The Freshlink firm, known locally as the old McKellar Watt factory, is profitable but the parent firm has decided to close it. The firm is owned by Irish food magnate Larry Goodman, and produces around 500 tonnes of frozen sausages and formed meats a week for retailers around the country, including large supermarkets like Tesco and ASDA. Generations of East End families have worked there since leaving school and to think of the place closing down would be a travesty. Margaret Curran MP told the Re-Gen this week, “This factory must be saved and the workers here need help now. Many of the staff have worked here for decades and this is a profitable firm. If the Scottish and UK governments work together with the staff and the council, that is the best way forward to save these jobs. I welcome the decision by Glasgow City Council to launch a task force to look at possible options for the factory and the commitment given this week by the UK and Scottish Governments that they would contribute to these discussions. I was pleased that Michael Moore, Secretary of State for Scotland came to visit the factory today and meet with representatives of the workforce to hear their concerns. I will continue to fight alongside employees and their local trade union officials to try and save this vital local employer.” Speaking after the meeting between Fergus Ewing MSP and representatives of the workforce at Freshlinks in Glasgow, Labour MSP for Glasgow Drew Smith said: “I welcome the meeting and the commitment from Fergus Ewing. “He agreed to be involved in the taskforce that the city council is setting up to put the best possible case to the company for keeping the jobs in Glasgow. “These jobs are absolutely vital to the city and we need to do everything we can to protect them.” Mr Ewing Minister of Enterprise is committed to saving not only the threatened jobs but also is looking at an expansion to the factory which in the last few weeks has been under threat. John Tonner (Usdaw) stated, “When this process started we all felt it was a ‘fait accompli’ and the company would be moving out of Scotland completely, now we are far more optimistic that we will be based in this area for a while yet.” Frank McAveety, local Labour Councillor, welcomed the progress made: ”Along with my Labour colleagues Margaret Curran MP and Drew Smith MSP I have given full support to the workforce and Trade Unions to keeping the factory open. With the City Council and the Scottish Government on board I believe we can put together proposals that can hopefully make the company think again about moving from Scotland. It is our number one priority and I know that my colleagues and I have been at the Taskforce and in the Government Minister’s office pressing the case to save jobs. That is all that matters right now”. HRH meets BCD

McKellar Watt Crisis -Fresh HopesEAST END Labour representatives, Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety, Councillor for Shettleston, have expressed their concerns over the situation at the Freshlink factory in Old Shettleston Road, where over 220 staff have been issued with 90-day consultation notices. AWARD FOR GLASGOW COMMUNITY SAFETY SERVICES

GLASGOW Community Safety Services (GCSS) has, along with Strathclyde Police, won a pres-tigious industry accolade at the recent IFSEC Security Industry 2012 Awards.

Officers attended the cer-emony, held in Birmingham, and picked up the Best Policing Part-nership gong. Johann Watson, Head of Operations & Technol-ogy at GCSS, is extremely proud of her team and delighted that they have been recognised for their collaborative work with po-lice colleagues. She said: “We are delighted to have this official recognition for the work we do with Strathclyde Police, to com-bat crime in the city and make

local communities safer for the people who live there.

“Everyone at GCSS is commit-ted to making Glasgow a safer, cleaner and better place for people to live and work, and I would like to thank all our em-ployees for contributing to this success.” Chief Superintendent Grant Manders, of Strathclyde Police, said: “It is very pleas-ing for the strong partnership between Strathclyde Police and Glasgow Community and Safety Services to be recognised with this award. “It demonstrates that when organisations work together to keep people safe, great things can be achieved and we are very proud of all of the

people who worked hard and brought this to life.” Judge and Event Coordinator Douglas Read said: “Glasgow Community and Safety Services represents the perfect liaison between a city council and the local police ser-vice aimed squarely at fighting crime and improving the envi-ronment for residents and busi-nesses alike. “It’s a truly holistic partnership founded on an intel-ligence-led approach, covering everything from offender man-agement through to antisocial behaviour, safer streets schemes and alcohol and drug rehabilita-tion programmes. Indeed, the sheer scope of the issues being addressed is hugely impressive.”

ON Thursday 17th May 2012 Councillor Sadie Docherty was voted by her fellow councillors to the post of Lord Provost.

This is a tremendous hon-our and one which is well de-served as the new Lord Pro-vost has worked tirelessly as a community representative pri-or to becoming a Councillor in 2007, for the Linn ward. The Re-Gen caught up with Lord Provost Docherty in her of-fice at the City Chambers last week and during our meeting we found her to be a very ami-able person who is certainly switched on as far as the needs of the City of Glasgow are concerned.

Married with two grown up children Councillor Docherty has always been interested in local politics and although she was heavily involved with housing with Glasgow District Council and then with GHA, her objective was to become a local councillor as she felt she had a lot more to offer the people of the City. This has been proved over the years as Councillor Docherty certainly made her mark by dealing with constituents problems in a fair and diplomatic way.

