Leader of the Labour Group Gordon Matheson, joined with Councillors Elaine McDougall, Frank Docherty, Gerry Leonard, Ruth Simpson plus Gerry McCann who has been a stalwart in the campaign throughout to signal the “Save Lightburn Hospital” Pledge launch. MSP Paul Martin told the Re-Gen, “ We are all working hard on behalf of the East End residents to try and get the Health Minister Nicola Sturgeon to reject the call from Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board to close this well used Hospital.” It has been stated that some services have already been moved from Lightburn Hospital in preparation of the closure and if this is so then some people should hang their heads in shame as the proposal has not yet reached Nicola Sturgeon’s desk. There is no doubt as far as the vast majority of residents are concerned that the closure has been a done deal for over a year now and this as far as the Re-Gen is concerned, is a slight on Health Minister Nicola Sturgeon who after all should have the final say. For the Health Board to pre- empt a Government Minister’s decision, smacks of egotistical contempt and little thought being given for those being affected by the proposed closure. Let’s hope the Minister can use her own judgement when the proposal eventually reaches her. As the consultation process undertaken by the GG&CHB has been already shown as flawed by all who have attended the previous “Save Lightburn Hospital” meetings, we trust that Ms Sturgeon will realise the feelings of the East end residents and make a knowledgeable decision based on the needs of the community and not the on the savings of the GG&CHB.

SHOPPERS at Ballieston’s Barrachnie Road Co-operative Food store were met with a carnival atmosphere in the store recently. In a bid to raise funds for learning disability charity ENABLE Scotland staff adorned brightly coloured outfits, sunglasses and hats to bring a little bit of sunshine to shoppers in the midst of Scotland’s wet summer weather and £180 was raised for ENABLE Scotland on the day. ENABLE Scotland’s Corporate Relations Manager Jen Niven said:”The dress up theme days are very popular with the Co operative Food store employees. It’s a simple and effective way to raise funds whilst having a bit of fun in store.

The Co operative customers really enjoy supporting the stores, making this activity a real success for everyone” ENABLE Scotland, and its sister charity Mencap, are The Co-operative Group’s Charity of the Year partners for 2011, and the Group is raising money for the charities during the year, to help transform the lives and dreams of thousands of young people who have a learning disability. The Co-operative’s support will allow ENABLE Scotland and Mencap to launch a ground-breaking programme, called Inspire Me, which will work with 20,000 people who have a learning disability to provide activities and training,

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

Morrison’s Gym Hosts Zambian Work-Out

WORLD champion boxer Ricky Burns put some of Africa’s leading sportsmen and women through their paces recently, during a sparring session in Glasgow. Coatbridge born Burns, who retained his WBO super-featherweight title against Nicky Cook, hooked up with a group of Zambian athletes who were in the city for a high-performance training camp ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The delegation, which includes athletes, boxers, swimmers, badminton players, coaches and officials were nearing the end of a three-week training camp. It had been organised by Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council and formed part of the city’s commitment to leaving a lasting legacy from the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. During their stay in Glasgow, the Zambian sportsmen and women underwent an intensive training programme at several of the city’s world-class sports facilities including the Palace of Art Centre for Sports Excellence, Scotstoun Stadium, the Glasgow Club Tollcross, the National Badminton Academy and Glasgow School of Sport. Speaking at the training session in Morrison’s Gym in

Dalmarnock, Chair of Glasgow Life Councillor George Redmond, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for our friends from Zambia to come and see our very own Ricky Burns work out in his own gym. You could see from the smiles on their faces just how much it meant it to them.” Three Glasgow venues have already been officially recognised as accredited venues for the training camps by the London Organising Committee of the Olympics (LOCOG). They are Scotstoun Stadium and Sports Campus, the Palace of Art Centre for Sports Excellence and Toryglen Regional Football Centre. The Zambian delegation were based in the University of Strathclyde halls of residence during their visit to Glasgow, to give them experience of an environment similar to an athlete’s village. Scotstoun Stadium and Sports Campus is a LOCOG-accredited venue for athletics, paralympic athletics and badminton. The Palace of Art Centre for Sports Excellence is an accredited venue for boxing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlighting and wrestling and Toryglen Regional Football Centre is accredited for football.

Virgo (24 Aug - 23 Sept)

Libra (24 Sept - 23 Oct)

Scorpio (24 Oct - 22 Nov)

Sagittarius (23 Nov - 21 Dec)

Capricorn (22 Dec - 20 Jan)

Aquarius (21 Jan - 19 Feb)

Pisces (20 Feb - 20 Mar)

Your ruler Mars moves signs on the 3rd moving into you domestic zone. As we all know he is a bossy little planet and may stir up some trouble around your family and friends. You may find that you are dragging up the past and raking through people’s skeletons, if you want to keep your friends please close the closet as leaks will definitely be regretted by September.

Neptune is a planet that can make your dreams come true, and he is back in your sign on the 5th and he is only here for a few short months so make the most of this time to get what you want from career issues to sorting out your love life, the full moon joins him on the 13th allowing you to say goodbye to who and what is holding you back.

Time to shake up and shape-up as Mars moves into your money zone from the 3rd encouraging you to make plans for new opportunities on how to build your coffers! Work will be foremost on your mind and if you can lift your self-confidence and remember you are a bright star you will rocket into orbit!

Worrying about money is a waste of time, but doing something to improve your situation is not. Love is not going to be easy for you this month either so hold on tight it will get a little bumpy along the way. With Saturn still in your family zone and mars entering on the 3rd, you will be thinking about moving home or making decisions on how to sort out your child who needs some new rules to keep them in line.

As your solar year begins, Neptune is moving into your love skies, with a little romance in your heart you can make your heart’s desire a reality, if you wish! Jupiter is in your work zone and shine hope and optimism, he is known as the planet of luck and he seems to be drawing the right people at the right time to you like a magnet in the coming months

It is a poor month for romance from the 5th of the month and those you love seem to be testing you in more ways than one. Venus is back on the 21st so make the most of that time where you could rekindle your fire. On a brighter note your career and money are improving this month and it is a good to share your ideas with those who would listen as there is a hidden gem just waiting to get out!

A typical month for you , where you want one thing to happen, well others to do it for you and another occurs. This is the nudge you need to realize that you are the only one who can sort out your communications. Your love life is taking a turn for the better as those nearest and dearest around you just seem to get you this month.

Try not to get caught up in petty disagreements this month as to who said what as this type of behaviour needs to be nipped in the bud immediately, as Mercury is retrograde and is doing his best to wind you up. At work you may be given a project to handle as a sort of quest and the results will definitely have an input in your future there.

Mercury retrograde in your sign this month gives you an opportunity to talk and look at all communications between you and you other half, look at what was said and about commitments or promises you may have made but have not yet fulfilled! Try to remain optimistic where work is concerned to as things may go a little dull around the middle of the month but by the 23rd through to the 29th things are looking really bright and there could be a promotion for some.

Mars is moving into your love zone at the beginning of the month and things are hotting up for the usually well hidden fires of Capricorn, you are on fire this month and you are attracting moths to the flame, remember to put some of that new found passion into your current relationships, and remember all that fire can also cause some heated debates, try to control the heat!

