Fraudsters are targeting shops in these areas and buying goods using fake Clydesdale Bank £20 notes which are worthless when discovered, leaving the shop assistants, in some cases, to fork out their own hard earned cash to make up the shortfall. All the notes so far have the serial numbers AD2586899 or ADT671854. Not only do a batch of fake notes cause havoc with the day-to-day running of businesses they also can affect ordinary people’s lives as the difference between someone receiving one of these notes can be heartbreaking especially if it is the only cash they have to either run a household or pay a bill. Most shops nowadays have specialised equipment to detect forgeries but every now and again these fake notes slip through the system and it is only when they are in your possession that they are discovered. Banks are instructed to retain forgeries but they do not recompense anyone handing one in and needless to say it is usually the ordinary punter who bears the brunt of such transactions. Criminal gangs involved in the practice of churning out the fake notes are the same people who will attempt to flood the streets with fake goods of all sorts ranging from sports leisure wear through to cd’s and even tea bags and cigarettes. They don’t give a monkey’s about the ordinary people who just try to get on with life, as long as they have the cash to fund their empires. Strathclyde Police have launched an investigation into these latest incidents and a spokesperson told the Re-Gen, “We are studying closed-circuit television footage in an effort to help track down the fraudsters. We would urge people, in particular shop staff, to be extra vigilant.” Anyone with any information is asked to call the police on 0141 532 2000. Genuine Clydesdale Bank Notes have a watermark which is hardly visible until held up to light, each note also has an individual serial number and florescent features which show up when exposed to ultraviolet light. The special paper notes are made from feels rough and there is a metallic thread which appears as silver dashes but when held up to the light appears as a continuous dark line. Be patient if shopkeepers check your note when handed over and on the other side of the coin, (excuse the pun), you make sure you’re not being palmed off with a worthless piece of paper when dealing with money. New Tea Room Opens in Botanical GardensTHE Tea Room at the Botanical Gardens, the first-ever sit in cafe based in the historic former Curator’s House at the Botanic Gardens, officially opened its doors to the public this week. To mark the occasion, Councillor Jim Coleman, Glasgow City Coun-cil’s executive member for Land and Environmental Services, of-ficially declared the venue open for business. The Tea Room at the Botanics, which will open seven days per week from 10am to 6pm during the summer, is divided into two separate areas. The venue is also available after 6pm for private functions and will operate extended opening hours during the West End Festi-val and the Bard in the Botan-ics season. The venue, which features views of the Botanic Gardens’ stunning Kibble Palace, includes al fresco dining options thanks to a new expansive patio area. The Tea Room will also showcase artwork by Glasgow-based artists in both rooms on a monthly basis. The inaugural exhibition to be housed in the tea rooms features the works of cel-ebrated self-taught Glaswegian artist Allan Richardson, who also works for Glasgow City Council’s Land and Environmental Services division. Many of Allan’s works, including his famed depiction of The University Cafe, are west end based and inspired. A poetry

post-box is also stationed in the patio area of the tea room, which will be used to collect poems from children to be displayed throughout the building. The Tea Room has ample room to cater for 44 people across both the Paeonia Parlour and the Rowan Retreat. The patio area has a 60-cover capacity. The Tea Rooms menu itself makes reference to the prem-ises’ historical significance by highlighting one of Scotland’s most infamous murder cases. On March 23, 1857, Pierre L’Angelier, a seed merchant from the Chan-nel Islands was found dead. He was staying with the then curator of the Botanic Gardens as a guest in the house where tea room is now housed. L’Angelier began an affair with Glasgow so-

cialite Madeline Smith, who was later accused of poisoning him by cocoa laced with arsenic and stood trial. She was sensationally acquitted and fled Scotland due to the notoriety generated by the case and the verdict. The Curator’s House, where The Tea Room in the Botanics is based, is one of the earliest designs by Glaswegian architect Charles Wilson, who was also responsible for many of the city’s listed buildings including Glasgow Royal Exchange and Park Circus. Councillor Jim Coleman, said: “The Tea Room at The Botan-ics is a fantastic addition to one of Scotland’s best loved parks. I’m confident that it will quickly become one of the city’s most popular venues given the stun-ning surroundings it enjoys.”

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice.

Red Road multi-storey flats demolition goes with a bangTHOUSANDS of people gathered recently to watch the demolition of a multi-storey block of flats at Red Road in the North of Glasgow. A triple-block of GHA flats at 153-213

Petershill Drive was blown down in a controlled explosion. The demolition is part of regeneration plans by GHA, and partners, to transform communi-ties across the city.

Many of the former tenants of the flats were rehoused locally in one of the 259 new-build homes built by GHA. Others residents moved into new or upgraded GHA homes across the city or other social landlords’ new homes. Since GHA was formed in 2003, Scotland’s largest social landlord has invested more than £1.1 billion in refurbishing, modernising and improving homes across the city. GHA has also completed 791 new-build homes across Glasgow. GHA’s Executive Director of Development and Regeneration, Alex McGuire, said: “We are working closely with our partners to make Glasgow a great place to live and create communities people are proud to live in. “The Red Road flats were popular in their day and are known around the world, but their time has come to an end. We’re pleased the demolition of the first of the Red Road blocks went according to plan.” The remaining seven multi-storeys in the area are to be demol-

