OLD BOYS RETURN TO THE SCHOOLSACS Old Boys visited their alma mater on Friday as the year groups from 1965, 1975 and 1985 attended the assembly and then were given guided tours around the school. It is always special to have Old Boys return to the school.

WESTERFORD HIGH SCHOOL CLASSICAL POPSThe City Hall erupted with applause on the 19th and 20th of August as another spectacular Classical Pops was held. “Classical Pops” is Westerford High School’s bi-annual music concert and this year the concert boasted tons of new music, talent and stunning performances by both junior and senior musicians as well as the school choir. Wednesday 19 August was opening night and our musicians, music staff and backstage crew were ready for action after having spent the entire day rehearsing and lugging their instruments on and off the buses. Seven o’clock finally came, the doors opened and the hall was buzzing with excitement as pupils, parents and special dignitaries filed in and waited in anticipation for the concert to begin. After a welcome and introduction by Mr Patrick Jordi and Ms. Alison Gray, the audience was invited to stand and sing the school song after which the show commenced. The first performance, played by the string orchestra, was a wonderful rendition of a Vivaldi piece that featured a violin solo by Joshua Wells (Grade 11). The next performance was a

short and sweet guitar ensemble followed by a modern twist as the orchestra played a mix of Michael Jackson favourites. Robyn Quenet-Meintjes (Grade 12), backed by the orchestra, then played a fantastic solo on the alto saxophone in a piece arranged by Mr Charles Daniell called Pequena Czárdás. The audience was then blown away by the concert band’s next three pieces which were the well-known: Downtown Abbey, Granada and The Hunger Games. The audience was then invited to stand once again to join in with the choir and concert band to sing the infamous Les Miserables song ‘I Dreamed a Dream’.The second half of the performance was underway after a quick interval and started with a bang as the staff sang the song Wild World. As imagined, this got pupils very excited and applauding loudly for their teachers. The orchestra then played another Czárdás with a solo violin performance by the young but extremely talented, Naomi Fokkens (Grade 8). The next performance brought an even greater vibe as Larissa Titus (12), backed

by the big band, sang Cry Me a River and this was followed by a stream of modern songs including Angel Eyes and Forget You with a solo on the tenor saxophone by Seth Alexander (11) as well as performances by the popular Rock Band that got the audience on their feet and clapping to the funky tunes. Representing the true variety of the musical showcase, the final performance consisted of the choir, orchestra and vocal soloists Megan Thebus and Robyn Quenet-Meintjies performing a mix of popular hits by famous artists such as LMFAO, Avicci, Swedish House Mafia and David Guetta. Both nights were equally successful as Westerford High School’s musicians showed off their great talent. It was also a send off for The Matrics who enjoyed their last Classical Pops as Westerfordians and clearly expressed this by giving the performers a standing ovation. All pupils and staff involved in the organising of this year’s Classical Pops can truly be proud of their excellent work as the audience was left with nothing but praise. Kirthi Chetty

GALA MUSIC CONCERTOn Friday 28 August 2015 Pinelands High School held their annual Gala Music Concert at the Baxter Theatre. It was a wonderful evening of music with performances of a very high standard. The concert showcased the school’s premier soloists, vocal groups, instrumental ensembles, bands and the orchestra.

GRADE 7 iSERVE PROJECTAs an ASHOKA CHANGEMAKER SCHOOL - service is at the heart of what we do at Sun Valley. The Grade 7 iServe Project involved collecting second hand clothing for ASHOKA Fellow, Hillary Lanes’ Clothes 2 Cash Exchange. The school collected a massive 594 bags of clothes that generated an income of R9 345.00. The Grade 7 Student Leadership Team them

decided to “Pay it Forward” to the Desmond Tutu Foundation in Masiphumelela who work with the youth in the area. Their dream of owning a powerful sound system to boost their events came true when the Grade 7’s presented them with the gift. Communities that work together -thrive.This was a fine example of true of change making in action.