It was no surprise when Councillor Docherty was made the Council’s Executive Mem-ber for Communities and Hous-ing and she was also Chair of the Policy Development Com-mittee responsible for Sustain-ability and the Environment

and also Children and Families. To this extent she has a great working knowledge and exten-sive experience of the Council making her very conversant with the workings of the City.

The new Lord Provost is cer-tainly a “People Person” and her communication and organ-isational skills come to the fore when she is within her com-fort zone mixing and meeting people.

Councillor Docherty is proud to be a Glaswegian and she feels her role in life is to do her best for the City of Glasgow.

Asked what she would like to achieve during her term in office the Lord Provost told the Re-Gen, “I would love to improve the aspirations and expectations of the citizens of Glasgow, particularly in these difficult times.

I intend to engage with Glasgow’s Citizens at every level to promote greater pride in our City as a great place to live, work, visit and invest in”.

With Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games this is a tremendous time to be involved within the City and showcase Glasgow worldwide.

What this does is, to ensure that there will be a lasting legacy for the City and I intend to play my full part in this pro-cess.”

To give the citizens of Glasgow an insight into how people friendly The Lord Pro-vost is the Re-Gen witnessed

her going to an event recently and as she crossed George’s Square she stopped and intro-duced herself to not only fellow Glaswegians but also to visitors from abroad and although this may not strike many as being important we can assure you that those she met were de-lighted to not only have met the First Citizen of Glasgow but also that she had taken the time to shake their hands and introduce herself.

It certainly left a last-ing memory in many hearts. Councillor Docherty is looking forward to the vast diversity in her role as Lord Provost with the fact that she will be attend-ing Gala Days and local events one week and then, meeting and greeting the Queen, mem-bers of the Royal Family and important worldwide dignitar-ies the next.

Glasgow’s Lord Provost is also Lord Lieutenant of Glasgow and therefore the Queen’s official representative in the City.

In this capacity, the Lord Pro-vost hosts visits by all mem-bers of the Royal Family to Glasgow and events relating to the Armed Forces, for example, Remembrance Day plus Armed Forces Day and she will also present Honours and Queen’s Awards on behalf of Her Maj-esty.

The Lord Provost of Glasgow is a tremendous honour and, for a woman from Castlemilk,

who set out to fight for her neighbours rights and latterly for the community of Glasgow, (because that is what we all are when it comes down to it), it is fantastic recognition and shows in just what high es-teem, she is thought of by her fellow peers.

The Lord Provost position is a demanding one and it is ac-cepted that it needs a strong person to perform the duties that go along with such a high profile job.

The Re-Gen can re-assure our readers that, in Lord Pro-vost Sadie Docherty, Glasgow City Council has chosen well and chosen wisely.

We wish her unparalleled success in her new position and we are look forward to her showing, by her words and deeds, that Glasgow is a place to be proud of.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

This is a time to get communications clarified, especially with younger people although mercury is in a backward motion you still have the energy of mars to push you forward with this it may mean ending a difficult relationship but as with all endings it brings in pastures new. Although this seems a heavy place there is still room to Party and your mood lifts from Sunday.

There may be a need to delve into the past and you may have to regurgitate old emotions as people pour out of the closet of time gone by, you have grown and evolved so don’t be intimidated. On a high with intuition a new door opens and promises success, partnerships favour well as long as you stay focused.

Although your ruling sign is going backwards, lady luck is still with you this week, you just have to remember to keep it simple and honest, no story telling or it could bite you on the bum next time around, it seems as if destiny is helping you move forward and you are being projected into new height, enjoy!

As a water sign you are known for your procrastinating, you seem to think there is no way forward well I am here to tell you different, it is time to look at want you want and who you want, let go and allow your dreams to become a reality as the timing is right, trust your instincts.

As the sun enters your sign this week you feel your spirits lifting, despite the position of Mercury’s backward motion your relationships become more open and all problems vanish in a puff of smoke, time to put the past behind you and begin a new, partnerships favour well of the romantic sort if you are attached a thrill of passion awaits, if not watch out for the dishy Aquarian.

For those focused on their career there is positive new as you seem to have put a difficult time behind you now and opportunity knock, your ruling planet Mercury is retrograde to you have to watch what you say as it could be misconstrued, as the moon is in your sign this week and you express your emotions freely, just remember who has helped you, what has been good for you before opening your mouth!

As the sun enters Leo this week it will help you top over analyzing situation which is making you a little paranoid, it is time for you to get back into the world of the living, socializing and adventures are back on the cards as you embrace this new phase, emotions are high on the agenda and a catch up with old friends is needed.

At last the secrecy of your emotions is about to be unleashed as you can now pinpoint what you want from long term relationships including the one with yourself. There are choices coming to do with work and Jupiter brings luck in a business relationship, just remember to dot the i’s and cross the t’s as we don’t want poor communication to hinder either of these events!

