Starring young Paul Brannigan from Barrowfield, who plays “Robbie” in this “Must See” movie has taken to acting like a duck to water and the film is uncannily, a mirror image of his life up to a point and, given that Paul had never had a day’s acting experience in his life, he carried off his part like a seasoned professional actor. Paul has captured the hearts of the film going public with his piercing blue eyes and typical Glasgow humour along with his underlying serious streak which, if his debut film is anything to go by, will take him right to the top of what is a very competitive industry. Another Barrowfield star, Jasmine Riggins, was hilarious in her role as “Mo” and as the film unfolded the main characters made the watching audience feel they were in the film instead of just watching it, which is testimony to Ken Loach’s direction. It was like a “Who’s Who” in the Scottish entertainment calendar as many well know stars of Screen and Television made their way to watch the first showing of what promises to be the Smash-Hit Scottish Film of all time taking over from “Gregory’s Girl”. The story- line is very believable and the “Glesca Humour” radiates in almost every scene of the movie. At the end of the film, (which we are not revealing), there is a very poignant piece which brought tears to a few eyes, ( and we are Not referring to the appearance of the Re- Gen in this masterpiece). Paul’s supporting cast were immense and it makes us all proud that these youngsters have grasped with both hands the excellent chance that director Ken Loach has given them. Hopefully now that young Paul has got his foot on the first rung of the ladder, the Scottish Press will get behind him and forget the boy’s past and look towards the future and the making of what promises to be a glittering career in the acting business. NEW WOODLAND PARK PROPOSAL – SHARE YOUR VIEWS

Cuningar Loop is a large area of land, some 30 hectares in size, situated on a distinctive bend on the River Clyde. It is accessed from Downiebrae Road, Rutherglen and is directly opposite the site where the Athletes Village is being built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Project partners Clyde Gateway, South Lanarkshire Council and Forestry Commission Scotland, following a period of community engagement last year, are working together to bring forward a proposal to redevelop just under half of the land in Cuningar Loop as a new Woodland Park.

An application for Planning Permission for the Park is going to be submitted to the local councils and we would now like to discuss plans for the future of the site as a Woodland Park.

Current proposals for the new park include:-

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

McVITTIE’S in Tollcross are throwing their support behind a brand new football tournament as part of their involvement with Care in the Community. Stepford Road Football Complex, Edinburgh Road, will host ten East End primary schools next Saturday, ( June 9th). Over 100 children will be involved in small-sided games, and the organisers are hoping locals support what will be an annual event. David Allan, who has worked with the company for over 25 years, said: “We were approached to help support the idea. “The McVittie’s Cup format will involve three games taking place at the same time. We have purchased trophies, water bottles, and individual medals for the players. “The winners’ trophy will be engraved each year. Hopefully, by having the event publicised in the Re-Gen we can help generate even more interest on the day.” Teams are being asked to report to Stepford Road at 9am, and the first games commence 30 minutes later.

McVITTIE’S CUP BOOST

CUSTOMERS at the Duke bar in Duke Street Dennistoun turned out recently to witness the fruits of their labours being turned into something very worthwhile as they handed over a cheque to the Marie Curie campaign. Following a few events or-ganised by Manageress Mary Mortimer including a Cabaret Night and a Sponsored Walk the customers collected a grand total

of £1159-00 which was passed on to a representative of the Marie Curie Cancer appeal at a special Disco provided by one of the East End’s better known DJ’s “Big Peter”. This was a tremendous achievement by the Duke Bar’s punters and it is great that such a sum was handed over to help fight this terrible disease. Well done everyone involved.

Kathleen, Lyndsey and Arlene show off their wares at the college campus

YOUNG Lyndsey Heenan a pupil at John Wheatley College is on a mission this summer to help under-privileged in Marrakesh in Morocco. Lyndsey will be working with other volunteers within an organ-isation called “Original Volun-teers” and they will be trying to change the lives of many of the Orphans and Street kids in the country. Lyndsey from Easter-house is at present in her second year at John Wheatley College and she has to raise the cash to go to Morocco herself but thank-fully Arlene King and Kathleen De Stefano of the Students As-

sociation heard about the young girl’s plight and both have helped with raising some of the funds required by Kathleen making excellent Cards and Arlene or-ganising raffles etc... As young Lyndsey still needs a little more to help her make the trip she has called on the Re-Gen to put out an appeal for some of you kind hearted people out there to assist her. Anyone who feels they can help her reach her target should contact Lyndsey by Email on [email protected] and she’ll let you know how you can donate to this very worthwhile cause.

This June will be a dynamic, lively and interactive month. There’ll be new information, new people - all this with strong impact on the couple. There’ll be a lot of discussions and plans for joint projects, domestic planning and family-focused interest.

June 2012 will primarily be financial. There’ll be a lot of interest in business, in certain transactions, in purchasing, selling, calculating, efforts will be directed towards finding new methods of raising the income on the 11th Jupiter will enter your house of money, boosting the material appetite!

The big news, though, is that on June 11th 2012 Jupiter will enter Gemini. For a year ahead, it’ll open new horizons to you and create new opportunities. Jupiter is the Greater Benefic, bringing good luck, enthusiasm and prosperity. Having it by your side will help you develop and advance.

