HALF of the children in some areas of Glasgow are grow-ing up in poverty according to new figures released this week.

A child poverty map, created by the End Child Poverty campaign, reveals a huge divide between rich and poor districts.

Based on Council level wards, Calton has one the highest levels in Scotland with 49% of its children growing up and living in poverty.

Other parts of Glasgow are badly affected with Spring-burn (51%), Canal (42%), East Centre (42%) and Drum-chapel/Anniesland (40%) all registering high levels.

Local Councillor Yvonne Kucuk, who represents the Calton Ward, reacted to the news. She said:

“The news that so many children in the East End are growing up in poverty is shocking in a wealthy coun-try. The UK Government’s policies such as slashing

the real value of benefits and tax credits for low-paid families with children will make things much worse in the coming year.

“The average wage in the area is less than £18,000 a year, and falling. We need to see urgent action by both of Scotland’s Governments on improving access to affordable childcare, more apprenticeships and college places for local people, introducing a living wage in more parts of the economy, action to cut energy bills given soaring fuel poverty, and creating better-paying skilled jobs.”

The survey by the End Child Poverty campaign says one in five children in the UK are living below the bread-line. And experts are pre-dicting the number will rise from 400,000 to 800,000 by 2020 because of the govern-ment’s benefit cuts.

Enver Solomon, chair of the End Child Poverty cam-paign said:

“Far too many children whose parents are strug-gling to make a living are having to go hungry and miss out on the essentials of a decent childhood that all young people should be entitled to.

“The huge disparities that exist across the country

have become more en-trenched and are now an en-during reality as many more children are set to become trapped in long term poverty and disadvantage.”

Barnardo’s Chief Executive Anne Marie Carrie added: “Today’s statistics mask the individual stories of mil-

lions of children, whose life chances are being compro-mised by our nation’s failure to tackle child poverty effectively.”

A family is classed as being in poverty if its income is 60% or below the national average household income of £359 a week.

YourPlace first commercial factor to achieve top business award

YourPlace Property Man-agement has become the first commercial factoring organisation to achieve a highly-prestigious UK busi-ness improvement award. YourPlace gained Investors in People (IiP) Gold accredi-tation in recognition of the way it has improved services to customers through the way it manages and devel-ops its staff. The report stated: “You are now a truly transformed organisation with vision, values, learning and devel-

opment and structure all aligned.” The IIP Gold standard recognises best practice at the highest levels of people management. It rewards cutting-edge organisations for their operating practices in using Investors in Peo-ple to drive the business forward. The 44 staff at YourPlace, who were assessed for IiP Gold through a rigorous process, were praised by the assessors for their commit-ment to delivering customer

satisfaction. Jennifer Russell, YourPlace’s Managing Direc-tor said: “YourPlace staff are pas-sionate about the work they do for factored homeowners. This award recognises the support we are providing to help staff develop the skills they need to deliver excellent services to our customers.” Presenting the award to YourPlace Board members, Peter Russian, Chief Execu-tive of Investors in People Scotland, said: “This is a fantastic achieve-

ment for YourPlace. I would like to congratulate the organisation and its people on their commitment to continuous improvement and achieving the Gold standard. Investors in People offers a flexible, practical and easy to use business improvement tool designed to help or-ganisations and their people achieve their objectives. “I hope that more organi-sations in the area will be encouraged to sharpen their competitive edge by choos-ing to work with us.”

Chief Superintendent Andy Bates has warned the party goers to take care when they are enjoying them-selves. Speaking exclusively to the Re-GEN, he said: “These substances are un-reliable, unpredictable and potentially very dangerous. Users may believe that they have taken ecstasy, and it is very likely that they will suffer from a significant negative reaction. Symp-toms reported recently include increased heart rate, elevated core temperature and seizures. “These pills are not cov-ered by any form of quality control and this is supported by past forensic analysis. Users need to be aware of the dangers and understand the potentially devastating effect these pills can have on their health. “We are continuing to take this matter extremely seriously and every such incident is the subject of extensive police enquiries to establish the source of these drugs. Every effort is being made to track down

and arrest those responsible for selling these drugs as quickly as possible.” “Our advice is consistent. Drugs bought from the illicit market can be dangerous. I would strongly advise people to avoid such pills and report any information to the police or by contact-ing Crimestoppers anony-mously on 0800 555 111.” If you or someone you know has concerns about drugs or you would like to speak to someone in confidence, you can contact the charity helpline ‘Talk to FRANK’ on 0800 77 66 00 or by visiting www.talkto-frank.com.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

GO AHEAD FOR NEW DALMARNOCK COMMUNITY CENTREGLASGOW City Councillors look set to approve plans for a new £44m hub to serve the Dalmarnock area of Glasgow. The Dalmarnock Development Trust had been in discussions with Glasgow City Council for nearly 5 years as they looked for a new home for their centre. And now the Council has provided the land for the community hub. As well as the new centre, the ‘Community Hub’ will house GP services, a pharmacy, clubs and voluntary

organisations and even a bike shop that will serve customers right next to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.Local Councillor Yvonne Kucuk spoke to the ReGEN about the progress. She said: “I am absolutely delighted with the breakthrough. With the Council providing the land, we can see our dream of a new centre get even closer. “When a group of local residents met 5 years ago to talk about what the legacy of the Commonwealth Games

could be, we had 4 wishes: jobs, skills, housing and a new community centre. It is safe to say that the Games are well on their way to making sure we can achieve these wishes.“There is the newly opened skills academy that is training our young people, jobs that have been delivered in the construction sector, and new houses built all along Springfield Road. “We have seen and heard a lot about the physical legacy of the games that has been created with the

new sporting facilities in the area, but now we are seeing the social legacy.”The report that will go to Councillors this week will state: “The proposed hub building will be a two storey structure of approximately 2000 square metres.“It will include an employment training suite, doctor’s premises and community shop. “The council will negotiate a sale of land on the east of

the Emirates Arena site and are to agree to transfer the capital receipts to

the Development Trust, effectively giving the land for free.”

Venus entering cancer brings in issues to do with your home so it is a good time to get the family together around the table and plan for the future or long term; you may also decide that your home needs some re-decorating as you lavish it with some vibrant colour or luxury item.

You have the gift of seeing people for what they are this week, your x-ray vision allows you to see beyond the surface to what is really going on, this allows you to break free of others judgment and truly believe in yourself, a busy time ahead.

Your ruling planet Mercury has strong links with Saturn and Neptune and this is a time when career issues come up as well as your feeling of self-worth, a great time to realise your potential and make long term plans to move forward.

Venus enters your sign and starts teaching you how to deal with your own emotions, this helps clarify things in relationships for you as well as giving you a little boost of confidence, you seem to be making bid decisions now for the future and you decide if you want to keep the current life style you have or to change it, a month of real changes.

It is a dramatic time, but you do thrive on dram darling, a time for the spotlight as you pursue all your heart desires, a word of caution, sometime other people are taken in by the gentleness of a pussy cat, rather than the ferocious lion!

It is a time to tread carefully and to be alert, to all aspects of your life, listen intently to what is going on around you, yes there are exciting times ahead but caution is warranted. The new moon this Thursday brings in positive changes and Venus in Cancer gets thing cosy at home.

Your ruling planet Venus is moving into Cancer and this is really a big deal for you, as things about work and home may become more public than you would like, so be prepared to be put under the spot light, turn on that charm and use that inner wisdom and you will sail safely and happily into a new day.

There are strong links to holidays or people abroad, it is almost as if you can hear the sea calling you, time to make plans to get away from the humdrum aspects of your life, Venus moving into your sister sign brings a great boost to your emotions and brings out your fun side.

Life is a little erratic this next week or so, you will have to think on your feet! Saturn is in your work zone and ambition is flying high, remember not to bite off more than you can chew, a good month to keep it realistic the new moon on Thursday opens new doors and new possibilities.

Even though you may feel a little melancholy, the planets are lining up to bring you some good fortune. And mercury in your sign helps you get communication off to a flying start, have faith as there is hope on the horizon.

A sign who know what they want and yet your mind is in a state of flux, try to focus on your overall objective and fight for what you know is right. Your social life is about to take off, so keep a list of dates of social function as you are in demand.

With Neptune your ruling planet connection to mercury it is a good time to get creative, but not when it comes to communications, it is important that all communication is done in an open and honest way or it will come back to bite you hard, be warned Venus in your sister sign, brings love back into your home life and love and laughter surround you.

This month is all about staying calm and focused, be clear about what you want and how you are going to achieve it, self-discipline and will power are your key strengths, mercury is retrograde in a few days so make sure you’re your communications are crystal clear.

A new opportunity, possibly career advancement, this is as good a time to take risks in order to follow your dreams, if you want to change your life, do it now. A time of self-expression and a fresh start.

Your ruling planet mercury is about to go retrograde and you have to make decisions now, being unwilling or unable to make decisions will cause you to stagnate, have faith in your own wisdom and move forward, Intuitively you know what to do.

Too much work, not trusting others to help you, will cause stress related illnesses, believe it or not you are not invincible, time to look at the softer side of yourself and allow that charm and wit to manifest help in your life. There is a need to balance work and play.

Things are looking up, the end of a difficult situation, the winds of change are blowing and it is a favorable wind. This is a good time to make changed in your career, there could be a resolution of conflict now which allows you to move on.

Learning from past endeavours is a key success for the future, knowing a situation or a subject well will help you sort out the pit falls a time of relaxation after a period of stress, ending contracts and fresh starts prominent now, your ruling planet Mercury is retrograde from the 24th so make sure all paper worked is double checked before signing.

Time out is required in order to maintain a balance, in both home and working life, something is lingering in your thought which is causing you distress time to vocalize how you feel and mercury retrograde at this time is actually helping you to speak up.

