In what looks like a “Party Politics” decision, instead of thinking about an area where nothing has basically happened for years, a coalition of councillors took the chance to get one over on their Labour colleagues by counting heads at a planning committee meeting and instead of voting for a new 500 plus housing development, ( which already had an all party agreement in place, meaning ALL Parties had agreed the original plan), and which would also incorporate a brand new State of the Art, Sports and Leisure Centre at the Lindsay Memorial Park, as part of the community benefit clause agreed with Millar Homes, and a new Bridge over the Railway at the “Hangman’s Brae,” they decided to oppose it. Millar Homes who are behind the development to build on the land between the old zoo and the area up to the new houses at Crosshill are appealing the decision and in the crazy situation which has now arisen, could probably claim the council for expenses for the appeal, given that the local outline plan had already been agreed by all parties in the council. This would mean that these councillors, who have gone against their own decision, could end up costing the tax payers more money, just to gain political points and deny the people of Baillieston a massive new investment which is certainly needed in an area which has been sadly lacking for years. In this present economic climate the Re-Gen would like to know how local councillors, supposedly acting for the residents of this area, turn down the chance to create construction jobs and opportunities which would create employment and also give the people of Baillieston a new leisure centre with all the facilities which the place is crying out for. This development has the potential to be the biggest inward investment in years for Baillieston and to vote against it is sending out the wrong message to those willing to invest in the area. Baillieston councillor David McDonald (SNP) who is moving to the Pollok area to stand in the forthcoming local elections spoke to the committee against the planning application and he was supported by Grant Thoms (SNP) for the North East ward, Craigton SNP councillor Iris Gibson, Kieran Wild (Greens) councillor for Canal in Maryhill, Paul Coleshill Lib Dem councillor for Langside and councillor John McLaughlin (SNP) who sits for the ward of Shettleston. Everyday we hear of hundreds of complaints why local businesses don’t want to open in Baillieston and we hear of “Fast Food” shops getting planning permission, seemingly “willy-nilly,” (22 at the last count – and we are questioning this too), and yet when there is a real chance of decent investment in the area we have councillors voting against it for what seems like reasons other than the good of the people who actually live in Baillieston. PLANNING DECISION COULD MEAN EVEN LESS FOR BAILLIESTONA crucial vote taken at the last City Planning committee could have severe repercussions for the people of Baillieston unless it can be overturned on appeal in Edinburgh.

East End Kids in World Harmony Run

Children from from various schools across the East End this week took part in the World Harmony Run which was set up to symbolize humanity’s universal aspiration for a more harmonious world.

Now in its third year, the run is still going strong and it reaches thousands of people in communities throughout the world as it promotes its message of peace and harmony to all.

Kids and teachers from St Anne’s Bridgeton, St Thomas’s Riddrie, Haghill Primary, Carntyne and Smithycroft Secondary all took turns in

carrying the World Harmony Torch a few yards each and be part of this worldwide project, before accepting the hospitality of Head Teacher Geraldine Parkinson at St Thomas’s Primary for a spot of lunch.

This year the torch will be covering over 35,000miles and travelling through 6 continents via more than 100 countries.

Other names who have carried the torch in the past include Muhammad Ali, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela so the local kids from this area have certainly joined the elite by taking part in this great initiative.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment.

Irish Lamb Stew11/2 lb of stewing lamb or shoulder cut into medium sized chunks2 tbsp of flour½ cup of barley2 onions chopped roughly2 carrots cut into 1 inch chunks1 ½ pints of lamb stock 2 tbsp oil1 tsp dried rosemarySeasoning

Toss the meat in the flour and fry in the oil until well browned. Add the barley and vegetables to the pan. Cook for a further 5 min. Add the barley, rosemary and stock. Bring to the boil and cover with a tight fitting lid. Reduce heat and simmer for 11/2 hours ensure you stir it occasionally to prevent it sticking.

ColcannonCooked mashed potatoesCooked shredded kale or Savoy cabbageButterCream

Mash the potatoes with plenty of butter and a dash of cream before beating in the cabbage. I like to pop under a hot grill to brown or into a hot oven for 10-15 min.

ChampCooked mashed potatoesButter Cream3 finely sliced scallions or spring onions

Again mash the potatoes with plenty of butter and a splash of cream before beating in the onion. Again I like to pop under a hot grill to brown or into a hot oven for 10-15 min.

Irish Soda Bread8oz plain flour1 carton of buttermilk1 tsp of bicarbonate of soda½ a tsp salt1 large egg

Sift the dry ingredients together. Make a well in the middle and add the buttermilk and egg. Fold in from the sides. You don’t have to work the dough, in fact the less you mix it the better, lighter and fluffier it will be. This is a rough almost wet dough.. Flour a baking tray. Flour your hands and mould into a rough circle. With a blunt knife Cut a large cross into the bread and bake in a hot oven 170c for about 30 minutes and it is golden brown. Tap the bottom and if it sounds hollow then it’s done. Allow to completely cool before slicing. I love a few slices with my stew, and a few slices with jam with a nice cup of tea later on.