In some cases, the sensation could be that the situation is out of control, and that you have no power to interfere. Fortunately, you’ll be very sensible and you’ll find solutions when in need, at least for some improvement, if not for solving the problem. However, it’ll hardly be enough.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet the right person, because June 2012 promises a full social life with many collective events. A breeze of fresh air will be felt in your stable relationship, too, if you have one. There’ll be something refreshing in the air, something that will keep you in a good mood.

Jupiter, the ruler of Virgo’s house of couples, will enter Gemini and make a square with Neptune, which is precisely in your house of couples. There’s the risk of getting over enthusiastic, of making the wrong impression, of getting involved in suspicious situations that could interfere with career or prestige, maybe of using your relationship to advance socially and hierarchically.

Venus, Libra’s ruler, will be retrograde, which makes June rather complicated on the whole and with natural repercussions on relationships. However, Venus’ retrograde movement will end on June 27th, it’s again about a cycle that will end and that will bear important significance. In conclusion, June will be a complex month that will require attention and patience.

With the Sun and retrograde Venus in your eighth house, on the agenda of this month could also be the recuperation of some goods, an inheritance or issues related to other people’s money: couple or business partners, collaborators, etc. No matter what the situation is, you’d better not take risks and act with more diplomacy.

June is the last month in which Mars will still be in your house of career, and Jupiter will be in your house of work for the first decanate only. Both Mars and Jupiter are active and enterprising, and if you haven’t made big mistakes, they have probably helped you to progress a lot lately.

With Saturn in your house of career and with retrograde Venus in your house of work, in the professional area you’ll feel a mix of pain and pleasure. You’ll enjoy your work but it’ll be badly paid, or you won’t like it but the money will be tempting, or you’ll take pleasure in doing your work but you’ll find out that you have to start all over again.

With Mercury in your house of work, it’ll be an appropriate period for intellectual work, for preoccupations related to communication, information, as well as tasks requiring handiness. Everything involving calculations, editing, or drawing will go well. You’ll also feel the need for change and variety!

Jupiter’s arrival at your fourth house on June 11th will mark the beginning of a one-year period of good luck with home and properties. For now, collaboration is an important source of income, but it needs to be dealt with prudently and tactfully, because it is a vulnerable area.

Sizzling Suzie’s Summer Spreads

Happy happy days!! At long last it looks like summer has finally arrived. What a difference a little sunshine and good weather make to your day. If like me and you have a summer holiday planned you will be watching the pennies. So no spare cash for take away meals and eating out. Never mind in my house we don’t miss out as I am a dab hand at re-creating most of our favourites. Like Burger King Chicken Royale and McD’s fillet of fish. As well as my version of their hot apple pies. So get ready to eat well, save money and treat your taste buds.

Chicken Royale Sandwiches

Skinless chicken mini fillets2 cups of plain flour1 tsp of celery salt1 tbsp dried garlic powder1 tbsp dried onion powder1tsp cayenne pepper2 eggs beatenExtra flour to dredge the filletsBag of washed salad leaves1 bottle of Caesar salad dressingMature cheddar cheese slicesHot oil for fryingPlain rolls or oven bottom muffins

Arrange three large bowls. In one bowl have a little plain flour, in another the beaten egg and in the third all the dried ingredients and the plain flour well mixed. Dredge the fillets one by one in the plain flour to coat them well, then into the beaten egg and into the seasoned flour. It is best to keep one hand dry so only use your left hand to dip chicken in the egg. Ensure you coat the egged chicken really well with the seasoned flour. Fry off in a shallow pan 1/3 filled with oil turn once and pop into a medium oven until all fillets are cooked. Slice the rolls and top one half with cheese. Pop the rolls into the oven to melt the cheese. Toss the salad leaves in the Caesar dressing and place on the roll, top with 2 or 3 fillets and close with the cheese on top. Enjoy with fries or potato salad.

Fish Fillet Sandwiches

Slice a large fish of your liking…(I prefer cod as it’s chunky and meaty) into even size pieces1 egg beatenSalt and pepperPlain flour for dredgingPlain breadcrumbsA little butter for fryingPlain rolls or oven bottom muffins

Season the flour and dredge fish through , dip into the egg and then the crumbs. Fry fish off in a little butter until golden. Serve on a toasted roll or muffin with either tartar sauce or ketchup.

Hot apple fritters

1 pack of ready made French style crepes2 large bramley apples sliced finely1 tbsp of sugarLarge knob of butter1 pack of pancake batter mix made up quite thicklyHot oil for frying

Fry the sliced apple with the sugar and butter until just softened. Allow to cool. Roll up 2 tsp of apple into a crepe ensure all ends are tucked in. Dip each crepe into the pancake mix to coat them and fry in hot oil until crisp and golden. Delicious on their own or with ice cream but be very careful as the filling gets seriously hot.

FUNDING totalling more than £105K has been provided by Inspiring Scotland’s Go2Play programme to improve play opportunities among five to 13-year-olds living in the East End of Glasgow over the next year.

The funding, which is planned to continue for a further 2 years, was awarded to Possibilities East End Kids (PEEK) and Playbusters and will support the development and expansion of ‘Street Play’ in areas where children have the least opportunities to develop through play.

Over 30 local people celebrated the launch of the new rogramme with a special event which took place in Cranhill recently and included den building, arts and crafts and a balloon launch.

Linda Donaldson, local parent, said: “The event was great, it went really well.

There was all the usual play activities along with some extras and it was great to see all the staff there mixing with well with the children.