Time to open up to the world around you, both your heart and mind, as you listen to others and accepting them for who they are and their “Story” will inspire you to ret depths of understanding and truths, someone may offer you excellent even though it is a little unexpected. Listen!

Something suddenly needs your attention immediately a time of the unexpected events, even though haste is required it is important that no decision is rushed, careful consideration is also important, passion is great self-assured wonderful but timing is impeccable?

You seem to be in the past more than the present and it is fine as long as you don’t spend too much time on issues you cannot change, time to take life full on and make decisions to ensure a happy and secure future for you, and if that involves others, then ensure it is on your terms.

A project you started in the last few weeks is now coming to fruition and with that some public recognition for all your hard work, a time of success and personal achievements; self-esteem is increase, the feel good factor and some unexpected luck too of the good sort!!

The universe seems to be bringing in a shift of relationships, new and interesting people are now in and around your current social and family circle, a happy time ahead, positive emotions and a feeling of achievement.

Toss the meat in the flour and fry in the oil until well browned. Add the barley and vegetables to the pan. Cook for a further 5 min. Add the barley, rosemary and stock. Bring to the boil and cover with a tight fitting lid. Reduce heat and simmer for 11/2 hours ensure you stir it occasionally to prevent it sticking.

ColcannonCooked mashed potatoesCooked shredded kale or Savoy cabbageButterCream

Mash the potatoes with plenty of butter and a dash of cream before beating in the cabbage. I like to pop under a hot grill to brown or into a hot oven for 10-15 min.

ChampCooked mashed potatoesButter Cream3 finely sliced scallions or spring onions

Again mash the potatoes with plenty of butter and a splash of cream before beating in the onion. Again I like to pop under a hot grill to brown or into a hot oven for 10-15 min.

Irish Soda Bread8oz plain flour1 carton of buttermilk1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda½ a tsp salt1 large egg

Sift the dry ingredients together. Make a well in the middle and add the buttermilk and egg. Fold in from the sides. You don’t have to work the dough, in fact the less you mix it the better, lighter and fluffier it will be. This is a rough almost wet dough.. Flour a baking tray. Flour your hands and mould into a rough circle. With a blunt knife Cut a large cross into the bread and bake in a hot oven 170c for about 30 minutes and it is golden brown. Tap the bottom and if it sounds hollow then it’s done. Allow to completely cool before slicing. I love a few slices with my stew, and a few slices with jam with a nice cup of tea later on.

Grilled & Marinated Summer Vegetables

Ingredients• 4 red peppers • 3 aubergines , cut into finger thick rounds • 3 courgettes , cut diagonally into finger thick slices • 4 red onions , cut into finger thick rounds • large bunch flat-leaf parsley, chopped • 2 garlic cloves , crushed For The Dressing - 5tbsp Sherry Vinegar, 100ml Olive Oil 1. Whisk dressing ingredients and some seasoning in a large bowl. Heat a griddle pan. Blacken peppers on all sides. Put in a bowl and cover with a plate until cool to touch.2. Griddle the other veg, without oiling, until charred on each side and softening. As they cook toss them straight into the dressing, separating onions into rings. Peel peppers, reserving the juice in the bowl, deseed and cut into strips. Toss in with the rest of the veg, then strain the juice over. Leave everything to cool, then season. The salad can be kept in the fridge for 2 days, but bring it out a few hrs before serving. Then stir through parsley and garlic.

One Pan Summer Chicken

Ingredients• 2 red peppers • large handfuls of basil leaves , torn • 1 plump garlic clove , sliced • 2 plum tomatoes , halved • 2 chicken leg quarters • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • 410g can butter beans , drained and rinsed

1. Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Cut the peppers in half lengthways and scoop out the seeds and white membrane, but try to keep the stalk attached. Stuff each pepper half with basil (but don’t use it all), the garlic and a tomato half.2. Snuggle the stuffed pepper halves alongside the chicken in a roasting tin. Drizzle the oil over everything and season with pepper and salt, if using. Roast the chicken and the peppers for 25-30 mins until the chicken is golden with crisp skin, and the peppers and tomatoes have softened and wrinkled. Lift the chicken and the stuffed peppers onto a plate, tipping the peppers so that the tasty juice drains into the roasting tin.3. Place the tin over a low flame and pour in a splash of water. Add the beans and stir well to release any sticky bits from the roasting tray. Stir the remaining basil through the beans and spoon them alongside the chicken and peppers.

Summer Sauted Potatoes

Ingredients• 1½kg potatoes , cut into small chunks • 4 tbsp rapeseed oil • 1 tbsp butter • 4 bay leaves • 2 garlic cloves (don’t worry about peeling) • zest 1 lemon • small bunch parsley , chopped 1. Place the potatoes in a large pan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5-8 mins until starting to soften but not falling apart. Drain and leave to steam-dry in the colander for a few mins.2. Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan. Scrunch up the bay leaves in your hands and add them to the pan along with the whole garlic cloves. Once the potatoes are dry, tip into the pan and season. Toss them in the pan and cook over a medium-high heat for 20-25 mins, turning often, using a fish slice so you don’t break them up.3. When the potatoes are crisp and golden, grate the lemon zest straight over and cook for 1-2 mins more. Taste for seasoning, then scatter with parsley and serve.

Summer Pudding Trifles

Ingredients• 600g raspberries • 50g golden caster sugar • 1 Madeira loaf (about 300g/10oz) • 227ml tub clotted cream • icing sugar , to serve 1. Set half the raspberries aside. In a bowl, roughly mash the remaining raspberries with the sugar. Cut the Madeira loaf into 12 slices, then use a round cutter to cut out rounds of the cake to fit 4 serving glasses. Beat the clotted cream until slightly thickened.2. Layer up the trifles in glasses starting with a slice of cake, then some cream and some mashed raspberries. After the final slice of cake, spread over some cream and top with whole raspberries. The trifles can be kept in the fridge for a couple of hours. Dust with a little icing sugar before serving.

PUPILS at Saint Paul’s Primary in Shettleston had a special delivery as 10 fertilised eggs and an incuba-tor became the responsibility of the Nursery and P2A class. The children successfully nur-tured their eggs into little chicks, both cockerels and hens. All classes came to visit P2a as the chicks were hatching and they looked on in amazement at the various stages of hatching from ‘pipping’ through to the chicks eventually emerging wet and weak from their egg shells. All classes were actively involved in the learning, with the whole school visiting and holding the chicks, viewing a presentation from P2a and designing a poster about the life cycle of a hen. The children in P2a also designed and created ‘chick homes’, recorded the chicks’ progress in daily diary entries, worked to-gether to ensure the chicks’ brooder

box was clean and warm and fed and watered the chicks twice a day. The nursery children worked hard to complete a display of their learn-ing about the life cycle of a hen, with fabulous drawings of the eggs and chicks they observed on a daily basis. To round off their time caring for and nurturing the chicks, P2a invited

their parents to their class to meet the chicks. Parents also had the op-portunity to see what the children had been learning, work with their children to create a poster and view a special presentation and perfor-mance. From everyone at the ReGEN, we hope the newly hatched chicks have a cracking time!

PRIMARY KIDS GET A SPECIAL DELIVERY

TWO youngsters from the East End have come up with an idea to make charitable organisations look smarter and save them money. Alex Macpherson (22) and Grant McManus (21) have to design and sell cost friendly T shirts and promo-tional items to charities in the North and East of the city. The idea has met with approval from grant awarding bodies such as ‘O2 Think Big’ and Unlimited. Having worked for various com-munity projects, the pair understood how valuable funding can be, with the less expended on basic work uniforms and business materials, the more money that is left to fund much needed projects in the community. Alex said: “We are planning to connect with

as many charity run projects as possible as no one else in Glasgow is providing this service or offering low cost work uniforms for under-funded projects. An average printed work shirt, individually would cost between £10 - £15 “We are offering to provide the same service for organizations with a charity status for as little as £5” Grant added: “All profits made from the project will be circulated back into the social enterprise for further production. We operate from and work in close part-nership with Fuse in Shettleston as part of the ‘Fuse Enterprise’ team.” For more information contact Alex or grant via emails [email protected] or [email protected].

BRIDGETON girl Danikka Stewart is hoping to do her family proud as she takes part in the Little Miss Scotland Competition this weekend in Glasgow. Easterhouse Woodland and Auchen-shuggle in Parkhead have been unveiled today (Tuesday 11 June) as one of a network of 13 Commonwealth Woods across Glasgow that are to be a legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The new £5million Cuningar wood-land park on derelict land opposite the Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village is also one of the 13 network sites. Communities across the Glasgow area are being encouraged to head outdoors, get active and enjoy the new network which includes woods that are well-established, boasting ancient trees and wildlife, to newly-planted woods and a riverside park that’s being created out of derelict land opposite the Commonwealth Games athletes’ village. Welcoming the new initiative, Shona

Robison, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport said:“This network of woods will be a legacy of the Commonwealth Games for generations of people to enjoy. “Many people may be surprised by the beauty of the City’s woodlands that they can enjoy right on their doorstep. This initiative aims to encourage more people into the outdoors whether they want to get fit and active or just sit quietly and take in the views.” Speaking at the launch, Susan Egel-staff added:“It’s important for children to be active and to get outdoors. The Common-wealth Woods are great natural play areas where families can enjoy a range of activities, have fun and get healthy. I hope they inspire children to become even more active and sporty.” A new website www.common-woods.org.uk has been launched

where people can find out where their nearest wood is and discover what they can do and enjoy for free and a leaflet – with a map showing the net-work of woods – is also being widely distributed.

