Although these figures are a vast improvement on past years Chief Superintendant Mawson stressed to us that the force is totally committed on reducing them even more. Looking at Murders and Attempted Murders in “B Division” which takes in the East End area, these have dropped by an amazing 45.8% from 83 to 45 which in real terms are people’s lives we are speaking about here. This means less families in the area are experiencing that dreaded knock on the door with officers bearing the news that their, son, husband, brother etc... will never be coming home again. Violent crimes, serious assaults and complaints of youth disorder figures, have also shown a tremendous dip within the whole area and that has to be applauded. Statistics are all right to look at over the period but it is the incentives that the police are introducing that are making the big differences these coupled with a more management driven leadership have combined to reflect the results now being achieved. Many people reading this will be saying, “That’s not our area they are speaking about, as we still have problems”, of course this is very true but Strathclyde Police are continuing to work on these problems and according to Chief Superintendant Mawson inroads are being made on a daily basis. He told our reporter, “ We have a number of operations planned in the forthcoming months including, addressing Anti-Social behaviour, Violent crime and Drug Crime and make no mistake we will be relentless in addressing these issues. We will also continue to focus on alcohol related crime, youth disorder, violence and other issues we realise the community is concerned about. Another initiative that is producing results and causing havoc within the criminal fraternity is the seizure of assets from criminal activities and local projects are beginning to benefit from the cash recovered from these results”. School Campus officers have been deployed at various schools in the area and this initiative is working very well in both an educational and public relations exercise and this coupled with extra patrols, police off road motor cycles, plain clothed and uniformed officers have made a big impact on the gang fighting culture. The Gang Reduction Initiative Programme (GRIP) plus a specially produced DVD for use at schools are both working towards reducing violence but as normal the police are also depending on calls from members of the public to alert them to youths causing disturbances. All it takes is a telephone call and the police will react to these situations. Since the re-organising of the police force in 2010 Strathclyde Police have produced excellent results and with these latest set of figures they continue to do so. The great thing is, Chief Superintendant Mawson and his troops will not let complacency set in but will continue to serve and protect the residents of this area to the best of their abilities. North Glasgow’s Crime Figures PlummetFOLLOWING a meeting between Strathclyde Police Divisional Commander Wayne Mawson and the Re-Gen earlier this week to review the crime statistics within North Glasgow we were very pleasantly surprised to learn that serious crime figures in our area have been drastically cut.

This means less families in the area are experiencing that dreaded knock on the door with officers bearing the news that their, son,

husband, brother etc... will never be coming home again.

He told our reporter, “ We have

a number of operations planned in the forthcoming months including, addressing Anti-Social behaviour, Violent crime and Drug Crime and make no mistake we will be relentless in addressing these issues.

School Campus officers have been deployed at various schools in the area and this initiative is working very well in both an educational and public relations exercise and this coupled with extra patrols,

police off road motor cycles, plain clothed and uniformed officers have made a big impact on the gang fighting culture. The Gang Reduction Initiative Programme (GRIP) plus a specially produced DVD for use at schools are both working towards reducing violence but as normal the police are also depending on calls from members of the public to alert them to youths causing disturbances. All it takes is a telephone call

and the police will react to these situations.

MSP Wins Train BattleFOLLOWING lengthy campaigning against the Scottish Government’s proposals to increase the number of train services from Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street thereby having a detrimental effect on the Anniesland to Queen Street via Ashfield train service, it looks like local MSP Patricia Ferguson has won the fight. The MSP for Springburn has been campaigning to ensure that changes to the service would not affect people in her constituency as increasing the number of trains would have meant the Anniesland train being diverted via Hyndland

thereby adding 30 mins to a 5 minute journey. Following an announcement made in Parliament this week the Government has dropped its proposal to introduce two additional trains per hour between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh thereby preventing the North Glasgow suburban line from going directly to Queen Street. MSP Patricia Ferguson told the Re-Gen, “ I am delighted that the Minister has bowed to pressure and recognised the importance of the Anniesland to Queen Street via Ashfield train service. This is an extremely busy and popular line and the implication of the

previous proposals would have been the gradual decline and possible loss of the service.”

AMBULANCE SERVICE STEPS UP PATIENT CAREGLASGOW SNP MSP and depute convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s Health Committee Bob Doris has hailed the introduction of a new direct patient booking line for the Patient Transport Service.Staff at the Ambulance Service call centre in Inverness now have more information available about individual patient needs which means they are better equipped to provide a service tailored to each patient. Since the service was launched in the north of Scotland in April it has already received more than 6,000 calls. The service became available to Glasgow patients on 26 June.

Mr Doris said:“At the Scottish Parliament Health Committee we are constantly looking at new ways of improving the experience of patients in our NHS. Sometimes it’s quite simple ideas that have the greatest impact.“Patients in Glasgow who have mobility or health issues which make them reliant on the Patient Transport Service will now receive a higher standard of care.“The new 0300 1231236 number is also complimented by a text relay service for the deaf.“Investment in new in-vehicle technology also helps to plan the service and to make sure

patients are catered for in a way that is sensitive to their exact requirements.“I wish the Ambulance Service well in the continued successful rollout of the project to the East of Scotland and I believe the improvements in patient experience will be dramatic.”