Have a great week everyone,Love Susie x

4 Friday 23rd March 2012 Re-GENTHE

Hello everyone. I hope you have been all out enjoying the lovely spring weather we have had over the last few weeks. It was glorious on Saturday. A perfect day for the St Patrick’s Day Festival held in Coatbridge. It has run for a few years now and it really is a great family day out. The wean loved the music and having his face painted. The crowd went wild for the boxer Ricky Burns who looked positively overwhelmed. Despite being under the weather myself, it was a great day. So much so that I made an Irish stew, although I couldn’t bring myself to drink a Guinness. I have given you the recipe for both champ and colcannon so make whichever you prefer. Give the soda bread a try…it really is easy and can be used as a sweet bread with butter and jam or a savoury bread perfect for dipping up your gravy.

The spring equinox on the 19th and the sun entering your sign on the 20th see an action packed month ahead, time to put long term plans into action with gusto, remember Mercury planet of communication is still retrograde so check all information is accurate and it will be a good month.

The sun enters Aries on the 20th and this gives you a spring in your step as you come into your own in the spring, the alignment of Venus and Jupiter brings in luck and changes, getting it right this month and the rest of the year will go swimmingly!

With your ruling planet Mercury still retrograde you will have found communications chaotic and rather confusing as the planets realign you are now in a better position to trust your intuition and gather steam to push forward with ambitions this month with the fire of Aries behind you.

The new moon on the 22nd stirs your emotions into action in the home and at work. There is a shake up within you as you tackle promotion of self and you are taking no prisoners. As your sign is ruled by the moon and with mercury planet of communication retrograde please be tactful when dealing with loved ones.

There is still a lot of emphasis on work at this time and you need to take a look at what’s on your lap. Are these projects still viable have the goal posts moved, time to re-juggle and re-evaluate and remember where you want to be within the work structure, a good week for anything of a legal nature.

This week sees you getting an astro injection of energy from your sister planets, and you now have the energy and drive to make the big push to finish a task which you have been trying to avoid, remember to double check all paper work with mercury your ruling planet still retrograde.

A sign of partnerships this week see’s you looking at all your current relationships and possibly drawing a line through some. It is time to balance out your mind and make some long term decisions! The sun in Aries from the 2oth and the new moon on the 22nd gives you the green light for projects which make your heart sing.

New opportunities, new people and places it is all go for you this month, the energy of the sun in Aries sees you firing on all cylinders and with the spring equinox any plans you put down in September, October last year could come to fruition!

With the sun in your sister sign of Aries this week get ready to have some fun! It is a good month for those of you looking for work as opportunities seem to fall from the sky and these could lead into long term career plans. Reminiscing about the past can on some occasions be worthwhile, this is one of them, learn from the past and make the future better.

You can be a little bit of a pessimist at times but with the lineup of the planets in your sign and your sister signs it is time for optimism, as you seem to stroll aimlessly through career matters. Communications on the home front have never been a strong point and with mercury retrograde, you need to bring forward that sense of humor which can sometimes catch people off-guard.

You begin to see the benefits now of plans you put into action over the last few weeks and with the sun in Aries, planet of action it is now time to give the a big push forward, the spring equinox is a time of growth for you and a time of balance. Keep communications simple!

The new moon on the 22nd is a time to focus on new plans and getting them off the ground, Neptune your ruling planet is giving you the insight you need to achieve this, money matters need to be dealt with for the long term this month and the future will look better if you do!

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. V

ictoria Crosse

s have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE –

NOTHING

LESS) th

ere is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St

. Johnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in

such a short space of tim

e

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their e

motions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers

in an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all o

f a sudden are construed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Firm

” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm

” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm

” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

Glasgow’s leading independent funeral directors Anderson Maguire have just opened another funeral home in the East End. Located at 658 Alexandra Parade, close to the Royal Infirmary. the new facility bridges the gap between the firm’s funeral homes in Springburn Way and Shettleston Road. “We have a large number of families in the Garngad, Townhead and Riddrie areas who use the company when they have a bereavement and this will be more convenient for them” said Angela Maguire, part of the management team at Anderson Maguire’s head office. ”More families than ever are now using our company. They recognise that we offer to very high level of personal service at a very moderate cost, something which is very important to families especially in the current economic climate” said Angela

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

The Womens Centre in Easterhouse can breath a little easier this year thanks to a fabulous donation from the Shandwick Square Shopping Centre’s parent company British Land.