It may have seemed difficult of late as if you’re on a treadmill but with the combinational effect of the Moon and Mars this week things are beginning to look up. The right people are brought to you at the right time and work becomes smoother at last, Venus is also in your sign and this helps bestow love in your emotional life.

After a period of difficulty we can now look forward to things becoming somewhat easier, you must remember to communicate this month and to do it clearly and concisely as things could get twisted otherwise. The moon connects to your ruling planet Saturn helps you dealing with emotions with family and partners for a much happier and lighter mood.

A difficult situation around you is now coming to an end and you can look back next month and see this was really a blessing in disguise that feeling of being stuck is lifting as you now move forward. Try to think before you speak as you are not the most diplomatic sign and Mercury is retrograde, the moon this week and the sun in Leo will help give your love life a welcome boost

A week to remain grounded and pragmatic, keep thing real this week and pay particular attention to documents and ensure they are read and understood before signing. Your mind is in the clouds so it is important that you keep to reality and make decisions on facts. Some of you are ready and indeed in need of a welcomed break.

Glasgow’s leading independent funeral directors Anderson Maguire have just opened another funeral home in the East End. Located at 658 Alexandra Parade, close to the Royal Infirmary. the new facility bridges the gap between the firm’s funeral homes in Springburn Way and Shettleston Road. “We have a large number of families in the Garngad, Townhead and Riddrie areas who use the company when they have a bereavement and this will be more convenient for them” said Angela Maguire, part of the management team at Anderson Maguire’s head office. ”More families than ever are now using our company. They recognise that we offer to very high level of personal service at a very moderate cost, something which is very important to families especially in the current economic climate” said Angela

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

City Building apprentices know the score when it comes to healthy livingHealth and Safety Awareness Day at Queenslie Training Centre promotes good work practiceCITY Building has underlined its commitment to good working practice by holding a Health and Safety Awareness Day for all of its third year apprentices.

Guest speakers at the event included Jack Ross from PFA Scotland (Professional Footballers’ Association).

Ross gave a talk on the theme of gambling awareness as part of an overall awareness programme that has been successfully rolled out to Scottish football clubs. It informs people of the dangers irresponsible gambling can pose to their careers and personal lives.

City Building is Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction company. With turnover of around £200 million, it is one of Scotland’s largest construction firms.

The purpose of the day was to support the apprentices who took part and ensure they feel confident about talking to supervisors about any health and safety issues.

City Building apprentices also got the opportunity to update their knowledge on a range of topics including working at heights, personal PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), uniform and manual handling.

Apprentices also received information from the NHS on Healthy Working Lives in order to further complement their training programme.

Cllr Paul Carey, chair of City Building, said: “At City Building we take employee health and safety extremely seriously. Events like this one mean that all our apprentices are fully aware of their responsibilities when it comes to staying safe in the workplace.”

Dr. Graham Paterson, acting managing director of City Building, added: “These events are crucial dates in our calendar. As a leading apprentice trainer in Scotland we want our workforce to be as well informed as possible.

“As a large employer, the health and wellbeing of our workforce is important to us. Therefore getting this message over to our apprentices will stand them in good stead in their future lives.”

The event was also attended by Health at Work. The organisation aims to ensure that all employees have the opportunity to work

in ways that allow them to improve their health and well-being.

Debbie Nelson, Health Improvement Senior at Healthy Working Lives, who attended the event, said: “Our mission is to assist with staff health, wellbeing and safety standards and make sure that we have a healthy and motivated workforce in Scotland.

“It’s excellent that City Building has embraced our campaign and their staff and managers will reap the benefits of this joined up approach to health and wellbeing at work.”

IT is exactly two years until the opening day of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and preparations all across the city are being made at a tremendous rate.

The Clyde Gateway communities in the East End and South Lanarkshire will be heavily involved in the Games. COLLEGE LEARNERS WIN AWARDSThe annual Robert Bennie Awards ceremony took place at John Wheatley College’s East End campus.

Each year, tutors nominate students who have achieved their goals in the face of great challenges and this year’s twelve award winners were no exception. Many of John Wheatley College’s learners encounter problems such as bereavement, family break-up, disability, homelessness and serious illness during the course of their studies. Each of these award-winning students had overcome some difficulty in order to continue their studies, showing remarkable courage and commitment, and many had provided support for fellow-students into the bargain.

The Awards are sponsored by the Robert Bennie Trust, set up after young Robert Bennie’s tragic death eleven years ago as the result of a road accident. The funds are intended to assist young people in the community and encourage participation. Mr Donald Goldie and Mr Duncan McLean from the Robert Bennie Trust attended the ceremony, as did friends and relatives of Robert.

Each of the twelve Robert Bennie Award winners received a certificate and gift token with their proud families, friends and tutors cheering them on. The awards were presented by Andy Woolley, Chair of the College’s Board of Management and Duncan McLean, Trustee

of the Robert Bennie Trust. Guests at the ceremony included the marvellous staff who had encouraged and supported the students throughout the year.