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

Introducing Glasgow’s New Lord ProvostON Thursday 17th May 2012 Councillor Sadie Docherty was voted by her fellow councillors to the post of Lord Provost. This is a tremendous honour and one which is well deserved as the new Lord Provost has worked tirelessly as a community representative prior to becoming a Councillor in 2007, for the Linn ward. The Re-Gen caught up with Lord Provost Docherty in her office at the City Chambers last week and during our meeting we found her to be a very amiable person who is certainly switched on as far as the needs of the City of Glasgow are concerned. Married with two grown up children Councillor Docherty has always been interested in local politics and although

she was heavily involved with housing with Glasgow District Council and then with GHA, her objective was to become a local councillor as she felt she had a lot more to offer the people of the City. This has been proved over the years as Councillor Sadie Docherty certainly made her mark by dealing with constituents problems in a fair and diplomatic way. It was no surprise when Councillor Docherty was made the Council’s Executive Member for Communities and Housing and she was also Chair of the Policy Development Committee responsible for Sustainability and the Environment and also Children and Families. To this extent she has a great working knowledge and extensive

experience of the Council making her very conversant with the workings of the City. The new Lord Provost is certainly a “People Person” and her communication and organisational skills come to the fore when she is within her comfort zone mixing and meeting people. Councillor Sadie Docherty is proud to be a Glaswegian and she feels her role in life is to do her best for the City of Glasgow. Asked what she would like to achieve during her term in office the Lord Provost told the Re-Gen, “I would love to improve the aspirations and expectations of the citizens of Glasgow, particularly in these difficult times. I intend to engage with Glasgow’s Citizens at every

level to promote greater pride in our City as a great place to live, work, visit and invest in”. With Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games this is a tremendous time to be involved within the City and showcase Glasgow worldwide. What this does is, to ensure that there will be a lasting legacy for the City and I intend to play my full part in this process.” To give the citizens of Glasgow an insight into how people friendly The Lord Provost is the Re-Gen witnessed her going to an event recently and as she crossed George’s Square she stopped and introduced herself to not only fellow Glaswegians but also to visitors from abroad and although this may not strike many as being important we can assure you that those she met were delighted to not only have met the First Citizen of Glasgow but also that she had taken the time to shake their hands and introduce herself. It certainly left a lasting memory in many hearts. Councillor Docherty is looking forward to the vast diversity in her role as Lord Provost with the fact that she will be attending Gala Days and local events one week and then, meeting and greeting the Queen, members of the Royal Family and important worldwide dignitaries the next. Glasgow’s Lord Provost is also Lord Lieutenant of Glasgow and therefore the Queen’s official representative in the City. In this

capacity, the Lord Provost hosts visits by all members of the Royal Family to Glasgow and events relating to the Armed Forces, for example, Remembrance Day plus Armed Forces Day and she will also present Honours and Queen’s Awards on behalf of Her Majesty. The Lord Provost of Glasgow is a tremendous honour and, for a woman from Castlemilk, who set out to fight for her neighbours rights and latterly for the community of Glasgow, (because that is what we all are when it comes down to it), it is fantastic recognition

and shows in just what high esteem, she is thought of by her fellow peers. The Lord Provost position is a demanding one and it is accepted that it needs a strong person to perform the duties that go along with such a high profile job. The Re-Gen can re-assure our readers that, in Lord Provost Sadie Docherty, Glasgow City Council has chosen well and chosen wisely. We wish her unparalleled success in her new position and we are look forward to her showing, by her words and deeds, that Glasgow is a place to be proud of.

Times are changing and if you are not ready to face them you may be left a little bewildered and stagnant, now is the time to decide what and who you still want around and to begin making steps towards changing unpleasant situations, just remember to think before you leap or speak as you’re not always known for diplomacy.

I know that all saying all work and no play! But this month is all about opportunities at work, or new enterprises, things that you are passionate about, success can be yours if you are on the ball, there are major changes coming and also reviews of how you may have handled you money in the past but a new you is immerging a more fragile you?

Some of you are looking for work and may go back to your roots and use skill you learned a long time back for a current post, there are some surprises along the way with Jupiter in your sign it is bringing luck to your door, you have many thought and ideas of how to get your life going, now is the time, what are you waiting for.

You seem to be creating a monster where work is concerned, you are seeing challenges as problems, can I ask that you stop and look at your current situation as you have the ability to achieve all you set out too, it is important to look at your emotional state as I think you have a case of the green eyed monster, stay put until confusion settles.

One for reminiscing of the past and going over old data, you now have to focus on what you can achieve and not what might have been you are a forced to be reckoned with this month, stick to your guns and don’t be backed into a corner over work related incidents as you have all the facts in front of you, a time of peace and serenity is on its way.

Time to let the world see the real you, you don’t often show your alluring smouldering side, but hey watch out, your love life is about to get hot and shall we say sweaty! Those you love will be drawn to you like a magnet and those you have seen the light with will get their marching orders, out with the old and in with the new, travel to warmer climates is on the agenda too.

Projects you started in the spring time may suddenly come to the fore, and your patients with this matter have been worthwhile. You will soon have reason to feel very pleased with yourself; there could be natural endings and new people and places coming into your life now. Try not to get carried away with your spending this month.