Thanks to Centre Manager Renia Tysler who encouraged the folk at British Land to make a contribution to this great cause, some of the ladies from the Womens Centre turned up at

the Shopping Centre last week to accept a cheque for £8750, which will go towards the running of the project.

This is the second donation in two years that British Land have made and the Womens Centre are very grateful to have such a tremendous benefactor on their side. Well done to Renia and her bosses at British Land for helping out another local cause.

Eight Visits in Eight HoursShadow Secretary of State for Scotland Margaret Curran MP took up a challenge from the Re-Gen Newspaper to visit the North East of Glasgow to see for herself just what is going on in the area and to meet the people behind the projects and discuss their hopes and aspirations.

By the end of the “Tour” we had laid out for her she was extremely well versed on what the projects were doing in their communities and she was very impressed by what she had encountered.

First stop was North Glasgow Housing Association where Ms. Curran had a very interesting meeting with Chief Executive Robert Tamburrini who explained the many ways North Glasgow Housing Association and NG2 were working in partnership not only to build quality homes for the residents of the Springburn area but also the way they were looking to take people off the unemployment register and furnish them with real jobs. Robert explained the introduction of equipment which made lives a lot easier in the area such as Street Cleaning machines and the various things they have introduced in their Sheltered Housing Complexes to make the residents more independent as far as day to day lives are concerned.

He also spoke of diversionary measures, working with other agencies,

which aim to give the kids and young adults in the area more involvement in leisure facilities and pastimes thereby weaning them away from hanging around aimlessly.

Ms Curran was delighted in the way the project is going and she left with a few things to get her teeth into thanks to Mr Tamburrini’s straight talking manner.

On then to a fantastic project in Queenslie namely the City Building Training Centre where she was greeted by Gavin Hay and shown a video of some of the great work being done there. Ms. Curran was introduced to four young apprentices in the Centre’s College annex and following a question and answer session with the lads who told her just how well they were doing in their chosen vocations, she then undertook a tour of the complex where she witnessed work being carried out by 1st year through to 4th year apprentices.

Some of the work was excellent and proved that there certainly is a need for such a Training Centre. Joiners, Plumbers, Welders and Painters, etc... were all keen to show just what they were being taught in this modern facility and Margaret Curran was suitably impressed.

Next stop was the Milnbank Housing Association where Alan Benson and his staff spoke of the problems the housing budget cuts being introduced by Holyrood would create, in their quest to continue to change the face of the Dennistoun area with new build housing and renovations.

Whilst there members of the Milnbank Housing Association committee were setting off for a week-end conference in Peebles and it took us all our time to persuade Ms Curran to refrain from going as we had other plans for her on the day. At least she made it onto the bus but thankfully the driver took the wheel from her and she was left to wave them all goodbye as the singing rang out from the busload of “happy campers.” We’re sure they had a great conference and hope they all returned safely.

A flying visit to AS Scaffolding in Glenpark Street to meet Andy Smillie and his staff turned out to be

very informative, as Ms. Curran praised the way in which “Big Andy” worked behind the scenes with good causes, whilst running a very successful business. He will be “BEALING” because we have mentioned him in dispatches as Andy is a very private person and prefers to project a different image, suffice to say he is certainly well thought of, both in business and personal spheres.

John Wheatley College was next on the list as Ms. Curran met with Principal Alan Sherry and following a closed door meeting between both, the Principal then introduced the Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland to Student President, Arlene King, who just that morning had received word that the Students Union had gained two awards for their campaigning during the fight against College cuts. Ms. Curran then met some of the Catering Students from the college before heading on to the

next part of the tour.Asda Superstore at the Forge was the next

venue, as Margaret Curran had heard about their excellent work not only in store, but also in the way they become involved with the local community throughout the year. The new community project the colleagues at Asda have been running is the “Chosen by You – Given by Us” project and Ms Curran heard how following every till purchase, the customers are given a token to place in one of three tubs relating to local projects and at the end of each month, the project with the most tokens is awarded £200 by Asda.

Manager Robbie McDonald and Corporate Affairs Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland, David Paterson, along with newly promoted, Divisional Community Life Champion for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Annmarie Rocks, explained

to Margaret Curran the way that Asda has been involved in local community projects since the opening of the store and continue to do so.

Dalmarnock Community Centre was next on the hectic list as we passed the new National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome which certainly impressed the MP. At the Dalmarnock Centre, Yvonne Kucuk (Centre Manager) and some of the young people and adults who, thanks to the work being done in the Centre, have turned their lives around dramatically, met Ms Curran and told her just how they had regained self-confidence and some were now able to have the courage to go on to University and continue to make vast changes in the area as they strive to gain a legacy from the Commonwealth Games.