ished by 2017. As final preparations for the demolition got under way, Red Road was trending on Twitter with tweets from hundreds of people including Still Game star Greg Hempill, actor Colin McCredie and comedian and writer Robert Florence. Due to the unique steel-frame structure of the flats, the bottom storeys of the block remained – as planned - un-disturbed after the blowdown. The remaining storeys will be demolished using machines. Around 2,000 people were tem-porarily evacuated from their homes with many of the local residents staying with family or friends or visiting the evacuation centre at All Saints Secondary School. Approxi-mately around 275 kilos of explosives were used to bring down the triple block. The clear-up operation will take several months to complete with the steel removed and recycled and the remaining rubble crushed and used as foundations for roads and build-

ings. William Sinclair, Managing Director of demolition contractors Safedem, said: “The Red Road flats have pre-sented a unique series of challenges ranging from the size of the buildings to the steel frame struc-ture. “We’re delighted to be involved in another successful demolition operation working with GHA – our 17th demoli-tion we’ve carried out with GHA since 2005.”

June is a month for expansion and growth of your mind and new contacts it will be a month of interactions. There’ll be new information, new people but don’t neglect those old friends whom you have not seen in some time, so try to put that are of your life in order too. Life will begin to take off after the 11th as the lucky planet Jupiter moves into your sign.

June is a month to look within and also to look after your own needs instead of others! A time to expand ideas and to capitalise on investments, remember that the universe works with the law of attraction so visualize your dreams becoming reality and it will be so!

I always look at birthday months as a new year and a new you and this is what is happening in your sign as Jupiter enters your sign your optimism and foresight kicks in and you start a new cycle of luck and hope, you are closing some doors on the past but pushing new ones open with gusto, enjoy and embrace all new beginnings.

Insecurities must not hold you back right now as it is important to embrace the changes that are coming the planet Uranus is making us all look at change and you are no different, be bold be honest in all your endeavors and allow that ambition to succeed in all areas of your live drive you to change and victory..

A Magical time is unfolding before your feet; it is almost as if the universe has put you on center stage (again). You will see an increase in your financial house and your love life comes into the fore as you either plan to lasso a man or to entice your current partner deeper into your lay, a month of moving and shaking away debris.

Around the time of the partial eclipse in Sagittarius you may feel that it is time to repair any problems on the home front, and you will be right it is an ideal time to let bygones be bygones and rebuild and repair lost or bad feeling to do with friends and family, this will allow you to focus fully on your goal, work and finances, you feel confident and your virgonian charm helps you achieve real progress forward and with mars in your sign there is no stopping you.

Venus your ruling planet is retrograde for most of this month so it is a time to deal with practical matters. You may have been a lit bit of a hermit of late but with the move of Jupiter into your sister sign of Gemini and the new moon on the 19th you feel a sense of clearing and a need to get back out and communicate with the world.

There is a touch of destiny in your sign this month as you are being pushed forward to claim success and victory in all aspects of your life, not one who fears change this month finds you opening up new doors and then further new door waiting, don’t be shy, go forward, embrace and enjoy.

You have a choice this month, live in a world of fantasy and sexual relations or get practical and make headway in your working and financial life. It is time to understand relationships personal and business a month for you to see and all others to see what you are truly about, take stock, think and move wisely.

You cannot be faulted for your efforts and work ethics in fact if this gave you brownie points you would be at the top of the ladder of success, this month you take responsibilities seriously and with efficiency you drive yourself forward to the finishing line. A month when your attention to detail and drive get you noticed in more ways than one!

A time to cast away fear and doubt, a time to begin to believe in yourself and your abilities, a time of communication of thoughts feelings and ideas, all of these things you find difficult (normally) but this month it is important to push yourself in these areas and you will fell lighter and happier than you have been in some time. !

You seem to be focused on your home this month with a lot of emphasis on making it feel safer, some might decorate, some of you might move and decide to buy or sell you have a desire to nurture your inner self and the planet venus retrograde is the causing this effect, try to keep a balance on your home life and go with the flow as this phase will pass.

Sizzling Suzie’s Summer Spreads

One of the best things about going on holiday, I think, is coming back. Ok so you guys probably had as nice a weather as we had in Portugal, but hey…we were lying by a pool being waited on hand and foot into the bargain. The wean had an absolute ball. Not once did he get bored of pushing me or his daddy into the pool. Or anyone else for that matter. The food was absolutely delicious and as usual I have come home with a few new recipes. It pays to chat up the chef. Although this stew requires you to prepare it the night before it really is worth it.

Butter bean and Pork Stew

500g pack of butterbeans soaked overnight.1 kilo of pork belly with skin removed.3 cloves of garlic crushed1 small pack of smoked bacon lardoons2 bay leaves1 glass of good red wineTbsp dried thyme2 tsp harissa paste….(you will find it in the herd and spice aisle)1 ½ pints of vegetable stock1 packet of shredded curly kale or strong greens1 tsp of olive oil

Marinade your pork overnight in the wine, garlic and bay leaves. Remove meat from marinade and fry off in the olive oil until browned and sealed. In a heavy lidded pan add the meat with the marinade and cook very slowly for about 1 ½ hours to 2 hours or until it is very tender. Fry the lardons until browned and add to the meat with the drained beans, harissa and stock. Cook for a further 40-50 minutes until the beans are tender. Add the kale and cook for a further 20 min. Remove the meat and allow it to rest for 10 minutes before shredding it using two forks. Pour the beans and cabbage into a bowl and top with the shredded meat.