Some of this year’s award-winning students had initially come to the College through the many partnership arrangements which the College encourages. This highlights the importance of collaborative working to provide strong support networks for many students during their learning journey.

Andy Woolley, who retires this year from his role as Chair of the

Board of Management, said,“These remarkable students

are a prime example of the difference that John Wheatley College and its partner organisations can make to people’s lives by providing a framework and support for learners to reach their goals. The hard work and commitment is, however, down to the students themselves and, in the challenging months to come, the College will continue to deliver a service which will support people all over Glasgow and help them to access the many opportunities

out there.”The delighted students and

West of Scotland Housing Association (WSHA) is currently exploring the benefits of a partnership with Gentoo Group. The two organisations are currently in discussions to find out what a partnership could mean and the benefits it could bring to tenants.

Duncan McNaught, Chief Executive of West of Scotland Housing Association said: “We are exploring a potential partnership because we are looking to the future and the financial challenges that all housing associations will face in the next few years. These challenges include welfare reform which is likely to reduce the income available to all associations, and the need to invest more money in our houses to achieve higher energy efficiency targets which could help protect our tenants from rising energy costs.

“We need to adapt, and believe it is not an option to do nothing in the face of the challenges ahead.” WSHA believes that making this positive change will make the Association fitter for these challenges. It will help ensure the Association continues to be able to provide the best homes and services possible for its tenants and communities in the long term.

Gentoo Group is a well established housing provider and regulated in England by the Homes and Communities Agency. With a strong track record, throughout the years it has demonstrated commitment to high standards, good quality homes, and strong communities. More than just a housing association, Gentoo is about improving lives by investing in people, the planet and property based activities.

The two organisations therefore share similar values and a strong cultural fit with similar aspirations around creating sustainable communities and homes that are fit for the future.

Duncan continues, “We have been impressed by what we have seen in our discussions with and visits to Gentoo. We are now looking in detail at what real benefits a partnership with Gentoo could provide.”

If West of Scotland Housing Association joined Gentoo Group it would stay as a housing association registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator as well as keep its name and ownership of its housing. WSHA will still employ its own staff, work from its present offices and remain being governed by its own Management Committee. Most importantly, tenants will keep their existing rights and their landlord will remain as West of Scotland Housing Association. Gentoo Group would be WSHA’s parent body and set the overall Group strategy.

Duncan concludes, “These are exciting times for the Association, this partnership has the potential to provide new solutions to the challenges we face.”

Association to explore benefits of a partnership

“Providing the best homes, services and communities for our tenants”

Warm welcome at Athletes’ Village to celebrate ‘Two Years to Go’ milestone for Glasgow 2014Monday 23 July marked exactly ‘Two Years to Go’ until the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth GamesTO celebrate the milestone, the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee welcomed three Scottish athletes to the site of the Athletes’ Village in Glasgow’s East End. Visiting the Village allowed all three to get a first glimpse of what the 6,500 athletes and officials coming to Scotland in two years’ time will be calling home.

Designed with input from athletes, the Village will be right on the doorstep of Celtic Park, venue for the Opening Ceremony in two years’ time, the new Commonwealth Arena and the spectacular Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which will both be open later this year.

The location and proximity to key venues further demonstrates Glasgow 2014’s commitment to making this a truly athlete centred and sport focused Games, the site in Dalmarnock will bring a legacy of 700 new homes and 620 jobs to the city.

Former Scottish hockey player Rhona Simpson, who has stayed in the Athletes’ Village at three Commonwealth Games and two Olympic Games, was invited to the East End site to see how the Village was taking shape. Rhona was joined by two young athletes who aim to experience the atmosphere of an Athletes’ Village for the first time in 2014, swimmer Ross Muir and long-jumper Jade Nimmo.

Rhona, who is the athlete representative on the Glasgow 2014 Board, was impressed with how far the Village has progressed since the start of construction last year.

Rhona Simpson, Scotland’s most-capped hockey player, said:

“With the eyes of the sporting world firmly on London 2012, I’m incredibly proud to be marking this particular milestone at Glasgow 2014’s Athletes’ Village. The excitement being generated by the Olympic Games will only increase the anticipation and desire the people of Glasgow and Scotland have to welcome the athletes of the Commonwealth back to the UK in two years’ time.

“The focus at the Organising Committee is to ensure the Athletes’ Village provides the comfort and convenience needed by today’s performance athletes. The development is still in construction but with ‘Two Years to Go’ until the Games, it’s fantastic to witness how well the Village is progressing and to learn more about the venue that will be home to the athletes in 2014.”

On Wednesday 23 July 2014, people from around the globe will be celebrating the Opening Ceremony of the Games and the start of 11 days of world-class sporting competition between 71 Commonwealth nations and territories.