TEENS, SEX, BABIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESWith 20 000 students falling pregnant at schools in South Africa in 2014 and 223 of them at Primary School - a curriculum that doesn’t include this topic is useless. A Grade 7 Performance Task involves making a “Baby” out of wheat flour, stockings and some stuffing. For two weeks, the students learn what it means to be a teenage parent - waking up in the middle of the night for feeds, keeping the baby with them at all times, ensuring the baby has the correct diet, holding the baby correctly, drawing up a monthly budget, ensuring the baby has the correct clothing and above all, dealing with their randomly selected partner. Not only is the experience an eye opener, it generated a conversation about making informed choices and taking responsibility for actions.

SEARED OSTRICH FILLET WITH BLACKCURRANT SAUCE - Serves 4Ostrich is low in fat, healthy and tasty – just don’t overcook it. INGREDIENTS:• Splash of olive oil• 4 ostrich fillet steaks• Salt and freshly ground black pepper• 1 cloves garlic, crushed• 1 tsp finely chopped fresh ginger,• 1 red chilli, sliced (optional)• ½ cup dry red wine• 2 Tbsp. blackcurrant jam• 4 tbls Wellington’s Steakhouse Sauce• 4 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped METHOD:Season steaks with salt and pepper.

Heat the olive oil to high heat in heavy-based frying pan.Sear ostrich fillets in batches for 1 minute per side, and set aside.To the same pan add a drop more olive oil and gently fry ginger, garlic and chillies, stirring for 1 minute. Add the wine, blackcurrant jam and Wellingtons. Steakhouse Sauce, and simmer until slightly reduced.Return the fillets and spring onions to the sauce. Gently heat through – don’t overcook.Serve on a pile crushed potatoes with steamed greens.

HIGH TEA

COLLECT-A-CAN

A High Tea was held on Monday the 21st September to honour Sally Boulle, Ursula Rontsch and Jill Theron who have all taught at The Grove Primary for many years.

They will retire in December. Many past pupils, staff and friends came with stories, thoughts and memories of the three ladies. A lovely afternoon was had by all.

The Grove Primary will enter the national schools’ competition run by Collect-a-Can for the first time this year. Recycling metals is part of the Grade 7 curriculum and this castle inspired by the Enchanted Wood readathon theme, comprises 450 cans. Cans were brought to school by our pupils and the castle was built by Mrs Alford with the help of six Grade 7 A pupils.

WP TENNIS TOURNAMENT The WP tennis Tournament was played in Rondebosch on 4-6 September 2015. Mikaeel Woodman and Yazeed Abbas came 2nd and 9th in their respective singles matches and achieved 1st place for doubles.

Leo Matthysen achieved 1st place for singles and doubles.

GRADE R TECHNOLOGY WEEKOur Grade R girls spend the morning with 11 of our parents. We feel it is our

responsibility to educate children from a young age. The girls learned about different educational software that can be used on an iPad, iPhone and other devices.

ESKOM EXPO FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS

Congratulations to Maryam Badsha who received a Silver Medal for her entry, ESKOM Expo for Young Scientists. Her project was on “Does Social Media Encourage FOMO(Fear Of Missing Out?)”

The Oakhurst families donated chess sets to the Ummangaliso Public Primary in Khayelitsha (Site B). A coaching board was purchased from money donated by girls at Oakhurst. The children at Ummangaliso Public Primary now have the opportunity to learn to play chess properly. They are being coached by UCT chess club.

2015 RUGBY WORLD CUP BERGVLIET PRIMARY SCHOOL PRODUCTION 2015

In the run-up to the 2015 Rugby World Cup Series in England, the BPS Estate Manager entered into the spirit of things with his depiction of a typical South African rugby fan preparing for a Bok victory.

Bergvliet Primary School Production 2015 was held over a period of three days from Thursday 3 September to Saturday 5 September. A great deal of hard work, good fun and loads of enthusiasm went into this show which was called “Peeps into Wonderland”, and was well received by audiences made up of family and friends of BPS. The Grade Seven learners presented “Beauty is the Beast”, a short play with a

moral to the story and a most satisfying ending. Pictured are the full cast of girls and boys. All the other grades worked on different productions, depicting their choices of favourite childrens’ stories. Music, creativity and team work with a generous helping of talent ensured a resounding success. The Reception Grade learners charmed everyone with their endearing portrayal of The Three Little Pigs.