“Spacious and Accessible -The Parking is FreeSpringburn Shopping Centre’s – The Best Place to Be”

MSP for Maryhill and Springburn Patricia Fergu-son spoke of her ‘delight’ as she attended the of-ficial opening of Benview Campus in Ruchill Park last month. The building, which has been up and running since last summer, houses Highpark and St Cuthbert’s Primary Schools, Benview Early Years Learning Centre and Highpark Learning and Communication Resource and replaces a number of former local schools includ-ing Ruchill, Our Lady of the Assumption and Wester-common Primaries. The £19m campus sits in an elevated position on the edge of the park with

spectacular views across the city from the dining area. The state-of-the-art school built by Glasgow City Council includes a media suite and library, conference room and games hall. The campus also benefits from a new floodlit seven-a-side synthetic pitch, and its park-side location provides access to the many natural resources on offer in Ruchill Park. The Labour MSP said: The new school was built as part of the Council’s com-mitment to providing our young people with the most modern environment in which to learn. Over recent years £550m has been invested in schools, with Benview being the most re-

cent investment in our area following new campuses in Milton and Keppoch. “The Council remains committed to rebuilding or refurbishing every primary school in Glasgow and plans to spend £250m over the next 5 years to achieve this. I will be working hard alongside my Council colleagues to ensure that our older primary schools benefit from this invest-ment. “I congratulate staff and pupils at Benview Campus for their hard work in mak-ing a successful transition from their former locations to the new shared site, and wish the school community well for the future.”

POLICE APPEAL AFTER TRIPLE STABBINGPOLICE in Glasgow are appealing for information after 3 people were stabbed in their garden in Carntyne, Glasgow. The victims, aged 21, 23 and 33, were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary following the attack in Gartcraig Road, on Friday evening. The suspect is described as white, in his 20s, with an athletic build. He had short, brown hair and was wearing a light grey hooded top with a white zip and three-quarter length white shorts featuring a black design. Police are treating the incident as attempted

murder. Det Sgt John Semple said: “The motive for this attack remains unclear and I am appealing to anyone who may have any information or knowledge to get in touch with us.“On that particular night, people may have been out and about, perhaps sitting in their gardens, enjoying the good weather and they may have seen or heard something which could assist our inquiries.“This can also be a busy road with cars and taxis and if you were in the area around the time of the incident, please do contact us.”

DEPUTY FIRST MINISTER GETS CONSTRUCTION OF £24 MILLION OFFICE BLOCK UNDERWAYA 16 month project to con-struct a £24m office began as Nicola Sturgeon MSP, Dep-uty First Minister, attended a sod-cutting ceremony at the riverside location in Dalmar-nock.

The work will see 120,000 sq ft of a five-storey Grade ‘A’ office, capable of be-ing the home for 900 staff on new site. The work will be delivered by leading UK construction and infrastruc-ture company Morgan Sindall. Nicola Sturgeon said:

“Investment in regenera-tion projects like these is vital for creating jobs and prosper-ity and improving the life chances of Scotland’s people.

“The Scottish Government has committed £16 million to the development of this new Dalmarnock facility, which will see the creation of 120,000 sq ft of high quality office space, safeguarding more than 300 jobs in the construction sector. It is al-ready clear that this develop-ment will help to stimulate economic growth in the area, with planning consent for a further 100,000 sq ft office space recently secured at a

neighbouring site.“Clyde Gateway is doing a

fantastic job progressing this regeneration project, help-ing to ensure the successful impact of the Commonwealth Games and its legacy for Glasgow’s east end.”

Neil MacDonald, the Chair of Clyde Gateway was on hand to welcome the Deputy First Minister to the site. He said:

“At £24 million, this is the biggest single contract let so far by Clyde Gateway. The offices will be built to the highest standards imaginable while the riverside setting so close to the motorway net-work and an extensive public transport system makes it the perfect location.

“Riverside East will be a game-changer in terms of what we can offer to the office and development mar-kets and marks the beginning of a complete transformation of this area along both banks of the Clyde. I’m also delight-ed that our use of community clauses in the contract will see 50 local residents benefit directly during the construc-tion phase.”

Eddie Carr, area director at

Morgan Sindall, said:“We’re pleased to be

part of one of the largest and most ambitious urban renewal projects currently being undertaken in Europe.

This office scheme is the first step in a project which looks set to transform the east end of Glasgow and the adjacent South Lanarkshire areas.

“Morgan Sindall has a strong pedigree in construct-ing large-scale office devel-opments and has delivered an array of iconic and impor-tant developments across the

country. Our business and, in particular, our project team is now looking forward to work beginning in earnest on the Riverside East office develop-ment.”

MSP visits Akwaba ScotlandGLASGOW MSP Bob Doris has visited a charitable organisation in Ruchill to witness firsthand the employment and volunteering opportunities available to local youngsters. Akwaba Scotland run a social enterprise and internet café, and work to integrate the local African diaspora with the wider community. The café sits on Bilsland Drive, and is well placed for locals to drop in and have a coffee or use the internet facility. Mr Doris said: “I enjoyed visiting Akwaba Scotland to see the work their volunteers are doing. “Akwaba were recently awarded funding from the Young Star Grants Programme, which they intend to put towards developing musical and football clubs for locals. Such activities are sorely needed in areas of the city where multiple deprivation remains a major issue. “Ruchill has benefited

from a significant number of new build homes in recent years, but as a community, it has never really had many facilities for locals to meet. Akwaba’s café – whose name means “welcome” –

is an ideal location for this.“Ruchill has become a much more diverse place in recent years, and the café provides a meeting place for Ruchill residents old and new. As well as offering a range of

training activities, the café serves to promote relations between the ethnic and cultural communities here. I look forward to continuing to work with Akwaba in the future.”

IN last month’s issue we told you all about rugby month in North Glasgow which was a great success culminating in the first local rugby tournament that the School of Hard Knocks Legacy team have taken part in. Following four weeks of intensive training from Glasgow Warriors stars Al Kellock & Murray McConnell, 14 young men from the project participated in a 3-way Social 10’s event played at local rugby club Allan Glens RFC. Organised by ng sports legacy, the aim of the event was to offer the SoHK team some match practice over the Summer against local sides – the event was well supported with Allan Glens RFC & Glasgow East also putting in sides. ng sports legacy co-ordinator Greg Cann said: “Credit to all who took part, it was a great success and there are now plans for a second event to be played at the end of June.”

TWO men have been arrested in Possilpark after cocaine with an estimated street value of £100,000 was found during a search of an address in Hamiltonhill Gardens. Officers from Police Scotland seized the drugs after they searched the flat in a morning raid last Saturday. The officers, acting under warrant, arrested two men aged 32 and 33 in connection with the seizure. Both men were due to appear at the city’s sheriff court on Monday.

COCAINE BUST LEADS TO TWO ARRESTS IN NORTH GLASGOW

AS the Commonwealth Games approach, an East End project aiming to involve more youngsters in sport has questioned its volunteers about what they want to see as a result of the Games coming to Glasgow. To mark National Volunteer week, Active Champions and Active Mentors were asked what being involved in the local legacy project means to them. Active East project is based in Glasgow’s East End and aims to increase the number of people taking part in physical activity and sport in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and champions the development of volunteers through physical activity and sport. Working with a range of community organisations including sports clubs, youth clubs and schools from Easterhouse into the eastern edge of Glasgow city centre, over the next four years Active East aims to help those who aren’t already active to lead a healthier life. “I want to provide leadership and inspiration to young people and I hope this has a positive effect on the community” said Active Mentor Alan Keane who also works with local organisation Includem. Alan is one of 6 Active Mentors who are supporting young volunteers from the East of Glasgow who are completing a bespoke programme tailored to their interests in sport and physical activity. When asked why they want to be Active Champions local young person, Daryl Campbell says, “because I enjoy

sport and I love taking part in activities and running them”. Daryl is part of a group of 3 young people who identified play training as something which could benefit their development and the wider community. They put together a funding application to the Active East small grants programme to buy in the services of local play experts PEEK to train them to deliver free play sessions within the Wellhouse area. These young Active Champions are volunteering with Connect Community Trust who had identified an area being used for anti-social behaviour so this will be the site for the new, safe, play sessions which will involve community consultation to let residents know what they are doing and why. One of the newest recruits to the programme, Darran Sheppard, believes that the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow is a great thing because it will help get more people involved in sport. His own ambitions are to become a successful boxer or coach and will be doing his volunteering in a local boxing club, encouraging more young people to get involved in the sport. He is inspired by Mike Tyson because he grew up in a bad neighbourhood, got into boxing and left his offending life behind.

Active East has young people at the heart of the programme, these young volunteers are driving the training which is offered which includes sports leaders to enhance leadership skills and build confidence, child protection and first aid. Sport specific training such as badminton basis and basketball getting started allows young people to be trained to support delivery in local clubs and initiatives. We have to be smart now, there will be an influx in people wanting to try out new sports having well trained young local people involved in our local clubs now, means we are ready for this interest the 2014 games will bring to the East of Glasgow. Councillor Archie Graham, Executive Member for the Commonwealth Games at Glasgow City Council has said of the project: “Active East is a great example of

how the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are already leaving a legacy for Glasgow. In their case, the young volunteers will use their skills to work with people and organisations in the east end of the city to increase participation in sport and improve fitness levels.” Ian Reid, OBE Chief Executive of Scottish Sports Futures said ‘Active East was officially launched by Catherine Granger in October last year. Since then our Active Champions have been volunteering in the heart of the East End Community making a significant difference to the local people and the charity’s that they have become an integral part of. This is only possible due to the support of our funders; The Robertson Trust, Big Lottery, Sport Relief and the charities who welcome the young people into their organisations.’