As momentum gathers towards Scotland’s biggest multi-sports showcase, the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee and Games Partners are making positive progress towards the Games across a wealth of areas. Progression at the Athletes’ Village and other venues across the city are a clear indicator that planning

towards the Games remains on track and on budget.

Lord Smith, Glasgow 2014 Chair said:

“Athletes are at the heart of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and our commitment to delivering an athlete centred and sports focused Games is springing to life as we mark the ‘Two Years to Go’ milestone. It’s great to see the living accommodation for 6,500 athletes and officials starting to take shape and to see the world-class venues that are starting to emerge from building sites across Glasgow and Scotland.

“Across the country thousands of people of all ages are starting to engage with the Games in so many different ways. The pace is quickening and we look forward to sharing the next stage of a journey towards delivering an outstanding Games of which Glasgow and Scotland can be proud.”

Michael Cavanagh, Chairman Commonwealth Games Scotland, said:

“The Athletes’ Village is the heartbeat of the games and it is important that it provides a home from home for the athletes from all

71 Commonwealth nations, regions and territories. Team Scotland has had considerable input into the planning of the Village and the facilities it will have, to ensure this goal is achieved.

“It is fantastic to see that the development work is now well underway and remains on schedule. This will give great reassurance to all the Commonwealth Games Associations around the world and enable them to plan with confidence for the Games. Our athletes and team staff are really excited about the prospect of Team Scotland being here in the Village in exactly two years’ time ready to perform with distinction and make their country proud.”

Shona Robison, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, said:

“This is an important milestone in the countdown to Glasgow 2014. With only days to go until the start of the Olympics, and Glasgow hosting Olympic football at Hampden later this week, excitement is building.

“I hope that we can maintain this momentum and inspire communities across the country to get involved in the Games and to celebrate the fact that this amazing event is happening right here in Scotland. Construction at the Athletes’ Village is progressing

well and is another reminder that these Games are on time, on budget and on track to be a great success.”

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council said:

“The Athletes’ Village will provide a wonderful home for the thousands of competitors from across the Commonwealth in 2014 and it’s fantastic to see the tremendous progress that has already been made in its delivery as we reach two years to go before the Games.

“I am sure that the Athletes’ Village will prove to be an ideal base for everyone competing at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and equally sure that once the last athlete has gone, the site will become a fantastic new neighbourhood for the city.“

Ed Monaghan, spokesperson for the City Legacy Consortium said:

“With Two Years to Go, work is on schedule in creating the Athletes’ Village. Not only are we creating new jobs for people in the local area, after the Games, the Athletes’ Village will provide a vibrant new community with amenities, public spaces and housing, most with riverside views and only 3 miles from Glasgow’s city centre.”

The Athletes’ Village is at the heart of one of the UK’s largest regeneration areas, bringing a legacy of new homes and new jobs to Glasgow’s East End.

The site is being developed by the City Legacy Consortium which includes CCG, Cruden, Mactaggart & Mickel and WH Malcolm each of whom have decades of experience of creating jobs in Glasgow.

After the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Athletes’ Village will transform into an exciting new residential community with houses and apartments for social and private housing. The private housing will be offered at affordable levels.

BEAT THE HEAT BY KEEPING YOUR HOME COOL AND GREENWHEN those sticky-steamy days of summer heat up, it’s such a relief to crank up the air conditioning and enjoy. But did you realize that half of all the energy that your home is sucking up right now is tied directly to cooling it down? That can be tough on the environment and your bank account. So here are a few crunchy ideas that will keep you cool and save you some money!

Run those fans

Yes, fans use electricity too. But running them properly can actually take some pressure off your air conditioning. For ceiling fans, make sure it’s rotating in a counter clockwise motion. When your fan goes counter clockwise, it produces a breeze and allows all that cool air from your air conditioning to circulate. Efficient use of ceiling fans could allow you to raise your thermostats four degrees.

Sunblock for your home

Pull those shades, draw the curtains and close the blinds! Don’t let the sunlight heat your home, especially when you’re not even there. This is perfect for those of you who spend most of your day at work or school. If you

keep your shades pulled, then by the time you return home in the evening, the air will be nice and cool -- and you did it without putting extra pressure on your cooling system.

Give your appliances a break

Your stove and dryer put out a lot of heat. So use them in the early morning or evening hours when it’s cooler. Better yet, make use of your outdoor grill. Or air-dry a few of your heavier items -- like jeans and blankets. No energy used. More money in your pocket!

Keep your cool

Never underestimate a cold glass of water, ice cream or one of those multi-colored ice pops we all have in our freezers this time of year. They really do help keep your body temperature down, which means you don’t need to blast the air conditiong.

Put your air conditioning in holiday mode

When you leave for a holiday, set your thermostat a few degrees higher. Simply, it’s a waste of money and energy to air condition an empty house.

