Twin Rivers – a private school from Zimbabwe, visited Sun Valley Primary School to compete in both an U13A Girls Hockey match as well as an U13A Soccer match.

Despite a determined, second half charge by Sun Valley, the hockey girls lost 0-1 to a strong touring team

The SVPS U13A Soccer boys produced a great performance to start their season.

The boys secured a 15-1 victory over Twin Rivers. Junior Lena stood out with his calmness under pressure, incredible ball control and passing.

Cold and wet weather never deterred the enthusiasm of our students and their teachers at their annual Grade 6 Leadership Outdoor Learning Experience. This three day programme in the mountain near Grabouw is designed to deal with key issues young adolescence face during this season of their lives. This year the Camp was facilitated by Lead4Life who

added great value to the learning e x p e r i e n c e . Real learning happens away from school and often - away from home.

Grade 4’s invited the local police department to Sun Valley Primary School to have their cars washed while enjoying tea and cake, as part of their Community Service Project for the year.

The police officers were pleasantly greeted with an assortment of cakes and coffee, and beaming Grade 4 learners, smiling from ear to ear, enjoyed the opportunity to show their gratitude by washing a police vehicle.

After the activities, the Grades 4’s participated in a discussion by one of the detectives on, “A day in the life of a police officer in our community.

The Gr 4’s thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to interact with these police officers, and were able to learn a lot from the experience.

The police officers left feeling valued and appreciated and ready to serve our community.

FREEDOM SWIMThe Freedom Swim took place on Saturday 11 April. The swim is over 7.5km from Robben Island to BigBay. Nic Mortley (gr11) finished 2nd in the wetsuit category and 10th overall according to the provisionalresults.His fundrai-sing for the NSRI waterwise programme (a pro-gramme that teaches young children how to swim) has brought in R18 000 in donations so far. Congratulations Nic!

The Alexo Bosch RPL finished off the cricket season in fine style!The event, in its second year, once again proved to be a success on so many levels. It was great to see an event which really pulls all areas of the cricket fraternity together and showcases some exceptional talent at the same time. The interaction between the different teams and age groups cannot have a price put upon it. The competition on the field

was indeed keen and there were a number of extremely close matches that kept the spectators on the edges of their seats. Superb batting in the final saw the team led by Jesse Christensen take the honours as team winners.

Adults usually view the lives of kids as stress-free since children have no jobs to go to, meetings to attend, or bills to pay. However, psychologists know that kids, just like adults, can experience varying degrees of stress which, if not managed, can lead to serious mental and physical health problems.

While some stress can be positive in that it provides the energy needed to tackle a big test or sports event, too much stress can create unnecessary hardship and challenges.

When stress becomes drawn-out and unmanageable, adult intervention is needed to help the child cope.

So, when does stress become unhealthy?A response to stress becomes unhealthy when it interferes

with everyday, normal functioning. Some of the common ways in which stress can manifest in children may include the following:• Acting irritable or moody• Withdrawing from activities that used to give them pleasure• Routinely expressing worries• Complaining more than usual about school• Crying

How to reduce stress and anxiety• Stay calm – Children look to their parents to determine how to react in situations.

• Encourage bravery – If a child faces his fears, the anxiety reduces naturally on its own over time.• Reward bravery – A hug or kiss will do, and will encourage more acts of bravery.• Promote positivity – Affected children often get lost in negative thoughts and self-criticism.• Create relaxation time – Children need time to be kids.• Listen and understand – If your child says his worried or scared, believe them.

The link between stress and depressionThe long-term negative consequences of stress on health can

be insidious and may include a weakened immune system and higher risk of depression.

Sustained or chronic stress, in particular, leads to elevated hormones such as cortisol, the “stress hormone”, and reduced serotonin and other neurotransmitters in the brain, including dopamine, a lack of which has been linked to depression.

Identifying and tackling depressionWith depression in childhood, we often only think to look out for

low mood and sadness, but one of the key features in childhood depression is irritability. You can also look out for a symptom known as anhedonia – a lack of or decrease in taking pleasure in tasks and activities that your child usually enjoys.

As a parent or caregiver, you know your child best and will sense when something is wrong. Explore whether the symptoms you are seeing at home are evident in other settings, get as much collateral information as possible, and act.

Take your child to the doctor for a full examination in order to rule out any possible medical conditions (such as anaemia, low blood pressure, blood sugar dysregulation, and thyroid problems).

Once this is done, and if there is nothing medical that can account for your child’s symptoms, consult with a psychologist. Psychologists can assess whether the symptoms are in fact primarily related to a depression, or if there is another concern at play.

A team effort at the recent alexo rondebsoch premier league eventThe English-medium school Groote Schuur High School, was founded in 1959 in the leafy suburb of Newlands. Originally a co-educational Afrikaans High School, it was established in the Vredenhof residence, presently the Frank Joubert Art and Design Centre. There were initially 37 learners but over the years pupil numbers have steadily increased, and after the addition of six extra classrooms in 2011, the learner numbers have grown to 830 in 2015. The present school building in Palmyra Road, Newlands was inaugurated in June 1964. In 1978 Nassau High School amalgamated with Groote Schuur. Today the Groote Schuur High School crest incorporates the lion of Nassau and the gable of Groote Schuur. The history of the school shows a spirit of enterprise, realism and adaptability. 1n 1991 it became the first public Afrikaans high school in South Africa with a broad admissions policy. Dual medium instruction was phased in from 1994. During this year, a boarding establishment was also built for boys and girls, now named Monorgan House.Since 2011 all tuition at Groote Schuur High School is in English only.