Fresh Sardine Salad

You can use fresh sardines or tinned if you prefer but works with tuna too’

4 fresh sardines gutted and grilled1 small pack of feta cheese cubed1 small onion diced2 small tomatoes cubed with juice and seeds removed1 pinch of cumin2 boiled potatoes cubed2 tbsp of French dressing

Combine all the ingredients and serve with toasted ciabbatta bread

Baked Custard

Custard powder made as per instructions2 tbsp of caramel sauce

Pour the caramel in a shallow dish and place in a hot oven for 5-6 min until liquid and golden. Pour over the custard mix and bake for 10 - 15 min until properly set and golden. Allow to cool completely and chill in the fridge. Turn out onto a plate and serve in thick slices. No need for anything else.

Have a great weekend everyone and here’s hoping the sun shines.

Love Susie x

GLASGOW UNVEILS VISION FOR 2018 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMESYOUNG people this week unveiled the bold vision behind Glasgow’s bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, launching the ‘Be a Champion in Your Life’ campaign with a spectacular show.In a world-first, Glasgow’s candidature for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games was launched in style by young people at the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Young sports stars joined other performers to unveil details of Glasgow’s Bid. Dame Kelly Holmes, double Olympic gold medallist, joined the young people to back Glasgow’s Bid and talk about her own personal champion moments. Glasgow 2018 is seeking to capitalise on the opportunities created by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, as well as the city’s ongoing international sporting events programme. Glasgow 2018 would be a tangible legacy for these major events, and a powerful catalyst for the next phase in the UK’s journey with the Olympic Movement by empowering young people to become champions in their lives. The Bid is a strong partnership between the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and the British Olympic Association (BOA) and has the full and active support of government at all levels. Young people have already played a vital role in the development of the ‘Be a Champion in Your Life’ campaign. Glasgow is already home to the largest youth employability scheme of its kind in the UK, the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative, which has placed more than 2,000 young people in training. And through its twinning programme Glasgow has linked every school in the city with young people in every region of the Commonwealth. The Leader

of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Gordon Matheson, said: “Glasgow is already known the world over as a great sporting city because of our proud track record of hosting international events and investing in world-class sports infrastructure. Hosting the 2018 Youth Olympic Games would be a new success story for our city and one that we are determined to capitalise on. “Young people are at the very heart of our Bid and will be our strongest voice as we go all out to bring the Youth Olympic Games to these shores for the first time. A successful campaign would continue the legacy created by the London 2012 Olympic Games and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, helping us continue to work hard together with young people to help them build the bright future they deserve.” Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison, said: “The official launch of Glasgow’s bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games showcases the best creative and sporting talent from

Glasgow, Scotland and the UK and brings the city’s vision for 2018 to life. This launch is unique in being hosted and delivered entirely by young people – they are at the very heart of Glasgow’s vision. Glasgow’s track record of hosting international sporting events as well as its passion and commitment to young people make it an excellent host city for the young athletes of the world as they strive towards their own personal Olympic dreams. Double Olympic Games gold medallist Dame Kelly Homes told the Re-Gen: “Any athlete who’s ever competed in Glasgow will tell you – this is a very special sports city. A Youth Olympics here would be an incredible way to kick-start the careers of the next generation of young athletes. They’ve got world-class facilities, a great history of hosting top sports events, and some of the most passionate fans on the planet. Glasgow 2018 is in a great position to make a real contribution to the future of the Olympic Movement.”

Margaret and Conor Go that Extra MileMANY of you in the area would have taken part in the “Healthy Living” 5K Fun Run which took place recently but how many of you raised cash for good causes? Well Margaret Laidlaw, (who works in the Beers, Wines and Spirits department at Asda superstore in Maryhill) and her grandson, young Conor both ran for the Autistic Society and they raised the fantastic total of £200-00. In the picture you can see the two of them setting out on the run (Margaret has No. 967 and young Conor is holding her hand in case she gets lost). Congratulations to both of them in raising cash for such a deserving charity.

LAST CALL FOR GHA APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME

TIME is running out for school leavers in Glasgow to sign up for a place on GHA’s Modern Apprenticeship Programme.GHA is looking to give another 30 young people their first start on the career ladder. The youngsters will be recruited through GHA’s Modern Apprenticeship Programme which is part of Glasgow City Council’s Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative. The deadline for applications

is 22 June.To apply for an apprenticeship, applicants need to register online at the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative site: http://glasgow.mappit.org.ukThis year there are two different styles of programme available, both giving youngsters on-the-job experience and a qualification. For school leavers who like working outdoors, there’s a two-year course which will see the apprentices

join GHA’s Neighbourhood Environmental Teams to help keep communities clean and tidy. It will lead to a SVQ Level 2 qualification in Facilities Services. The second option is for office-based roles which will see apprentices work in one of GHA’s local offices, area teams or head office for two years. This will lead to a SVQ Level 2 and 3 qualification in Business Administration.GHA’s 2009 programme saw 21 out of 30 apprentices securing jobs at GHA.

Another 30 youngsters are currently working in GHA offices across the city after signing up for the 2011 scheme.Modern Apprentice Robyn Lang said: “I would definitely urge anyone to sign up. I never thought I would want to work in housing before, but you are making such a difference to people’s lives. Joining the programme has been one of the best things I’ve ever done.”If you attended a Glasgow school, are aged 16-19, and left either at Christmas last year or will leave in summer 2012 you are eligible.