Ways To Save Electricity1. Turn off your television, video, hifi, playstation, and other entertainment devices when they are not being used.

2. Do not leave your television etc in standby mode. Devices can use up to 90% as much power in standby mode as when they are on, so it is a serious waste of energy when a device is left constantly on standby.

3. Cook many items at the same time when your electric oven is hot.

4. Use a microwave to reheat food or to cook small portions. Although a microwave uses a lot of power, it does so over a very short time and so saves energy overall.

5. Fold clothes straight out of the tumble drier while they are still warm to save on ironing.

6. Do not put uncovered liquids into the fridge. Their evaporation will make the fridge have to work harder.

7. Don’t keep opening the oven door. Every time you do so, your oven loses 20°C of heat.

8. Boil water in a kettle rather than on a hob to save 50-70% of the energy and to get your water boiled faster.

9. Don’t preheat the oven for roasting.

10. Defrost frozen food in the fridge since this helps to cool the fridge.

ROBBERY AT GROCERY STORE – PARKHEAD CROSS, GLASGOWOFFICERS at the Robbery Unit based at London Road Police Office are continuing enquiries following a robbery at a Grocery Store in Tollcross Road, Glasgow on Wednesday 18 July 2012.

Around 0850 hrs on Wednesday 18 July, the 30-year-old shop keeper was working within Cha-Cha’s Grocery Store in Tollcross Road, Glasgow when a man came into

the shop. He threatened the shop keeper with a knife and demanded money, cigarettes and his mobile phone from him.

The shop keeper handed over his mobile phone and the suspect ran out of the shop in an eastwardly direction along Tollcross Road. He was last seen in the vicinity of Sorby Street, Parkhead.

The shop keeper was uninjured but was left extremely shaken by the incident.

The suspect is described as white, around 35-40 years, 5ft 8, heavy built with a large stomach and spoke with a Glasgow accent. He was wearing a black jacket with a red zipper which had a distinctive yellow and black Ferrari badge on the

left breast, a grey snood which covered his hair, baggy light blue denims and black shoes. He was also wearing black framed glasses.

Detective Sergeant Gillian McKay at the Robbery Unit said:

“This robbery took place in broad daylight when many of the local businesses would just be opening and the general area would have been busy with pedestrians and traffic.

“We are currently carrying out extensive enquiries in the area which include door to

door and reviewing CCTV.“We have no doubt

that this man lives locally and someone in the community will recognise his distinct description.

“Anyone who knows the identity of the man responsible for the robbery who has left the shop keeper in a very distressed state is asked to contact our team.

“I’d also like to speak to anyone who may have seen the suspect hanging around prior to the robbery taking place or anyone who saw him running off afterwards.”

Anyone who has information that could assist enquiries is asked to contact the robbery Unit at London Road Police Office on 0141 532 4600. Alternatively calls can be made via CRIMESTOPPERS on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.

Knife CrimeOn the 5th July Pc’s Rae and Orr were patrolling along Bell Street, Glasgow when they

observed a male who appeared agitated. The officers went over to speak to the male to make sure everything was alright. Due

to the male’s behaviour when speaking to the officers, he was searched and was found to be in possession of a Swiss army knife. He was thereafter arrested and appeared at court the following day.

DrugsWhilst on uniform mobile patrol PC’s Kerr and Park of Esaterhouse community police,

stopped a car after seeing that the driver of vehicle was not wearing a seatbelt. While dealing with the offence the officers could smell cannabis coming from the

vehicle. The officers searched the driver and the car and found in the rear of the car bags

containing herbal material. The driver was arrested and a report sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

RobberyFollowing a robbery on Shettleston Road where a Male was robbed of his Methadone,

after he was pushed into a doorway by a male who held a weapon to his neck and threatened him before making off, the police were contacted and a description of the male was passed to officers.

Detective Sergeant McCartney and Detective Constable Paterson on receiving the description observed a male nearby matching the description. His details were obtained and passed to the Detectives dealing with the victim who were able to confirm with the victim that he was the male responsible.

The male was detained arrested to appear at court the following day.

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. Victo

ria Crosses have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE – NOTHING

LESS) th

ere is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St. Jo

hnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in such a short s

pace of time

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their emotions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers i

n an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all of a sudden are constru

ed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Firm

” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm

” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm

” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

VOLUNTEER’S WEEK THE GLASGOW EAST 5K FUN RUN & BIG DAY OOT IS BACK!

Cllr David McDonald, New MSP John Mason and First

Minister Alex Salmond pictured at the Accord Centre.