Margaret Curran was so impressed with the work that was being carried out by Yvonne and the team she commented about becoming a community worker in the Dalmarnock area, praise indeed from someone in such a high profile position.

Finally we headed to Bridgeton and the offices of Clyde Gateway where Ian Manson (Chief Executive) had a quick meeting with Ms Curran before asking her to don working boots and a hard hat as her took her a trip around the new Red Tree Business Suite in Dalmarnock Road. This was an old decrepit building which was an eyesore in the heart of Bridgeton and thanks to the drive and effort of Clyde Gateway, it is now in the process of being transformed into a stylish and affordable high quality office block which will house around 28 office suites.

Not only will this attract more businesses to the area it will also be home to the Re-Gen Newspaper group as we have become the first local company to commit to taking office space in what promises to be a fantastic venue.

The punishing schedule we had set out for Margaret Curran had finally come to an end and by the look on her face she had really enjoyed meeting everyone and hearing their concerns and aspirations for the future. She has not only taken the problems that cropped up during the visits away with her, she also takes the knowledge that despite the economic climate we are all struggling through – Glasgow is still Miles Better.

WORKING parents especially depend on local nurseries and child care facilities and here in the East End we are fortunate enough that there are many in the area which have excellent staff and programmes set out to encourage children of pre-school age to attain the education they need as they prepare for starting school.

Visiting these projects you are struck by just what is on

offer as far as bringing the best out of the children is concerned and on our travels we have discovered that the staff treat working in child care and nurseries as a vocation more than just a job as they make friends with each and every kid in their daily life.

Parents are certainly depending on places like Happitots, Larchgrove and Rowantree nurseries to nurture their kids and look after them while in their care and given that the Care Commission and other such bodies have rigorously checked out the aforementioned nurseries and found

them to be of excellent standard should put their minds at rest.

Anyone who has ever attended any of the little plays, nativity shows, etc, the kids take part in, realises that it is those working in the nursery that bring out the best in the children and things like this only go towards getting them ready for Primary school. Away from the rigours of nursery there is a great escape for the kids at “Play Kingdom” next to the Forge Market where they can expend all their energy as mum and dad sit and relax in the Kings and Queens cafe.

Thanks to an award of £9,419 presented to Parkhead Youth Project for a Positive Activities Programme 18 young people aged 12 to 17 years enjoyed a weekend residential at Stroove House in Skelmorlie near Largs.

Along with the staff and volunteers they took part in the 10 mile cycle around Millport on the Saturday and various Development Sessions over the weekend. The young people came from all over Parkhead and all agreed that it was a great chance to meet new people and “have the best game of hidey ever”.

Liz Mitchell Project Manager said “The young people were fantastic, they worked well with the staff and each other. Although exhausting everyone gave it 100%. The Development and planning sessions looked at the services

of the Project. The young people spoke honestly about what we have to offer and how we can ensure that we deliver well attended programmes and also that our services are accessible and are wanted by the young people.

Liz said “They gave us lots of information and ideas that we will use to look at the way forward for the Project and we will ensure they are all involved in this process”. The residential was the first activity from the Positive Activities Programme funded by Cashback and there are lots more to come in the next few months. Last month Parkhead Youth Project were also successful in securing a Children in Need Award of

£35,155 over 3 years for the post of Part Time Youth Worker.

The number of service users has never been higher with the added bonus of an increase in young people wanting to volunteer and be more involved in the services.

There is a good buzz about the Project just now thanks to the hard work of the staff and the young people.

College Students’ Association Come Close at NUS Awards

John Wheatley College’s Students’ Association in East Glasgow were named as Runners Up in two separate categories at this year’s NUS Scotland Awards.

The two categories were ‘Campaign of the Year’ category for their gladiatorial support of the “Our Future: Our Fight” campaign against the government cuts to Further Education Funding and student support budgets, and the ‘College

Students’ Association of the Year’ category.

Formed back in September, the group of learners who make up the Students’ Association committed straight away to the fight against the proposed £74m budget cuts and reforms to the FE sector. The President and Vice President, Arlene King and Agnes Anderson, immediately got on board with the community petition which

was being organised through the local community newspaper. They, and their fellow Student Representatives, took the petition to the public by canvassing signatures at local venues and shopping centres in their efforts to support John Wheatley College’s future.

With the advent of the NUS Scotland “Our Future: Our Fight” campaign, the College’s Students’ Association took the cause to

their hearts and worked tirelessly to encourage people to sign up to the commitment.

To support this, they organised a Question & Answer session for students, staff representatives and local community representatives to confront the politicians on the FE sector cuts. Their tenacity bore fruit and elected members accepted their invitations - even the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, Mike Russell, agreed to come along to the Bridge in Easterhouse for the event. With the session a massive success, the students involved received well-deserved recognition for their hard work to ensure that learners’ voices had been heard.