On Monday 10th June the Min-ister for Community Safety Ro-seanna Cunningham announced that Parkhead Youth Project were amongst 18 organisations that were awarded funding to Tackle Sectarianism. The Project was awarded a 2 year award of £91,245. The funding was allocated following a robust assessment process sup-ported by the independent expert group set up to look at sectarian issues in Scotland. Liz Mitchell, Project Manager said “This is a new and exciting award for Parkhead Youth Project it will enable us to employ a member of staff who will work alongside young people in a variety of settings in Glasgow North East including on the street. This worker will support young people to be involved as volunteers and peer mentors. As a result of this we hope they will develop an innovative programme

and toolkit which will educate, inform and challenge attitudes and behaviour around sectarian-ism not just of young people but of our community as a whole. At Parkhead Youth Project we are delighted that it is recognised that the involvement of the community is central to making progress to tackle this issue. We want to encourage young people

to celebrate the diversity of their communities and this will go some way in fulfilling just that. The good news didn’t stop there as Parkhead Youth Project also received the news that they had been awarded £4,785 which will be used to provide days out for young people during the school holidays. A great boost just in time for the Summer Programme.

The dreaded ‘bedroom tax’ will be coming into effect from April 2013. It is important to know if you will be affected. As part of the ReGEN’s Welfare Reform Awareness Campaign, we are highlighting this week the changes to those who are in receipt housing benefit. It is im-

portant to contact your housing officer if you think your benefit might change.Shelter Scotland and other housing charities have already highlighted the dangers that reform will bring. They have produced this guide for those with questions about ‘the

bedroom tax.’If you have a spare bedroom and you’re renting from the council or a housing association and getting housing benefit, then the amount of benefit you receive may be reduced. This is commonly known as ‘the bedroom tax’.

Reduced housing benefit if you have a spare bed-roomFrom April 2013 if you’re of working age, receiving housing benefit and renting a property that’s bigger than you need, it’s likely that your benefit will be reduced. If you have more bedrooms than you need for your household then you’ll lose a percentage of your housing benefit. This is referred to as ‘under-occupying’ your home or ‘the bedroom tax’.

How many bedrooms can I get housing benefit for under the new rules? These ‘under occupancy’ changes mean that you can only claim housing benefit for one bedroom for each of these people who live in your home:• a couple• an adult• two children of the same sex• two children under 10• any other child, except foster children and children who don’t normally live with you• a carer providing over-night care. This is the same as for people claiming housing benefit in the private sec-tor. However, the rules for people under 35 claiming

housing benefit and the limit on the number of bedrooms you can claim for won’t apply to council and housing associa-tion tenants.

How much will be hous-ing benefit be reduced by?If you have more bedrooms than you need then a percent-age reduction will be applied to your eligible rent for the purposes of your housing benefit claim:• 14% will be taken off if you have one extra bedroom than you need, or• 25% will be taken off if you have two extra bedrooms than you need. These deductions affect housing benefit claims for both new and existing claims from April 2013.

How can I pay for the rest of my rent?If you’re going to be affected by a deduction to your housing benefit then it’s very impor-tant that you prepare for the change before April 2013. There are several things you can do:• take in a lodger – renting out a spare room would bring in extra income, but get the agreement of your landlord first and check whether this will affect any other benefits that you’re currently receiving, the first £20 of any rent you receive won’t count as income on your benefit claim• ask for a contribution to your rent - your family members may be able to pay more towards your rent• move to a smaller property – you may be able to transfer to

a smaller property, speak to your council or the housing association you’re renting from to see if you can apply to do this • apply for a discretionary housing payment – your local council may be able to give you temporary support to help you stay in your home through a discretionary housing payment. If you can’t pay all your rent after the reduction you may have to think about finding somewhere else to live or you will risk falling behind with

your rent and possibly being evicted. Speak to an adviser in your area as soon as possible if you’re worried that this may happen to you.

Are there any exemp-tions to the ‘over occu-pancy’ changes? The reduction to housing ben-efit for households with extra bedrooms will not apply to:• pensioners• people living in shared own-ership properties• people living in accommoda-tion like caravans, houseboats• temporary accommodation• some exempt supported ac-commodation.

West of Scotland Housing Association (WSHA) is currently exploring the benefits of a partnership with Gentoo Group. The two organisations are currently in discussions to find out what a partnership could mean and the benefits it could bring to tenants.

Duncan McNaught, Chief Executive of West of Scotland Housing Association said: “We are exploring a potential partnership because we are looking to the future and the financial challenges that all housing associations will face in the next few years. These challenges include welfare reform which is likely to reduce the income available to all associations, and the need to invest more money in our houses to achieve higher energy efficiency targets which could help protect our tenants from rising energy costs.

“We need to adapt, and believe it is not an option to do nothing in the face of the challenges ahead.” WSHA believes that making this positive change will make the Association fitter for these challenges. It will help ensure the Association continues to be able to provide the best homes and services possible for its tenants and communities in the long term.

Gentoo Group is a well established housing provider and regulated in England by the Homes and Communities Agency. With a strong track record, throughout the years it has demonstrated commitment to high standards, good quality homes, and strong communities. More than just a housing association, Gentoo is about improving lives by investing in people, the planet and property based activities.

The two organisations therefore share similar values and a strong cultural fit with similar aspirations around creating sustainable communities and homes that are fit for the future.

Duncan continues, “We have been impressed by what we have seen in our discussions with and visits to Gentoo. We are now looking in detail at what real benefits a partnership with Gentoo could provide.”

If West of Scotland Housing Association joined Gentoo Group it would stay as a housing association registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator as well as keep its name and ownership of its housing. WSHA will still employ its own staff, work from its present offices and remain being governed by its own Management Committee. Most importantly, tenants will keep their existing rights and their landlord will remain as West of Scotland Housing Association. Gentoo Group would be WSHA’s parent body and set the overall Group strategy.

Duncan concludes, “These are exciting times for the Association, this partnership has the potential to provide new solutions to the challenges we face.”

BEDROOM TAX COMING SOON, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE CHANGES

BEDROOM TAX ALREADY BEGINNING TO BITE ACCORDING TO HOUSING ASSOCIATIONS

New research by the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) into the early impacts of the so called “bedroom tax” on social tenants and landlords, was published last week at a major conference. Leaders from across the social housing sector gathered in Glasgow for Reform or Re-Form, the SFHA’s Annual Conference on 6th and 7th June. In her opening speech Mary Taylor, Chief Executive, SFHA, launched the findings of “Bedroom Tax”...Early

Impacts, a survey of social landlords across Scotland, and highlight the need for further funding from the Scottish Government to help build genuinely affordable social housing. She said: “Since the so called “bedroom tax” came into effect on 1st April, we have been surveying housing associations and co-operatives across Scotland about their experiences of helping tenants who cannot meet the short-fall created by the under occupation sanction to access discretionary

housing payments (DHPs). “ This is one of the best measures of the early impact of the “bedroom tax” on tenant incomes and the finances of housing associations. We are seeing affected tenants race to access the limited £10 million available in Scotland for discretion-ary payments, which is unsurprising given the “bedroom tax” alone is expected to reduce Housing Benefit income for claimants by nearly £50 million in 2013/14, according to DWP’s own estimates. “Our research also shows that housing associations are already experiencing an increase in rent arrears, since the introduction of the new welfare reforms. This could compound the already significant financial challenges faced by social landlords, since the Scottish Govern-ment cut funding for investment in social housing by 53%. “If housing associations and co-op-eratives are going to be able to meet government targets to build new, energy efficient homes, then the Scottish Government must restore the funds cut from social housing. New supply of affordable social hous-ing cannot be sustained on less than half the funds originally budgeted.” Margaret Burgess MSP, Minister for Housing and Welfare, was a keynote speaker at the conference and dis-cussed how even in the first months of the under occupancy sanction, the impact of welfare reform for tenants and landlords has been significant. The Minister said: “During my time as Housing Min-ister I have seen at first-hand the dedication, commitment and effort of SFHA Board members and staff and the positive differences housing as-sociations and co-operatives make to people’s lives and local communities. “Despite Westminster’s cuts to our capital budget, the Scottish Govern-

ment has taken every opportunity to increase its investment in housing. By the end of April we had allocated £200 million additional funding for housing supply, bringing total invest-ment to almost £860 million in the three years to March 2015. “This substantial boost to funding will support jobs in the construc-tion sector and provide many more sustainable homes. I welcome the steps SFHA members have taken to bring forward projects to make use of these additional resources so that more homes can be delivered as quickly as possible.” The keynote plenary session, focused on the early and anticipated impacts of the new welfare reforms, will include a presentation by Jim McCormick, Scotland Adviser to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Jim Mc-Cormick, said: “The best way to reduce the benefits bill is to ensure wages pay enough to make ends meet and cover housing costs, along with a significantly greater supply of hous-ing to improve affordability. Housing Benefit is currently propping up a system that doesn’t work: across the UK as a whole, an extra three million people live in poverty after housing costs are paid. “By making poverty reduction the key aim of welfare reform, we

would save money currently spent on benefits, extra services and lost economic potential. In the meantime, hitting those on the lowest incomes through the bedroom tax and tougher sanctions will only serve to increase poverty.” James Tickell, Director of Campbell Tickell, is a renowned consultant on governance issues in the housing sector, and will be speaking about sound governance. He said: “These are tough times for housing associations, but tougher by far for the tenants and communities they serve. Good governance is vital at such a time – Boards need to be risk aware and strategic, but at the same time grounded in the reality of everyday life. “The decisions they make can affect the lives of thousands, hope-fully for the better, but sometimes not. Board membership is a serious job, needing serious skills and commitment. New kinds of part-nership between Board members and senior staff are emerging, with strong challenge matched by strong support, and better co-working on core issues. There is a real momen-tum to the governance journey of housing associations in Scotland, and the SFHA will have a key role in maintaining direction of travel and momentum.”