Edinburgh High Court has been listening to the horrific story of how a Bridgeton man met his death this week as three men stand trial accused of killing Brian Faulds last September. Christie brothers Paul and Adam have admitted murdering Mr Faulds and dumping his burned body near a bridge over the River Clyde in Glasgow. Paul Christie, 29, and Adam Christie, 27, pled guilty to murdering him at a flat in Dalmarnock Road in September 2011. Younger brother Bryan Christie, 22, admitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice by helping to move Mr Faulds’s body. Sentence on all three brothers, who are in custody, was deferred. Paul and Adam Christie entered guilty pleas during their trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. The court heard how they bound Mr Faulds with tape and repeatedly punched and kicked him on the head and body and repeatedly struck him with a knife, cleaver, axes, a hammer and baseball bat. As the Re-Gen went to press the Christie brothers, Paul Christie, 29, and Adam Christie, 27, have each been ordered to serve a minimum of 24 years in prison. Sentence on their younger brother Bryan, 22, who admitted helping to move Mr Faulds’s body, was deferred.

During the 2011-2012 campaign, Postal United received much-appreciated support from sponsors, The Lee (Bar and Lounge), St James Road, Glasgow, and Western Insulation Services Ltd, of Petershill Business Centre, Adamswell Street. Having resumed training at the end of June, officials quickly put together a pre-season fixture programme against the likes of Mill United, Ashvale Vics, Wishaw HSFP, St Mungo’s FP, Electric Bar and Drumchapel United. EASTHALL STAR are back in the amateur fold and have switched from Sunday to Saturday afternnon football. SUNDAY Central Amateur Football League membership appears to be booming, and the in-take of new clubs could exceed 20 following their change from Pyramid-style to a Premier/ Third Division format. Finnart AFC were top guns and achieved success at local and national level. Treble 2 finished in style and having lost to Finnart in the GlasCo Cup, they won the MediaSpec League Cup and clinched promotion. Should be an excellent Premier Division campaign with Finnart, Castlemilk Dynamo, Thornwood, Westhill, M.K. Dynamo, Beechwood, Whitehill (Formerly Sandymount ), Westburn, promoted Manhattan Blacks and Castlemilk United. Bottom two clubs will be automatically relegated and the next worst-placed drops into a play-off against the third top club in Division One. POSTAL United AFC players and officials are looking forward to another successful campaign following last season’s treble in the Scottish Amateur Football League. With the Premier Division title and Centenary Cup safely tucked away, United secured a hard-fought 3-0 win against Inverclyde in the Jimmy Marshall Cup final at Somervell Park, Cambuslang. Scorers were Peter McLellan (2) and James Smith. Incidentally, Postal’s triple success was only the second such achievement since the SAFL Premier set-up was formed. The club are always looking for new and experienced players to work with in training sessions at the East End Healthy Living Centre, Crownpoint Road. Call 07808295854, or check out their website:www.postalunitedafc.co.uk Former player John Hughes has worked hard to change things around at the East End club since coming back following a relegation campaign. He said: “The last two years have been great. I signed a few players, won the league and got us to the Scottish Amateur Cup semi-finals, where we lost 1-0 after extra-time against eventual 2011 winners Wishaw HSFP. “Last season, we progressed again with the treble, and were defeated by Glasgow Harp in the national trophy quarter-finals.” At their recent annual presentation, Michael Kerr was voted Player of the Year, Thomas Hollis took the Players’ Player of the Year vote, and Paul Freeman was Committee Player of the Year. Brian Hughes won the Top Goalscoring Trophy.

Thistle, who will be training two nights a week during the season at Bannerman and using Lochend School for Saturday afternoon home games, have lined-up a game against hosts Dennistoun Amateurs on Tuesday, August 7. PROMOTED Wellhouse Amateurs are back in the Premier Division, and will play Ashvale Vics, Bannockburn, Campsie Minerva, Colville Park, Drumchapel United, Harestanes, Kilsyth, St Patrick’s FP, Steins Thistle, Uddingston Anvil and Wishaw HSFP. Division 1A features Arthurlie, Cambusnethan, Chryston, Condorrat, East Kilbride, Eastfield, Greenock HSFP, Mill United, Redbrae, Stedfast and Stirling City. Garrowhill lead the charge for Division 1B promotion with Brightons, Cumbernauld Clyde, Drumchapel, Gourock Athletic, Grangemouth, Linwood, Mearns, Pollok, Scotia Athletic and Waterside. * Many thanks to Postal United AFC manager John Hughes, and Danny Rodgers (Sunday Central League) for their help in supplying information for the Amateur Football Round-Up. SHETTLESTON welcome Colgrain Bowling Club to Culrain Street at 1pm on Saturday. August 4. Almost 24 hours later, officials are staging the J.McLachlan Invitation Fours (10.30am). West Green (August 7) and East Green (August 9) will be closed prior