“We’ve never had anything like Street Play in our area before this - and I must admit

Street Play is definitely a thing for continuing. It gives my wee boy a bit of freedom. The workers are really good with all the kids and have a great deal of patience. I can’t sing their praises enough.”

Melodie Crumlin, PEEK’s Project Manager, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this funding! Childhood should be a time of joy, exploration and learning. PEEK is continually striving to offer quality play opportunities for children in the East End,

but with recent support from Go2Play, we are able to offer much more!”

Robert Doyle, Play Ranger at Playbusters, added: “This is wonderful news for Glasgow.

More children in more areas will have the play and fun they need to grow as people. This is an intelligent investment by the Scottish Government, we will work hard with Inspiring Scotland and PEEK to make sure it transforms the life chances of children here in the East End.”

Over £100k Invested in Outdoor Play for Children in the East End The latest housing statistics for Scotland

released this week, show a fall in the number of affordable homes built last year, which will only fall further without action to prioritise new affordable housing, the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) told the Re-Gen. The total number of housing association completions in the financial year 2011-12 decreased by 7 per cent compared to total completions in the financial year 2010-11 (from 5,111 to 4,776). In total there were 6,882 completions in the financial year 2011-12, including council completions, under the Affordable Housing Supply Programme - a 5 per cent reduction on the previous year. Maureen Watson, Director of Policy at the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations said: “These figures bear out the SFHA’s contention that the number of new genuinely affordable homes will fall. Completions by associations and co-operatives are already down 7% on last year. “The fact remains that, the current level of government grant per unit is not going to enable our members to continue to build at current rates into the future, particularly in rural areas where costs are higher. We recognise the government

recently tweaked the benchmarks for rural and green schemes, but the delivery of genuinely affordable new homes remains highly challenging. “Associations are finding it much harder to access bank lending at reasonable rates, and their balance sheets are being hit by the impact of the welfare reforms and the need to provide more support to tenants,” continued Ms Watson. “Continuing to build at low grant levels is not financially viable – several of our members have already stopped developing, and more may follow suit. “While we don’t doubt the Scottish Government’s commitment to providing more affordable housing, we do want them to understand the huge pressures on housing associations and co-operatives, who have continued to deliver as many homes as they possibly can with less public subsidy. “There is a serious shortage of quality affordable housing across Scotland, with approximately 335,000 households on waiting lists. We understand there is a real constraint on capital funding at present and we back the Government’s call to the UK Chancellor to unlock more funds. Investing in housing will meet social need and provide an undoubted economic boost.”

GLASGOW EAST 5K FUN RUN AND BIG DAY OOTONCE again we are in June and as the good weather has been kind to us all we are hoping for a continuation for a week on Sunday(10th June) as it is the major fun day in the East End with a Sprightly 5K run followed by the popular Big Day OOT.This year’s event promises to be the best ever, (and that is saying something), as it begins with

a “Yellow” dress code theme and we hope that everyone will have at least something yellow on be it trainers, sou’westers or luminous work jackets. After the Warm-Up which everyone looks forward to (beginning at 10-00am) the actual fun run takes place and there’s nothing like the throng of 4000 entrants traipsing around the 5K course at their

own pace, chatting, running, strolling and generally having a good time before reaching the entrance at Tollcross Park. Once the runners have arrived this is when the real Fun begins with the “Big Day OOT” and this year there are Pipe-Bands, Samba Drumming, Street Theatre, Drama

and Dance performances along with Music Sessions Sports Activities and a Castle themed Art Attack taking over Tollcross Park. Live Music will be in attendance as usual with the entertainment stage being the focal point and this will feature local talent and top DJ’s. There will also be loads of stalls manned by local community groups and voluntary services feeding out information on what is happening in the area. Even if you feel a bit peckish there will be a variety of Food stalls and vans to cater for your needs. Sunday the 10th of June is certainly a date for your diary and make sure you plan for the whole day as just dropping in for 5 minutes, only tantalises your Fun Buds. The re-Gen will be taking photos throughout the day so get your make well prepared and you may even be in the next edition. See you All There on the day.

CITY BUILDING CELEBRATES SCOTTISH APPRENTICESHIP WEEKScotland’s largest apprentice training provider honours trainees with awards ceremony

City Building – one of Scotland’s leading construction firms – last Friday recognised the important contribution made by its apprentices with a special internal awards ceremony at Queenslie Training Centre. The ‘Apprentice Awards’ were held as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week, which encourages businesses to showcase the talent, enthusiasm and loyalty which Modern Apprentices bring to Scotland’s workplaces. City Building is Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction firm and its

award-winning Queenslie Training Centre is among the most successful apprentice-training bases in Scotland. A recent recipient of the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development, City Building trains more than 450 apprentices each year with skills such as painting and decorating, joinery, plumbing, electrical, roofing and construction operations. The firm is also training Scotland’s first generation of “renewables”, tradespeople with specific qualifications in micro-renewables as part of their apprenticeship programme. The awards

will honour the achievements of apprentices working across different trades with 21 accolades in total, including awards from the Unite Trade Union for ‘most improved apprentice’ and the Ucatt Trade Union for ‘best attendance.’ Councillor Paul Carey, the new chair of City Building, said: “Apprenticeships are of great importance in helping young people to learn new skills and gain employment. In the current economic climate it is vital that apprentices continue to learn their trade and work towards their goals. “City Building has many talented and dedicated apprentices, and it gives me great pleasure to help recognise their commitment by presenting the Apprentice Awards as one

of my first official duties.” City Building managing director, John Foley, told the Re-Gen, “Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a great opportunity for us to underline our commitment to delivering apprenticeships in Scotland, and to recognise the hard work and achievements of our apprentices. “The Apprentice Awards will recognise the vital contribution made by our apprentices and encourage them to continue to work to the highest standard and encourage positive attitudes. “We are proud to have an impressive apprentice training completion rate of 95 per cent – compared to an industry average of 58 per cent. This is due to City Building’s award-winning training and wrap-around support, and the

Apprentice Awards will further demonstrate the positive effect which Modern Apprenticeships

can have in helping young people build their careers.”