.Try to live in the moment this month as there is so much going on in your chart that I would need a week to discuss it. Try not to start plans this month or over analyses either as communications are not what they appear to be, Honestly this month you need to go with the flow, don’t commit to anything and do not sign anything until after the full moon on the 13th.

You will be in your element this month as there is so many comings and goings of the planets in your sign you will do yourself proud as you twist and turn with the flow. It is a month to sort out the wheat from the chaff, all those niggling issues in love and work so you can have a clear start for September, Friendships will show there true colours around the 16th so be prepared to let go and move forward.

Anne’s Spirit Art CardsFor Divination

Hooray! Get the flags out! We have had some sunshine. My family are over from Australia and I think that they have brought the sun and good weather with them. As they are going to be here for several weeks, I hope it sticks to them like glue. In true aussie style I am organizing a barbecue for them. Loads of chilled beers and wine. The only difference is we won’t be having emu steaks or crocodile chops to eat. Still I’m sure I can help them feel like they are home from home. So here’s wishing them a fab time here in Scotland.

Sweet chilli prawns

Allow 5 prawns per skewer.Sweet chilli sauce

Skewer the prawns lengthways, you can shell them or buy the shelled type. I prefer to leave the shell on.Pour over the sauce and refrigerate for a few hours to allow the flavours to meld. Barbecue for 2 mins each side. Serve on their own or with some garlic bread as a starter.

Spicy steaks

Allow one good size steak per person

½ teaspoon of salt½ tsp black pepper½ tsp of paprika or cayenne½ tsp of garlic powder

Mix the ingredients and rub well into the meat. Refrigerate for a couple of hours before grilling on the barbecue to your liking. Serve with a green salad and the potato bake.

Potato bake

3lbs of fluffy potatoes. Baking potatoes are best1/4 pint of milk120g butter cubedCarton of single creamGrated cheese I use cheddar.Salt and pepper

Peel and slice the potatoes thinly. In a deep oven dish layer , layer potatoes , cheese and butter continue layering until you have used all the ingredients. Ensure you add salt and pepper to each layer. Combine the milk with the cream and pour over slowly. Cover dish tightly with foil and bake in a moderate 160c oven for at least an hour. Remove foil and return dish to the oven. Continue baking for 20-25 min until golden and bubbling. Remove from oven and allow to sit uncovered for 10-12 minutes before serving.

Fresh fruit fondue

StrawberriesMelon cubesPineapple chunksBanana slicesLarge bar of chocolate

Melt chocolate in microwave for 2 min. Serve the fruit with skewers . Best enjoyed with a chilled glass of champagne.

SCOTTISH MINISTER VISITS EASTGATE DEVELOPMENTSCOTTISH Infrastructure Minister Alex Neil this week visited the new Eastgate development which is well on its way to being ready on time. Dawn Construction won the contract to build the largest new build office block in London Road which when completed will house the Glasgow Community and Safety Services staff bring around 500 staff to the area. Joining local Labour Councilor George Redmond and other dignitaries, Alex Neil was given a tour of the development and met some of the local apprentices who have been working on the job. Mr Neil also visited

other new developments in the area including the Olympia at Bridgeton Cross and saw for himself the transformation of the East End. Speaking to the Re-Gen the Minister said, “ It is encouraging to see derelict properties take on a new life as they are developed to meet the modern needs of local communities”. Councillor Redmond (a member of the Clyde Gateway Board) stated, “All of these projects are improving how the area around Bridgeton Cross looks and are bringing much welcomed jobs”.

GLASGOW’S East End and the North of Glasgow have something in common and it is certainly something that they are not proud of...... “The constant reporting of deaths and injuries due to Knife Crime”. The reason we are once again highlighting this terrible fact is that recently it was pointed out that residents of other areas in Glasgow do not have the same problems we have, with people carrying and using knives seemingly as a day to day occurrence. Over the past few months we have had reports of knives being used in various attacks throughout our areas and the worrying thing is that we have become acclimatised to such behaviour and instead of being shocked by the amount of knife crime taking place we are actually reading or hearing about violent attacks and basically

accepting this as normal. Today’s “Hard Men” and “Gangsters” are mainly products of a throwback to the “Thatcher Years” when “Loadsamoney” and easy pickings for next to no effort by those who were in a position to exploit the working classes. The old saying, “Money goes to Money” was never as true as back in the sixties when “Pyramid Scams” and the like were popping up right left and centre, whilst those in authority basically turned a blind eye to such goings on. Working class families were becoming jealous of those people who had in their opinion “Never done a day’s work in their lives”, were seen going around flaunting their cash and boasting about having top of the range houses, cars, holidays etc...., while ordinary folk from the East end and the North of Glasgow were having to work overtime etc.. to make ends meet. Little wonder there was resentment.

When eventually these scams and cons were brought to an end, it was found that those with the cash had been dabbling in “White Powder” and Cannabis and the like and they were constantly looking for suppliers. Many of those who had ventured into the drugs market realised that there was easy money to be made in this and were able to put up vast amounts of money to buy in narcotics and instead of selling them on themselves they recruited unemployed people in the areas to basically “push” their wares for them. The money was good and the risks were minimal thanks to the courts sentencing policies. More and more “Pushers” were recruited and the more money that was made the greedier they became. The areas were split into “Territories” and woe betide anyone who ventured into the wrong area to sell their drugs, hence the introduction of

knives to help them protect their “Business”. The carrying of knives then became the norm and as one set of the community had knives to protect themselves, others who were not involved in the drug scene were becoming “Kitted Up” as protection against them. This spiralled out of control and although there are campaigns against violence and Knife Crime constantly on-going, almost every week, we are hearing or reading about someone being attacked in knife incidents. The Scottish Government is certainly divided on what to do to combat Knife Crime with one side proposing “Carry a Knife –Go To Jail” whilst the other side are advocating “No Jail Sentencing under six months - but making better use of the Community Service orders”. When are we going to wake up and smell the coffee? Anyone carrying a knife WILL use it given provocation, and that provocation

could just be someone brushing against them for example, nothing serious but just simply annoying. Is That worth a Life? Is That Worth Ruining not only Their Life but also Ruining Families who have to contend with the death of a loved one. Back in the 50’s there was a Judge called Lord Carmont who took it upon himself to hand out long sentences for acts of violence. These sentences were not something he invented by himself but were in the legislation of the Government who stated that these sentences could be applicable for those found guilty of breaking the law in regards to violence. These sentences will still be in operation today..... Why don’t our present day Judges

implement them? Why does it seem to many of us in the area that the judicial system persists in leaning towards the perpetrator and continue to ignore the victims. Until we get sentencing that reflects the mood of the decent people in our area we will continue to get those who will flout the law knowing that they will receive a “Slap on the Wrist” and be told to stop doing bad things. Little wonder that, when we read about knife assaults, we accept it as normal behaviour and then turn to the next page and ignore it. It’s time NOW to start questioning the sentences being handed out to those convicted of knife crime. The Re-Gen will be highlighting these over the next

few months, let’s see if you think the punishment fits the crime.