A landmark report recently confirmed the importance of sport to our city, helping to cre-ate and sustain employment as well as contributing to health improvements and community development. The report com-missioned by the City Council comes as Glasgow continues its preparations for the 2014 Com-monwealth Games and awaits the outcome of its bid to host the 2018 Youth Olympics. I welcome this report and the recognition that it gives to the sporting investment that has been made in our city. As a local MSP I have always fought for investment in local sporting fa-cilities and am delighted that this has been delivered over recent years with the development of a

gym and football facilities at John Paul Academy in Summerston and the Milton Community Campus, the development of the new state of the art complex in Maryhill and at Petershill, and the ongoing development of new bowling facilities in Springburn Park. I was Minister for Sport when our bid was made for Glasgow to host the 2014 Common-wealth Games. I was delighted to promote this as I knew the benefits it would bring. This was confirmed again recently with the announcement of a £2.4m scheme to train up 1,000 jobless young Scots during the Games. This scheme supplements the Council’s ‘Glasgow Guarantee’ - a £25m youth employment

programme, with support also offered to graduates and older workers. There is also excellent work going on locally to ensure the benefits of the Commonwealth Games reach our communi-ties. For example, the ng sports legacy project, part of ng homes, organises a range of free sport-ing activities for people of all ages . Finally, the City’s bid for the 2018 Youth Olympics has allowed the £250m regeneration of Sight-hill to be prioritised, delivering investment in the area 20 years earlier than originally planned. The outcome of the bid will be known on the 4th July and you can back the bid at—www.glas-gow2018.com

Two of the most serious problems arising from the recession following the financial cri-sis in 2008 which affect ordinary households are falling pay, and the surge in long-term unemployment. Both have terrible long-term effects on our society. Recent studies show long-term joblessness has risen as a propor-tion of total unemployment from just under a quarter to over a third since the downturn be-gan. In Glasgow North East over 1,900 people have been out of work for a year or longer, over four in ten of the area’s jobless people. Total pay in Scotland fell by almost a tenth be-tween 2007 and 2012, the joint third steepest decline of any UK nation or region. Pay has also become more unequal, with three in ten people in this area earning less than the living wage rate of £7.45 an hour, while the top 1% have streaked away with steeply rising pay packages. Although average working hours for full-time and part-time workers have recovered to pre-crisis levels, there has been a sig-nificant shift towards part-time and more insecure forms of work, and the drop in real wages leaves those in work desperate for

more hours to make up the lost cash. This under-em-ployment affects nearly one in five young people across the UK.

How would Labour address these problems if elected to form the next Government in 2015 given the difficult fiscal inheritance likely to be left by George Osbornes failed auster-ity policies? Firstly, by being true to our val-ues by stressing the paramount importance of work, and extending that right to hundreds of thousands more people currently excluded from the labour market. Across the UK, the difference in employment rates between2008 and 2013 means the country faces a jobs gap of some 930,000 to see a true jobs re-covery. In Scotland, the gap is proportionately largely than the UK as a whole. A jobs guar-antee policy to ensure that long-term and young jobless people would help increase the employment rate and also boost growth and tax revenues. Second, making early years education and affordable childcare a real priority at every level of government, to increase opportu-nities for women in particular to enter the labour market, and release the pressure on household budgets. In Scotland, there is a 9% gap between the employment rate for men

and women. By shifting spending benefit-ting the few to offer more hours of accessible childcare for the many, we could help nearly one million women across the UK into jobs by removing a crucial barrier to work. Third, building upon the success of the na-tional minimum wage by using the power of Government to encourage firms to pay work-ers a living wage where that is affordable. But to raise other pay rates, employees need to organize in the workplace and across indus-tries to get a fairer share of the wealth they generate. Recent figures show a welcome rise in the number of workers who are members of trades union, but in the private sector, only 12% of female workers are unionized. It is no surprise that levels of collective bargaining in some parts of industry such as call centres remains pitifully small. That needs to change to cut inequality in pay. Labour will address problems in our social security system at source, such as poor pay and the lack of hous-ing which has driven housing benefit spend-ing higher over the past five years, within an overall three year cap on structural spending. Even in a tough fiscal climate, by tack-ling joblessness, low pay, and re-prioritising spending in favour of infrastructure invest-ment, we can build a fairer society across the United Kingdom.

Unfortunately, the right wing agenda of Labour has been underlined in recent days. Their shadow chancellor, Ed Balls MP, has hinted that a future UK Labour Government may give Scottish pensioners a lower state pension than other parts of the UK. They are considering extending the same princi-ple to a range of benefits. Given that Scot-land is in a relative cash surplus, compared to the UK, to the tune of £4.2billion, it is an outright scandal that a pensioner in Glas-gow should get less than a pensioner in Guildford. However, that’s the direction of travel - by Labour and Tory alike- if we stay in the UK. Labour, of course, support a bed-room tax and will retain Tory welfare cuts. This offers little hope to the 1,829 new cases taken on by Citizens Advice Scotland in April alone, due to the bedroom tax. It offers nothing to the 90% of housing as-sociations, who predict an increase in rent arrears as a result. This means less money to spend on basic repairs to housing stock. I would like to reassure readers that the SNP will do all we can to resist such right wing measures being forced on Scotland from London. However, only by controlling our own welfare system can such regres-sive measures against our pensioners and

those in social housing be p ro te c te d . This can only

be delivered when Scotland becomes an independent nation. Recently, there has been some excellent news for Scotland on the economic front. Outside the city of London, Scotland is the most attractive place for inward invest-ment in the UK. That means more com-panies, investing more cash and creating more jobs, than anywhere else on this island. In fact it’s at a 15 year high. This is testament to the policies of a Scottish Gov-ernment determined to improve Scotland’s prosperity, despite the continued onslaught of cuts to the Scottish budget from London. Imagine the further success we could have if Scotland had all the levers of power over our own economy. In recent weeks I have also been work-ing in Parliament to improve the situation of Glaswegians in a number of ways. I spoke in the Scottish Parliamentary de-bate on chronic pain, and I supported the Scottish Government’s plans to develop a residential specialist facility for those most affected by chronic pain. I also called for a clear and improved care pathway for the 14% of adults and 8% of children who live with chronic pain, and I am pleased to in-form you that the Scottish Government has

placed greater duties on health boards to deliver on these matters. I also attended a parliamentary event, held by the Family Fund, who receive cash from the Scottish Government and provide grants to families of disabled young people for family breaks. I met parents from north Glasgow at the event, who conveyed to me just how valuable this support is. Being deputy con-vener of the Scottish Parliament’s Health Committee, I am very aware of how such support is vital to both the health and emo-tional needs of constituents. Currently, I am working on an inquiry into access to new medicines in Scotland. The Scottish Government is keen for the Health Committee to report, in order that it may consider our recommendations. The Scot-tish system is self-evidently one of the best in the world, but with great strides being made in medical innovation, it is important that we improve it, in order to take account of changing times. The Scottish Govern-ment has already shown a willingness to do this by creating a new fund for young people to access a new wonder drug for Cystic Fibrosis. Many constituents appreci-ate how sensitive the system around ac-cess to new medicines is, and, how difficult it is to compare, for instance, the value of an end of life cancer drug with other vital medicines. I will update readers on the outcome of our inquiry in due course.

The UK Government’s programme of Wel-fare Reform is a further burden on people already struggling to make ends meet, as the cost of living continues to soar and the cuts start to bite.

By cutting support for the working poor and middle income families, the To-ries are sending a clear signal that they want our poorest communities to pay the price for the mess they are making of our economy. And yet, nothing has been done to tackle the rising long-term unemploy-ment that is blighting our poorest commu-nities. Here in Glasgow East, 3,660 people are without a job.

As Scotland knows all too well, the Tories, are happy to let vulnerable people and the working poor pay for their mis-handling of our economy.

Let us be clear, it is disabled people, children and those on low incomes that will suffer the impact of their sweeping welfare reforms.

But it is a sobering thought to think that the worse is yet come.

For example, the changes to housing benefit will see the introduction of a size

criteria, which will result in charges for rooms which are unoccupied. This will in-crease the bills for those Housing Benefit claimants living in the social rented sector by an average of £728 per year.

Housing Associations here in Glasgow have already expressed to me their con-cerns about this change and there is a real concern that many people will be pushed into expensive privately rented accommodation which will only serve to increase the benefit bill.

What’s more, cuts to Child Benefit will hit middle earners and will effect up to 280 people here in Glasgow East. It is simply unfair that some couples earning as much £100,000 will keep all their child benefit but one-earner families on just £50,000 will see it slashed. More incom-petence from the Tories.

My Labour colleagues and I support the principle of universal Child Benefit as we understand the additional cost of bringing up children. On the other hand, the To-ries are showing themselves to be out of touch with ordinary people.

Disabled people are being hit hard too.

The Disability Living Allowance will be re-placed with a new Personal Independence Payment which could see 25,000 disabled people give up their jobs because they can’t afford the extra costs of getting to work.

The Tories also plan to abolish Council Tax Benefit and devolve responsibility to local authorities with a 10% cut. Without ring-fencing the fund to ensure the poor-est and most vulnerable are protected, there is a real risk of adding to communi-ties’ problems, not helping them.

Of course, Scottish Labour believes you should be better off in work than on benefits - work should always pay. We believe in the value of work and the opportunities that it can provide. That’s why we introduced the minimum wage and tax credits. On the other hand, this Government seems more concerned with punishing the poor than giving them op-portunities.

I have heard from a number of con-stituents who are concerned about how these changes will affect them. By taking away child benefit from middle income families, cutting support for disabled people and help with council tax bills for those on the lowest incomes, The Tories are showing their true colours.

I was pleased that this week the Council has been forced to back down on controversial plans for a radical re-design of George Square.

George Square has acted as Glasgow’s civic centre for more than 200 years.

It has played host to Remem-brance parades, pop concerts, nativity scenes, Hogmanay hoo-lies, Olympic hero returns and the occasional office worker feeding sandwich crusts to the local pi-geon population.

But, for all that, it is currently a bland and tired looking advert for a city on the up.

So much work has been done in recent years to showcase

Glasgow, that it’s a disgrace George Square has been neglect-ed for so long.