Minister praises City Building’s efforts towards tackling youth unemploymentSCOTLAND’S Minister for Youth Employment Angela Constance also toured City Building’s apprentice-training facilities at Queenslie recently and she too paid tribute to its

employees and apprentices. With turnover of around £200 million,City Building is the largest repairs and maintenance contractor in Scotland carrying out more

than 500,000 repairs every year and, the MSP, and Minister for Youth Employment, said: “I am very impressed with the training on offer at City Building’s Queenslie facility. Improving the employability of young people is a key priority for the Scottish Government. “What we see here is a sensible approach to training young people so they are fully equipped to enter the workplace and take a confident first step onto the career ladder. Credit must go to the staff here who work so hard to maximise the potential of every apprentice that comes through their door.” Managing Director of City Building, John Foley told the Re-Gen, “We are delighted to welcome the Minister for Youth Employment to see for herself the work we do to make sure young people

are given every opportunity to secure a job, with no stone left unturned. “As one of Scotland’s largest construction companies, City Building is very proud to play a big role in tackling youth unemployment. each apprentice is encouraged to reach their full potential. The award-winning Queenslie Training Centre and Construction Skills Academy are the focus for the country’s largest – and most successful – apprentice-training scheme.” City Building has been innovative in its approach to apprenticeships and has worked with clients, sub contractors, its supply chain and other partners to ensure the opportunities for apprenticeships, whether they are adult, youth or rescued, are maximised.

Parkhead Housing Association Celebrates 35th Anniversary

Venue: Car Park at Parkhead Housing Association,

40 Helenvale Street, Parkhead, Glasgow

& Many More Fun n Games

THIS year represents a major milestone for Parkhead Housing Association as they will be celebrating their 35th year in business. Parkhead Housing Associa-tion was first incorporated on 7 July 1977 by our current Vice-Chair John Ferguson MBE using a broken typewriter! John was quoted as saying “In the beginning we really had nothing but a desire to make a difference in the area and I feel that is something we

have achieved and continue to achieve as the business grows”. PHA was one of Scot-land’s first community based Housing Associations. From its first acquisition in 1977 it now has a total stock of nearly 1500 units comprising of both pre 1919 sandstone tenement properties to new build energy efficiency hous-es and flats. PHA has a proud history of achievements in the east end of Glasgow and has a strong forward plan for

the future. A landmark year for the As-sociation has also seen a host of positive changes in how the business is ran. There have been significant chang-es in the Board room with the addition of a financial expert from the banking sector, and co-optees from the Sheltered Registered Tenants Organisa-tion and the PHA Youth Con-ference. This dynamic change has also seen the board utilise new technologies

such as tablet computers and even attending meetings via skype! The Association also held its most successful Ten-ants Conference yet in May where a fantastic number of tenants enjoyed what turned out to be an informative and enjoyable day. This year the Association is hosting a number of events and launching a range of initiatives as part of the 35th Anniversary celebrations. This includes a fantastic fun filled

gala day on Saturday 30th June at the car park of the As-sociation on Helenvale Street. The fun will kick off at 11am and run until 4pm. There will be face painting, a bouncy castle, craft stalls, home bak-ing and lots of fun and games for kids of all ages. The Association is also launching the first Parkhead Educational Bursary where a local person will be able to access funding for their further education. There will

also be a school art competi-tion held in conjunction with Quarrybrae Primary School. Also in October PHA will host the second annual Park-head Variety Show. Last years event was a fantastic success and PHA hope to have an even better event this year! Auditions for the event are taking place on Saturday 25th

August at Whiterose Hall between 12pm and 2pm. If you are interested please get in touch with Ger-aldine or Brenda on 0141 556 6226 or just turn up on the day! Current Chair of PHA Susan McKe-own has said “The Association really is pushing the boat out in terms of the celebrations for the 35th Anniversary. I’m sure the events will be fantastic but in particular the bursary will provide some-one in the east end

with the resources to go and better themselves with a first class education, which I think is fantastic.” As you can see there is a fun filled schedule of events for all the family, for more information please visit:

www.parkheadha.org.uk

The Association’s stock is adjacent to the 2014 Com-monwealth Games Village site and near both Parkhead Stadium, home to Celtic Football Club, and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. At the centre of the area is the second most impor-tant civic realm in the city;

Parkhead Cross, which is a conservation area and hosts 2 grade A listed and 2 grade B listed buildings. One of which was designed by the same firm of architects that employed Charles Rennie Macintosh, whose influence is clearly seen in the many aspects of the building.

“Parkhead Housing Association will con-tinue to develop its housing stock by whatever means necessary. A recent acquisition off the shelf from kiers at the Belvedere Village site represented a new avenue for Park-head Housing Association and an innovative approach in increasing their stock to service their burgeoning waiting list. The Association will also continue to explore any further development opportunities in the area that may assist with their growing number of applicants. PHA also has a significant investment programme where they aim to spend £1m a year for the next 30 years on upgrading and improving their current housing stock for the benefit of their existing tenants."