There may be times this month when you feel as everything is getting too much, but please let me re-assure you, you have the ability to overcome all difficulties, you may have to face up to personal issues, again listen to the advice you give others as this will benefit you too.

Decisions need to be made around a working relationship, although you are normally laid back and happy go lucky when it comes to work, someone has pushed you to the edge, remember to put your best foot forward, remain calm and get your point over, try not to down tools and walk away.

You welcome responsibility and at times you thrive on it, this month is about striking the right balance, try to avoid oppressing others and remain tactful under stress, delegate workloads and remember you need some free time too! Some of you may hear new regarding finances, and there could be some money coming your way.

It is a month to be practical, buckle down and get on with it, practical and efficient will see you completing projects this month, however on the full moon you seem to be going over past emotional events, which may knock you off balance from the 13th your ruling planet Uranus goes backward and you will speak as you find.

The stagnant situation is now moving forward and someone in authority offers you a helping hand it seems as if your charming ways are paying off now. Travel is good this month and when the sun moves into Leo there could be good new around family matters. The full moon is Capricorn awakens your ambitions.

Fry the onion and garlic in the olive oil. Add the rice, lemon juice and thyme fry for 2 min stirring continuously. Add the boiling water, reduce the heat and cover pan with a lid and simmer for 10-15 min until rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed. Leave to stand for a few min before serving.

~ GREEK SALAD ~• Lettuce• Tomatoes• Cucumber• Onions• Black olives • Feta cheese• Olive oil• Lemon juice• Salt and Pepper

Roughly chop all ingredients to the same size .drizzle with the olive oil and squeeze the juice of a whole lemon on it. Season well and toss before serving. ** calorie counters omit the cheese.

~ KLEFTIKO (Roast Lamb) ~

• 1 boned shoulder of lamb• 1 cup of olive oil• 3- 4 finely sliced cloves of garlic• 1 lemon • Bunch of fresh rosemary• Salt and Pepper

Heat the oven to 220c. Pour some of the olive oil in a large pan and brown the meat on all sides. Put meat in a heavy lidded casserole dish and make some slits in the meat with a sharp knife and insert the garlic slices. Srinkle with the lemon juice and herbs, season and cover. Roast in the oven for about 20-25 min. Reduce the heat of the oven to around 180c and continue to cook for around 30 min per pound. Once meat is cooked remove from oven and let stand for 15-20 min before carving. Serve with rice and salad or you could roast some potatoes.

~ BAKED FIGS WITH HONEY AND GREEK YOGHURT ~

• Allow 2 fresh figs per person• Lemon juice • Large tub of natural Greek yoghurt• Jar of honey

Quarter each fig without cutting the whole way through, and fan out a little. Place figs in a roasting dish , sprinkle with a little lemon juice and roast I n a hot oven for 10-15 min.Top with the yoghurt and driz-zle with the honey to serve.

This week I have created a fantastic Greek menu. Lots of flavours to bring back memories of white sandy beaches and sunset meals in the local tav-erna. You will be surprised at just how easy it is to cook and how simple the flavours really are. Most of the ingredients are things you will already have in your larders. All you need is a bottle of Ouzo or retsina wine to transport you back to Greece.

HRH meets Alive and KickingHER Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth visited Glasgow earlier this week as part of the 60th Jubilee celebrations and Her Majesty started the day with a thanksgiving service at Glasgow Cathedral, where she was accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, before paying a visit to George Square in the city centre. They met community leaders in a marquee in the square which was decorated with red, white and blue bunting. She met various projects from the city including members of “Alive and Kicking” which is based in the Red Road Flats in Springburn. Accompanied by the Lord Provost, The Queen and Duke spent time talking to the group and hearing what they do prior to heading for St Margaret’s Hospice, in Clydebank and afterwards to attend a lunch in the grounds of Our Holy Redeemer Primary School in the town.

entertained.Lord Provost Docherty said: “Every year Glasgow puts on a great show for Armed Forces Day. The event allows us the opportunity to celebrate the honour, pride and courage of those who have served in the military. “It’s always a pleasure to welcome the armed forces and their families to our city

and to show our support. “This year we had a host

of attractions and activities

for all the family to enjoy and it was a great

day. I was delighted

to see so many people

from Glasgow and beyond come along on Saturday and show their support and appreciation and enjoy the day’s entertainment.”

Residents at historic GHA flats celebrate diamond anniversary

RESIDENTS at one of Glasgow’s hidden architectural gems have celebrated the diamond anniversary of their homes.Crathie Court, an unusual art deco block of flats tucked away in Thornwood in the West End, was designed after World War 2 as an experiment by Glasgow Corporation in high-rise living. The eight-storey block was finished in 1952 and the first residents to move in were all single women. The block went on to be nicknamed the “spinster flats”.Around 30 residents gathered on Saturday ( June 30) to mark the 60th anniversary of the historic flats in the residents’ common room. Glasgow

Housing Association Chair Gordon Sloan unveiled a plaque at the front of the building. One of the original tenants Betty Low died earlier this year – and as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations a plaque was unveiled in her memory on a park bench in the grounds by resident Stevie Leitch. The 88 studio flats, which today house mainly older people – both men and women - recently had £2.6million of work carried out by Glasgow Housing Association (GHA).The work included new windows and heating, new kitchens, bathrooms and doors, painting and tiling the closes and landscaping the gardens and grounds around the block. The

Common Room was also done up and a new TV installed. The flats won a Saltire Award in 1952 for best designed flats. Chairman of the Residents’ Association Tom Niven said: “The residents at Crathie Court decided it would be a good idea to mark the diamond jubilee of the flats in some way. The flats were very innovative in their day, being designed solely for ladies, and they went on to win a Saltire award. Over the last few years GHA has renovated all the flats and carried out environmental work in the grounds. There’s still a reasonably good community spirit in the flats too.”