Jewellery and Art on show at North Glasgow College

THIS week North Glasgow College’s Art and Jewellery section celebrated the success of the students on these unique programmes. The spectacular work produced is a tribute to the students application and skills and to the dedication and expertise of the lecture staff they draw on for ideas, direction and technical development throughout their courses. The standard of work produced by the jewellery degree students is recognised as being exemplary in the sector and indeed within the industry network, of which the college can boast being an integral part. The exhibition also showpieces the fact that the variety of work on show is often developed by use of the latest technology allied to a grounding in sound bench skills and more classic design methodology. Given the acclaim already gained, throughout the session, by the students on the programme, from their peers, teaching staff and external agencies, it is anticipated that Introduction Class of 2011-2012 visitors to the show cannot fail to be impressed by the quality,

creativity and hard work of the exhibitors. Ronnie Knox, Principal/Chief Executive, said, “ I am absolutely delighted and inspired by the partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University in jointly providing a seamless articulation pathway to degree level. The programme gives such an opportunity for our students to remain on campus and progress as University Graduates. The Qualifications are modern, meet industry needs and are recognised by other higher education institutions as an excellent pathway onto many Masters Degrees.” The course is going from strength to strength and last year there was an enviable pass rate and 20% of the graduates achieved a 1st Class Degree. It’s fully expected there will be another successful and impressive set of results from our current cohort. Michelle Fraser, of Leeds Metropolitan University stated, “I am delighted to support the Degree Shows at North Glasgow College as they provide an opportunity for the graduating students to showcase their talent,

creativity and success during what is a very intensive year of study. I believe it is a fitting way to mark their achievements, skill and professionalism. Congratulations to those exhibiting and to the staff who have supported them during their studies. I wish this year’s presenting students every success, both with the show and with their future endeavours.” One senior student Lillian Docherty-Wightman who is displaying some of her excellent work at the college, travels from Linlithgow to North Glasgow college daily such is the tremendous course offered at the college. The Jewellery exhibition will be at the Repositioned Gallery, 1203 Argyle Street from Thursday 28 June – Saturday 30 June 2012. The Art Show will be at the Concurrent exhibition, Scion House, Stirling University Innovation Park, Stirling, FK94NF from Monday 25 June – 14 July 2012 and at the Kelly Gallery, 118 Douglas Street, Glasgow G2 4ET from Tuesday 7 – 18 August 2012.

PROFESSOR Joe Goldblatt, (Queen Margaret’s University) one of the World’s leading experts in Event Management was so impressed with a new training programme in Springburn that he wanted to see it for himself and meet the students.

The totally free training and volunteering programme, kicked off last week in North Glasgow Housing Association’s Training Academy in Springburn and the course provides young people from local schools with the opportunity to achieve a Volunteer Skills Award SCGQ Level 3/4 and 5.

Professor Goldblatt met the students and gave a presentation on volunteering for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The Professor, who has delivered events for 2 US Presidents said: “I think this is a fantastic idea

that North Glasgow Housing Association has come up with. The events industry can provide an amazing career for young people. Every day is different, you have to be creative, you have to think on your feet. A career in events management can let you see the world, meet lots of different people, experience many different cultures. I was really impressed with the young people I met in Springburn and I have no doubt they will be successful in their chosen careers.”

Prof. Goldblatt often mentions the WOW factor when talking of events and the young people provided that WOW factor by presenting him with cupcakes and an engraved gift as he had recently celebrated a special birthday. He said: “I was totally overwhelmed that the students

would pay that much attention to detail, it was very thoughtful of them and the cupcakes were great!”

The Professor personally signed and presented all the students with copies of his latest book: Special Events – A New Generation and the Next Frontier. Connor Gibson was inspired by Professor Goldblatt and said: “Joe’s presentation was really inspiring. It was great to see all the different events that we could be a part of.” CEO of North Glasgow HA Robert Tamburrini said: “We are deeply honoured that a world expert on event management would take time out from his busy schedule to meet with the students and support our programme, I’d like to thank Professor Goldblatt for coming to North Glasgow and I’m delighted he enjoyed his visit”.

Events Co-ordinator at North Glasgow, Arlene Rush said: “Events is an exciting field to

work in, especially for young people who are full of ideas and enthusiasm. Professor

Goldblatt’s passion for this events and volunteering programme has definitely rubbed off on the students”.

The project is backed by Glasgow City Council who have accepted it as part of the Commonwealth Games Legacy for Glasgow and Cllr. Archie Graham, Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games (Glasgow City Council,) said: “I am delighted that this scheme has been given Legacy programme status. Event Management skills will be very much in demand in Scotland in the future - not least at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games - and such schemes are examples of how preparing for the Games will leave the city better off economically and socially. I would like to congratulate North Glasgow Housing Association for providing this opportunity for young people in this part of Glasgow.”

The young students will go on and gain practical experience at a major community event in North Glasgow this summer.