The Association’s stock is adjacent to the 2014 Com-monwealth Games Village site and near both Parkhead Stadium, home to Celtic Football Club, and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. At the centre of the area is the second most impor-tant civic realm in the city;

A recent acquisition off the shelf from kiers at the Belvedere Village site represented a new avenue for Parkhead Housing Association and an innovative approach in increasing their stock to service their burgeoning waiting list. The Association will also continue to explore any further development opportunities in the area that may assist with their growing number of applicants. PHA also has a significant investment programme where they aim to spend £1m a year for the next 30 years on upgrading and improving their current housing stock for the benefit of their existing tenants."

SLIMMING World run a competition every year to find which male in the class has lost the most weight and the Re-Gen is delighted to report that one of our customers (and a very good friend), John Martin of M&M Glass and Glazing who attends the Slimming World class in the Masonic Hall in Lochdochart Road Easterhouse, was awarded Slimming World’s “Man of the Year” title recently. “Big John” or as he is now known “Wee John” lost 4 stones by attending Carrina McGovern’s Thursday night class. Losing that amount of weight is a great feat for John and he is certainly feeling the benefit now although his patter is still as bad as when he was at his heaviest.

For details of Carrina’s class phone her on 0141 781 1694 she also runs a Monday class at St Benedicts Chapel Hall.

GLASGOW is gearing up to bring back its much deserved title of Curry Capital of Britain. This year’s competition kicks off with a plea to the public to nominate their favourite Indian restaurant – and one they think has the potential to put Glasgow back in the hot seat. The four restaurants with the most nominations will then go on to represent the city in the 2012 Curry Capital of Britain award.

The competition sees cities from across the UK go head to head for the national title.Glasgow has won the top title four times - in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2010. It was runner up in 2011, 2004, 2005 and 2007.Lord Provost Sadie Docherty is determined to lead Glasgow to the winning spot this year and is looking to the public for support. She said: “I am really looking forward to bringing the curry

crown back to Glasgow where it belongs. “We are, after all, a city with a passion for curry and fantastic eating establishments. There really is no other city like ours and having won the competition four times already I’m sure we can again. “I know the people of Glasgow will back their city and nominate the restaurants they know can help return the curry capital of Britain honour to us.”

The public has until Friday 24 August 2012 to nominate the Indian restaurants they think can woo the judges and win it for Glasgow. The four restaurants to have received the most nominations will be announced on Wednesday 5 September. As part of the competition these restaurants will be invited to hold a special dinner in the lead up to the final with proceeds going to The Curry

Tree Charitable Fund to help the poor and undernourished around the world. The restaurants will also be secretly visited by a team of independent judges before the winning city is announced on Monday 29 October. The city council is backing the bid to support the restaurants in its quest to return the accolade of Britain’s curry capital. Letters have been sent to Indian restaurants across the city

encouraging their customers to nominate them. The council has also made it easy for the public to nominate their favourite restaurant online. Nomination forms are available to download or complete at www.glasgow.gov.uk/currycapital.You can also nominate by email [email protected] or by post to Curry Capital of Britain, PO Box 416, Surbiton, Surrey, KT1 9BJ.

6o Glorious Years of Her Majesty’s reign were celebrated at Caledonia Primary school earlier this week as the pupils and staff held an indoor street party. With the Flags and bunting adorning the main hall the janitor had prepared the tables and chairs so that every kid could take part in what the country will be celebrating this week-end. Two magnificent cakes decorated with the Union Flag made by Clark Baxter, ( one of the pupil’s parents), were in prime position and following a

trumpet solo of “God save the Queen” by young Ami Provan, the festivities began. Both the

Children and the Staff had an amazing time and everything went really well.

THE Children at Thorntree Primary in Greenfield Shettleston have been working very hard over the past few weeks to raise cash for Sports Aid and last week the Re-Gen caught up with two of the classes involved. The Primary 4 classes from rooms 8 and 13 ran a mile decked out in red to show their affiliation with “Sports

Relief” and at the end when the sponsorship cash was totalled up it was found that they had raised the tremendous sum of £528.98. This money will be forwarded to the “Sports Relief” campaign to be used to help those who are less fortunate than us. Very well done to the staff and pupils at Thorntree Primary in raising such a tremendous sum.

MILNBANK GALA DAYMILNBANK Housing Association held their annual Gala Day last Saturday and the weather was just what the doctor ordered as the sun split the skies and it was shorts and sun-cream all round. There was a slight hiccup prior to the official opening as 3 motorists left their cars parked in a restricted street but following a

phone call the offending vehicles were removed and this enabled the bouncy castles and other items to take their place. With Elaine McDougall formally opening the Gala Day accompanied by MSP Paul Martin, things were soon in full swing and everyone seemed to get into the mood. With music from the Black Star Steel Band it was like a

Carribean atmosphere in Ballindalloch Drive and as the kids (and some adults) tried the rides, there was certainly a feel-good factor throughout. Well-done once again to the staff and committee at Milnbank Housing Association for all their hard work which went towards making the day a rousing success.