AWARD FOR GLASGOW COMMUNITY SAFETY SERVICES

GLASGOW Community Safety Services (GCSS) has, along with Strathclyde Police, won a prestigious industry accolade at the recent IFSEC Security Industry 2012 Awards.Officers attended the ceremony, held in Birmingham, and picked up the Best Policing Partnership gong. Johann Watson, Head of Operations & Technology at GCSS, is extremely proud of her team and delighted that they have been recognised for their collaborative work with police colleagues. She said: “We are delighted to have this official recognition for the work we do with Strathclyde Police, to combat crime in the city and make local communities safer for the people who live there. “Everyone at GCSS is committed to making Glasgow a safer, cleaner and better place for people to live and work, and I would like to thank all our employees for contributing to this success.” Chief Superintendent Grant Manders, of

Strathclyde Police, said: “It is very pleasing for the strong partnership between Strathclyde Police and Glasgow Community and Safety Services to be recognised with this award. “It demonstrates that when organisations work together to keep people safe, great things can be achieved and we are very proud of all of the people who worked hard and brought this to life.” Judge and Event Coordinator Douglas Read said: “Glasgow Community and Safety Services represents the perfect liaison between a city council and the local police service aimed squarely at fighting crime and improving the environment for residents and businesses alike. “It’s a truly holistic partnership founded on an intelligence-led approach, covering everything from offender management through to antisocial behaviour, safer streets schemes and alcohol and drug rehabilitation programmes. Indeed, the sheer scope of the issues being addressed is hugely impressive.”

Local business consortium wins £9m repairs and maintenance contract

QUEENS Cross Housing Association, Glasgow, has awarded a new consortium of local businesses a repairs and maintenance contract worth around £9m over the next four years. Called P&D Scotland Ltd., the consortium’s 85 staff include plumbers, joiners, plasterers and electricians who will deal with an estimated 15,000 repairs and maintenance jobs each year to the Association’s 4,500 properties and many factored properties. They will also deliver close cleaning and environmental maintenance services. The contract is for two years initially with the provision to extend two further years. Louise Smith, Director of Property Services, led the contract tender process. She said: “By working through one local contractor, rather than a range of different suppliers, our tenants

should experience an improved and ultimately seamless service. “Working with one supplier will also free up the Association’s time to work on streamlining the customer experience and getting the job right first time. We’re delighted that the contract is staying in the area, supporting jobs and the local economy.” P&D Scotland Ltd will respond to tenants’ day to day requests for repairs, cleaning , gardening and environmental services. They will also deliver gas servicing, water hygiene and other specialist works such as checking fire alarms and emergency lighting systems. Peter Cairney, Managing Director of P&D Scotland Ltd., welcomed the start of the contract. He said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded this contract. “As a consortium of six local businesses,

we believe the contract will not only protect local employment and the local economy but will provide a platform for real partnership and co-operation between the public and private sectors. This will enable further opportunities for job creation and skills development in the local community”. “I want to thank Queens Cross Housing Association for their belief in our bid and look forward to a mutually successful partnership over the course of the contract”.

Views Sought on how Offenders can Payback for their CrimesGLASGOW is being asked on how offenders should be put to work to payback communities affected by crime.

Last year 174,000 hours of unpaid work was ordered to be undertaken by offenders who had been sentenced to a Community Payback Order in Glasgow. Work included shovelling snow, clearing parks of litter, repairing commu-nity facilities as well assisting indi-viduals and groups. But to ensure the greatest possible reparation for the harm caused by crime, Glasgow’s Community Justice Authority wants to hear sugges-tions from groups and individuals across the city on where unpaid work can make the biggest differ-ence. The Authority has already set the ball rolling by holding a consultation event with sixty dif-ferent community councils, faith groups and elected members, all of whom came forward with ideas on how can offenders can be best put to work.

Bailie Elaine McDougall, Con-venor of Glasgow’s Community Justice Authority, said the initial session had been very positive with many good suggestions being made, but so that public can see sentences are being served and that justice is being done, she believes it is vital as many groups and individuals offer their opinion on what work can be done through Community Payback

Orders. She told the Re-Gen, “The

Community Payback Order, and in particular unpaid work, is there to help communities. It is a real sentence, a punishment, and staff within Social Work, alongside those organisations which supervise work in the community, make sure it is a sentence. They also work with the offender to use the sentence to address prob-lems linked to their behaviour, to improve skills and where possible, improve employability, making it less likely that someone will reoffend.”