ASHFIELD won the Evening Times Cup Winners Cup on Thursday night defeating Irvine Meadow 1-0 in a hard-fought match at Newlandsfield Park, Pollok. It was third time lucky for the team from North Glasgow having lost out narrowly to Clydebank and Irvine Meadow in previous finals this season. This time it was Ashfield`s night as Manager Stevie Rankin and his coaching staff readied a much-changed side for one last effort this season. The match was settled by Mark Thomson`s 24th goal of the season scoring from the penalty spot in the 10th Minute. A delighted Stevie Rankin said after the game: It’s great to finish the season on a high. I’m elated for the team, my coaches, my backroom staff and our supporters. We deserved this; we’ve played well in other finals this season and not got the win so this is long-overdue. Asked about the penalty that won the cup for Ashfield Stevie said: It

was a definite penalty and we maybe should have had another near the end of the game” Stevie also had a word for North Glasgow Housing Association, one of Ashfield’s local partners: “North Glasgow Housing Association have been great with us. They’ve supported us all season and it’s nice to reward them and all our supporters with some silverware” Head of Regeneration at North Glasgow H.A. John Devine said: “It was a perfect evening for football and it was great to see Ashfield lift the cup. At North Glasgow we want to provide better sport and health outcomes for our communities. Chief Executive Officer of North Glasgow H.A. Robert Tamburrini said: “It’s our vision to create a new North Glasgow: a great place to live. Health and wellbeing are key strands of that vision. Along with our partners we are creating sporting opportunities for young people in our community”

OFFICERS from Strathclyde Police have been working alongside Maryhill Housing Association, Glasgow Community and Safety Services and North United Communities to deal with underage drinking and the anti-social behaviour in the Ruchill area of Glasgow. With the assistance of the Police Motorcycle Unit, Gangs Taskforce and Mounted officers, working with officers from Saracen Community Policing Team 31 arrests have been made.Joint visits between Police and local Housing Associations have been made to the households of people engaging in antisocial behaviour and warned of the consequences of continuing to do so.Ruchill Community Centre and North United Communities have also organised additional youth activities in the area and local young people are being encouraged to attend these organised activities. Leaflets have been delivered to residents around Ruchill Park to keep people up to date with progress as well as updates on Strathclyde Police Facebook and Twitter social networking sites.Local Police Area Commander Ann Hughes stated “This behaviour simply will not be tolerated. As part of my personal commitment to keeping the residents of

Maryhill, Kelvin and Canal safe people committing antisocial behaviour can expect a visit from Strathclyde Police. Already we have removed a number of offensive weapons from the streets around Ruchill Park resulting in 4 people being arrested and appearing at court. “Understandably, as young people grow they are given more freedom and tend to be out and about with their friends in the evenings and at weekends. The vast majority are able to pass their time in a positive way and never expose themselves to harm. But there are others who will seek out alcohol and whether they drink to excess or not, the fact they are under the influence of alcohol can lead to their becoming involved in anti-social and criminal behaviour. Furthermore, their alcohol consumption can lead to immediate and long-term health issues.”“I urge anyone in the area who has concerns or any information to contact the local community policing team on 0141 532 3737 or by email [email protected] or for regular updates follow Inspector Craig Smith on Twitter @strathpol36”.

STRATHCLYDE Police this week Launched a “Don’t Hate Me” campaign to raise awareness of hate crime and encourage victims or witnesses to report these crimes to police.Everyone in our community has the right to live safely and without fear. We need your support to tackle hate crime so if you or someone you know is a victim, report it to us. People often don’t understand what hate crime is and how

devastating it can be for victims and their families. It’s best described as any criminal offence committed against an individual or property that’s motivated by a person’s hatred ofsomeone because of their: Race, Religion, Gender identity, Sexual orientation or - Disability. Check out the Strathclyde Police Web-site on www.strathclyde.police.uk for further information.

I have mentioned before my concern about the amount of funding being cut from the budgets of our local colleges and I make no apology for doing so again.

In 2011-12 the Scottish Government cut North Glasgow College’s budget by £1m and I know how hard the management and staff had to work to try to continue to

deliver their usual excellent level of education and training to our young people. This year the college’s budget has been cut by a further £823,000 and once again the range of courses is having to be reviewed as the College struggles to make ends meet. It seems to me that these cuts are short sighted and wrong. At a time when youth unemployment is so high

we should be giving our young people every opportunity to

gain the knowledge and skills they will need if they are to find productive employment. In addition it is precisely these skills which will help our country to work its way out of recession.

At this time of the year my diary is busier than usual with Gala Days and Fun Days and School Concerts. No matter

what the weather may be like it is always a pleasure to be able to support local communities and organisations who give up so much of their time and effort to make these events such a success. I take my hat off to each and every one of them for all their hard work.

It was a pleasure to be in George Square on Friday 8th June to welcome the Olympic Torch to Glasgow. Thousands of Glaswegians turned out for this event

and the atmosphere was electric. On the following morning, the torch made its away along Maryhill Road and I was delighted to see so many families and individuals lining the streets and waving from windows as the torch made its way from Queen Margaret Drive onto Maryhill Road at 7.45

am – it was a great start to the day!