“Supporting the knife crime campaign”

Knife CrimeMOST people will never experience knife crime firsthand, but the consequences for those who do can be devastating.Strathclyde Police is working hard to change attitudes towards the carrying of knives. You can help protect yourself and others by making wise choices.

Don’t carry a knife Even if you don’t intend to use it – you are putting yourself at risk. You are also putting yourself in a position where you could kill someone. A single stab wound can be fatal.Never look after a knife for someone elseMost knife incidents in the West of Scotland involve young men

between the ages of 16 and 25. Sometimes, a teenage girl will carry a knife in her handbag for her boyfriend in the belief that she won’t be searched. Police can and do use hand-held metal detectors to seek out hidden weapons. If you carry a knife, chances are you will be caught.

Keep school safe and blade-freeKnife possession and knife crime are rare in Scottish schools.

However, if you know of someone who brings a knife to school, it is important that you tell someone.Report your worries to a

teacher, or telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where you can pass the information anonymously.

THE RISKSTHE punishments for carrying a knife are harsher than ever. One in three people convicted of a knife crime go to jail, so its worth knowing what you can be sent down for and for how long.

This could get you a life sentence-Injuring someone with a knife-Murder

This could get you 4 years in jail-Carrying a knife-Threatening someone with a knife

Carrying a knife can just get you a fine. But it can also get you expelled from school and makes it much harder to get a job

If its just for protection, its just as dangerous. The real risk is using your knife

without meaning to. Its how a lot of injuries and murders happen. You get into a fight and before you know it, you’ve used your knife on the other guy or they’ve used it on you.

If you carry a knife, there’s a good chance that you’ll be the one who gets stabbed.

What a knife wound can lead to-Brain Damage-Deformity-Life in a wheelchair-Gangrene-Having a leg or arm amputate

The average ambulance response time is twice as long as it takes to bleed to death.

Now for the big one, you could die. It happens easily. If a knife punctures

an artery or a major organ, you can bleed to death in minutes.

For every stabbing there are many victims.

John Wheatley CollegeFully Committed to the CommunityJOHN Wheatley College was concerned to hear the findings of the University and College Union, ( UCU) study. Acting Principal Alan Sherry in response to the statement told the Re-Gen, “We are already aware of this issue as surveys of educational attainment levels here in the East of Glasgow have historically shown high numbers of residents with no qualifications. It’s widely recognised that this can limit access to job and other opportunities and influence people’s potential earnings in the workplace. The College’s catchment areas experience an array of social and economic problems which have, in many cases, impacted on residents’ ability to achieve qualifications the first time around. These are deep-rooted and long term challenges which are particularly evident in the East of Glasgow”. John Wheatley College was established in the late eighties to address just such problems and encourage people back into learning to develop the vocational, core and employability skills that help them gain qualifications and work. The College plays a key role in ensuring that local residents have the opportunity to achieve this by returning to learning, with appropriate support and resources. Alan Sherry continued, “Most of our introductory programmes

are open to applicants with no qualifications. Our task is to support them on their learning journey as they acquire skills and, eventually, qualifications. Although there have been huge successes over the years, these figures from UCU indicate that work still remains to be done to bring the attainment levels of East Glasgow residents to the Glasgow norm. There are huge disparities between different areas which exist almost side by side within Glasgow and this underscores the need for community-based services with local decision making powers providing a local response to local needs. For example, in recent years the College has directed a significant amount of its resources

to supporting local schools and community groups, working closely with them to improve the attainment and achievements of young people. Schools have also worked successfully with a range of local youth service providers. The qualification levels in school-leavers have continued to improve over the last decade or so and are now on a par with the city norm”. John Wheatley College and its East and North East Glasgow community partners remain committed to building capacity within the community and supporting the development of skills and qualifications in local residents of all ages – both supporting and encouraging young people to achieve early in life, and enabling adults to make up for lack of success at school.

City Building apprentice named Scottish Learner of the YearRonson Slater receives top vocational award from Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon

A 21 year-old joiner is building a bright future after winning a prestigious Scottish vocational training award. Ronson Slater from Shettleston – who is completing a four-year Carpentry & Joinery apprenticeship with City Building – was crowned the Scottish VQ Learner of the Year 2011. Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made the award when she visited City Building’s – Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction company – Skills Academy in Laurieston on the city’s Southside.

Since starting his apprenticeship in September 2007, Ronson has gone from strength to strength winning the Trades House Modern Apprentice of the Year Award and being named City Building’s Modern Apprentice of the Year in 2010. Ronson Slater said: “It is a real honour to be named Scottish VQ Learner of the Year 2011 for Scotland. The training I have received from my apprenticeship has been invaluable in helping me to achieve this and has enabled me to build my experience and skills.

“I want to be a construction manager one day and would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to others who are keen to work hard and develop their skills in the construction industry.” Willie Docherty, managing director of City Building, said: “Ronson has been a model apprentice since he started training with City Building in 2007 and has impressed us all with his hard work and dedication. “To be named Scottish VQ Learner of the Year is a fantastic achievement and we hope that Ronson will continue to build on his skills and work towards making his dreams become a reality.” The UK-wide VQ Awards aim to raise awareness about the benefits of vocational qualifications and training and recognises the role that vocational learning plays in society and in the UK economy. Milnbank Housing Association- Employing Local people

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 08:30am-5:00pm

MILNBANK HOUSING ASSOCIATIONMilnbank Housing Delivering the GoodsSINCE the transfer of 857 houses from GHA last month, Milnbank Housing Association has been busy delivering services for its new tenants the “Milnbank” way. As Linda Sichi, (Milnbank Housing Association’s Depute Director) told the Re-Gen, “Obviously, we’re keen to demonstrate that tenants were justified in voting for the advantages that a community controlled organisation can bring in terms of service delivery. We’ve also sought to forge meaningful partnerships with Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and other organisations such as City Building to ensure that we provide these services as cost-effectively as possible”. This means that Milnbank H. A. has entered into partnership agreements with GHA and City Building for a range of services. As Julie Walker, who is one of the seven GHA staff who transferred to Milnbank H.A. explains, “GHA has an effective Neighbourhood Relations Team (NRT) that deals with anti-social behaviour. When we transferred to Milnbank and highlighted that the NRT and GHA’s legal team provided a really good service, the Association quickly agreed to continue buying these in”. This has led to MHA signing Service Level Agreements with GHA to purchase services from the NRT and GHA Legal. In addition, the Association is delighted that all its tenants will now have access to GHA’s contents insurance scheme. This is only one example of how Milnbank Housing Association continues to listen to its Tenants and works towards improving its services on an on-going basis. Another partnership that has been formed is with City Building. Milnbank already used City Building as one of its contractors so developing this relationship further was straightforward, as Linda Sichi highlights.

“We had no hesitation about entering into a partnership arrangement with City Building to provide maintenance services for our newly transferred stock. However, we wanted City Building to work in accordance with our procedures and have the tradesmen based here with us and City Building readily agreed”.

Willie Docherty, Managing Director of City Building, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Milnbank Housing Association, providing high-quality repairs and maintenance services, as well as training and employment opportunities for local people.”

