Many individuals and companies are interested in being part of Manchester’s future - it is these people that we are interested in working with. Learning from the past and looking to the future is key to creating a place that is sustainable.

CITYCO INVOLVEMENT

CityCo is an independent, not-for-profit, membership organisation that brings together public and private sector businesses and partners.

They share RegenExpo’s vision of creating “a more dynamic, exciting and interesting place; to ensure continuing economic pros-perity, and to continue to strengthen the brand and reputation of the city.”

Cityco ensure that Manchester stays unique - it’s offer should not replicate that of other cities and we believe that by working with Cityco we can help achieve this.

RegenExpo aims to celebrate and utilise Manchester’s uniqueness so other cities will take precedent. Through working with Cityco we have a direct insight into the running of the city centre and are able to market and manage Manchester’s regeneration.

WHO IS INVOLVED?

REGENERATION WORKBENCH - SUregen

RegenExpo are also collaborating with SUregen. This is an online workbench that aims to target the problem of continuity in the regeneration process.

“The workbench will enable more effective and efficient collaboration between regeneration

team members through the provision of better visioning, analysis and evaluation in regeneration

initiatives. These regeneration teams may comprise politicians, regeneration staff in Local Au-

thorities, planners, architects, urban regeneration companies, regeneration consultants, engineers

and developers amongst others.”

We aim to materialise their efforts of an online discussion about regeneration. Their software will be used through out the exhibition to track the discussions that occur.

New East Manchester Ltd (NEM) was established in 1999 and is responsible for one of the largest and most significant regenera-tion programmes currently being undertaken in the UK.

Covering almost 2,000 hectares immediately east of Manchester City Centre (including the site of our RegenExpo) , the regenera-tion programme for East Manchester is transforming a huge area that was once the engine room of the city’s industry into an at-tractive and vibrant destination, home to a growing and proud community of investors, businesses and residents.

New East Manchester is committed to regeneration on both a local and a larger economic scale. They are about transforming the area to provide a better life for those living/working/playing there and it is this that interests us.

New East Manchester work in partnership with Manchester City Council and the Homes and Communities Agency alongside the communities of East Manchester.

What interests us is making what they do known to the public. What is going on in YOUR area and how can you gain the help you need to regenerate your area.

We have a huge interest in what is happening close to the RegenExpo so constant updates can be found in our Vision Box exhibition.

Manchester City Councils regeneration efforts are vast and involve “securing and managing a range of external funding streams from domestic and European sources to support the City Council’s objectives, particularly those relating to the regeneration of Manchester and improvement in the economic and social prospects of its residents.”

They work through area regeneration teams to the development of an area regeneration focus in the co-ordination and delivery of the City Council’s services and those of our key public sector agencies. It is these areas that we will help and work with to create visions and to get people involved in their area.

They work with neighbouring authorities and other parties to develop the City Pride partnership in order to secure better integration of regeneration investment within the core of the Greater Manchester conurbation. Fostering and supporting the development of voluntary and community organisations in the city helps them to promote the economic and social well-being of local people.

These people are key to making regeneration work and we wish to work closely with them to see the benefits the RegenExpo can have on local communities and regeneration on a larger scale.

Walk / CycleTake a stroll along the Rochdale Canal following the RegenExpo signs to experience

CarSee car parks below. Located along Oldham Road it is easy to access. There are a few on street parking spaces close to the site but please be aware of local residents

needing these spaces.

RailA 20 minute walk from Piccadilly Rail station through Picadilly Basin - notice the regen-

eration taking place in this area.

Public transportA number of buses run down Oldham Road refer to the http://www.tfgm.com/journey_

ANCOATS , MANCHESTER

The area of Ancoats lies just outside the city centre,

immediately to the north of Great Ancoats Street.

The principal buildings are the massive cotton spin-

ning mills, which are located adjacent to the Roch-

dale Canal and the nearby housing. This juxtaposi-

tion and inter-linking of manufacturing, transport and

residential uses meant that Ancoats functioned as

the first industrial estate in the world.

Before the Industrial Revolution, textile and other

manufacturing processes were carried on in and

around worker’s homes. Following the harnessing of

water power, mills were sited alongside rivers but they

had to be spaced out in order to extract the limited

amount of power available from a certain stretch of

water.

The invention of the steam engine overcame these

limitations, ensuring that mills could be larger and sit-

ed where most convenient. Ancoats proved to be a

suitable location for the larger mills and it eventually

became recognised as the place where the Industrial

Revolution commenced on a grand scale.

Manchester’s history is what interests us - central to the industrial revolution Manchester has thrived ever since whilst retaining the charm and elegance of the mill town culture - and this is where RegenExpo settled - in the heart of the Ancoats Area.

Manchester has thrived to compete on a global scale and its city centre speaks volumes as it bounced back from the horrific IRA bomb in 1996.

Manchester’s regeneration is also successful in terms of housing schemes, public spaces and transport links - all of which are there to learn from and it is for these reasons we believe Manchester is the perfect city for us.

The site lies within a the Ancoats conservation area due to its importance with regards to Manchesters industrial heritage. Victorian housing, Mill buildings and the church add to the charm of the area.

The predominant landuse in this area is residenial as the existing warehouses have been converted in to high rent flats. Take a look around and make your own judgement on the change.

THE LOCAL AREAThe site was carefully chosen due its heritage and architectural importance highlighting the history of Manchester. Through the design process these important views have been design around, framing views for visitors to enjoy and appreciate.

Appreciate St Peters Church from a distance

Admire the facade of the Victorian apartments and think how the mill workers once lived.

Opened in 1894, Victoria Square was Manchester Corporation’s first municipal housing scheme. The building was intended for 848 people in 237 double tenements and 48 single. The property continuesto be in council ownership and now provides accommodation for senior citizens.

Originally built by the immigrant Italian community the little church was forgotton and fell into disrepair. But it has been restored and will be used as a rehearsal space for the Halle, Manchester’s famous symphony orchestra. And they will use it for public concerts that will attract people to the area

A regeneration site is chosen

The vision boxes are delivered and used as the site grows.

Once the site is developed the boxes are removed from the site.

The vision boxes are brought back to the RegenExpo as ex-hibition spaces for the public to view.

We have a series of studio pods that are home to a range of people. Architects, artists, planners and students all looking for people to collaborate with. So come and see what they are up to and how you can be involved.

URBAN SPLASH

Urban Splash were established in 1993, the company mainly worked in the northern cities of the United Kingdom such as Manchester, Bradford and Liverpool, but has recently expanded into the Midlands and the South in such places as Birmingham, Bristol (Lake Shore) and Plymouth (Royal William Yard).The company are known for taking on difficult sites and projects that other developers will not andplace emphasis on design, employing well respected

architects such as Foster and Partners, ShedKM and Glenn Howells.