Only positive arguments for independenceThe debate over Scotland’s constitutional future stepped up a gear with the recent launch of the Yes Scotland campaign. The speakers were from various political parties and of none, highlighting the breadth of support in Scotland for independence. The people who care most about our country are the people who live here, and it follows that it is these people who are best placed to make the decisions about Scotland’s future. Scotland has rich natural resources, including huge renewable energy potential

and a plentiful water supply, and our exports of whisky and high quality food are enjoyed throughout the world. Recent statistics demonstrate we would have the 5th highest GDP in Europe, well ahead of the existing United Kingdom. It’s time to put these resources to work for the benefit of people in places such as Maryhill and Springburn. But first we have to control them. With Diamond Jubilee weekend now past and the Olympic torch going to every nook and cranny of the UK, the anti-independence politicians have tried to use the context of these celebrations to make ill thought out political points. Apparently such celebrations would

all end with Independence as we would cease to be British. Now who would be so daft? Well Labour leader Ed Miliband and former tory minister Michael Forsyth. Who are they (or me for that matter) to tell you whether you do or do not feel British. Someone reading this column might feel Scottish, British, European or Glaswegian. Possibly all four or any combination of them. Perhaps they feel none of these identities at all. In terms of the celebrations that have recently past, it is worth noting that people from across the Commonwealth countries were celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and that the Olympic torch as I recall visited that great British city - Dublin!Cultural identity is a matter of personal choice, and not one for anti-independence politicians to

dictate to us. And they should certainly not use sport or the monarchy for their own narrow political interests. Now to that YES Scotland launch. As it happens I missed that launch as I had meetings aimed at helping prevent the UK Government closing the Remploy factory in Springburn.I don’t suppose the workers at Remploy want a debate over how British they feel, but they do want to ensure that those making the political decisions that affect their lives take the correct decisions and are accountable for their actions. The same could be said for those struggling to find work due to the mismanagement of the UK economy, or indeed for those that are having their welfare payments slashed brutally by the UK Government. I suspect these people are more

concerned about where the power sits - and how it is exercised - when vital decisions that affect their lives are taken. That’s why we need political independence. Independence is about putting Scotland’s needs and interests first, and will not affect our social union with our neighbours in the other nations of the United Kingdom or Europe. We will continue to have a good relationship, and be successful trading partners with these countries. So the YES Scotland campaign is up and running and in the autumn of 2014 you will be asked in a referendum whether Scotland should be Independent. This is not a referendum on how ‘British’ we are. Politicians should butt out of that

debate. Rather, with Independence, it is an exciting and historic opportunity for our nation to choose a different and better path.

An historic moment occurred this week when I watched the first blocks of the Red Road flats being demolished. These flats had helped solve a housing crisis in Glasgow in the 1960’s, and for many families offered homes with central heating and inside bathrooms for the first time. While it is sad for many people to see their family homes being demolished, it is time we replaced these flats with new and modern housing fit for today. What we have learned from the Red

Road is its not just about building new homes, but

also about how they are managed and maintained.A few weeks ago, I helped organise a lobby of Parliament on behalf of the local housing associations in my constituency. Over 100 people representing housing providers, managers and tenants wanted to make clear their fears to MSPs about our current housing policy in Scotland. One of the biggest concerns shared by tenants and housing providers is

the lack of money from the Scottish Government to help with regeneration and bringing derelict land back into use for the benefit of local residents. It is important that we get housing policy right for the future of the North and East of the city. Housing associations play a vital role in our community and the provision of affordable housing is only a small part of what housing associations provide. Every good housing association helps offer benefits advice, provide community facilities, run social clubs for tenants and allow residents to feel safe in their own homes. A housing provider not only helps build

the physical homes for people, but also helps build our communities so that they are stronger and more confident . I will campaigning to ensure Community Housing Associations are given the funding they need to ensure they are afforded they opportunity to build the kind of new homes that will ensure our communities are given the kind of future they deserve.

If events of the last few weeks tell us anything, it is of the powerlessness of Governments in pursuit of redundant right-wing ideologies facing economic headwinds of their own making. People in Scotland are being hurt badly by a crisis of lack of work and of weak economic demand through a double-dip recession made in Downing Street, but it is a crisis which the European right is making reach from the North Sea to the Mediterranean. The social catastrophe of such a monumental shortage of jobs are clear on every street corner. In Glasgow North East there are now 32 people languishing on Jobseekers’ Allowance chasing after every job advertised in the area’s job centres. Across the country, some 1.4 million people are currently forced into part-time jobs because of insufficient levels of full-time job creation under this Government, leading the TUC to estimate the real level of unemployment in Britain to be around 6.3million. Hours

worked are slumping, real wages have fallen every month David Cameron has been Prime Minister, and 320,000 people in Scotland are existing below the poverty line, despite taking whatever work is available. Median incomes in Scotland fell by nearly 6% in the first year of this Government, the biggest slump in household incomes since the dying days of the last Tory Government in 1995/6. Added to the regressive tax increases introduced by George Osborne, such as the VAT hike to 20%, and the austerity cuts programme being imposed by the Coalition with bludgeoning effects on economic demand, it constitutes the biggest squeeze on ordinary people’s living standards since the 1920s. It’s leading to the destruction of lives, but also to the shredding of the reputation of both Osborne and the Liberal Democrats. In the recent elections, more people in parts of Edinburgh voted for a penguin to run their city than an heir to Gladstone or