It seems clear that the “Our Future: Our Fight” campaign was instrumental in the reversal of the cuts to student support funding by the Scottish Government.

Alan Sherry, Principal of John Wheatley College, said, “It’s right and proper that our Students’ Association receive this recognition as Runners Up. This is truly impressive as they were up against three of the major universities in the Campaign category - Strathclyde, Abertay and Edinburgh. The whole College is very proud of them and all their work.”

Student President, Arlene King, said, “To be Runners up in two different categories is an achievement in itself, but without the support of the students

and staff at John Wheatley College we wouldn’t have been able to come this far. “The Students’ Association has shown commitment and dedication from the very beginning and we hope to continue this throughout the year.”

Showing off the certificates is Arlene King, President of the John Wheatley College Students’ Association, alongside the Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, Margaret Curran MP,

who congratulated the students on her recent visit to the College. The students were delighted that she could make the time to come along and the College is very grateful to the Shadow Secretary and to the Re-Gen for including them in her busy schedule.

THE issue of childcare has come up recently when talking to parents in my constituency this week, and how expensive it is to meet the care costs when parents are out at work.

A decision that many parents face is whether or not they can afford to work given that a huge amount of their wages would go straight to paying for childcare.

Ensuring that help is given to parents to allow them to work has long been a priority for the me, and that is why I was delighted by the announcement by Glasgow Labour that they will introduce an extra 5 months of child care for 3

year olds in Glasgow should they win the council election in 7 weeks.

This announcement continues the great track record that Labour has in Glasgow and across Scotland from our time in power. It was Labour who introduced “Nurture Classes” in Glasgow, helping our most vulnerable children. Glasgow was also the first council to give 3 and 4 year olds 15 hours a week of nursery.

Contrast this to what has been offered up by the SNP in Edinburgh. Their track record would give a child a nightmare if it was read to them as a bed time story. Alex Salmond has promised to legislate for 600 hours per

year of childcare. This was a promise that he made back in 2007 and failed to make it happen, so it is a wonder why anyone would believe what he is saying now.

What we need is a package for parents that allows them to work, not empty promises from the Edinburgh Government. With Labour delivering on childcare, I hope that future conversations are about how it has become more affordable to work.

If you would like to discuss this, or any other issue with me then please get in contact with me via email on [email protected] or by phoning my office on 0141 564 1364.

This week in Parliament, the Chancellor delivered his Budget.

What we needed was a Budget for jobs and growth and one which focused every penny available on helping hard-pressed families on middle and low incomes.

However, what we got was a Budget that ignored the squeeze on thousands of hard working families that are being hit by rising fuel prices and are seeing their tax credits cut. Instead we got a decision to give a tax break to the rich. When one million young people are out of work and there’s a big deficit to clear, it is completely the wrong priority to cut taxes for people earning over £150,000. It just shows out of touch this Tory-led government is.

In Glasgow East, there are more than 4000 people unemployed, and we need a Government focused on delivering action on youth jobs, not one intent on dropping a tax credits bombshell for working parents, while cutting taxes for the very richest.

For example, in just a few weeks time, couples with children who currently work between 16 and 24 hours a week will have to increase their hours of work to 24 hours a week, or face losing a staggering £3,870 in tax credits due to changes in the tax credit system made by the Tory-led Government.

The Government doesn’t seem to realise that extra hours of work, or alternative jobs are just not available for most people at the moment because unemployment is so high and many employers are having to cut costs. Yet the Government plan to punish families on low incomes who can’t find extra hours of work by taking nearly £4,000 from them. This is an enormous amount for anyone to lose, and will mean families losing their homes, struggling to afford even food and fuel costs.

Nationally, over 200,000 couples with 470,000 children will be affected by these changes to tax credit rules, meaning nearly half a million more

children could end up in poverty in April because of the actions of this Government. Across Scotland 11,370 families will lose out unless they can increase their working hours.

In Glasgow East 205 households with 420 children benefit from Working Tax Credit and work between 16 and 24 hours. This cut is clearly an attack on working families. We need to be encouraging people to stay in work not making life even harder at these difficult times. This will mean that some families will need to make a choice about whether they can continue to work. The Government needs to think again.

Of course there have to be tough decisions on tax, spending and pay. But we won’t get the deficit down unless we have a plan for jobs and growth to get our economy moving again and get people off the dole and back into work.

A year ago the Chancellor said his Budget would ‘put fuel into the tank of the British economy’. But since then our economy has stalled, unemployment has risen month by month and he’s borrowing £158 billion more than he planned. The Tory plan is hurting but it’s just not working.