“I am not complacent and so I am pleased to open a public consultation on unpaid work. We want to hear from as many groups as possible on how we use unpaid work in Glasgow to improve our communities while making sure offenders know they have served a sentence. The people of Glasgow should get involved and express their views.” One community organisation that makes extensive use of offenders is Glasgow Easterhouse Support-ing Hands (GESH), which provides activities for disabled children and senior citizens among other things. Group chair Maureen Ferrie says GESH was able to refurbish its Garthamlock centre through people serving community sen-tences and they continue to con-tribute the upkeep of the much

used facility. Maureen said: “We just set them to work. There is no shortage of things to do around the centre. A lot of people use the centre and we have to make sure it is clean and tidy at all time. The people on community sentences really work and we keep them on their toes, that’s for sure. “But we also get folk like joiners and electricians coming to us as well and we always look to make use of their skills.” Working at the centre also has a positive impact on those who undertake their unpaid work with GESH.

Ex-offender Michael is now a volunteer with Greater Easterhouse Supporting Hands after serving his sentence under Maureen’s direction. He said “I

have served time in prison and had other sentences, but this time, by working in my community, things were different. It was worrying at first, but then I got involved and saw the difference my work made. I felt proud and was treated with respect for my efforts. After my Community Payback Order finished, I contin-ued volunteering and things are different in my life.” Community Payback Orders were introduced in February 2011 as part of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010 and as a replacement for the traditional Community Service sentence.

The CPO provides sentences with a range of options from which they can choose the most appropriate requirements. These include unpaid work or other activities, offender supervision requirement, compensation requirement, programme require-ment, mental health treatment requirement, drug treatment requirement, alcohol require-ment, residence requirement and conduct requirement. A sentence of unpaid work will be for between 20 and 300 hours and will need to be delivered within three to six months. In Glasgow sentenced offenders are managed by Glasgow City Council’s Social Work Services with unpaid work directly supervised by Glasgow Community and Safety Services, SACRO (Scottish Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders and GESH (Greater Easterhouse Supporting Hands). A proportion of offenders may also undertake unpaid work through individual placements, for instance helping out at lunch clubs or church groups, or in charity shops. Glasgow Criminal Justice Authority is one of eight similar authori-ties across Scotland and has the overall responsibility for planning, co-ordinating, monitoring and re-porting on criminal justice services in the city. Glasgow CJA aims to reduce re-offending, improve the management of offenders and create safer communities.

North East Glasgow Youth Health SummitsYOUNG people from third year classes in each Secondary school in North East took part in the recent School Health Summits Events during the month of June at Platform, The Bridge, Easterhouse.

The events allowed third year pupils to present their action plan on how to deal with a specific health issue raised in their school report in the latest School Health & Well Being Survey. Each school presented their ideas to a group of representatives from health services, education, Glasgow Life, and Glasgow Housing Assocaition among others at a Dragons Den style event. Each school pitched their idea to the dragons to gain support to take the work forward in partnership in the new school year; this support was monetary, staff support/time, or resources. Karen Gray, from the North East Sector Health Improvement Team of Glsgwo City Community Health Partnership was one of the dragons. She offered support to the pupils from All Saints Secondary School who wanted to raise awareness about the effects of second hand smoke.

schools included Exam stress by Bannerman High School, and Mental health by Lochend Secondary. All mainstream secondary schools within Glasgow city took part in the 2010 Health & Well Being Survey. This resulted in an area report and also school specific reports being generated and launched in December 2011. The aims of the 2010 Glasgow City Schools Health and Wellbeing Survey were to gather current demographic information on the pupil population (S1 - S4), gather trend data on key areas of health, and gain an understanding to individual pupil perceptions of their health & wellbeing.

The study primarily focused on health behaviours, personal factors and wider social and environmental issues that influence the health, perceptions and wellbeing of young people in Glasgow. Using comparisons from the first health study carried out three years ago, the new study, carried out in conjunction with the council and NHS Great Glasgow and Clyde, was used to form health summits in learning communities across the city.

Cannabis CultivationOFFICERS from ‘B’ division’s community policing teams are asking local residents to be vigilant as a number of cultivations have been found within properties in the local area. These sites often are at risk of fire due to electrical tampering. Your Housing provider will take action against any tenant found to have such a cultivation in their property. Many of these cultivations are linked to serious and organised crime groups. Their criminal activities threaten communities, businesses and jobs. They make profit from the misery of others. You can help us reduce the threat of serious and organised crime by telling us when you see anything suspicious. It’s often the little details that count, helping us to build up a picture of an individual or business.

ADVICE FOR THE PUBLIC

HOW TO SPOT CANNABIS CULTIVATIONS Some of the signs to look out for are:•The windows of the property are permanently covered from the inside, often with foil or bin bags. There may be a build up of condensation on the glass. •Pungent smells may emanate from the premises, or excessive use of air fresheners or moth balls to disguise the aroma. •Noise coming from equipment on the premises, eg fans or heaters. •There may be vents protruding through the

roof or rear windows. •The Cannabis or by-products, such as used fertiliser, may be removed in black bin bags, laundry bags or suitcases. •Tenants do not live on the premises and only make short visits, daily or weekly to maintain them. •Powerful lights on all day or night. •Compost bags or gardening equipment may be left outside the rear of the premises. •Visits to the premises can occur at unusual times of the day or night.