Lloyd-George. Osborne is now viewed by substantially more half the public as lacking any credibility on the economy given his massive blunders on fiscal policy, and the manifest unfairness and incompetence of his economic stewardship in driving an economy growing at 2.1% and with falling unemployment when he took office into the trough of stagnant demand and slump. But if it’s austerity for the majority, it’s party time for people at the top of society. The High Pay Commission discovered that in the year to November 2011, pay for top FTSE 100 company directors increased by 49%, whereas that for average workers went up by just 2.7%. The Child Poverty Action Group predicts a record rise in child poverty and inequality if a different course is not adopted soon. A radical reordering of the relationship between capital and labour is therefore needed. The Resolution Foundation recently produced evidence that raising the minimum wage to a proper living wage - £7.20 an hour outside London, and £8.10 an hour in the capital – would cost big business less than 1% in additional costs,

and have positive effects in the wider economy in boosting demand for goods and services. Even with small businesses in the retail and food and drink sectors, the costs of a living wage being introduced are eminently manageable. The conclusions of the High Pay Commission need to be implemented in full, including placing an employee representative on the remuneration committees of firms to control excessive pay packages at the top. The consensus on more equal distributions of wealth and power within societies being far better for growth extends from the White House to the International Monetary Fund, but not yet to Government Ministers chillaxing here at home. In his recent trip to the UK, the progressive US economist Paul Krugman lambasted the madness of the austerity cult in the US and Europe, and pointed to an alternative – spending wisely on government capital projects to build schools, repair roads, construct train lines – investment that would create jobs now and provide long-term

infrastructure the country needs for its future competitiveness. Similarly, in housing, a major home building programme would get the construction sector in Scotland, currently facing an unprecedented slump, off its knees, get thousands of builders off the dole, and deal with Scotland’s social housing crisis which Shelter have identified leaves us short of 156,000 properties and abandons people on 7 year waiting lists for affordable socially rented homes. Across the EU, the new President of France, Francois Hollande, will have strong allies in Ed Miliband and other socialist leaders in advocating an alternative to austerity economic policies which have left 25million people in a vain quest for work currently. Slashing pay rates by half, and abandoning countries like Greece to year after year of crushing recession, the results of the Merkel-Cameron economic medicine, are not the route to recovery. Right-wing parties must change course to a more expansionary fiscal policy now, federalising the debt, using the

power of the European Central Bank, and supporting transfers of resources in a true fiscal union, if entirely avoidable damage to economic output and lives is not to become a permanent scar on our continent’s future.

Plastic fantastic – wash & squash this Recycle WeekWe’ve been using it for 65 years and between water and soft drinks, shampoo and bleach, and olive oil to garden fertiliser, we get through a staggering 15 million of them every day in the UK alone. The humble plastic bottle has never been so much in demand, and now, thanks to the upcoming summer of sport and celebration, demand is set to soar further. It’s not just the prospect of Jubilee street parties, barbecues and associated merriment, there’s the small matter of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Games; spectating will be thirsty work for the nine million ticket-holders and estimated 38 million TV viewers over the 30 days of competition. And we’ve not even touched on keeping cool while watching Wimbledon from Murray Mount, Euro 2012 on giant outdoor screens or the usual festival circuit. In short, 2012 is set to be a bumper year for plastic bottles. But with less than 50 per cent of them currently making the recycling bin, national Recycle

Week wants to turn it into a bumper year for collecting them too. The now-annual recycling push, running from 18-24 June this year, reminds us all of the value of recycling and just how easily we can do it. For 2012, it wants us to think twice before jettisoning our plastic bottles into the rubbish bag – because now, thanks to technology, it’s possible to recycle ALL shapes and sizes of bottle. Milk, shampoo, bleach, shower gel, and even plastic bottles used outside in the garden or kept in the shed. You name it; all you have to do is wash ’em and squash ’em.Even better, over 90 per cent of all UK local authorities now offer collection facilities for plastic bottles, either from a kerbside scheme or at recycling centres; you can find out what service is offered in your area by visiting your local council website or checking the postcode locator on the Recycle Now website www.recyclenow.com.UK households dispose of around 4.9 million tonnes of packaging

every year , but recycling just one tonne of plastic bottles saves 1.5 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere. To put this into perspective, if all of us in the UK recycled just one extra plastic bottle during Recycle Week, this would save enough energy to power over 71,000 plasma screen TVs for a year. Recycling also benefits the environment by significantly reducing air and water pollutants. So what happens to bottles during recycling? They’re first separated by colour, cleaned, melted down and then turned into plastic pellets. These are used to make fences, bags, flooring, window frames, fleeces, fibre fillings… or even more bottles! The good news is the technology that’s helping us do this is also helping us increase recycling rates of a number of other plastic items, such as yogurt pots, plastic trays, tubs and films so soon we’ll be able to recycle these items at home too. It’s also getting easier to recycle your plastic bottle when out and about with a number of Recycle

Zones being set up across the country; these provide designated areas where special units will help you recycle a whole range of items. You can find them in airport departure lounges, sporting venues, theme parks, shopping centres… and even on the local high street. Why not look out for them when you’re away from home. This year, global giant Coca Cola Enterprises is playing a major part in the initiative with a commitment to recycle all clear plastic bottles at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Games. Estimates suggest that this translates to one fifth of the consumer waste likely to be produced at London 2012 venues. So, as recycling plastic bottles is now easier than ever, let’s start washing, squashing and recycling all our plastic bottles. And there’s no need to wait until Recycle Week….we can make a difference now.

