaswegians do, that our city will not be used as a “Stepping Stone” but rather that anyone elected to Glasgow City Council will work for the people of Glasgow and not have another agenda. Russell’s priorities for the area are, tackling the disgusting habit of dog fouling, working to regenerate Duke Street by re- opening old shop fronts to new business developers and entrepreneurs thereby brightening up the street, creating new jobs and helping to tackle crime.

Let’s hope these three worthy candidates can be returned on Thursday 3rd of May – Remember “It’s Your Vote That Really Counts”.

ScottishLabourMarie Garrity, is standing as a candidate in the local elections for the first time because she feels the Baillieston constituents need a local person who is committed to the area, with a voice in the City Chambers, who will stand up for them.

Marie is an NHS health visitor, who also works

within Archway Glasgow as a support nurse for victims of sexual assault. She was previously a childrens nurse and a midwife.

Her background is in health and she maintains every aspect of daily life affects our health, such as, unemployment, poor housing, crime, drug abuse, low income, disability, domestic violence. She has spent the whole of her working life helping others and wants to bring her experience to serve the people of Glasgow. When asked, What makes you proudest about Glasgow, her reply was, “ Just being a Glaswegian makes me proud. From our famous shipbuilding history to our architecture of today, the people, the beauty and vibrancy of the city, our specialised hospitals, universities, schools, gallerieås and museums: what ís there not to be proud of.”

Marie lives in Broomhouse and sees the need for improved facilities in the area such as, a Leisure Centre for all the family, through to even, a small shop selling daily essentials which could make life easier for the local community, plus a better bus link to nearby Baillieston.

Marie works as previously mentioned with “Archway” where she assists the Police with Rape and Sexual Assault Victims and she is proud of the fact that this unique service is one that is based in Glasgow and covers the whole Strathclyde area.

Previously she worked for 10 years at Base 75, providing a medical service to those women who were caught up in the street trade. Marie wants to see the unemployment rates going down and health statistics change for the better and she would like to see more opportunities for the young, especially with increased apprenticeships being made available.

Marie can certainly stand up for herself and be vociferous as she is a vastly experienced member of Unison and has spoken out against injustice at meetings throughout the UK.

As a previous Chairperson of Broomhouse Community Council, Marie is the ideal choice to speak and act for constituents of the area and of the Baillieston ward as a whole.

Jim Coleman is another Eastender through and through and during his 23 years as a councillor Jim has certainly ruffled a few feathers along the way with his straight talking and direct approach to getting things done.

Such is the respect of his fellow councillors towards Jim that they elected him Deputy Leader of the Glasgow City Council Labour Party a few years back and prior to the council being dissolved due to the elections on Thursday, Jim was the Executive of Land and Environmental services.

Barlanark born and bred, Jim is certainly well known in his area and he is a person who has worked away tirelessly in the area and for the city as a whole on such things as being influential in getting the “Glasgow Fort” built in the Easterhouse area and ensuring that local people were given jobs as part of the overall deal, plus working very closely with all the Housing Associations to transform the face of the Baillieston /Easterhouse /Barlanark areas into a place to be proud of with modern housing and gardens. Jim is also heavily involved in the fight against Domestic Abuse and works closely with Glasgow Womens Aid.

One thing that may have made Jim unpopular with some was, his fight to get a Banning Order on Alcohol being consumed on the Streets of Glasgow. Although he was castigated at the time by many, we can all now see the great result it has had on communities as a whole throughout the city.

Jim recently spoke out about the state of our roads in Glasgow and the “Infamous” Potholes although he certainly surprised many people when he said that in Freezing the Council Tax it meant that services were being affected, but if Glasgow refused to freeze the council tax it was basically being “black-mailed” by the Scottish Government, whereby the City would lose around £7 Million.

Services managed by the City are being hit by the council tax freeze and as such are being prioritised to the best of the Council’s ability. Put that way it now makes sense to many.