THE RISKS

Cannabis cultivations represent a direct threat to our communities.

Properties used to house Cannabis cultivations, and those near them, are exposed to a number of threats. The growing process requires a large amount of heaters, fans, and high voltage lamps and the amount of energy required increases the risk of electrical fire.

In addition, to reduce their costs and increase profits, criminals will divert the electrical supply, bypassing vital safety mechanisms, further increasing this risk.

Any information please contact; Strathclyde Police Tel: 0141 532 2000 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

Derelict Flats DangerCommunity Officers, Karen Quick and Lewis Owen were on cycle patrol in the Cadder area when they were called to a report of two youths having entered the derelict flats above the shops on Skirsa Street. This has been an ongoing issue for the police, residents and shop owners, as it poses not only an anti social behaviour issue, but a health and safety issue for any one entering these flats and the shops below them. Derelict flats are often the target of thieves who steal copper cable and piping, leaving the flats in a state of disrepair and dangerous. The officers attended immediately and secured the perimeter, before assistance arrived from response officers.A dog station was summoned but the officers managed to engage with the two youths and talked them out.

Housebreaking ArrestOn Tuesday afternoon PCs Ian Brogan and Laura Gray were called to a report of a male within the house of a well known offender in possession of knives, within the Robroyston area. They attended and found a 32 year old male hiding under a bed within. Despite finding no weapons the officers identified the male as being wanted for questioning regarding a theft by housebreaking and after finding goods that had been stolen during the theft in the male’s possession they arrested him for the housebreaking.

Stolen CarOn Friday 29th June, PC Laura Gray and Ian Brogan were at Tesco, Springburn when security staff pointed out a male shoplifter. The officers gave chase however the shoplifter entered a car which was being driven by another male which then made off from the officers. The constables followed the car which stopped at a set of red traffic light. As Constable Gray attempted to remove the male shoplifter from rear of the car, the driver sped off with the door still open, running over PC Gray’s foot. A short distance along the road, the vehicle stopped and the occupants bailed out. With assistance of other officers all of the occupants were caught and arrested. On conducting enquiries, it transpired the vehicle had been stolen from the Cambuslang area on the 26th of June.

Woman ArrestedFollowing a Robbery involving an 89 year old lady in St George’s Road which took place on Sunday 17th June. A 41 year old female has been arrested and is at present detained in custody prior to a court appearance. A report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Patricia Ferguson MSP Writes:I was fortunate to secure a debate in Parliament on the issue of the SNP Governments cuts to college budgets. During the debate I pointed out that North Glasgow College in my constituency has suffered almost £2million in the last two years. This has meant that 31 jobs have been lost equating to 500 years of experience. The cuts have led to a reduction in places at the college and mean that some young people have not been able to access the course they wanted to study. Sound and music production has been hit as well as plumbing and tourism. There are currently,12,700 young people aged 16 -24 unemployed in Glasgow. This of course, contrasts sharply with a promise made by the SNP Government that there would be a training opportunity, college or university place for every young person in Scotland. These are the very people who can help us work our way out of the recession but they are being denied the opportunity to do so. In my view you can judge a Government by the priorities that it sets and the choices that it makes and in terms of encouraging and supporting our young people into employment this Government has been found wanting and in recognising the value of college staff to our communities the Government has been found wanting and in its commitment to take young people out of unemployment the

Scottish Government has failed dramatically. Hard on the heels of cuts to the number of people employed in our colleges, recent workforce figures released by the NHS in Scotland indicate that there has been a reduction of

943 nurses and 2,154 NHS staff in the last 12 months. It is a about time that this SNP Government started protecting rather than cutting this vital service.

Climate challenge boost for Waste and Energy ProjectNorth Glasgow HA´s efforts to reduce carbon emissions have been boosted by a Scottish Government grant. The Association will received £292,635 for itsWaste and Energy Strategy project. It will be at the forefront of implementing change through recycling and re-use, energy saving, food growing and in the process, will change attitudesand behaviour to create a lasting legacy.Stewart Stevenson, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, praised North Glasgow H.A. and 20 other communities across the country that received grants for their support of Scotland’s ambitions to reduce carbon emissions. The 21 groups will share £2.9million for the next three years through the Climate Challenge Fund (CCF).The CCF helps communities

across Scotland to reduce their carbon footprint, supporting alow carbon lifestyle, and contributing to Scotland reaching its ambitious climate change target of reducing carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050.All applications are assessed by an Independent Grants Panel.Mr Stevenson said: “Climate change is one of the most serious threats we face as a global community and Scotland is leading the way in tackling the problem.“Importantly Scottish communities are playing their part, taking action to reduce their carbon footprint with support from our Climate ChallengeFund. Across the country, a further 21 exciting new projects will receive £2.9 million support, empowering more communities to realise their carbon saving potential.“CCF has captured the

imagination of our communities, producing many innovative ideasand projects to change behaviours and drivedown emissions. And that commitment from localcommunities - to tackle climate change from the grass-roots up - is essential if we are to succeed in delivering Scotland’s world leading and ambitiousclimate change targets.“The international leadership we are taking on sustainable development and low carbon economy is something we should all be proud of.”Pat Kenna, Chairperson of North Glasgow HA said: “We are delighted that the Scottish Government is supporting our Waste and Energy Strategy. This funding will help the association reduce its carbon footprint and it will go a long way towards changing attitudes towards recycling in North Glasgow.”