In these difficult times jobs are hard to come by. And people need help, advice, and support in working through the challenges.

One of the places many people go to seek help is their local Citizens Advice Bureau. So I could hardly believe it when I heard that Labour run Glasgow City Council planned to close all three CABx in the East End – Bridgeton, Easterhouse, and Parkhead. They must be mad to suggest this! Fortunately the public outcry and pressure from other political parties has made Labour back down and the CABx are to remain open. Maybe Labour realised this was not a good move with the Council election coming up on 3rd May!

On jobs themselves, it has been suggested we should have built the

new Forth crossing using Scottish steel. Pity that Westminster allowed virtually the whole Scottish steel industry to be destroyed! And even if we could make the steel here, what would happen if we erected trade barriers to stop steel imports? Other countries would stop buying Scottish goods. So exporting companies in the East End like Dewars and Andrew Muirhead would not be able to sell their products and jobs would be lost – not a good idea.

Defence jobs have also been in the news. The MOD spends most of its money in the south-east of England so effectively we in Scotland are subsidising London and the surrounding area. Scotland gets far less than it pays for in defence spending. The UK Ministry of

Defence has confirmed in a series of Parliamentary Answers that there is a significant and widening structural defence underspend in Scotland. This is the gap between Scotland’s population share of spending and the amount actually spent in Scotland. The underspend in Scotland increased from £749m in 2002-03 to £1.259bn in 2007-2008, which represents a 68% increase in 6 years. Between 2002-2008 the underspend in Scotland has totalled a mammoth £5.622 billion! The figures are clear to see – Scotland gets a raw deal from the Union on defence.

Then we heard recently that the MOD is getting ships built in South Korea. One of the advantages of an independent Scotland would be to stop this nonsense. Scottish defence spending would be focussed in Scotland and would boost the number of jobs here, both in the armed forces and in the supporting industries.

Friday 23rd March 2012 17ATHLETES’ VILLAGE JOBS BOOST TO GLASGOW’S YOUNG UNEMPLOYED

City Legacy, the property consortium building the Athletes’ Village for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, is helping to create a lasting legacy for the people of Glasgow.

It has just announced that it has exceeded its annual target of 22 new jobs and will shortly start the recruitment process for an additional 27 new jobs.Despite a difficult economic climate, the City Legacy Consortium has surpassed their annual target, for the year to March 2012, of 22 new jobs by employing 25 new people, 14 of which are apprentices. In addition, City Legacy is supporting 14 work experience opportunities and has given a commitment

to John Wheatley College for a further 20 work placements, as part of their National Progression Award in Building Crafts.

City Legacy is also about to begin the process of recruiting more local people to meet this year’s target of 27 new jobs. Vacancies will include joiners, electricians, painters, plumbers, bricklayers and a host of other construction related jobs.During the development, City Legacy will employ a total of 620 people to develop 700 riverside homes and other accommodation for the Athletes’ Village, which will be available for sale and rent after the Games.

93 of these will be new jobs and 60 of these will be apprenticeships. The partnering

agreements with sub-contractors will create 36 new jobs, 24 of which will be apprentices. Four of the Apprentices from the area met the Re-Gen on site, these were, Connor Degnan 17 years old who lives in Bridgeton, Glasgow. He attended St Mungo’s Academy and John Wheatley college and started his plumbing apprenticeship with CCG in August 2011. To date he has worked on various different projects and will continue to do so throughout his apprenticeship learning all aspects of his chosen trade. He attends North Glasgow College and is working towards an SVQ Plumbing Level 3.

Brian Campbell 17 years old and lives in Dennistoun, Glasgow. Before working for

Mactaggart and Mickel, Brian attended school and during in his last year, he completed a course in bricklaying and roughcasting at John Wheatley College. He enjoyed the course so much that he applied for roughcasting apprenticeship. Brian is now employed as an apprentice roughcaster working with an experienced two man squad. Scott Wyllie 18 years old and lives in Calton, Glasgow. He attended St Mungo’s Academy before taking a Digital Media course at City of Glasgow College. Scott came to WH Malcolm through the Glasgow East Regeneration Agency where he indicated he had a change of heart and decided he would like to venture into the construction industry. Scott started working for WH Malcolm’s on 31st October 2011 as a site engineering assistant. He has worked with the site engineers gaining experience of site works as well as learning the skills of a site engineer. W H Malcolm plans to put Scott through a college course to further develop his academic skills which will hopefully allow him to fully become a qualified site engineer.

Ed Monaghan, spokesperson for the City Legacy Consortium said:“Taking on more employees and apprentices than our target is a real boost, both for the construction sector and for young people starting out in the world of work. “All our businesses have their roots in Glasgow so it’s fitting to create employment

opportunities for local people who will in turn be helping to regenerate this area in the years to come.”