Jim Coleman was also at the centre of a storm recently when he spoke out against the refusal to pass planning permission for new homes in the Baillieston Area as it would affect the construction of a brand new leisure centre and other such facilities in the area which he had been discussing with the house-builders as part of the local amenity agreement.

He is still hopeful that this decision can be overturned so that the Baillieston people can eventually get the new facilities that have by-passed them for years.

Jim wants to continue as a councillor to improve the quality of people’s lives within his local community. The council can do so much for local people and the economy in the city and it needs people with ideas and vision to take our city forward. He is

most proud of the regeneration that has happened in Glasgow, stating, “ It isn’t just the new buildings - it is the new jobs, opportunities and chances that brings.”

Jim’s pledge to his constituents is as follows, “If elected as your local councillor, I will make it my priority to tackle youth unemployment. I will also focus on working to improve housing in Glasgow and provide support for the elderly. I welcome the £100 payments for the over 80s to compensate for the Winter Fuel Allowance cut by the Tories.”

One thing for sure is Jim Coleman is a fighter for the people of his ward and beyond.

Frank McAveety, George Ryan and Anne Simpson are the three Scottish Labour candidates in the Shettleston Ward and each one has the credentials to do well in what looks like a tight election.

Taking Frank McAveety first, prior to becoming an MSP in Holyrood, he was a very hard-working councillor in the area and this was recognised by his fellow councillors who elected him leader of the council.

Now with that sort of endorsement comes a commitment to Glasgow as a whole and Frank certainly upheld his corner in his dealings with everyone from big business to the ordinary punter.

Having served Glasgow for over 23 years in one capacity or another Frank is certainly qualified to speak on behalf of the residents of the Shettleston Ward and anyone knowing him knows that he is very approachable. I

n this forthcoming election Frank sees the need to get Labour back working with the residents and as a people person he listens and then acts on their

behalf. At this time in our history we

need experienced politicians fighting for us and there is no more experienced candidate than Frank.

As Frank himself admits “I have made mistakes in my career” but can you honestly tell us anyone who hasn’t. Frank has learned from the mistakes and has come back a much more stronger individual.

His priorities for Shettleston are to invest in new schools (something that as a former teacher, is dear to his heart), and to create jobs especially for the young people, plus sort out the gap sites and buildings that make the area look unattractive.

He is a proud Glaswegian who believes that despite the adversity it faces as a city it continues to overcome challenges and believes that everybody should have a good chance in life.

Next we have George Ryan who as an elected member has campaigned against the cuts in the John Wheatley College budget and he spoke angrily about how the Scottish

Government by doing so, were basically condemning young and older potential students, looking to better themselves and prepare for work, to the scrap-heap.

George was also a leading light in the campaign of halting the closure of Lightburn Hospital as many of his constituents depended on the excellent work

done in the facility. Another experienced councillor,

George has the wherewithal to deal with and advise on the problems the city is facing at present.

George is a member of the Employment Tribunals Scotland and also a Chartered Health and Safety Officer and prior to that,

was a homeless persons officer.

He is an Eastender through and through and helps run a local football team (something he really enjoys doing). George believes that Glasgow needs to have elected representatives who are accessible and have the skills and abilities to give a voice to local communities.

Local Government makes a vital contribution to all our lives and he believes that Labour is the party best equipped to deliver stronger

communities. Anne Simpson is the third

candidate in the area and anyone knowing Anne will know just how dedicated she is to her community.

She is a former social work manager and a trained nurse but more recently she is well known as the Chair of Carmyle Community Centre.

Anne has been campaigning vigorously to save the local bus services and against a proposed mobile phone mast being erected in the area.

She is determined to forge a better future in the East End of the City.

Anne’s vision for her area is to improve and expand on the existing green spaces including the Clyde walkways plus to get a better train service as the Carmyle service is one of the first cancelled when staff are absent.