SUMMER’S here(we hope) and there are a few of us who are not going away this year but that doesn’t mean we will miss out on the fun. Day-trips are a great way to capture the holi-day mood and places like Ayr, Saltcoats and the like are only a bus or train ride away and if you book early enough

you can get it cheaper. Glasgow has wonder-ful parks and a packed lunch and a few juices can make for a great day especially if the kids are young. Trips to places like New Lanark and Strathclyde Park are also within driving dis-tance if you have a car and don’t want to ven-ture too far and there

is some great enter-tainment around these places. I know Muse-ums are not everyone’s cup of tea but have you thought back to being a child at school and be-ing taken around these places. I know that as the years go by I keep promising myself that I will visit Glasgow Art Galleries and Museum to see the things that when I was younger were in my mind boring but now seem appealing. Remember during the summer there are loads of Gala Days taking place in our area and these can be visited and in many cases are free so check them out.

Hopefully we have given you a few tips as the holidays approach but no matter

whether you pick up on these or not have a great summer.

A TRAIL-BLAZING initiative to help the unemployed learn new skills and improve their job prospects has been declared an overwhelming success.

Nine long-term unemployed people from the East End of Glasgow have just completed their studies at John Wheatley College and they gave the pioneering project an over-whelming thumbs up as they marked their achievement at a “Celebration of Learning” event at the College. Some already have interviews for jobs while others are adding to their qualification with further learning opportunities. The “Learning Works” initiative was led by Thenue Housing, John Wheatley College and the local regeneration agency, Clyde Gateway who all worked together after £80,000 in cash was obtained to fund it. This money came from The Scottish Government’s Wider Role Fund and Clyde Gateway.

The Project was aimed at unemployed people in the area of the east end served by Clyde Gateway and Thenue also contributed £20,000 of its money and resources. The course included computer skills, health and wellbeing, digital art, personal devel-opment, communications, numeracy and literacy. Now a new intake of students for Learning Works will take place

in September to help more local long term unemployed people in the East End. Help with travel costs was provided and State benefits were entirely unaf-fected by joining the course.

It provided a recognised quali-fication from the Scottish Qualifica-tions Authority. The Awards to those who took part were presented by Alan Inglis, Vice Princi-pal of the College and the course was delivered mainly at the East End Healthy Living Centre in Bridgeton but also at John Wheatley College’s East End Campus in Haghill. Former machinist Marie Fletcher from Bridgeton joined the course after she lost her job when the company she worked for folded as a result of the recession. Marie said: “The whole experience was wonderful. Learning new skills while knowing it will help our employment prospects is very worthwhile. We all found that learning at John Wheatley College was a great experi-ence and to have completed the course and received our Awards makes you feel fan-tastic!” Alan Sherry, Principal

of John Wheatley College said: “The College is delighted and proud to be associated with the Learning Works pro-gramme and its impressive learners. Apart from all of their hard work and commit-ment, the core of their success has been the partnership approach which has ensured support for each of the learn-ers as they need it. Thenue are to be congratulated on the level of input from their expe-rienced and skilled staff, as are our own teaching staff. “The additional funding from both Clyde Gateway and the Wider Role Fund has been necessary to help develop the pro-gramme and allow a second

group of learners to be recruit-ed and given this excellent opportunity to move towards employment. We look forward to having them here and con-gratulate all the students who have made a positive move forward with Learning Works.” Charlie Turner, Chief Execu-tive of Thenue, said: “Thenue Housing is proud to have played a key role in Learning Works. It shows very clearly that a housing association like ourselves does so much more than simply collecting the rent and building houses.

We consider helping com-munities and the people who live there an essential part of the work we do.”

CALEDONIA Primary School in Baillieston is to receive £2000 to enable a group of teachers, pupils and parents to attend a week long experience at Skye’s Gaelic learning hub.

The School has been nominated for the new Gaelic category in the Scottish Educa-tion Awards and Minister for Learn-ing and Scotland’s Languages Dr. Alasdair Allan said, “ “The Scottish Government is committed to a sustainable and vibrant future for Gaelic and I was heartened to hear about Caledonia, who had no previous connec-tions to Gaelic making signifi-cant strides in this area. “The school’s work on Gaelic has built up from a lunchtime club into dedicated timetabling for Gaelic for all pupils. I am delighted that the Scottish Government has been able to help fund a trip to SMO, against the beautiful backdrop of Skye, which will give pupils, teachers and parents the chance to further enhance the school’s Gaelic knowledge.

“The school has been nomi-nated for this year’s Education Awards and I wish them the very best of luck in the judging process and I hope to hear about their experiences at SMO very soon.”The school’s Deputy Head

Teacher Jackie Mullen added: “We are delighted to have been recognised for our work in Gaelic and we are committed to further developing and sustain-ing the work in this area.” The

pupils have certainly grasped the mettle as far as learning Gaelic is concerned and every week, along with the lunchtime classes, they receive a word or phrase at assembly on a Monday, which they have to use throughout that week. Previous words and phrases which have been learned are displayed on the “Gaelic Wall” for reference purposes. A Gaelic tutor was booked earlier this year to give adults in the area a taster ses-sion and it seemed to have gone down well. The £2000 has come from the Scottish Government’s Gaelic Fund. **”Tha sin glè mhath!” pronounced :-hah shin gleh VAH, meaning:- “That’s very good!”