A number of the apprenticeships were recruited through Glasgow City Council’s Commonwealth Apprenticeship Initiative. Under the scheme, the Council provides up to £8,000 towards the costs of every apprenticeship place for SMEs that can demonstrate their commitment to creating new or additional apprenticeship opportunities. The initiative applies to pupils who go to school in Glasgow or live in Glasgow, as part of the Council’s commitment to ensuring that after the 2014 Commonwealth Games are over, a legacy remains in the city.

City Legacy are obliged to reach agreed targets for training and recruitment of workers and apprentices for the Athletes Games Village development and if City Legacy exceed these targets City Legacy will be entitled to apply for the above grant for the additional new entrants.Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council said:“The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is already delivering a real legacy for the people of the city, and the Athletes’ Village is yet another example of this. When bidding for Games-related contracts, businesses have to show how they can benefit the local community by providing employment and training. It is very pleasing to see that so many young people have been given the chance to work on this fantastic project for Glasgow, and that City Legacy will give more such opportunities in the coming years.” The City Legacy Consortium is working closely with Glasgow City Council to ensure all Glasgow residents have the opportunity to apply for a training place or job referral. The Athletes’ Village is being built by City Legacy consortium which comprises developers and contractors CCG, Cruden, Mactaggart & Mickel and WH Malcolm

No More Turns on “The Serpents Twist” –Thanks to Bellway Homes

Glasgow East MP Margaret Curran last Friday, officially opened the recently upgraded £2m Boghall Road at Calderpark, completed by award-winning housebuilder Bellway Homes and providing a new access route to the company’s Calderpark development.

The Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, Ms.

Curran MP performed the ceremony by cutting a ribbon to open the road, running from the foot of the “Hangman’s Brae” through to the Old Mount Vernon Dog track, that leads to Bellway’s The Avenues development, which is situated close to the former site of Glasgow zoo. Margaret Curran MP told the Re-Gen: “The positive impact, the construction of

new homes and also investment in improving existing infrastructures can bring to an area is considerable. I congratulate Bellway Homes for the substantial upgrade to Boghall Road, (known locally as “The Serpents Twist”), which provides even greater access to and from this part of the city for the local community.”

As one of the UK’s top four house builders, Bellway Homes is committed to regeneration projects, with currently more than 80% of the company’s housing developments being built on Brownfield sites. Bellway’s efforts also extend to transforming areas into highly accessible locations and flourishing new neighbourhoods by putting in place, where possible, new infrastructures such as road upgrades, children’s play areas or creating walk ways and cycle paths.

Andy Wyles, Managing Director at Bellway Homes said, “The upgrade of Boghall Road follows on from the recent completion of a new road at our development

in Airdrie only last month. At Bellway Homes, we view every project on an individual basis because we don’t see our job as just building quality housing. We consider all the elements that make a location a desirable place to live from good road and transport links to the proximity of social amenities and schooling. “I want to thank Margaret Curran MP for taking the time to open the road. This represents another important phase not just for Bellway Homes at The Avenues, but the further improvements and investment taking place in this part of the city overall, such as the M74 link road, which now makes Calderpark and neighbouring Uddingston and Baillieston highly accessible for travel to Glasgow and beyond.” Featuring a selection of three, four and five-bedroom detached homes, with a starting price of £187,500, The Avenues remains a popular development, particularly among prospective family buyers in search of a home where they want to settle for the long-term.

Ian Allison, Andy Morrison, Margaret Curran MP and Fraser Conn (Sales and Marketing Director Bellway Homes) brave the elements to officially open the new £2 million road improvement at Broomhouse.

Last week saw many organisations from the area converge in the People’s Palace at Glasgow Green for the annual Grow Green Awards organised by Playbusters.

Councillor Frank Docherty was the guest speaker and he praised the work being done in the area to reduce the Carbon Footprint and the involvement of the schools and various projects who have programmes ongoing.

When it came to the actual awards the overall

winner on the night was The Glasgow Bike Station who after getting the top prize announced that they were moving out of the East End and setting up in Finnieston.

Other winners included Eastbank Primary School, North Glasgow Housing Association, NGCFI and Simply Swap Volunteer Team. Music was provided by the choirs from the Gorbals Community and Lodging House Mission and this was very well received by everyone who attended on the night.

Violent Offender behind barsEasterhouse Group 1 community Policing Team Constables David Caldwell and Stephen Walker had been on the trail of a violent Organised Crime Group Member member who has breached bail curfew conditions imposed by the court for a previous offence.