One of the City Building tradesmen now working with Milnbank is John Paulley. He is delighted to be working at Milnbank and explained that he has had a previous connection with the Association. Johntold our reporter, “I come from Haghill and when I was at Whitehill Secondary School I was lucky enough to secure work experience with Milnbank Housing Association. When I left school the Association gave me extended work experience and this helped me secure a joiner apprenticeship with City Building. It’s great for me to be now back working in my local area as a qualified tradesman”. In order to verify if local residents had noticed a difference since transfer, the Re-gen spoke to some of Milnbank’s new tenants, although with this great weather we are experiencing it was a job trying to track them down as they were out most of the time enjoying the “Heatwave” in Dennistoun. When we eventually caught up with Alex Young of Armadale Path he was

delighted with the new landlords and he told the Re-Gen, “I am pleased that Milnbank Housing association is my Landlord. I recently attended a Focus Group that the Association has introduced and I welcomed the opportunity to have my say in what happens within my area. I feel that the Association listens to what tenants have to say and they try that little bit more to deliver a good service”. The same sort of response came from another of the tenants, i.e.

Lorraine Rodgers of Aitken Street. Lorraine stated, “I have noticed a big difference since Milnbank Housing Association took over in early June. Even from the first week the area looked much tidier as the Association cut the grass and trimmed the hedges. Not only that my neighbours have also commented that the area looks 100% better than before”. In closing, Linda Sichi told the Re-gen. “We’ve sought to make a positive impact following the transfer by providing services that cater for the

particular needs of our own tenants. We realise that different approaches are needed for individual neighbourhoods and our next task is to sustain the momentum we’ve established. We’re about providing local and responsive housing management, maintenance and estate management services, but at the same time we think it’s important to forge partnerships with other city wide organisations that can provide economies of scale. We believe that’s a win/win situation for our tenants and Glasgow as a whole”.

John Paulley (The local boy “Made Good” with Milnbank Housing Association)

COLLETTE Anderson is delighted to be a member of the Milnbank Housing Association staff and when you enter the Association’s offices in Ballindalloch Drive Collette is one of the first faces you see. Collette began her “Association” with Milnbank whilst she was still at Whitehill Secondary School. Looking for work experience she approached Alan Benson(Director) at Milnbank Housing Association and was offered a 4 weeks placement. This certainly whetted her appetite as the staff made her feel welcome and she really enjoyed the experience. When the time came to leave school Collette once again approached the housing association and she must have made a good impression as she was taken on as an Office Trainee as part of the Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative sponsored by Glasgow City Council. In April this year Collette was offered a position as a Customer service Assistant and since then her confidence has blossomed. Collette loves the friendly atmosphere in the office and in particular dealing with the tenants who not only drop in with queries but also pop in for a “wee chat” such is the ambience created within the Milnbank Housing Association organisation. We wish Collette well in her career.

Looking Towards an Environmentally Better FutureOne thing Milnbank Housing takes really seriously is the Environment and as such they have introduced some excellent projects in association with the Climate Challenge fund. The Association has linked up with local schools in the Dennistoun area to encourage

an “ECO” friendly awareness and this is typified by the work the kids at Haghill Primary School in conjunction with members of the Association have carried out. A visit to the school will let you see the Swan Garden that has been created with an Adventure Type run including a rope bridge and

rope swings. There is also well set out gardens within the actual complex with a large Swan flower display as a feature. Excellent news is about to be announced regarding major projects in Alexandra Park but we’ll leave that for another issue suffice to say the Park is about to “Come

Alive” again shortly as plans are well in hand. Continuing on the Environment theme, last Saturday at the Alexandra Park Gala Day Milnbank Housing Association manned a very popular stall in the Park and as part of their Carbon Reduction Programme they had a Prize Draw where the prizes

were TWO Bikes. The Winners of these excellent prizes were Paige Jessamine of Dochart Street and Emma Cook from Glendevon Square and as over 5,000 people attended on the day and enjoyed every minute of the Fun on offer, it certainly was a lucky day for both winners.

The sound of your alarm each morning is enough to send anyone into a short spree of depression but once you manage to drag yourself from your pit and have your morning tea or coffee, the world seems a brighter more serene place. Most people need a good kick to lift their spirits in the morning, it’s human nature, we all feel more uplifted after a wee cup of tea or a hit of caffeine. At the Re-Gen, we have come up with the simplest ways to stay refreshed and healthy from the moment you wake up till the moment you lay your head down at night.

Trouble Sleeping at night? If you are one of the 10 percent of people suffering from insomnia then there are things you can do to prevent this without the help of Night Nurse. People who suffer from insomnia often feel frustrated, unwell and tired throughout the day . It can affect your performance in work as well as your relationships with family and friends. In many cases this can lead people into a deep depression when insomnia persists for a long time, so act now with these useful self help tips.• Don’t drink caffeine after 6 o’clock at night . This is self explanatory but having too much caffeine can keep you wired and will be the cause of many sleepless nights. Keep your coffee for the morning and switch to some hot milk at night. • Keep away from energy drinks, they may give you a boost during the day due to the caffeine but they also contain a huge amount of sugar, which will keep you up at night. If you have to, you are better to have a coffee than any of the energy drinks on the market. Energy drinks will leave you with a come down in the morning due to the large caffeine and sugar content.• Wash your bed covers weekly or fortnightly. Having fresh bed linen on your bed will make sleeping more welcoming at night. No one wants to go to sleep on dirty old bed covers.• Keep a routine. If you establish a time to get up and a time to go to bed, stick to it. This will help set the brain’s internal clock which will get you into a regular sleeping pattern.• Have a bath before bed. Having a bath before bed is a great way to relax you, not only will you be wrinkly fingered and clean but you’ll feel like heading straight to the land of nod after a long soak in the tub.• Don’t eat anything after 8pm at night. If you eat just before you go to bed, your body will be digesting food at an ungodly hour and not only will this pile on the pounds eating late at night, it could be the reason your being kept awake because your body is receiving mixed messages about what it is supposed to be doing.• Try relaxing techniques. A good way to properly relax is to lie on your bed about an hour before you plan to sleep. The idea is to tense one part of your body at a time like your arm and then after a few seconds release. Doing this with your arms and legs at night before bed can leave you feeling very relaxed and sleepy.• Don’t use your bed for anything but sleep . If you are one to sit in your bed with work, homework or a laptop before lights out then try and change this. Your brain must distinguish between work and sleep and you won’t be able to sleep when you do your work where you’re supposed to be catching up on some much needed ZZZZs. • Use CD’s. Paul Mc Kenna’s ‘ I can make you thin’ book included a CD which is like hypnosis, you aren’t supposed to fall asleep to it but if you stick this on at night, I guarantee a well rested night. • Invest in some ‘blacked out’ curtains. Street light peeking through the window at night can be frustrating because when they go off, daylight pokes its head through your window. Investing in good curtains that keep your room dark will help with insomnia and it will allow you to switch off. Boost your health to its full potential

Sleep & WaterSleep is a huge contributing factor to feeling unwell, getting more than six hours sleep at night will not only make you feel more refreshed but it is also proven fact that people who get more than six hours sleep live longer. However, there are other essential things you can do to be healthier. Before you go to bed at night, place a glass of water by your bed to keep yourself hydrated during the night. You should be aiming to drink at least eight glasses of water a

day but this isn’t always easy as it can involve running back and forward to the toilet all the time but who cares about that when it is doing you good. Water flushes out all the toxins in the body and is extremely beneficial for women who suffer regularly from Urinary Tract Infections. It also hydrates the skin and if you can manage to drink the recommended eight glasses a day, you should notice over time that your skin becomes less prone to breakouts and dryness and even better than that, it’s free! Exercise without a gym If you’re not one for going to the gym or can’t quite afford to sign up to a gym membership, don’t despair, the gym is overrated.