The Gladiator Weightlifting Club based in Easterhouse enjoyed more success recently at the Scottish Development Cup and Pitlochry Youths Championships 2012. The Gladiators took through a team of ten lifters and dominated proceedings winning 9 Gold and 1 Silver medal. This was a fantastic success on the back of their excellent performance in March at the British Development and Schools Championships in Birmingham. The youngsters also witnessed current Commonwealth Silver Medalist, Peter Kirkbride smash a new Scottish Senior record as a warm up for his participation for Great Britain at London 2012. The majority of lifters came from the Gladiators Schools Weightlifting

Development Programme, a successful programme which has been operating in, Caledonia Primary School, Garrowhill Primary School, Aultmore Park Primary School & Mount Vernon Primary School. St Andrews Secondary School was also represented by a few of the lifters whom had progressed from last year’s pilot project. The Programme is now set to expand into schools in the North of the City, with the vision eventually being that schools throughout the entirety of Glasgow will enjoy this excellent programme. The Gladiator Weightlifting clubs focus is now turning to The FULDA Cup International Team Championship Event being held in Lochen in Austria at the start of this month. The club

will be represented by a team of 9 lifters. The team will be made up of 3 under 23 lifters, Haris Ansari, Colette Will and Mark Fitzpatrick, 1 under 16, Matthew Lavery and 5 of the young lifters, Joseph Kay, Jason Epton, Daniel Richardson, Alex Richardson and Charley Craig. The teamwill depart Glasgow on the 5th June, compete on 10th & 11th June and return home on the 12th June. The early indications are extremely positive with all lifters being ranked in the top 3 for all categories. The achievements to date are nothing short of incredible from the young lifters and any success at this International event would be a tremendous boost to the host City of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Last Saturday saw a good turn-out, especial-ly as the sun was beating down outside, for the annual Parkhead Hous-ing Association Tenants Conference, which was held in Parkhead Congre-gational Church. Hosted by Susan McKeown (PHA chair) and David Wilson (Housing Manager), the

conference had some ex-cellent speakers includ-ing new Calton Councillor Yvonne Kucuk speaking on the People’s Trust De-velopment and Fire Offi-cer Allan Brown of Calton Fire and Rescue service. Graeme Aitkin spoke of the Tenants Agenda and there was also a talk of Fuel Poverty by William

including John Wheatley College, GeezaBreak, Glasgow Regeneration Agency and Parkhead Credit Union there was loads to look at and glean information from

and during the day music was supplied by “The Lovecatz”. All in all the event proved very worthwhile for the ten-ants of Parkhead Housing Association.

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US th

e general public to

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. V

ictoria Crosse

s have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE –

NOTHING

LESS) t

here is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St

. Johnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Fir

m”

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So

what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in

such a short space of tim

e

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their e

motions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers

in an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all o

f a sudden are construed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Fir

m” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SID

ES ARE A

S BAD AS O

NE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Fir

m” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Fir

m” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Fir

m” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

On Tuesday 15th May, Po-lice Constables Watt and Morrison who work as part of the Response Policing Team based at Shettleston, responded to a call from a member of the public at Myreside St, in Glasgow’s East End. The caller was

reporting a male breaking in to and stealing from a van. The concerned member of the public passed a de-tailed description of the male responsible. Due to the officer’s quick re-sponse and a thorough

search of the surround-ing area a male, who had matched the description as stopped and apprehended. The property which had been taken from the van was recovered and returned to the rightful owner.

Sergeant’s Milliken and Hut-ton, who are responsible for the running of the commu-nity policing teams based at Shettleston, were on pedal cycle patrol on Saturday evening (12/05/12) within Tollcross Park, when they heard over their radio’s a reported housebreaking at Lidl on Tollcross Road. Both Sergeant’s with nearly 40 years police service be-tween them, pedalled furi-

ously towards the shop, beating response officers in patrol cars. Once at the shop they found the side door lying open and de-cided to enter the shop. The Sergeant’s found a male inside, helping himself to goods off the shelves. They then arrested the male be-fore handing him to officers who arrived seconds later in a marked police vehicle to be taken to the cells.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Mawson wel-comed 7 new probation-ers to Glasgow North East and East Renfrew-shire this week. The new recruits have just completed a rigorous 10 week training course at The Scottish Police Col-lege, Tulliallan, where they have been trained in General Police Duties, Road Policing, officer safety and Emergency Life Saving, amongst

other skills. This week sees the pro-bationers begin the oper-ational phase of their two year probationary period, before they return to Tulliallan to complete their training, and sit their final exams. They had a meeting with Mr. Mawson on Monday morning (21/05/2012), where they were all told what was expect-ed of them and the high standards expect-

ed of officers working in B Division. Mr. Mawson was quick to highlight to the pro-bationers that as of now

they play an integral roll in keeping the people and communities where they work safe. The recruits come from a variety of backgrounds before joining the police, from students to teaching staff. All of them agree, policing will be a new and demanding challenge for them, but cannot wait to get started. The new officers have been sent out to offices throughout the east end, including Baillieston, Shettleston and Easter-house.