She wants the service to be more regular and resilient and to have a proper Sunday service meaning more access to the city for locals.

Each of these candidates have a lot to bring to the table in the local election so make sure their voice is heard by voting for them on Thursday.

Long gone are the delights of writing and receiving a letter, speaking to someone on the phone is following quickly as more and more people turn to FACEBOOK to communicate on a daily basis. Now this is all good and well if you can control it but recent surveys have discovered that more and more folk are becoming addicted to Facebook without them actually realising the fact. Let’s see

just how addicted you are to this social-networking site that has millions of followers throughout the world. When you get up in the morning (or get into your work), do you have a coffee and a quick glance at the newspaper or can’t you wait to see your Facebook page to see what new messages have been posted since you last logged out. To many people the messages read in the

morning can make or break their day e.g. If you have friends requests you think to yourself “I’m popular” and even better if you have a couple of messages, you feel needed. On meeting new people one of the first questions you ask them is, “ Are You on Facebook?” you then ask them to add you as a friend. Do you find that you are spending more and more time on Facebook and less and less on social activities? Some posts on Facebook are completely inane such as “ Having this or that for my lunch.... picking up my kid from nursery.... or even, just been to the toilet .” Every time you put up a

FACEBOOK post someone somewhere can read it and they can use this information to harm you in some way. Take for example Thieves. The way to make yourself an easy target for a thief is to share your location on Facebook. Something you thought was an innocent post like “Just checked into the local Gym/Restaurant/ Wherever, can let a thief know exactly when your house is empty and a prime target. Anything you do on Facebook can and may be used in a court of law, as it helps greatly in establishing a person’s character and where and when something took place. A flippant post about your workplace can alert your employer such as “I’m taking a Sickie today” and things like

this can be used against you in later disputes. Recently there have been high profile cases of people posting threats against prominent celebrities and even bullying on Facebook and the courts are clamping down on such behaviour. Strathclyde Police have a dedicated Facebook monitoring section and they also act on information given to them from the public. Gang Fights have been arranged on Facebook and as we all know serious arguments can stem from posts made. Anyone who knows their way around Facebook knows that you can basically find out lots about anyone who is logged into this so just beware. All we can advise is that you monitor your

activity on social networking sites and be aware of the dangers which lurk within. Facebook is

an ideal vehicle to correspond on but don’t go too heavy into what you post.

The information below can help you to recycle more at home, more often, giving the products you buy another life. With kerbside recycling collections and local recycling centres on the doorstep, recycling is convenient and easy. And you might be surprised by just how much you can recycle these days. Benefits of recycling• Give the products you buy a second (or even third or fourth!) life by recycling• Ease and convenience – recycling points are all over Scotland, • Divert waste from landfill – and lessen pollution and greenhouse gas emis-sions to help create a cleaner, greener Scotland• Divert waste from landfill – and lessen pollution and greenhouse gas emis-sions to help create a cleaner, greener Scotland• Put valuable materials back into the manufacturing cycle• Energy savings can be made during the manufacturing process• Recycling supports jobs in collection, processing and future manufacturing Why recycle? The more waste that can be diverted from landfill, the better. Decaying, biodegradable landfill waste releases greenhouse gas emissions and can cause pollution to leach into the ground. Greenhouse gases contribute to climate change, by trapping more heat in our atmosphere. If we recycle as much as possible, however, less goes to landfill and precious materials can be used again to create new things instead of being used only once.Making products from recycled materi-als uses less energy than if raw materi-als are used. The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle alone could run a washing machine for 10 minutes (and recycling glass saves on the other things you need to make new glass like oil, ash, sand and limestone too). It’s easy to recycle – you’ll find more than 3,000 recycling points across Scotland. We’re better at recycling than ever before – with more than 40% of Scotland’s household waste now being recycled – but we all have the opportu-nity to recycle more, more often. Recycling can turn:• Aerosol cans into watches• Steel food tins into cars and bridges• Old trainers into running tracks• Cardboard boxes into stationery• Your Yellow Pages into loft insulation• Carpet into washing up bowls• Juice cartons into plasterboard