You don’t have to go to extremes when it comes to exercising or run out and buy the latest array of celebrity fitness DVD’s. Start off gently, ease your body into a work out sessions in your own home. If you have stairs in your house, stand at the bottom of your stairs and use it as a stepping stool, standing up on the stair then back down again. Another great option is to stick

on your favourite music and have a dance around your living room or your bedroom if you don’t want any unsuspecting neighbours catching you busting a move. Simple exercising like this for 30minutes a day, three days a week will leave you feeling more energetic and happier. Light exercise is proven to release endorphins in your brain which makes you happier and relieves stress. Don’t Stress yourself Modern life is full of stresses and strains, for most people stress is just a way of life that people just tend to get on with but it can affect

all aspects of your life and can severely impact your health. Stress is healthy in small doses, when you perceive something as a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action and keep you alert. Too much stress on the other hand can be detrimental to your body and can increase your blood pressure to a dangerous level. So what can you do to keep your stress levels low? • Cut down on caffeine intake• Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Blueberries are especially beneficial for relieving stress because they are rich in antioxidants and rich in stress-fighting vitamin C.• Add tuna to your diet, tuna is high in stress fighting vitamins B6 and B12.• Have Cornflakes for breakfast, although they aren’t low in sugar, cornflakes and crispy rice cereal are loaded with B vitamins and folic acid which helps reduce stress.• Cut out the fags and booze, these are stimulants that will leave you feeling more highly strung than before.• Talk to someone, a problem shared is a problem halved . Talking to someone about your problems can be therapeutic and can leave you feeling less stressed with a huge weight lifted from your shoulders• Know your limits. It is important for your health to remember that we are all human who make mistakes and we know that some tasks in life are easier than others. If you are pushing yourself too hard take the initiative to step back when you feel things are getting out of control and say ‘that’s enough’. Smile We all smile when we are happy but have you ever tried smiling when you aren’t in the best of moods? Research has revealed that if we smile when we are feeling low our mood corresponds with our facial expressions. Give it go, it can’t hurt and you are potentially improving your health by reducing your stress levels and blood pressure. Happy health to all Re-Gen readers!

Platform at the Bridge was the place to be last month as they welcomed guests through the doors to help them celebrate 5 years in existence. Platform, (situated at Westerhouse Road), has certainly become one of the major theatre venues in the East End and is comparable with any other “Arts” facility not only in Glasgow but throughout Scot-land. Some of the productions which take place are second to none and it’s a testimony to the James Dean, Jackie Shearer and the staff at Easterhouse.

Platform is a great showcase for local talent and a great venue

for up and coming artists to get used to playing on the “Big Stage”. Councillor Jim Coleman (one of the driving forces behind securing the venue for the area) welcomed guests, including David Fletcher (who was very instrumental in getting the “Bridge” sited in Easterhouse), and invited them to watch short films and sketches, prior to par-taking of an excellent buffet and refreshment. Dancers from Danny Dobbie’s Visual Statement group put on a display for the audience and a great night was had by all.

Foxley Bowling Club have just finished a very successful season (according to chief “Cheerleader” Sheena Duff). The club based in Carmyle Avenue recently won the GBA Fours for the first time in 54 Years and the GBA Under 45’s for the first time ever. Juan Renau was also successful , by becoming the Scotland District 32 Under 25 singles Champion (the first time a Foxley member has achieved this feat). The club were also runners-up in the Scottish Mixed Pairs District Final and also the West of Scotland Women’s District Final. We are grateful to Sheena for drawing our attention to these awards and we trust that she made the tea for all competitors and supplied nice wee biscuits as well.

OPERATION Charter- Non Domestic and Domestic Knife Retailers Serious and Violent crime remains a top priority for Strathclyde Police with Knife crime at the heart of the problem. Over the past year great strides have been taken to tackle this problem in our society with more stop searches being carried out by officers, more people being caught with a knife or bladed weapon and bigger sentences for those caught when they go to court. The supply of knives from shops to criminal remains and last year new legislation was introduced requiring retailers of non domestic knives to be licensed. At the beginning of June 2011 Community Policing Team Officers have personally visited 144 retailers, throughout B’ division, who sell any type of knife and invited them to a seminar that took place at the beginning of July within the lecture theatre, John Wheatley College, Haghill Annexe, hosted in person by Chief Superintendent Wayne Mawson, Divisional Commander at London Rd P.O. Retailers in attendance ranged from Marks & Spencer to Corner Shops. Chief Superintendent Mawson opened proceedings with Inputs provided by Violence reduction unit, Medics against violence, Trading Standards and Sgt Duncan Evans from Divisional Licensing at London Rd P.O.The social responsibility that shops selling any kind of knife have is very powerful, and they are the first line of defence in the fight against a knife getting into the

wrong hands. Although we can never stop a criminal going into their cutlery drawer, Strathclyde police are doing everything to ensure access to weapons is reduced. The event was a great success with knife dealers deciding too stop selling knives as a result and other dealers committing their company’s to make staff more aware of their social responsibility and not sell them to the wrong person. Operation Charter will now move to the next phase: Enforcement, with unlicensed Non-Domestic Knife retailers who are still selling knives being targeted near you!

WITH just over three years until the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games begin, Scottish swimmer Michael Jamieson has spoken about his excitement for a home Commonwealth Games, in a blog for the Glasgow 2014 website. Fresh from his double-gold medal winning performances at Tollcross in the Scottish National Championships, in the pool where he developed as a swimmer, Michael is excited by the prospect of being back where it all began at Glasgow 2014. With the World Championships coming up in Shanghai later this month and London 2012 on the

horizon, the 22-year-old has plenty to concentrate on. However, with Glasgow 2014 fast approaching, Michael’s mind is firmly set on his mission of going for gold at the Commonwealth Games in his home city. In his Glasgow 2014 blog, Michael Jamieson said:“Glasgow 2014 could be a bit of a fairytale for me. Home city, home advantage. Tollcross is where I did all my hard work as an age grouper with City of Glasgow, where I developed as a swimmer and where I decided that swimming was the path I wanted to go down.” Michael first tasted global success

at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, bringing back a silver medal from his first senior international competition for his efforts in the 200m breaststroke. “The Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games was my first taste of silverware on the senior international stage and it was an amazing experience. It was great to make that step up and I’m delighted it was with Team Scotland.

“There has already been amazing support and excitement in the lead up to the Games and it’s only going to build from here on in.”