to Lanarkshire League games on Friday, August 10. Milton of Campsie are visitors on Saturday, August 11 (2pm). Other diary dates: August 12 - Seniors One Day Game (10.30am); August 19 - Cairns and Noble Invitation Triples (10.30am); August 25 - First Finals Day (2pm); September 1 - Second Finals Day (2pm); September 16 - Bobby Young Memorial (10.30am); October 5 - Ladies Closing Day; October 7 - Annual Bowls Meeting (12 noon), and Closing Day Game (2pm). Garrowhill bowler Linda McDougall has qualified for the Scottish Ladies’ Singles Final at Ayr’s Northfield greens, and Laura Welsh will compete in the Junior Singles event. Laura has been picked for Scotland’s Under-25 Ladies’ tournament team. BLACKHILL and MOUNT VERNON

have been crowned N.E. League Division 1 and Division 2 champions respectively. In their play-off at Riddrie, Blackhill won silverware despite a spirited display by Mount Vernon, who are promoted alongside North British, St Rollox, Whitevale and Kirkhill. Dropping down into Division 2 are Rutherglen, Carmyle, Parkhead, Baillieston and Belvidere. My thanks to Secretary Alex Morrison for his round-up of the campaign, which was blighted by several clubs sending/phoning through late results. This prevented him up-dating Re-Gen Sport on a regular basis, and clearly needs improving next season. FOXLEY Bowling Club will again host the Jubilee Trophy finals in September. The competition starts early August

PRE-SEASON games commenced on July 21, but the real junior action starts with the Central Sectional League Cup on Monday, August 6. Holders Petershill kick-off with a home game against promoted St Roch in Section Three. Three-times relegated Vale of Clyde could use their Section Four games to gel a much-changed squad for life in the Central District Second Division later in the month. FIXTURES: SECTION THREE. Monday, August 6 - Petershill v St Roch; Bellshill v Thorniewood (6.45pm). Wednesday, August 8 - Thorniewood v Petershill; Shettleston v Bellshill (6.45pm). Saturday, August 11 - Bellshill v St Roch; Thorniewood v Shettleston (2pm). Monday, August 13 - Shettleston v Petershill; St Roch v Thorniewood (6.45pm). Wednesday, August 15 - Petershill v Bellshill; St Roch v Shettleston (6.45pm). SECTION FOUR. Monday, August 6 - Blantyre Vics v Vale of Clyde; Cambuslang v Glencairn (6.45pm). Wednesday, August 8 - Cambuslang v Blantyre Vics; Glencairn v East Kibride (6.45pm). Saturday, August 11 - Vale of Clyde v Cambuslang; East Kilbride v Blantyre Vics (2pm). Monday, August 13 - Glencairn v Vale of Clyde; East Kilbride v Cambuslang (6.45pm). Wednesday, August 15 - Vale of Clyde v East Kilbride; Blantyre Vics v Glencairn (6.45pm). Supporters should check with their local club in case of any fixture-switches due to ground improvements. DRAW for the first round of the sponsored New Coin Automatics West of Scotland Cup has produced home advantage for local clubs - both against Ayrshire District League opposition. Vale of Clyde entertain a Darvel Juniors team that finished third bottom last season with only four wins in 22 games. Shettleston await the visit of Annbank United, who secured fifth place but still trailed champions Maybole by 16 points. CITY SET FOR UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUEGLASGOW City Ladies F.C. have started preparations for the qualifying stages of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

The club made history last season by reaching the last 16, and were the only unpaid group of players in the tournament. That success, coupled with previous campaigns, pushed Glasgow City up the rankings and classed them as a No 1 seed. The draw could certainly have been easier. Group Eight contains the Scottish champions, PK-35 Vantaa (Finland), WFC Osijek (Croatia), and Moldovan newcomers FC Noroc Nimoreni.Vantaa and Osijek are rated two of the strongest sides in the qualification stages, while Nimoreni must be classed as unknown outsiders. Helsinki will host the Glasgow City games between August 11-16. Club General Manager Laura Montgomery told Re-Gen Sport: “To be among the top seeds is fantastic given we were one of the

bottom rank teams back in 2008. “We are obviously under pressure to ensure we progress out the initial stages, but our team rarely plays without pressure.” The Champions League format means the winner of each group, plus the two best runners-up, will join up with the 22 highest-ranking teams in Europe, who are exempt from first round qualification. Last season’s Scottish Cup winners and SWF Premier champions have strengthened their squad by signing Ashley McDonald and former Rangers top goalscorer Jennifer Callaghan, who both made excellent debuts in a crushing 8-0 win over hosts Falkirk. On target were Leanne Ross (2), Emma Mitchell (2), Callaghan (2), Julie Melrose and McDonald. Glasgow City top the league table at the half-way stage (11 games), scoring 91 goals and conceding

only four. Meanwhile, in a bold initiative officials are offering free coaching for youngsters on a weekly basis at Petershill Park. City’s youth policy only started two years ago. In addition to Under-11 and Under-13 teams, they recently set-up an Under-9

age group. Coaching will be available to any girl aged 7-11 years, and is being held every Wednesday between 4pm-5pm. There is no pre-register process - you simply turn up to work and learn from fully qualified Glasgow City Ladies FC coaching staff.