Summer Safety Tips for KidsNOW that the school holidays have started many of our kids will discover a new “Freedom” which they have never experienced before.

Unfortunately with this “Freedom” comes some dangers and what we want to do here is just to reinforce a few things that may help.

1) Water is a Magnet to children. Even if the kids can swim, Make sure they

know about the dangers that potential swimming areas such as local ponds, rivers, quarries and the like, can hold for them and warn them against going to these places.

2) Old Buildings are Dangerous.

In the North area there are still many old buildings and kids love to explore these. One it’s probably against the law to even be on the site (but try telling that to, 11, 12, 13 years) and two, these buildings can collapse at any time. Kids can get trapped inside these

and often help is not at hand until it’s too late. If there are any old sites in your area Make sure you warn the children not to venture there.

3) Kids love to set off for picnics. On a warm hot sunny day kids love nothing more than making up sandwiches, getting a couple of bottles of ginger and setting out for a picnic. Nothing wrong with this as long as they been well warned about not talking to strangers, not getting into strange cars, not being compromised by any seemingly “Nice” men (or Women for that matter). If they feel they are being pressured into doing something they feel uncomfortable with then don’t be afraid to tell them to SCREAM their loudest and Run away to someone in authority. It may be something quite innocent but BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.

4) Fountains Of Fun.

Fire Hydrants are always a draw for kids and what amazes us is that “Parents” laugh and say what real problem are they causing by playing under the torrent of water cascading from the Hydrants. The Problems are, 1) Broken Bones as the force of the water is unbelievable and 2) The water is needed for emergencies which could happen right on your door-step. How would you feel if a neighbour’s house caught fire and no water could be

obtained due to the kids “Having Fun”. Put a STOP to this practice as soon as you realise it is happening, it could save a life.

5) Fields of Fire.

Kids with Matches and Lighters sneaking a fly smoke can end up setting fire to dry grass as the summer sun dries out acres of farmland. Not only can children be trapped and panic the damage this can cause can be very costly. It can also cause accidents as the smoke billows across roads, drivers

can’t see clearly and crashes can occur. So check to see if your kid has access to Lighters or Matches and once again let them know of the dangers. In Short BE A RESPONSIBLE PARENT. It is your duty to look after your children, not someone else’s.

If an accident occurs over the holiday period (and unfortunately they do) hopefully you have played your part in keeping our child safe.

Don’t leave it too late and regret it for ever.

STRATHCLYDE Police are at

present running “Operation

Neptune” which is a month long

campaign of action, more robust

than ever and aimed at making

our streets safer.

Chief Inspector Tom Dickson,

who is the area commander for

the Maryhill and Kelvin sub-

division has hailed the operation

as a great success to date and he

told the Re-Gen this week, “ The

commitment of our officers and

partner agencies during Operation

Neptune have produced some

terrific results for our communi-

ties.” The additional focus of

“Neptune” leads on from the

success of operation “Mosaic”

that targeted known offend-

ers within the community and

reduced the levels of violence

and disorder in the area. “Nep-

tune” is a diverse operation

covering issues such as youth

disorder, road safety,drugs and or-

ganised crime. Over 50 focused

policing operations have been

carried out to date with nearly

3000 people being stopped and

searched. Almost 500 of these

being positive. 278 people

have been reported for various

offences in the sub-division since

the start of the operation. This

includes 51 drugs offences includ-

ing , 5 charges of housebreaking,

2 arrests under the firearms act,

8 vehicles seized and 115 Anti-

social behaviour conditional offer

notices issued for street drinking,

urinating and disorder offences.

Last weekend 4000 valium

tablets were seized from an

address in Maryhill, with one

person arrested for drug dealing.

Another “Neptune” operation

resulted in thearrest of a male un-

der the immigration act who was

in possession of a largequantity

of counterfeit cigarettes.

Chief Inspector Dickson added “

We have been listening to the resi-

dents in our communities and the

operations we have carried out

have been directly linked to their

concerns. Our job is to help people

feel secure and safe in these com-

munities and robustly target those

involved in disorder and violent

crime. That is our priority”

“Operation Neptune” continues

until the end of April.

SPECIAL OFFERS

“Y” People Fears for

Asylum SeekersALARM has been spreading

throughout the asylum seekers

community in the Red Road flats

following an announcement from

Nicola Sturgeon that no direct help

will be available for the hundreds

of families facing destitution after

the contract by Y People to house

asylum seekers was lost.

In a reply to local MSP Sandra

White who asked what discussions

the Scottish Government has had

regarding providing assistance for

those facing homelessness fol-

lowing the withdrawal of accom-

modation and support services, Ms

Sturgeon told MSP Sandra White

it was a matter for the UK Border

Agency and the UK Government.

She stated that, “If Asylum

Seekers are not adequately and

properly supported then obviously

that often has a knock-on effect

to agencies operating in devolved

areas of responsibility. The Scottish

Government will continue to seek

assurances from the UK Govern-

ment that all action that is appro-

priate will be taken in this area.”