CHARITY DONATION TO HELP CHILDREN REACH NEW HEIGHTSCHILDREN in the East End of Glasgow have been given a major boost by kind hearted bosses at James Frew (Stevenston). To celebrate its centenary year, the company is donating sums to charities in areas in which it works and handed over a cheque for £1,911 to the Reidvale Adventure Play Association Ltd (RAPA) in Dennistoun. The money is earmarked to help develop a new climbing wall idea for the project which aims to improve the lives of children and young people from 0-16 years, including those with special needs, in a safe, supervised playground environment in their local community. Ann-Marie Todd, Project Manager with RAPA, a voluntary organisation with charitable status, said: “The young people who attend the playground have been asking for a climbing wall for a while and we think it would be great to put the money towards this as we are always working to promote physical activity and new skills. “Our aerial runway and tyre swings are very popular and a climbing

wall would be a great addition to our facilities. “We are absolutely delighted to receive this donation from James Frew which has been very supportive of us over the past few years and are thrilled it has recognised us as a worthy

charity.” Sandy Clare, Director of James Frew, said: “We have been working in the East End of Glasgow for many years and we are really pleased to have this opportunity to help Reidvale Adventure Play Association Ltd which is a fantastic place for kids of all ages with loads of activities to keep them busy from soft play areas and craft activities to assault courses and go-carts.” Along with the donation to Reidvale, James Frew gave all of its 230 day staff a free day off to mark the centenary. It has also pledged to donate £19,110 to a various charities across the country to mark the year in which it was founded 1911. Back then the average life expectancy was 50, the Commons voted to pay MPs a salary, and James Frew, the great grandfather of the current Managing Director, Roddy Frew, started a plumbing business. The company flourished during the post war housing boom focusing on plumbing and heating contracting. Now the company operates five divisions, providing a range of building services, with its headquarters still located on the site of the original business, along with offices in Glasgow and Airdrie.

British Land comes to the Cadets AidMEMBERS of the Easterhouse Army Cadets were delighted to receive a cheque to enable them to take the group away to their annual camp. The troop was under pressure to raise funds to attend their camp and it looked as if they had failed until British Land, (Parent Company of Shandwick Square Shopping Centre), stepped in with a donation of £770-00. Renia Tysler (Centre Manager), heard of the Army Cadets

plight and having already gained a previous donation on their behalf, felt that the group would certainly benefit by attending the camp. She then contacted British Land, who are well known in the area for their contributions to good local causes. Thankfully British Land saw the benefits along with Renia and recently the Easterhouse Army Cadets were invited along to be presented with a cheque. This excellent donation meant that

another 11 cadets were able to take part in the annual camp. Sarah Collinwood (Detachment Commander) told the Re-Gen, “We are extremely grateful to British Land and Renia at Shandwick Square for stepping in at the last moment to come to our aid. Everyone in the Cadets would like to thank them for their continuing support, it is much appreciated”.

Monday 1st August is the date I am hoping to have my new constituency office open. Whether it will be fully up and running on that day remains to be seen! At least the staff and I should be there even if the computers aren’t working yet. The office is at 1335 Gallowgate, just west of Parkhead Cross, near the Citizens Advice Bureau. It is a good location for bus

routes and for anyone using the Forge shopping centre. As well as the office being open 9am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, I plan to hold a surgery there each Friday from 5pm to 7pm. When I lost my job as an MP in 2010 I had to make the three staff redundant. So as one of them, David, was still available, I am taking him back on. I advertised the second post… and got 978 applications! It is

tremendously sad that so many folk want to work but are unable to find jobs. After interviews, we selected Anne, and she will also be working in the new office. During July I went for a camping holiday down the eastern side of England. First stop was Berwick - I had not realised that the walls were the biggest construction project during Elizabeth’s (queen of England) reign. I wonder

whom she was scared of! Other highlights were seeing the Fens (which the Dutch helped the English to drain in the 1600s), and the Railway Museum at York. I couldn’t forget about politics and saw that the ‘Yorkshire Post’ newspaper was running articles on how Scotland gets more than Yorkshire. I felt I had to write in and tell them that Scotland with 8.4% of the UK population was

contributing 9.4% of the UK’s revenues; therefore, it was only fair we also received a bit more. To be fair to them, they did print the letter! I look forward to seeing many constituents at the new office. Hopefully everyone won’t turn up at 9am on Monday or it’s going to be very busy!

I was glad to hear that Frank Mulholland QC, the top law officer in Scotland, has decided that people caught using knives could be given up to 4 years in prison. This is much closer to what Scottish Labour have been calling for but it still falls short of what I want to see, mandatory jail sentences for all knife criminals. This is a victory for knife crime campaigners all over the country after the pressure they have put on the Scottish Government. Carrying a knife is never acceptable and I am glad that after so long, the SNP

Government have started to realise this is a serious issue in our communities. Only this weekend did we see another 2 horrific attacks locally. A 25 year old man in Ruchazie was stabbed in the back in broad daylight at 7pm on Friday and a 65 year old pensioner suffered head wounds just an hour and a half later in Easterhouse. Mr Mulholland has also said that he will crack down on certain crime hotspots and that a tougher approach will be used when offenders are caught with a weapon in licenced premises or on

public transport. Again I must welcome this progress as the SNP have ignored this for far too long. The current situation is not good enough and too many people still think they can carry a knife without any consequence. I hope that this will start to change.

I was appalled to hear of the allegations of the widespread use of phone-hacking in some of our widely-read newspapers. I deeply sympathise with anyone who has been affected by this totally unacceptable and inexcusable practice and given these outrageous allegations, it is right and proper that NewsCorp has decided to withdraw their bid to take over BSkyB. Parliament was recalled last week from the summer recess so that MPs could debate and question the

Prime Minister on this important issue. During a particularly heated debate, I asked the Prime Minister to remember that the phone hacking allegations affect the lives of innocent families and victims and that this must be at the forefront of any debate we have on this subject. The Scottish Government must also step up to the plate and work with political leaders and authorities to ensure that the full scale of phone hacking in Scotland is un-covered. Given the

continuing revelations of hacking, it is highly likely that victims of phone hacking will be uncovered in Scotland. These people must have full assurances from the Scottish Government that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and all political parties in Scotland must put aside their close ties with News International and show its determination to get to the bottom of this matter. In doing so, the First Minister must outline what steps he is personally taking to fully support the

judge-led inquiry. The summer Parliament recess allows me to spend lots of my time in the constituency and I am looking forward to being out and about at the fair and fun days that the East end do so well! I’m also using the Parliamentary recess to host some events in the constituency which will allow constituents to share with me their own views on specific topics. For example, I plan to hold a special listening event in August for local women to share with me their views

and concerns on how the Tory-led government’s proposed plans on welfare changes are affecting their own family and friends. If you are interested in being involved in this event please contact my office for further information on how you can take part.