Did You Know?• All newsprint (the paper used for newspapers) manufactured in the UK is now made from 100% recycled paper• Recycle your newspaper and it could hit the news-stand again in just one week• Batteries contain valuable materials that can be used again if you recycle them Did you know? Scotland’s households throw out around 570,000 tonnes of food and drink a year. More than half of this could be eaten.Did you know? If we reused twice as many sofas as we do now, together we could help to support another 1,200 jobs in the reuse and disposal industry.Did you know? Scotland only reuses 1 in 7 televisions. If we reused 2 in 7, it would reduce carbon emissions by 7,000 tonnes a year.Did you know? The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle alone could run a washing machine for 10 minutes.• http://www.greenerscotland.org

GHA’s award-winning Big Red Truck – an interactive, mobile exhibition which tells the story of Glasgow’s housing – is back on the road. The truck, which was launched last year, made its first appearance of 2012 at the Riverside Museum this week (April 16 and 17) before starting a tour of festivals, fun days and other community events over the next few months . The Big Red Truck tells the unique story of the role tenants have played in the transformation of their homes in the city over the past eight years. The exhibition features interactive games, displays and an all-action video wall. Tenants are filmed speaking about how their homes – and their lives – have improved as a result of GHA’s £1.2billion modernisation programme. And they talk about how tenants have been the driving force in helping change the face of city over the past 10 years. The videos also feature demoli-tions of some of the city’s multi-storey blocks and the new-build homes where many of the tenants

have moved to. GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said: “The Big Red Truck is a great way for people of all ages to learn more about how social housing in

Glasgow has been transformed. It’s the story of housing in Glasgow told through the eyes of the people who know it best – the tenants. And because it’s so interactive, it’s fun and educational too.” Last year, the Big Red Truck was a big hit with hundreds of people from all over the world who visited it. And it went on to scoop a number of awards including three catego-ries in the Herald Business Digital Awards and the Institute of Internal Communication’s Best Campaign. The truck is free to visit and everyone is welcome. Events it will visit include:• 26 May – Southside Festival – Queens Park Recreation Ground; • 3 June – West End Festival – Kelvin-grove Park; • 16 June – Pollokshaws Carnival – Greenbank Park. Anyone who is holding an event

or fun day and who would like to book the Big Red Truck, should call GHA marketing officer Paul Cowden on 0141 274 6608.

ON Saturday 21st April be-tween 8-00pm and 10-00pm at Helenslea Hall Methven Street Lilybank, the Porta-cabins that house the cycles for the Community Cycle Loan Scheme was broken into and 2 bikes were stolen. The bikes have been funded by a range of partners to allow local people to access bikes through recently introduced the loan scheme for the benefit of the local residents and the project is in its final stages of being developed and was due to be launched in the next few weeks. Local people are angry at the theft and would like the bikes to be returned as soon as possible. Knowing the mood

of the local residents, the Re-Gen would advise anyone who knows either where the bikes are at present, or who was involved in the theft to contact, either Michael McCourt at Helenslea Hall on 0141 556 1195 or to contact Strathclyde Police on 0141 532 4000. A Reward may be available for informa-tion that secures the return of the bikes.

THE Re-Gen visited Broom-house Community Centre recently to meet the newest Scout Troop in Scotland and give them a boost by featuring them in the paper. Group Scout Leader Bill McDonagh welcomed the new intake of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to the venue which will be home to the 5th Clyde (Broomhouse) Scout Group. For anyone interested in joining the Scouting movement in

Broomhouse the meeting times are, Friday Nights, Beavers - 6-00pm till 7-00pm. Scouts – 7-00pm till 9-30pm and the Cubs times will be confirmed shortly. As kids nowadays are constantly being criticised for spending more and more time in front of computers this is an ideal opportunity to get them involved in something really worthwhile. Why not take a trip along this Friday to get more information.