FIVE Glasgow City Ladies players were in the Scotland starting line-up for the Gdansk challenge match - and two of them netted. Jane Ross crossed for Lisa Evans to open the scoring with a back post header. The roles were reversed when Ross headed a second goal. GRASSROOTS football at its very best was on display at the Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie, where the Scottish Youth Football Association held their annual festival of national cup finals. Over 30,000 players in 1,502 teams competed through the various age groups. With such a high number, this was the largest participating sporting event over two weekends in Scotland. Interestingly, there appears to be a geographical divide with the East and Edinburgh teams dominating younger groups, while West appears to be the best and strongest in older teams. The middle age groups tend to favour North, where Under-16s have produced winners on five previous occasions (before the latest final) by clubs from Aberdeen. Cameron Buchan (Banchory Boys F.C.) just missed out on a unique personal record. Having been in the successful Dyce Boys’ Club teams that won on successive years - Under-14 to Under-16 - his Royal Deeside side lost 2-1 after extra-time against Ayrshire cracks, Bellfield Royals, in the Under-17 final at Airdrie. My sincere thanks to Chief Executive Mr David Little and his hard-working Scottish Youth Football Association staff at Hampden Park for keeping Re-Gen Sport fully updated right from the First Round onwards, and extending an invitation to attend all finals. In addition, we have been able to follow the progress of the National Lady Darling Cup. Said Mr Little: “All seven finals were of an excellent standard of play with great skills, fantastic goals and lots of honest efforts from participating clubs.” FULL SCOTTISH CHALLENGE CUP RESULTS ROUND-UP, MAY, 2012. A big thank-you to Fosters Scottish Amateur Sunday Trophy Secretary Robert McGechie for providing excellent co-operation and feedback with pairings and results right through from the first round of the competition. Finnart AFC were in brilliant form as they crushed The Geet 5-0 at Livingston’s Braidwood Motor Company Stadium. This result means Finnart have won the competition four times in the past six seasons, and eight overall. An early 2-0 lead set the foundations for victory and despite having a player sent off early in the second half, Finnart hit another three goals. All credit to their Ayrshire opponents for a battling performance in this their first-ever national final. Sponsors’ Man of the Match vote to Finnart’s hat-trick hero David MacKay.

CLUBS AIM FOR REGIONAL SILVERWARESCOTTISH Youth Football Association-registered clubs are aiming to end another demanding season with West Regional Cup success. Fresh from the exciting national cup finals at Airdrie, Petershill Park will host the Only Sport-sponsored tournament on the weekend of June 9-10. The Junior club’s excellent venue eagerly awaits some well-known names. And we can look forward to the mouth-watering prospect of watching a combination of Scottish Cup winners, together with former and current Regional Cup holders. Three finals are scheduled for each full day. The staggered kick-off times will hopefully encourage people to attend and support their favourite team. Given that 69 goals were scored in the semi-finals, we should see some tremendous action, and possible nail-biting penalty kick shoot-outs if previous finals are any guideline.

The Celtic Boys’ Club will be hoping to have their name engraved on the Under-13 trophy after winning the Under-14 tourney (2007 and ‘08), Under-16 (2008 and ‘09), and Under-17 (2009). Moorlands needed penalty kicks in their Under-14 semi-final, while opponents St Andrews edged out Maryhill Juniors. Antonine Blacks and St Peters contest the Under-15 final - a year on from the latter winning 3-0 at Under-14 level. Incidentally, Antonine will meet their Paisley opponents off the back of a 1-0 defeat against Edinburgh aces, Tynecastle F.C., in the Scottish Cup final at Airdrie. Under-16 finalists Port Glasgow claimed a major scalp in beating Harmony Row last time out, and await former Under-14 holders Barrhead Yellow.

Erskine YFC have a great cup record. Last season, they lost the Under-16 final on penalties against Westerton. Now they meet Albion Rovers, who dumped semi opponents Harmony Row and Under-14 winners in 2009. No doubt about top cup final billing. That must be reserved for Bonnyton Thistle, who won the Under-19 cup last season against Campsie Black Watch, and are going for the double. It is difficult to see the pressure getting to Bonnyton. After all, they have just won back-to-back Scottish Cups, and the odds must be stacked against Rossvale. HOW THEY GOT HERE: Semi-final results... Under-13 - Milngavie 4, Linwood 1; Hillwood 4, The Celtic Boys’ Club 5. Under-14 - Maryhill Juniors 2, St Andrews 3; Rossvale Thistle 4, Moorlands 4 (Moorlands won on pens); Under-15 - St Peters 5, Mojams White 1; Antonine Blacks 6, Gleniffer 0. Under-16 - Barrhead Yellow 2, Clydebank 1; Port Glasgow 3, Harmony Row 1. Under-17 -

Harmony Row 2, Albion Rovers 3; St Mirren YFC 1, Erskine YFC 6. Under-19 - Rossvale 5, East End 3 aet; Goldenhill 0, Bonnyton Thistle 3. THE 2011 FINALS: Results: Under-13 - Antonine BC 0, St Andrews 3. Under-14 - Antonine Blacks 0, St Peters 3. Under-15 - Drumchapel United 3, Clydebank BC 2. Under-16 - Erskine YFC 2, Westerton 2 (Westerton won on pens). Under-17 - Renfrew Victoria 2, Milton Stars 1. Under-19 - Bonnyton Thistle 2, Campsie Black Watch 1. THE 2012 FINALS. Fixtures, with kick-off times in brackets, are as follows. SATURDAY, JUNE 9. Under-13 - Milngavie BC v The Celtic BC (10am); Under-15 - St Peters BC v Antonine Blacks (11.50am); Under-19 - Rossvale v Bonnyton Thistle (1.50pm). SUNDAY, JUNE 10. Under-14 - St Andrews v Moorlands (10am); Under-16 - Barrhead Yellow v Port Glasgow (11.50am); Under-17 - Albion Rovers v Erskine YFC (1.50pm).

FOSTERS THANK-YOU