He was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he is being treated for his injuries. Hospital staff describe his condition as serious but stable. Detective Constable Nicola Kilbane of Shettleston Police Office told the Re-Gen, “At this time there is no further description available of the two men and the woman involved in this incident, however they were last seen getting into a white private hire taxi on Craighouse Street just after the attack took place. “I would urge the driver of the taxi, or any witnesses to this incident to come forward to police as a matter of urgency as they will have information that can help with this investigation.” Shettleston Police Office can be contacted on 0141 532 4800. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained. Around 8.30 pm on Friday (22nd July), the man was seriously assaulted in Auchencrow Street, Easterhouse, where he was struck by a bladed weapon. He managed to make his way to his house a few streets away and then phoned emergency services. He was taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he is being treated for head and hand injuries. Hospital staff describe his condition as serious but stable. At this time there is no information on any suspects. Detective Constable Nicola Kilbane of Shettleston Police Office told the

Re-Gen, “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this attack and those responsible. “Officers are currently carrying out enquiries in the local area and checking CCTV footage in an effort to gather more information on this crime. “I would urge anyone who was in the area of Auchencrow

Street around the time of the incident on Friday night, who either witnessed this assault take place, or has information that may assist police enquiries to contact Shettleston Police Office on 0141 532 4800. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.” Serious Assault - TollcrossDetectives in Shettleston are continuing enquiries following a serious assault in Tollcross on Friday (15 July) Around 2.45am, a 19-year-old man was walking along Altyre Street, near to Adrgay Street, Tollcross, when he saw two men approaching him armed with machetes. The man tried to run off but the attackers caught up with him and seriously assaulted him. He suffered a serious laceration to his left leg and had defensive injuries on his right arm. He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where his condition is described as serious but not life threatening. The suspects are both white and aged between 18 and 20 years of age. Both were wearing dark-coloured hooded tops with the hoods up and one suspect has a slim build and the other suspect has a heavy build. Enquiries so far have revealed that the injured man was assisted by a female member of the public and officers are very keen to speak to this woman. Officers have been carrying out door-to-door enquiries and checking CCTV images for further details on the attack. Detective Constable Graham Harries from Shettleston CID said: “I would really like to ask the lady who came to the man’s aid to get in touch as she could have vital information regarding this violent crime. I realise the incident took place in the early hours of the morning but it’s possible local residents heard some kind of disturbance, perhaps some shouting and I would urge them to please get in touch with us. Any piece of information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could assist us in tracking down the two men responsible.” Anyone

with information is asked to contact Shettleston Police Office on telephone number 0141 532 4836. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously. Serious Assault - EasterhouseOfficers at Shettleston are appealing for witnesses after a 43-year-old man was seriously assaulted in Easterhouse on Saturday 9 July. Around 12.05 am on Saturday 9 July, a 43-year-old man left the Brig Tavern in Easterhouse Road and got into the back of a private hire taxi. A man approached the taxi, grabbed the victim out of the taxi and seriously assaulted him. The injured man was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he is being treated for serious facial injuries. Hospital staff describe his condition as stable. The man responsible is described as white, 40-45 years of age 5 ft 8 inches tall of slim build. He was wearing a dark-coloured jacket, jeans and a white t-shirt. He also wore glasses. Detective Constable Nicola Kilbane of Shettleston Police Office told the Re-Gen: ““At the time of the incident, the nearby pub had just closed, and I am sure that there are people who witnessed this violent attack take place, who have not yet come forward to police. I would like to speak to anyone who saw this incident take place, in particular, I would like to speak to the driver of the private hire taxi, who drove off before police arrival.” Any witnesses, or anyone with information should contact Shettleston Police Office on 0141 532 4800. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained. Police have stated that they are following a positive line of enquiry and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Drugs Recoveries - GlasgowAround 7.30 pm on Thursday (7 July) officers from Strathclyde Police searched a flat in Castlefern Road, Glasgow, and recovered a quantity of drugs - believed to be Ecstasy - with an estimated street value of £60,000. This follows a recovery of drugs the previous night (Wednesday 6 July 2011) within the Cambuslang area where drugs - again believed to be Ecstasy - with a street value of approximately £20,000 were recovered. Following the seizure, two men aged 35 and 26 were arrested and following Thursday night’s seizure, a 48-year-old man was

arrested. Detective Chief Superintendent John Mitchell from Strathclyde Police said: “ We are absolutely determined to rid our communities of serious and organised crime and will resolutely target those involved in the sale and supply of illegal drugs. “I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to their local police office. Alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.” Serious Assaults - BailliestonStrathclyde Police is appealing for witnesses following a disturbance within ‘By The Way’ public house in Main Street, Baillieston on Friday (1 July) Around 11.30pm on Friday night, two friends (both aged 49) were drinking in the pub when a disagreement appears to have taken place involving up to five other men. The two friends were both then assaulted - one seriously - by the suspects. A third man aged 37 stepped in to try and separate the disturbance, and he in turn was also seriously assaulted. The suspects then fled from the pub in an unknown direction. The 37-year-old man and one of the 49-year-old victims were taken by ambulance to Glasgow Royal Infirmary to be treated for head and facial injuries. Both have since been released and are recovering at home. The other victim did not require medical treatment. Speaking from Shettleston CID, Detective Constable Kenny Shaw said: “This disturbance appears to have taken place over a minor disagreement, and the violence inflicted was totally unnecessary. What’s even more shocking is the assault on the man who tried to stop the fight taking place. Thankfully none of them were seriously injured. “The pub was fairly busy at the time of the assault, and Main Street was certainly still busy with people making their way home, taxis, etc. We are hopeful someone may have information on the suspects, and would urge anyone to come forward with any detail they have. No-one deserves to be attacked in this manner on a night out and we are determined to trace the men responsible.” Update: Police are following a positive line of enquiry and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. Information can be passed to Shettleston CID on telephone number 0141 532 4800 or alternatively CRIMESTOPPERS can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Environmental Awareness

This page is sponsored by the following:

As part of our environmentally awareness campaign we are always coming up with new ways to save the environment as well as saving you cash. We have come up with useful tips for recycling your furniture, so don’t be quick to throw away any unused or old pieces of furniture. By Recycling your old furniture , it prevents wood, fabric and foam waste from getting decomposed which produces greenhouse gases.Top tips for recycling your furniture

1.Be creative- Spend some time being creative, why not try repainting any old pieces of furniture and turning them into brand spanking new funky furniture.

2. Donate it- Why not donate your unwanted furniture, charity shops are always calling out for furniture and at least then you aren’t throwing away something that someone else could have a real use for.

3. Scrap it- Furniture made from steel and aluminium can be sold for scrap, while plastic furniture can be melted down and reused.

4. Reupholster it- Give your upholstered furniture a makeover by sprucing it up with new fabrics or cushion covers. With a little nip and tuck, you will be able to get an entirely renewed piece of furniture

5. Re-use it- Why not reuse your old pieces of furniture by using parts to either make other things in your house. Removing nails from wood and reusing the scrap wood in projects around your house. Use old pieces of wood to create a new shelf or new legs for a table.

6. Give it to family and friends- Children recently moved out? or friends in need of furniture? If you have furniture cluttering your home, ask around if anyone you know is in need of a table or a bed. One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.

Recycling Tips

Carbon Reducing Tips and Environmentally Friendly Steps to

saving the planetWE waste more energy in our day to day routines that affect the environment more than we realise. Even the simplest of things like brushing your teeth while the water runs or using your car everyday to travel to work is putting a great strain on the environment.