He has been the subject of extensive joint working by local police and Procurator Fiscal Service to target his criminality. This male

had been actively evading arrest for a number of weeks but just after midnight at the weekend, the officers were on cycle patrol in Easterhouse when they spoke with 3 occupants of a vehicle. The offender was trying to hide in the rear of the vehicle and on being recognised tried to escape putting up a very violent struggle. The officers were quickly assisted by other Community Policing Team

officers and the offender was brought under control and detained in custody. This was an excellent piece of pro-activity and resulted in an excellent arrest and sends out a positive message to the community and a sharp reminder to any criminals. The subject appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court where he pled guilty to the offence and has been remanded in HMP Barlinnie for sentencing.

Cordia names Ruchazie man Employee of the YearRUCHAZIE man Kenneth Sharp was named Employee of the Year at the recent Cordia Staff Recognition and Excellence Awards.

Kenneth, who works in Cordia’s centre in Baillieston, was picked from workforce in the care support division to receive the award.

Cordia’s service recycles and delivers a range of equipment supplied by health and social work services to people requiring assistance with living at home.

The evening ceremony, hosted by comedian Des Clarke, was held earlier this month in the stunning surroundings of the Old Fruitmarket and featured more than 300 Cordia staff and nominees.

A record 1420 nominations from colleagues, clients and the public were received this year, each highlighting the hard

work and dedication of Cordia employees across Glasgow.

Speaking after the awards, Cordia Managing Director David Melvin, said: “It is no exaggeration to say that Cordia’s 7300-strong dedicated and hard-working staff not only provide an exceptionally high standard of service to the people of Glasgow, they are, in many cases, the backbone of this city.

“It was very rewarding to attend the event and to play my part in paying tribute to people like Kenneth, who are a credit to Cordia.”

Excellent observationsShettleston Response, Group 3 Constables Chris Straub and Joanne Kane were on mobile patrol on Westmuir Street, when they were approached by a member of the public who advised them of a male acting suspiciously near to parked motor vehicles carrying a black rucksack.

Due to a number of similar incidents within the vicinity

PC Straub and Kane attended immediately and observed the male whom they identified as a prolific offender, he immediately made off discarding the rucksack and gloves. A foot chase ensued where the offender entered a block of flats and a private dwelling house; he was pursued and detained making admissions to a number of crimes of dishonesty.

Examination of the backpack was found to contain items of stolen property which were returned to the rightful owner. This is a great example of how the increased number of Community Policing Officers, assisted by members of the public can keep people safe

The accused appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court where he pled guilty to the charge of

Weapon carrier CaughtShettleston Response, Group 1, Constables Andrew Thomson and Derek Gibson observed a group of youths on Westmuir Street noting one of them to be holding a metallic object against the inside of his arm.

The police witnesses immediately approached the offender who made off. He

was observed placing the metallic object under a parked motor vehicle and continued

running. This item was recovered and found to be a sizable machete. The offender was traced and apprehended after attempting to change his tracksuit top in order to change his outward appearance.

Sentences for offensive weapons and knives

have never been tougher. These weapons, that are normally carried for bravado, can ultimately cause fatalities to innocent young lives. This male will almost certainly spend time at HMP Barlinnie as a result of this. WHAT a start to the popular Top 10 Competition for N.E. Carpet Bowls League clubs, writes JACK HIGH. The three opening quarter-finals - Shettleston had a bye - produced some thrilling action. None more so than the Sandyhills v Mount Vernon fixture. The clubs were tied at 4 points apiece, but Mount Vernon won through by virtue of a superior shots difference (46-36). RESULTS: Quarter-Finals - Whitevale 6, North British 2; Sandyhills 4, Mount Vernon 4 (Mount Vernon won on shots difference); Springboig 2, Garrowhill 6. Semi-Finals - Mount Vernon 6, Garrowhill 2; Whitevale 4, Shettleston 4 (Whitevale won on shots difference 43-26). That means a repeat of last year’s final involving Mount Vernon and Whitevale. The League Presentation Evening will take place at Mount Vernon Bowling Club, on Thursday, April 5, at 7.30pm. Should be a great night - usually is for the member clubs and guests - and Secretary Ian Colligan is expecting in excess of 100 people will attend to see the silverware winners. I hear CARMYLE Bowling Club have suffered green damage carried out by mindless vandals. Meanwhile, our Bowling section has drawn praise from long-serving GARROWHILL member Alex Morrison, who said: “Thanks for the latest edition with excellent coverage. “Plenty of bowlers have seen it and commented favourably.” Thanks to good people like Alex and Ian Colligan, we try to give East End clubs as much publicity as possible. Both gentlemen have their finger on the pulse when it comes to compiling excellent snippets of news. SHETTLESTON Mens’ Opening Day is Saturday, April 14. The Ladies’ Section opens on Friday, April 20. Shettleston have arranged friendlies against North British (home), on April 21, and away to Milton of Campsie a week later.