However the city fathers at-tempted to plough on with re-development plans without any meaningful input from the public. Six designs were shortlisted, but there was little transparency in how they were chosen, and the consultation was a sham exercise, with Glaswegians given just nine days to register their views before the announcement of the winner on January 18.

A leading voice of sanity in this debate has been my council col-league, David Meikle, who was critical of the rushed way this pro-cess has been handled.

His view that we should pause and consider a seventh option is one that the public has supported, one which would still see the hated red tarmac ripped up – but would cost less, be appreciated more and add a softness and calm utility to a space designed for use by all Glasgow’s workers, resi-dents and visitors.

And now Glasgow City Council have seen sense and announced exactly that - a renovation instead of wholesale change. Although there are still some concerns about cost, I hope now that we can see a return to a greener space – with trees, borders and grass incorporated for everyone to enjoy.

As ReGen readers will recall, over a year ago health cam-paigners helped force the Health Secretary Nicola Stur-geon into saving Lightburn Hospital.

The successful campaign gave new hope to hospital us-ers and I was delighted that the Scottish Government had seen sense by keeping this vi-tal facility.

During the campaign it became clear that Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board had run down the facili-ties and services available in anticipation of closing the hos-pital for good. So it was im-

portant when Nicola Sturgeon announced that the hospital was to be saved, she made it clear that the services lost would now be restored and that money would be spent to improve the fabric of the building.

One of the driving forces behind the Save Lightburn Campaign was Gerry McCann of the East Glasgow Parkin-son’s Group. I met with him this week for an update on the progress of improvement works only to discover that after over a year, the hospi-tal has had no significant im-provement works. Staff still

do not have their canteen restored and have resorted to using a vending machine. The Scottish Government has not fulfilled their promise to restore Lightburn Hospital and health bosses in Glasgow need to be told to carry out the im-provement works urgently.

I will be requesting an ur-gent meeting with Alex Neill, the new Health Secretary, so that health campaigners, local Councillors and I can meet to discuss the future of Lightburn Hospital. It is important that the uncertainty ends and we can start to restore a much valued service to the East End.

It has been almost 100 years to the day since a suffragette named Emily Davison walked in front of the King’s horse at the Epsom Derby, simultaneously ending her life and cementing her place in history. Emily’s story is tragic and heroic in equal measure. A committed and long-standing suffragette, she believed passionately in equal voting rights for women and was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of change. Despite Emily’s actions, and the dedication of thousands in the suffrage movement, women did not receive the vote until 1918 and not on the same terms as men until 1928. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the significance of historical figures when the goals for which they fought have long since been achieved. That is why I think it is important that we use the 100th anniversary of Emily’s death to

remember the impact the suffrage movement had on the formation of modern Britain. Thinking about Emily’s life puts me in mind of an issue which has crept up the political agenda in recent years – votes at 16. In my 14 years as an elected representative in the East End, I have made hundreds of visits to schools and spoken to thousands of young people on all manner of subjects. I have always been struck by how engaging and politically aware they are and would therefore have no misgivings about extending the vote to 16 and 17 year olds. After all, how can it be right to allow our young people to marry, pay taxes and join the army but not grant them the right to vote for the people that represent them? I am pleased that Ed Miliband shares my view on this important subject and I look forward to seeing votes at 16 become a reality in the near future.

Those of us who live in Glasgow can’t help but notice the impact sustained investment has had on our city in recent years; from brand new homes, to refurbished schools, to world class leisure facilities constructed for the Commonwealth Games. In my constituency alone we have recently seen the opening of the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Tollcross International Swimming Pool. Both facilities are truly world class and I would urge local people, particularly young people about to begin their summer holidays, to make the most of having such fantastic facilities in their area. Yet more can always be done. It is crucial that we continue to invest in good community facilities to ensure that our young people have the best opportunities possible, and to maintain the strong sense of community spirit which makes the East End great.

I was delighted to pay a visit to the City of Glasgow College the other week, where I was invited to host their diversity awards and meet with members of the College management. It is certainly an exciting time for the College, with work beginning in the Summer on their £228m campus building project. The College - formed following the merger of the old Central, Metropolitan and Nautical Colleges - is one of the largest in the United Kingdom, with more than 30,000 students currently

enrolled. With over 2600 courses available and students from more than 135 countries, its reputation as a world class institution is well deserved. The plan will see the College redevelop its existing sites on Cathedral Street and Thistle Street, to create a vast new educational hub in the centre of the city. Architecturally, the new campuses will transform the skyline of the city centre. But the impact of the new college will go far beyond just buildings. Principal Paul Little has a real vision

for a college at the heart of the city’s economic development and one which meets the current and future employment needs of Glasgow and beyond. As the new building goes up, I know you will join me in wishing Paul and his team the best as they continue to build an institution that Glasgow is rightly proud of. As ever, if you wish to contact me about any issue please do not hesitate to email me on [email protected] or call my constituency office on 0141 357 2739.

Last week I organised a lobby of the Scottish Parliament with housing associations from across the country. The aim was to highlight the difficulty our community based housing providers have in building new homes while the Scottish Government slashes the Capital Grants budget. When the Labour Party left office in 2007, Community Based Housing Providers received just of £76,000 of Government money per unit to help them build new homes. After 6 years of the SNP, that level is now just £44,000. This dramatic fall in Government support has meant that new builds by local housing providers is all but stalled. Many of the cases I see at my surgeries are to do with

people’s housing needs. There is no doubt that building new homes can help alleviate the problems of overcrowding and improve the comfort and surroundings of the new residents. But it is clear that the SNP do not value social housing given their lack of support for it.Community based housing providers are about more than just providing affordable and quality housing. They are the building blocks for the whole community. Using their expertise in development they have built community facilities, help attract funding from various sources for community projects and strengthen the local economy by providing great employment opportunities. They also facilitate employment

opportunities with their work around social enterprises making it easier for tenants and residents contribute to the regeneration of their local area. With these SNP cuts, the very nature of the Community Based Landlord model is in danger of being lost, with big private housing companies mainly from England looking to take over.I only hope that the Scottish Government realise that they have their priorities wrong and that it is time they showed real support for our local housing providers. If you would like to contact me about this or any other issue then please do not hesitate to get in contact with me on 0141 564 1364 or by email on [email protected].

GOVERNMENT URGED TO HELP GLASGOW’S COMMUNITY BASED LANDLORDS

HOUSING Associations from across Glasgow descended on Holyrood in Edinburgh to tell the Scottish Government that they need help to continue to rebuild the communities that they serve. Tenants, staff and members of Management Committees watched a debate organised by Glasgow Provan MSP, Paul Martin. A Labour MSP is urging the Scottish Government to reverse cuts to housing subsidy, which he says are ‘putting at risk the very existence’ of the community-based housing association movement. The call came a day after the latest Scottish Government statistics revealed a 38 per cent drop in housing association starts in 2012/13 compared with the previous year. Mr Martin added that when Labour left office in April 2007, the grant per new build unit in Scotland was just over £76,000, compared with a current rate of just over £44,000.

He said: “Those cuts are putting at risk the very existence of our community-based housing association movement. The current funding environment has led to the growth of housing organisations masquerading as housing associations when, in fact, they are big businesses that operate from outside Scotland. “I am afraid that their interests are not the interests of our communities as seen in the community-based housing association movement; their interests are to ensure that they make a fast buck out of their investment.“They might be able to come in to build the houses and meet the targets that the government has set – they can do that as cheap as chips. However, they will not be able to do it in the effective manner in which our CBHA movement has done it for many years.”

The minister for housing and welfare Margaret Burgess said the government recognised the contribution of community-controlled housing associations. When asked by Mr Martin whether she would reverse the cut in the housing association grant, Ms Burgess replied: “If Paul Martin can come up with a strategy and show me where that money is in our settlement from the Westminster government, which is the same settlement that your government is going to carry on with, I will talk to you more strongly.“I emphasise that, every time that the Scottish Government has had an opportunity to increase housing investment in Scotland, we have done so. By the end of April, we had allocated £200 million of additional funding for new affordable homes, bringing the total investment to almost £860 million in the three years to March 2015.”

Parkhead Housing Association Host Youth Meeting

YOUNG people in Parkhead were in-vited to a meeting hosted by the local housing association to have their say about the future of their community. The group discussed a whole range of issues such as employment prospects, training for young people, quality of housing, safety of the streets and

youth activities. Around 30 people participated at the 2 hour event with the attendees gain-ing a lot from the afternoon. The organisers, Parkhead Housing Association in partnership with Clyde Gateway, would like to thank all those who took part in the event.

Accolade for Local Learning ProgrammeA PROGRAMME aimed giving residents in the East End of Glasgow employ-ability and personal development skills has been given a prestigious national award. The Thenue Housing Association ‘Learning Works’ programme based at John Wheatley College, has been awarded the national Scottish Learning Partnership Group Award for 2013. Running for 10 weeks at a time, the initiative has recruited groups of unemployed residents who have come on the programme to acquire skills and qualifications, helping them to become ‘work-ready’. The programme has proven to be a resounding success with all those who have completed moving on to a positive destination in work, volunteering or further learning. In addition to computing, communica-tion, health & wellbeing skills, learners also had input from Thenue Housing Association’s Money Advice Team which helped them with budgeting and organising their household income. John Wheatley College nominated the ‘Learning Works’ group for this prestigious award as the students had overcome substantial barriers to get through the programme and learners had been exceptional in supporting each other. Their win was announced at a ceremony at Holyrood and the Award was accepted by Tracy Lennon, Thenue Housing’s Employability Co-ordinator, and Irene Quinn, Head of Core Skills at John Wheatley. Charlie Turner, Chief Executive of Thenue Housing, said: “Learning Works is an important ini-tiative designed to help people in the East End learn new skills and ultimately find employment. “It is an excellent example of organi-sations working together to deliver

real opportunities for local people and we greatly value this partnership between ourselves , John Wheatley College, the Scottish Government and Clyde Gateway in making Learning Works possible.“And we are particularly delighted that the course has been recognised with this Award.” Alan Sherry, Principal of John Wheat-ley College, added, “We’re delighted that this innovative programme has re-ceived national recognition by winning such a well-deserved award, further evidence of the positive impacts that can be achieved by working in partner-ship. “It’s gratifying to witness local achievements which are funded and supported by local organisations like Clyde Gateway and, of course, Thenue Housing. Such initiatives benefit the learners, their families and the entire community. The students, and indeed the many staff who have supported them throughout their journey, are to be congratulated on this award.”