 As  we  all  look

forward  to  the  summer  months,

remember  to  keep  recycling  wherev

er  you  are…  at

home,  at  work  and  while  out  and

Millions of tonnes of garden waste, such as grass cuttings, prunings and leaves, are sent to landfill sites each year – in fact it equates to filling the Royal Albert Hall with grass, twigs and leaves more than 70 times over! Yet they’re a valuable source of

nutrients which could be turned into something altogether more useful – COMPOST!Things you can doYou could be...•setting up your new compost bin, or•breathing life into your borders with your own home-made compost, or•using peat-free compost containing recycled materials, or maybe•treating yourself to patio furniture made from recycled materials.Whatever you are doing, you won’t want to keep your garden a secret!Start compostingA third of the average household bin can be composted. This includes:•fruit and vegetable peelings;•teabags;•cardboard and newspaper; and•your garden waste.Best of all, it’s easy to do it yourself in a home composting bin.

Save waterWe can all do our bit to reduce the amount of water we use in our homes and gardens, yet maintain moisture levels in our soil. •Fit a nozzle on your hosepipe so you can control how much you use. •Grey water (such as dishwater or water from washing vegetables) can be used to water plants as long as it’s allowed to cool, contains no chemicals and isn’t used on plants you intend to eat!

•Collect rainwater in a water butt. •Use a soil conditioner or home made compost to aid moisture

retention.•Choose plants which like dry conditions, such as grasses, herbs and succulents.Get creativeThere’s not much in our homes that can’t be put to a good use in the garden!•Empty plastic drinks bottles cut in half make great planters or bird feeders•Seedlings can be planted in empty yoghurt pots, egg cartons or cardboard toilet roll tubes. •String old CD’s or milk bottle tops together to scare the birds away.•Fill in gaps in your lawn by using grass seeds sowed on used tea-bags!

Ashfield 1 Irvine Meadow 0CUP WINNERS CUP FINAL

Pictures Courtesy of Inga Match Report Courtesy of Ewaninblack Ashfield Website

A nice balmy evening greeted the players onto the Newlandsfield Turf in a repeat of this Season`s West of Scotland Cup Final.

Both Teams were in their traditional strips and had reached the Final courtesy of two hard fought Semi Final Victories, with the `field overcoming Auchinleck 1-0 at Beechwood last Friday & the Meadow winning through on penalties against Maybole after a 1-1 Draw. Referee Kevin Graham was kept busy in the opening stages as tackles were fierce as both teams tried to obtain a stranglehold however it was

the Glasgow Team who had the initial edge with Shaun Fraser linking up well with Halliday, Maxwell & Chalmers stretching the Meadow back four. The `field were rewarded in the 10th Minute when Shaun Fraser won the ball from the Meadow Captain Mark Campbell and as he drove into the box there was a tug on his jersey which was immediately spotted by the Linesman & the Referee pointed to the spot. Mark Thomson stepped up and drilled his penalty into the top corner past the despairing hands of Keeper Wardrope. The Meadow

Keeper had been outstanding in the West of Scotland Cup Final however had no chance from the spot-kick. Ashfield 1 Irvine Meadow 0.

Ashfield continued to put the League Champions under pressure and Shaun Fraser almost broke through before being brought down by Ryan who received a yellow Card. The Ashfield Skipper Thomson almost increased the `field`s lead from the Free-Kick however his effort narrowly missed the upright. Shaun Fraser volleyed wide shortly after before the Meadow began to come more & more into the game

and began to stretch the Ashfield rearguard. A series of corner & Free-kicks were well defended by the Ashfield back four with Lee McShane winning the majority of his aerial tussles.

The Meadow No 11 was having an excellent game & Paul Maxwell followed McShane into the Referee`s book for bringing him down shortly before the interval. The last effort of the half came from Ashfield and from the trusted right foot of Skipper Mark Thomson whose Free-Kick from the edge of the box was well saved by Wardope.

HALF TIME:- ASHFIELD 1 IRVINE MEADOW 0 There was no change to

the line ups at the start of the Second half and fitness would certainly play a major part as both teams were not at full strength. It was the Team from Ayrshire that took control of the early stages and were working the flanks well. Again a series of Corners were well defended however the Meadow almost equalised on the hour mark

when Flannery headed over from close in. Shaun Fraser had been well marked in the Second Half however the Ashfield Midfielder almost increased the `field`s lead when he weaved past the Meadow defence & curled a shot narrowly past the post. It was end to end stuff now and although the Ashfield back four were under pressure, chances were at a Premium. With 20 Minutes to go there was an almighty `stramash` inside the Ashfield box after a corner kick with the ball eventually being cleared as it bobbled around the Six yard box. Robert Halliday who was playing on the left hand side of midfield almost scored for Ashfield getting on the end of a Mark Thomson Free-kick, heading narrowly past the post.

Ashfield made a couple of changes taking off the impressive Kevin Murray however Substitute John Gaynor only lasted a couple of minutes before a sickening clash of heads with Meadow Skipper Mark Campbell brought the game

to a halt for 10 minutes whilst the Physios worked on the Ashfield player. It looked a very serious injury & an Ambulance was called straight away. (The Good News is that the player was later released from Hospital).

After the delay Ashfield managed to retain their composure and see out the rest of the Match, which had been played in a really good spirit, to the delight of the Players, Management and Supporters. The result and winning the trophy really is the `icing on the cake` to a wonderful Season for the Glasgow side and in fact `caps off `a remarkable 6 years in the Club`s history and everyone associated with the Club are thoroughly looking forward to next Season - Well done the `field !!!!!!

Man of the Match:- Lee McShane - The `Big Man` has had an outstanding Season and was ably backed up by Coll, Darroch & Mangan at the back this evening.