-Car sharing. If you’re travelling to work in the city centre and you know other people that are also travelling to the same location, arrange to car share to cut down on carbon emissions .

-When brushing your teeth in the morning, turn the tap off to save water when it isn’t in use.

-Don’t overheat your home. Install a thermostat to maintain a temperature of 16 degrees in bedrooms and 19 degrees in other rooms. Lowering the temperature of your home by just one degrees could save you seven percent on your electricity bill.

-Defrost your freezer. A 4mm coat of ice can double the consumption of electricity.

-Switch off lights when you are not in a room. We all walk out a room and forget to turn the lights off at times but by turning off a light when you leave a room not only saves the environment but it saves your electricity bills.

-Keep original containers. From your washing liquid bottles to shower gel, save them and fill them with handy re-fills that are now widely available in the shops.

-Buy washable nappies. A disposable nappy takes 300 years to disintegrate, with one baby getting through 5000 disposable nappies before they are toilet trained, washable nappies are a must for environmentally friendly living.

-Cut down on printing. Print only when is necessary and try when possible to recycle paper by using both sides.-Switch to public transport. If you aren’t able to car share, then why not take the train instead.

-Check your tyres. By maintaining the correct tyre pressure, you will reduce your fuel consumption greatly.

-Switch to duel flush models. You can limit the amount of water you use by switching to a dual-flush model or make older models more efficient by fitting water-displacement devices. They are cheap and easy to fit!

-Don’t ignore a leak. Dripping taps are a waste of water , always make sure your taps are turned off or any leaks are dealt with as quick as possible.

Simply Swap- Glasgow’s first swap shop opens in TollcrossTHE first “Swap Shop” in Glasgow opened its doors last week to residents in the East End. Simply Swap, the brand new swap shop from Playbusters, Grow Green with Glasgows East End Programme, gives you the chance to revamp your wardrobe by swapping your good condition clothing for other peoples. The shop is run by volunteers who have worked on the design of the shop itself over the past months. The first of its kind in Glasgow, Simply Swap aims to get people thinking about fun and creative ideas about what to do with things that would otherwise go to

waste. There will be fun activities and workshops for all ages and the shop itself is fitted out with reused materials, with everything from clothes rails and shelving made from reused wooden pallets to recycled newspaper shopping bags! Patrick Harvie MSP, officially opened the

shop at 937 Tollcross Road and said “ The simply swap idea ist just good for the environment its a free and fun way to change your wardrobe too. Most people want to be responsible shoppers, but the high street shops

don’t make it easy to think about where our clothes come from, or where they go to when we throw them out. Simply Swap will help everyone make the most of their wardrobe and stop good quality clothes going to waste” The shop itself was given by Tollcross Housing Association and Director Clive Douglas said:“We are delighted to be involved in this initiative and are keen to address issues of climate change in a variety of ways. We wish the Grow Green every success”

Lottery Chief visits East End CharityNEWLY appointed Chair to the Big Lottery Fund, Peter Ainsworth, Visited the East End this week to see for himself some of the marvellous work that the big lottery is funding in the East End. He was joined by BLF Director for Scotland Jackie Killeen. Top of his list was the award winning Playbusters who received funding over a year ago for their “Connecting Generations” Programme that operates right across the East End. He was given a warm East End welcome by Project Manager, Margaret Layden and around 30 volunteers and staff at Wellpark Community Hall. Some of the volunteers performed an intergenerational drama

production they had worked on with ADD-art and it went down a storm. Then Playbusters young volunteers gave the visitors and other people attending a viewing of an exhibition of work that included intergenerational work, environmental programmes, and activities for young people, Go Play activities and volunteering Programmes. Councillor Docherty and Sgt Hamill from Strathclyde Police spoke of the marvellous work that is being carried out in the

East End and congratulated the volunteers on the vast amount of personal time they put into their community. The guests commented on how unique it is to see so many family units volunteering together and were delighted to meet a special youngster who at the age of 5 is desperate to volunteer. Young Chantelle Douglas (aged 5) helps out with her Mum, Aunt and Granny when they are volunteering. Although she is still a number of years away from the age when she can officially volunteer with Playbusters she was keen to get in the act and made her own t-shirt which she was proud to show off at a previous awards ceremony. The highlight of the day was when Peter Ainsworth, Chair of Big Lottery Fund,

formally presented Playbusters with the Volunteer Friendly Award. This is awarded after an assessment by the Volunteer Centre for good –practice in volunteer management. Peter Ainsworth said he was overwhelmed by the hospitality and hugely impressed by the range, levels and vitality of activity on display and thanked the staff, volunteers and supporters for giving up their time on a sunny holiday afternoon. He said “ I am impressed with the diversity of work and grassroots approach of Playbusters and it is clear that the organisation is making significant impact within the East End. I congratulate your organisation on receiving the Queens Award which is thoroughly well deserved”

League chief Alex Morrison “this was a decision forced upon them after Blackhill’s refusal to play the game at Riddrie be-cause of an inter-club dispute, which would have resulted in Shettleston arriving with no op-ponents to play against, and the Association left with a subse-quent catering bill. “The clubs had played against each other (Home and Away) on Friday, June 24 with no sign of friction or hostility”, added Mr Morrison. Back on the green, Blackhill de-feated Shettleston in the Play-Off for the Henderson Trophy, and were presented with silver-ware by Honorary President, Jim Hayes, who also handed out League winners’ badges to both teams.

FULLARTON PARK ... will host Vale of Clyde and Bellshill Athletic in a ground-sharing agreement this season.

The Tin Pail are set to re-peat a ground-sharing agree-ment with Athletic after they reached a stalemate with North Lanarkshire Council. I understand talks between the 114 year-old junior club and NLC have so far failed to

problem after Bellshill were told they could no longer use West End Park due to cutbacks hitting temporary dressing room facilities. Local businessman and former junior footballer, Paul Fox, has worked tirelessly with a brand new committee after the original Brandon Park ground was sold to a property developer. A new set-up on Hattonrigg Road was beset by numerous problems and the club found themselves homeless before this latest body-blow. Ironically, I hear Bellshill are trying to launch an ambi-tious project near their town centre - which would involve local Boys’ Club teams - but North Lanarkshire have in-dicated this is not an option they favour.

Bellshill will now play both cup and league games at Fullarton Park until a solution can be found. In the meantime, loyal and somewhat frustrated Athletic supporters will require additional travel costs every fortnight. Vale of Clyde President Brian Kelly and his willing “team” of summer volunteers have been working around the clock to tackle a number of essen-tial jobs at the trim Tollcross ground. On the playing side - follow-ing back-to-back relegation campaigns - seven players quickly agreed new terms. The list includes James McKinstry, Chris Paul, Ally McManus, and Paul McBride. However, Jamie McKenzie has decided to take up the vacant manager’s position at Forth Wanderers, and new Beith boss Stevie Easton (previously with Petershill ) has agreed a deal which will see ex-Clyde signing Jay Lang depart for Bellsdale Park. Fixtures are out for the Sec-tional League Cup plus all divisions of the domestic pro-