McWilliam broadcast a lookout request and a description of the males involved. A short time later, the Police Constables Mc-Crimmon and Tonner observed one of the suspects in nearby Morningside street. He was detained and conveyed to London Road police office. The Police Officers McGrory and Bell observed the second suspect on Carntyne Road and he was also detained and conveyed to London Road. After enquiries were carried out he driver of the vehicle was charged with Driving a stolen vehicle, Dangerous driv-ing, driving whilst disqualified, and driving with no insurance. Both males were held custody for court.

An Association of Chief Police Officers Road Safety Campaign will begin on the 8th of May until 11th of May where the focus will be on Seat Belts and inappropri-ate road user behaviour. This will involve High Visibility Patrols throughout the country with particular focus on prominent crash locations. High risk groups, like the males above, who steal vehicles and use them in other crimes will be targeted. Educa-tion and Enforcement will be the primary means of dealing with offences detected. We should all get behind the Police and this campaign as dangerous driving on the roads in our communities puts lives at risk.

Illegal Immigrants arrestedThe Pro active Unit from the East End of Glasgow and Local Community Policing teams carried out an operation as part of Operation Neptune, visit-ing all 25 fast food outlets in the Sub Division. This was supported by partners including UKBA and Scot-tish Power. As a result of this intelligence led opera-tion there was a total of 15 arrests made under the Immigration act.

A prolific offender from the Den-nistoun area has been sentenced to 8 months imprisonment for knife carrying. The 38 year old male has been caught twice within the space of a year with deadly kitchen knives in his pos-session, each time stating that was for his own protection. Thanks to the tough stance that the Scottish Government take on Knife crime, KNIFE-CARRYING criminals in Scotland are more likely to be jailed, and are given longer sentences, than those in the rest of the UK.Figures from the Scottish Government show that people caught with a knife in Scotland are 50 per cent more likely to receive a custodial sentence than those in England and Wales, while average sentences are almost 75 per cent longer.Justice Secretary Kenny Ma-cAskill said the statistics reflect the tough approach adopted by police, the courts and the Government. He said: “There is a culture of knife crime in parts of Scotland, which stretches back decades, and sadly, as we’ve seen from recent tragic events, commu-nities continue to suffer the heartache of loved ones lost or

injured as a result of knives.“We know that the key to tack-ling knife crime is a combination of tough enforcement on the streets backed by early interven-tion and education.“That is why on the streets, our police forces are taking a no-nonsense approach through carrying out a record number of stop and searches, and our pros-ecutors are cracking down hard on those who are caught carry-ing and using knives through a strengthened prosecution policy announced by the Lord Advocate last year.“Our courts in Scotland are also responding, discharging the toughest knife sentencing regime in the UK.”Those jailed in Scotland in 2010-11 were given an average sentence of 288 days in prison, compared with 165 days in England and Wales.Government figures also show fewer recorded crimes for handling an offensive weapon in Scotland, down from a high of 10,110 in 2006-07 to 6283 in 2010-11.The local Community polic-ing Teams in B’ Division in the East End of Glasgow are having great success in taking knives

and weapons off the streets to make our local communities safer. They are making sure that they are in the right places, at the right times and targeting the violent individuals that are the biggest threat to the safety of our communities. This offender that has just been sentenced will be behind bars where he cant bring harm to the community. He will also be under no illusions about how serious Strathclyde Police and the courts are regarding knife crime. If you have any information on individuals that you believe may carry weapons then please con-tact your Local Community Police Officer or Crimestoppers on, on 0800 555 111. All information will be treated in confidence and can be given anonymously.