Housing Associations go to Parliament to have their say on Government’s policy

CALEDONIA Primary School in Baillieston was one of 5 Glasgow winners at the 2013 Scottish Education Awards, which was held on Monday 10th June. The school was honoured for its work promoting Gaelic language and culture within the school, picking up the ‘Gaelic Language Award’. Local MP Margaret Curran congratulated the school. The Labour MP said:

“The Scottish Education Awards are very competitive, so winning an award is no mean feat. Having visited the school myself, I have seen firsthand how well the parents, pupils and staff work together to create an excellent teaching environment. Everyone associated with Caledonia should be proud of its achievements.” “It’s great to see our city honoured in national awards.

The fact that Glasgow City won more awards than any other local authority is vindication of the Labour administration’s vast investment in education over recent years. “With every primary school in Glasgow also scheduled to be refurbished or rebuilt over the next 4 years, I am confident that the city’s schools will continue to go from strength to strength.”

A special ceremony at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, one of the venues for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, has marked the achievements of a group of locally-based young-sters in completing an intensive training course and then finding employment in the sports and leisure industry. A Clyde Gateway funded project, delivered by Street League and supported by Glasgow Life, has seen twenty-two Clyde Gateway residents, all aged 16-25 and pre-viously unemployed, be given jobs in a range of centres across Glas-gow, including the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. A number of them gave ac-counts of just how much their lives have been transformed as a result of signing up for the training course and then embarking on a career with Glasgow Life. 21-year-old Sam Maxwell left school at the age of 15 with no qualifications and no job pros-pects. Five years later she got involved in voluntary youth work through which she was persuaded to apply for what was a new training course Clyde Gateway was planning to launch. Sam passed her 12 week course with flying colours and left with

a clutch of certificates and like all qualifying students got the prom-ised job interview with Glasgow Life. Now working at the new Emirates Arena, she said: “This is really a new start in life for me. It’s amazing. The course has made me a better person. I have got my first job and even met my boyfriend on the course. My life has completely turned round since getting on the Clyde Gateway course. I never thought this would happen. I’m so lucky.” Stephanie Blair from Dalmar-nock told all the attendees at the reception that as an unemployed 19-year-old mother she had been struggling to make ends meet, but the course and the job had changed everything. She said: “I was amazed at how flexible and helpful the organisers of the training course were, allowing me to plan my participation around the needs of my two-year son. “I am thrilled at getting a job as a receptionist at Crownpoint Leisure Centre. I enjoy getting involved with the customers and the children who attend the centre’s nursery. I would love to stick with it.” Scott Magee, a 22-year old eas-tender, also heaped praise on the course organisers telling everyone

how he had struggled to complete the course when his grandmother died but the help of those from Street League and the friend he had made while taking part in the course had been a huge help. He said: “I saw her for 10 minutes the day before she died. It was a rough time. But I decided to keep going and complete the course, if only for my gran. It is what she would have wanted me to do and I’m so glad I did. I used to go with

the flow, but this is the first time I had things happen and I really feel as if I have achieved something through this course. Clyde Gate-way have made all the difference to the likes of me and countless others across the communities.” Clyde Gateway’s partnership with Street League and Glasgow Life has been extended to 2015 with hopes that a similar number of young people will graduate through the course and into jobs in the coming years.

Operation Myriad Police Scotland continues

to drive down crime rates across Glasgow as we enter the summer months. This time of year is notorious for an increase in anti-social be-haviour and warm weather and light nights often see an increase in street drinking and other associated crimes. This poses an opportunity for Police Scotland to imple-ment a large scale operation targeting not only anti-social behaviour, but also serious and organised crimes gangs operating in the Glasgow area.

Based on the highly suc-cessful Operation MYRIAD which ran within the legacy ‘Strathclyde’ force during 2012/2013, an operation was planned designed to tackle a variety of local issues to drive down criminality; reduce the opportunity for criminality to occur; and to increase public reassurance. Police Scotland is keen to listen to the communities and act upon the community issues that matter most to the communities them-selves. Operation Myriad will run over the summer months targeting different issues from road safety to gang fighting at the most effective times.

The operation began with a series of raids on properties in the Bridgeton, Parkhead and Maryhill areas follow-ing months of intelligence gathering and planning. The increase in police activity was designed to disrupt the activities of organised crime groups. On the first day of the operation drugs worth around £10,000 were seized which were no doubt destined to bring misery to the streets and communities of Glasgow.

Officers from CID and uniform gathered at London Road Police Office after which they were deployed in teams to various addresses across the north and east end of Glasgow. Doors were forced at these locations and the properties searched resulting in multiple drugs seizures. In one case a 28yr old male was arrested in connection with drugs of-fences after suspected can-nabis resin was found and in other incidents a 31-year-old man from Bridgeton was arrested in connection with alleged drugs offences and a 45 year old man was ar-rested in connection with alleged assaults.

Superintendent Brian McInulty who leads the op-eration said: “We are totally committed to disrupting the activities and lifestyles of those involved in crime.”

All in all it was a success-ful day for Police Scotland and the communities of

Glasgow who can now be spared some of the misery the criminals involved were committed to bringing to Glasgow. The operation was also aimed at sending a strong message to those involved in criminal activity and serious and organised crime.

Superintendent McInulty, added: “Previously, Op-eration Myriad was a huge success, and that is why we have brought it back. We want to get the message out there to the community.

“People will notice increased activity in their area and we hope they can approach officers with concerns.

“Ultimately, our main objective is to keep people safe.”

The operation is based on the highly successful Operation Myriad that was implemented in November 2012 during which more than 200 people were arrested or reported to procurators fiscal for drug offences during the initial phase.

Heroin, cannabis and cocaine were recovered and during the four-week cam-paign officers also recovered £310,897 under the Proceeds of Crime Act. In addition to this a total of 3758 people were charged for anti-social behaviour, violent crime and traffic offences.

The latest phase of Opera-tion Myriad will be reinforced by further phases throughout the summer in a series of intelligence-led operations across the north and north east of Glasgow and East Dunbartonshire. It is expect-ed that the public will notice increased activity in the ar-eas and they are encouraged to approach officers and pass on any concerns they may have so they can be acted upon. The message to the criminals is to ‘watch out’ as Police Scotland are commit-ted to Keeping People Safe!

Speeders Couldn’t Get Away Fast Enough!

A number of people have been reported to the procu-rators fiscal in the last week for speeding offences under the Road Traffic Regulation Act and the Road Traffic Act. In a ‘drive’ to increase road safety traffic officers have been out and about hi-visi-bility in an effort to prevent drivers from risking others lives on our roads! Sev-eral members of the public have since been reported showing utter disregard for the potential consequences of their actions behind the wheel.

A 38yr old male has been reported after driving at 78mph in 50mph limit.

A 19yr old male has been reported after driving at 91mph in 30mph limit.

A 32yr old male has been reported after driving at 48mph in a 30mph limit and also for driving without a policy of motor insurance place.

A 50yr old male has been reported for driving at 76mph in a 50mph limit.

A 37yr old male has been reported for driving at 89mph in a 60mph limit.

A 55yr old male has been reported for driving at 78mph in a 70mph limit.

In addition to these speed-ing offences several other road traffic offences were reported including a 44yr old male who had failed to update his current address on his drivers’ licence which still held the address he moved from almost 7 years previous!

A 26yr old female has been reported to the procu-rators fiscal for failing to obey a red traffic light and thereafter striking another vehicle with her car and a 34yr old male has been reported for driving whilst under the influence of such alcohol that his breath contained more alcohol than the prescribed limit. A 34yr old female was arrested having crashed her car and subsequently failed a road side breath test. The female thereafter failed to provide the two specimens of breath back at the police office as required by the Road Traffic Act.

Many of these offences could undoubtedly have ended in tragic circumstance if it hadn’t been for our friends the traffic cops!

HMP Castle Huntly – Ab-sconder

Police Scotland continue their appeal for information that could help trace the whereabouts of 22 year old Michael Murray – a pris-oner at HMP Castle Huntly, Longforgan, by Dundee. Murray, who is from the Maryhill area of Glasgow, was granted a period of home leave on Wednes-day 29 May and failed to return to the open prison when required to on Saturday 1 June.

He was imprisoned after appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court in November 011 after being convicted of robbery.

Murray is 6 feet 1 inch tall, of medium build, with short brown hair and brown eyes. He has relatives, friends and associates in the Glasgow area and Tayside Division is working closely with Police Scotland colleagues in an ef-fort to trace him and return him to prison.

Anyone who knows where Murray is or who has infor-mation that could assist the police enquiry should call 101 or speak to any police officer.

Bogus Worker ArrestedFollowing a recent increase

in bogus worker crimes a 30yr old male has been arrested in connection with 10 alleged bogus caller incidents in the east end of Glasgow. The alleged inci-dents took place on 2nd, 3rd and 29th May in Tollcross, Riddrie, Dalmarnock and Lilybank. This type of crime is known to have a lasting effect on those who find themselves victims and their families and Police Scotland urge the public to continue to be vigilant and report any persons acting suspiciously.

Drugs WarningPolice Scotland is issuing a

warning to the public about the dangers of two differ-ent tablets being sold as ‘ecstasy’ tablets.

The first tablet is white and has a ‘Mitsubishi’ logo imprinted on it. This pill has been analysed and contains the potentially dangerous chemicals 5IT and AMT.