The Deputy First Minister added

that it was in no one’s interest to

see Asylum Seekers destitute. Ms

White stated that “The Scottish

Government has to step in and do

something. If Glasgow City Council

has to provide services then

Holyrood can help with costs and

work together so we don’t allow

people to be out on the street with

no food.”

This situation has arisen since Y

People lost the contract to Serco

and now the assistance that Y Peo-

ple provided in getting clothes and

food for these vulnerable people

will cease as this was not writ-

ten into any contracts. It was out

of the goodness of the hearts of

those in Y People that these people

who had basically come to the end

of their tether had at least some

sort of support. Local MP Willie

Bain and MSP Patricia Ferguson

met with Home Secretary Damian

Green recently in London to see

what could be done in this situation

but they found the meeting with

the minister very unproductive and

unsatisfactory.

On every question we asked said

Ms Ferguson he threw back the

UK Government’s policy on the

matter and didn’t seem to realise

the urgency of the plight of the

Asylum Seekers. Glasgow City

Council and Y People are continu-

ing to work together but there is a

limit to what they can do legally in

the situation.

Ms Ferguson told the Re-Gen

that they were doing everything

they could to help but this is a

problem that will not go away and

could result in continuing upset for

not only the 83 people who are at

present affected but also lots more

over the next 5 years. Last word

to Patricia Ferguson MSP who

told the paper, “Home Secretary

Damian Green didn’t come up with

anything or even acknowledge or

offer any sort of solution. Let’s

hope some sort of meaningful

discussions can take place soon as

this is people’s lives we are deal-

ing with here.”

Parliamentary PatterFORGED £20 NOTES ALERT

SHOPKEEPERS and Residents in

North Glasgow are being warned to

look out for a batch of forged £20

notes circulating in the Springburn /

Robroyston areas. Fraudsters are targeting shops in

these areas and buying goods using

fake Clydesdale Bank £20 notes

which are worthless when discovered,

leaving the shop assistants, in

some cases, to fork out their own

hard earned cash to make up the

shortfall. All the notes so far have

the serial numbers AD2586899 or

ADT671854. Not only do a batch

of fake notes cause havoc with the

day-to-day running of businesses they

also can affect ordinary people’s lives

as the difference between someone

receiving one of these notes can be

heartbreaking especially if it is the

only cash they have to either run a

household or pay a bill. Most shops

nowadays have specialised equipment

to detect forgeries but every now and

again these fake notes slip through

the system and it is only when they

are in your possession that they are

discovered. Banks are instructed

to retain forgeries but they do not

recompense anyone handing one

in and needless to say it is usually

the ordinary punter who bears the

brunt of such transactions. Criminal

gangs involved in the practice of

churning out the fake notes are the

same people who will attempt to

flood the streets with fake goods of

all sorts ranging from sports leisure

wear through to cd’s and even tea

bags and cigarettes. They don’t

give a monkey’s about the ordinary

people who just try to get on with

life, as long as they have the cash

to fund their empires. Strathclyde

Police have launched an investigation

into these latest incidents and a

spokesperson told the Re-Gen, “We

are studying closed-circuit television

footage in an effort to help track

down the fraudsters. We would urge people, in particular

shop staff, to be extra vigilant.”

Anyone with any information is asked

to call the police on 0141 532 2000.

Genuine Clydesdale Bank Notes have

a watermark which is hardly visible

until held up to light, each note also

has an individual serial number and

florescent features which show up

when exposed to ultraviolet light. The

special paper notes are made from

feels rough and there is a metallic

thread which appears as silver dashes

but when held up to the light appears

as a continuous dark line. Be patient if shopkeepers check your

note when handed over and on the

other side of the coin, (excuse the

pun), you make sure you’re not being

palmed off with a worthless piece of

paper when dealing with money.

City Building apprentices ‘score’ Junior Football title

PAUL Sweeney and Jason Elliott – apprentices with one of Scotland’s leading construction firms – triumphed at the Evening Times Winners Cup recently. The two rising stars – who work for Glasgow City Council’s arm’s length construction company, City Building – helped their team Ashfield FC towards victory in the prestigious tournament which took place at Newlandsfield Park in Pollok. The Evening Times Cup Winners Cup Final features the winners of the ten West Region competitions during the preceding season. Ashfield FC – one of the oldest Scottish Junior Football Clubs in Scotland – won 1 – 0 in a hotly contested match against Irvine Meadow. Paul and Jason, both 19, were selected for the team by Stevie Rankin, City Building’s electrical manager and Ashfield Juniors manager, after their strong performance during City Building’s Commonwealth Cup Tournament last year. Paul is currently in the 4th year of a joinery apprenticeship with City Building, while Jason is in the 2nd year of his plumbing apprenticeship. Stevie said: “Paul and Jason are both very talented apprentices and football players with a bright future ahead of them. They did Ashfield FC proud in the Evening

Times Winners Cup and I look forward to seeing them continue to shine in our upcoming games.” Cllr Paul Carey, chair of City Building, said: “This is a great achievement for Paul, Jason and their Ashfield FC teammates. Since starting their apprenticeships with City Building we have been very impressed with their hard work and

dedication.” City Building acting Managing Director Graham Paterson said: “We are committed to helping our apprentices gain the experience and knowledge required to excel in their trade.