MOUNT VERNON Bowling Club hosted the Eastern Carpet Bowls League Presentation of Prizes, writes JACK HIGH. The night was a resounding success - with a full house - and everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Said Secretary Ian Colligan: “Mr Richard Cameron, President of Mount Vernon, gave us a warm welcome, and their ladies put on a lovely spread. “I also want to thank you personally for the excellent coverage you gave us in the Re-Gen. Keep up the good work you carry out for bowlers within the East End of Glasgow.” Meanwhile, Mr Alex Cumlin (Senior) has written to Mr Colligan and praised the latest winter campaign. He said: “The Boys from Whitevale BC would like to say a big thank you to all the clubs

in the Carpet Bowls League for a great year. “The Whitevale team found it an experience to play with the youngest and oldest players in the league. The boys, Grant Mattison and Sean Munro, both only 14 years of age, and 92 year-old Martin McEwan. This trio can and will fit into any team. The experience of Martin seems to rub off on the boys, and it shows when they play Carpet Bowls. “On behalf of Whitevale BC we would like to say a big thank-you.” A spate of break-ins has badly hit East End bowling clubs. Sandyhills suffered a second incident before Easter, while Baillieston and Garrowhill had

their premises raided on the Holiday Monday. Springboig also had intruders. Doors, windows and tills were damaged at most of these clubs. Alex Morrison (Garrowhill) attended the openings of Baillieston, Shettleston, Sandyhills and Foxley on behalf of the Lanarkshire Bowling Association. Good news from Shettleston and Foxley, who have seen an increase in membership (10 and 14) respectively. DIARY DATES from Shettleston. CITY CRUSH DONS’ LEAGUE CUP HOPESCHAMPIONS Glasgow City Ladies continued their SWPL League Cup campaign with a crushing quarter-final victory over Aberdeen at Toryglen Regional Football Centre. City defeated Dons 7-0 and set-up a last-four slot against Forfar Farmington at Keirs Park, Hill O’Beath. With Celtic - 3-1 winners against Rangers - meeting East of Scotland hosts Spartans as the Re-Gen went to press, there is an exciting prospect ahead for the first silverware of the women’s season. The cutting edge from last year’s Premier League and Scottish Cup winners was impressive. No fewer than 39 attempts on the Dons goal made for a one-sided cup tie. Jane Ross fired them ahead after only 6 minutes, and 15 minutes later Leanne Ross lashed home a 20 yarder.

Aberdeen were left with a mountain to climb when Jane Ross put City into a 3-0 interval lead. The same player was fouled for a second half penalty kick which Leanne Ross dispatched behind ‘keeper Lauren Sangster. In a 15 minute spell, both Jane and Leanne Ross completed hat-tricks, and Aberdeen conceded No 7 thanks to a composed finish from Ciara Barnes. Glasgow City central midfield Amy Bulloch has returned to former club Hamilton Accies. Bulloch has represented Scotland at various youth levels, and Accies are delighted to see her back in

their set-up. Forfar Farmington enjoyed a successful visit to Hamilton and emerged with a 2-1 cup victory. Nicola Davidson and Nicky Grant did the damage. Susan Fairlie replied for Accies. Sarah Ewens was Spartans’ two-goal hero against Inverness, who replied through Karen Mason. Chloe Craig, Emily Thomson and Suzanne Grant clinched Celtic’s Old Firm victory. Jennifer Condie scored the Rangers goal. Glasgow City recorded a confidence-boosting 5-1 league win against Hibernian at Petershill - and opened up the first three-point gap at the

top of the Premier table. Lisa Evans shot past ‘keeper Shannon Lynn from a Nicky Docherty header on 8 minutes. Hibs were back on level terms soon after. Striker Claire Emslie beat the homesters’ offside trap and ran clear to shoot under Lee Alexander. Evans doubled her goal tally when she raced onto a Christie Murray pass and beat the diving Lynn. Just on half-time, former Hibee Leanne Crichton made it 3-1. City resumed with a bang. Christie Murray netted a fourth, and with the homesters now dominating play Emma Mitchell fired a glorious 25 yarder past Lynn into the top corner.