The second tablet is yellow with a star logo imprinted on it. This pill has also been analysed and contains the toxic stimulants PMA or PMMA. It is similar in ap-pearance to the ‘Rockstar’ tablet.

Both these tablets are be-ing sold as ‘ecstasy’ and are known to be circulating in Glasgow.

The dangerous chemicals identified within both these pills have previously been known to cause users seri-ous adverse reactions. They

are unstable, unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

Detective Sergeant Michael Miller said ‘These two types of tablets are not covered by any form of quality control. Forensic tests carried out recently on ecstasy tablets have shown that they contain a cocktail of different substances. Any time someone takes

an ecstasy tablet, they are gambling with their life. I would strongly advise people to avoid these pills and report any information to the police. My message is clear – drugs are dangerous – don’t take them.’

Drug SeizureDrugs worth an estimated

street value of £23,500 have been recovered in the Garthamlock area of Glas-gow. The cocaine was dis-covered within the common close at a flat in Porchester Street and enquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

HOW TO SECURE YOUR GAR-DEN SHED

The following recom-mendations are intended to assist the householder to make the property less vulnerable to crime. Due to the general construc-tion of a garden shed it is not possible to make them completely secure.

LOCKThe locking mechanism for

most sheds is a padlock and hasp. It is recommended that the hasp be of strong construction, fitted to a re-inforced section of the door and door surrounds. The screws attaching the hasp should be inaccessible when the hasp is closed. The padlock used should be a closed shackle padlock, this prevents a thief from using a jemmy to force the lock.

HINGESA shed’s hinges are gener-

ally on the outside; this gives a thief access to the screws. It is recommended that several of the screws are either replaced with bolts, with the nut on the inside, or the screw heads are burred to prevent them being removed.

WINDOWSMany sheds are designed

with a window. If there is no requirement for this win-dow you should con-sider boarding it over. If you intend to use the shed for potting-up, or prefer the look

of the shed with a window, then it is recommended that you fit an ornamental grille inside the window.

PROPERTY WITHINMuch of the property

stored within the garden shed is of little interest to a thief; however, there are some items that must be secured. Ladders can be used by a thief to break into houses, lawnmowers and strimmers are of value and can be easily sold on, as can most tools, electrical of oth-erwise. It is recommended that either bicycle chains or a chain and padlock secure all property within a shed. Items should be chained to each other making it difficult to remove any one item. Property should be marked with either indelible marker pen or ultra violent security marker. Care should be taken when storing flam-mable materials. These should never be stored in large quantities and where possible should be locked away.

ALARMSThere are several local-

ised methods available for alarming sheds and garages from use of a person-al attack alarm, to motion sensors and door contacts available from all good DIY stores.

GENERAL GARDEN SECURITYWhere possible, gardens

should be enclosed by a 1.8metre high, open slat wooden fence, with the support posts facing into the property. This should have a lockable gate the same height, which should be positioned in such a way as not to create hidden areas. Vulnerable areas can be protected by the use of the defensive shrubbery, such as hawthorn or rose. Where possible garden furniture should be secured either by putting in a garage or shed at night or by the use of a chain and padlock. Pots or flower troughs should be made as heavy as possible to prevent their use as mis-siles. If small pots have to be used in a display consider securing them to something heavy with a chain. This can be done discreetly through a hole in the bottom of the pot.

BANNY COACH IS JUST CHAMPION

BANNERMAN High School (Baillieston) Under-15 football coach Jack McGillivray has heaped praise on his double championship-winning squad.

DOUBLE UP... Bannerman High School (Baillieston) have been crowned Under-15 Scottish and British Champions under much-respected coach Jack McGillivray.

Having already been crowned Scottish Schools Shield winners, Banny completed the double over Dunbar Academy in the British Isles Cup - a three-day tournament - at Toryglen Regional Football Centre. A proud Jack told Re-Gen Sport: “Who would have thought it - Scottish and British Champions! “These lads had never won a thing, but what an effort everyone has put in. All they needed was a bit of belief in themselves. I knew they could go all the way in the Scottish Schools Shield, which is a monster tournament with 175 competing teams. “After a first round bye, we

beat the likes of Lourdes, Ardrossan Academy, who had Rangers and Kilmarnock signings in their team, Buckhaven, Arbroath and John Ogilvie. When we beat the latter in the semi-finals, I knew we could overcome Dunbar Academy in the Tynecastle Park showdown - and we did 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.” The former professional football was delighted to see his youngsters rise to the occasion yet again at Toryglen, where they emerged from Section A which featured Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. The Friday night Welsh clash ended with Banny winning on penalties, while the

Irish were defeated 2-0. Dunbar, also representing Scotland, overcame England and Northern Ireland to set-up a re-match with Bannerman, and they appeared to bring most of the local population with them as they sought revenge for their Scottish Shield defeat. However, Banny dominated a one-sided first half, and two “screamers” from Cameron McKay put the Dunbar gas on a peep. Despite suffering a couple of second half injuries, the East End school team stood firm to show talent-wise that maybe things are not as bad as some people think here in Scotland.

Head Coach Iain King and his backroom staff have already been impressed with the talent on view at training sessions and friendly games against Boys’ Club and Pro-Youth teams. The latest encouraging signs came during a 5-2 win against Motherwell F.C. (2000 team) at K-Park Academy, East Kilbride. Three 30-minute periods were kicked-off in style, when Steven Robertson slid home their opening goal, and a Scott Simpson cut-back was finished by Andy Dallas. Robertson added No 3, and although ‘Well reduced the leeway after a raft of changes, normal service was resumed through Alberto Vezza and Kyle McDonald on the hour mark. Motherwell netted a second goal in the final 30 minute slot, and Fir Park Head of Children’s Football, Paul Burns, was very impressed with their hosts.

He said: “I think they will do us proud in the Denmark Cup. “It was heartening to see the West boys look to play possession football all the time, and play their way out of trouble.” Iain King revealed: “The players are progressing and their discipline in playing to the system we have set out has been excellent.” Meanwhile, West Region Under-19s stunned Drumchapel United Under-21 with a 5-3 friendly victory at Braehead. Matt Humphries (2) and man of the match Paddy Woods netted first half goals. United struck twice on the re-start, but Humphries raced clear to complete his hat-trick. Drumchapel replied again, and Kyle Gallacher wrapped up an excellent display with a fifth West goal.

KYLE GALLACHER... wearing No 17 blue shirt, netted for the SYFA West Region in their 5-3 victory against Drumchapel United.

CONTRACT changes within Junior football this week could have a major impact on future team-building plans - and clearly were not designed to help managers. That is the opinion of Petershill F.C. co-boss Willie Paterson, who reckons the expiry of the old player-retention rule will hit clubs right across the board. Last summer’s SJFA Annual General Meeting passed a vote to call time on clubs seeking compensation of 40 times a weekly wage for any professionally-registered player at the end of his contract. The prospect of being unable to recoup their initial outlay (transfer fee) through a further selling price has led to many managers planning ahead - although it is clear some have still splashed their cash! Said Paterson: “We know of some District League clubs who

TOWER HEARTS have won the National Lady Darling Supplementary Cup - after a dramatic extra-time victory against Cavalry Park Colts. A wonder strike from Steven McGregor put Cavalry ahead, but Graham Boyd headed home Willie Docherty’s corner kick before half-time. Tower hit the post and bar in normal time. The winner came after 100 minutes, when Mark Scott headed a John Allan free kick past ‘keeper Chris Joyce. Meanwhile ARSENAL B.C. lost 5-1 against Falkirk Athletic Under-21 in the Birdston Kennels-sponsored Glasgow Cup final at Greenfield Park, Shettleston. are paying guys £100 a week. They can’t keep spending that kind of money. “I honestly believe you will now find more players will be moving on from a club after only one season. They will try and get as much money as they can. “There has been a clear change in attitudes from my playing days at junior level. “Petershill started looking at our own position around Christmas. We negotiated some two-year deals with certain players to get us through this rule-change, but there is not enough in our club budget to finance the entire squad. “In any case, what we are now finding is some of them have been tapped by other junior clubs, who are offering them up to double what we originally agreed!“The big test, even for Super

WELLHOUSE WINCONGRATULATIONS to Wellhouse Amateurs after they won the Fosters Scottish Amateur Cup for the first time in their proud history. In a dramatic final at Livingston, ten-man ‘House, who had goalkeeper Darren Logan sent off in normal time, defeated Colville Park 4-3 on penalties after the pair fought out a 1-1 draw. David McKay had given Colville the lead, but Andy Dorrans equalised with a spot kick. Defender Graeme McLaren donned the goalie’s jersey after Logan’s dismissal, and was able to celebrate after Colville Park missed two spot kicks. Colville Park also lost out in the 2012 Scottish Cup final.

CELEBRATIONS ... left to right - John Conlin, Willie Paterson and Stevie Rankin after their Rutherglen Glencairn team beat Shettleston 4-1 in the Abercorn Builders Central League Cup final at

Newlandsfield Park, Pollok, on Friday, May 14, 1999.

EXCLUSIVE Premier Division clubs like us, will come at the end of next season. We could lose more than half of our team - and that is a worry.” Meanwhile, in a strange twist of fate, Paterson and co-boss Scott Smith are set to lock horns with one-time Rutherglen Glencairn manager John Conlin, who looks set to succeed Irvine Meadow-bound Stevie Rankin at Ashfield Juniors. Said Willie: “It will be good to see him back at this level. Among the memories I have from our time at Glencairn is the Abercorn Builders Central League Cup final against Shettleston at Newlandsfield Park in May, 1999. “As captain I couldn’t play due to injury. “ John was suspended and had to watch the game away from the dug-out, but he joined me and Stevie Rankin (who took the team that night) for the after-match celebrations after we won 4-1 and a photograph for the old Gen Newspaper.”