INCOMING PRINCIPAL OF PINELANDS HIGH SCHOOLMr Dave Campbell succeeds Mr Jeremy Gibbon as Principal from May 2015. Mr Campbell qualified with a B.A. in English from UPE and an HDE from UCT before moving on to teach at The Settlers High School and then on to Camps Bay High School as a Head of Department. In 1997, Mr Campbell started Cedar House School in Kenilworth, and was Principal for seven years. He then moved on to the role of Headmaster at Somerset College which he fulfilled for seven years. Most recently, Mr Campbell was Senior Housemaster and Deputy Principal at St John’s College in Johannesburg.

NEW HOCKEY ASTROTURFThe installation of the full-sized hockey astroturf began on 1 April 2015. This is the realisation of a dream that was first proposed over twenty years ago and will enable students to train and play on a world-class hockey astro and to remain competitive at the highest level of school hockey.

INGREDIENTS:• 20ml peanut or vegetable oil• 6 deboned skinless chicken thighs cut

into bite-sized pieces.• 3 Tbls corn flour• ½ tsp ground white pepper• ½ tsp salt• 1 tsp ground cumin• 6 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped• 300g Oyster or Shimeji mushrooms• 3cm fresh ginger, cut into very thin

matchsticks• 3 cloves crushed garlic• 1 red chili, thinly sliced• 2 tbls soy sauce• ½ cup Wellington’s tomato sauce• 1 Tbls runny honey• Freshly chopped coriander• 150ml Veg or chicken stock METHOD:Place the chicken into a glass bowl with the corn flour, white pepper, salt and cumin – mix together to coat.

Heat the oil in a large wok or frying pan and stir fry the chicken in two batches for 3 minutes. Now return the chicken to the wok and add the mushrooms and spring onions, ginger, garlic and chili. Cook for 1 minute, stirring; add the soy sauce and tomato sauce, stir well to combine. Add honey and stock and cook the chicken till done, about another 10 minutes, stir in the coriander and serve with steamed rice or veggie noodles.

The Grove Grade 7’s have recently returned from an exciting tour to Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn. Their days were packed with activities including interesting museum visits; an adventure tour of the Cango Caves; camel and ostrich rides; and wildlife encounters. It was a bonding experience for the group and one that brought many aspects of the curriculum to life in fascinating ways.

On the 6th of March, Westerford High School’s Interact took a group of eager and devoted Westerfordians to visit Maitland Cottage. Maitland Cottage is an orthopaedic hospital for children from all over South Africa. It is a place where patients can recuperate in a safe and comfortable environment. The volunteers helped out by

reading books, playing cards with or just chatting with the children. It was a throroughly enjoyable afternoon and the huge smiles of the children showed their appreciation. “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”

INTERACT: MAITLAND COTTAGE VISIT

From Friday 28th March to Tuesday 31st March, Westerford High School held its annual school production. This year it took the form of a musical that followed the life of The Beatles. The musical (written by Mr. Duncan Buwalda, a teacher at the school) kept audiences on the edge of their seats and featured many of The Beatles classic songs. The directors, Mr. Duncan Buwalda and Mr. Adrian Voerman along with musical director, Mr. Charles Daniell and choreographer, Ms Gillian Bedwell were responsible in bringing the play to life.With over 100 pupils involved, which included the cast, the band and student-run sound, lighting and media teams, the musical was a huge success. Grade 6 and 7 Oakhurst Girls enjoying the exciting activities offered at High Africa Camp. A group of Oakhurst ballet students performed a piece called “Inspired by Degas’ at the showcase of dance

held at the Artscape.

Oakhurst families generously donated 4500 Easter eggs that were packed and given to the Rondebosch and Claremont policemen, children’s homes and retirement hoes in the community to spread some love and kindness at Easter time.

Recent highlights of the First Term include our annual Fun Run which took place in March. Learners and their families ran, jogged, walked and strolled through our neighbourhood, and this energising activity was followed by food and fun on the school field where classes had set up games and parents cooked delicious food for all to enjoy.

Very good news was received from the Western Cape Education Department when the results of the 2014 Systemic Tests arrived. Our results put us amongst the top achieving primary schools in the city. The Grade Three results were Mathematics 98% and Language 92%, while the Grade Six results were Mathematics 100% and Language 98%.

The school was awarded certificates for Overall Excellence in Language and Mathematics for Grades Three and Six at the WCED Provincial Awards Ceremony, and for Top Performance in both Grade Three and Grade Six Mathematics and Home Language at the Metro South Education District Circuit Two Litnum Awards Ceremony.

The Rutgers School of Business in America awarded Mr Arendse, Headmaster of Groote Schuur PS, with the International Leadership Excellence Award.“In bestowing this award, we express our appreciation and recognize your passionate leadership of Kalksteenfontein Primary School and your dedication in developing and sustaining the relationship with Julie Ruth, Cal Maradonna and Rutgers University, now in its eleventh year.

Mr Arendse was the headmaster at Kalksteenfontein before he moved to Groote Schuur PS in January 2015.

Community Interaction for 2015 started off with a bang. First term we ran three drives, namely, Bread tags for wheelchairs, A Easter Egg drive and U-Turn. The U-Turn bin was filled after one day. Bread Tags for wheelchairs brought in over 62 000

bread tags. During the Easter egg drive the Blue school managed to collect over 4000 eggs. The amount of eggs brought in was incredible. Children were found taking Easter eggs from their lunch boxes to give to the Community Interaction team.

Following up on our Ashoka accreditation as a Changemaker school, Ashoka made funding available for Maggie Lemere, an oral historian and story teller, along with Nathan Golon, the director of Photography with Goodfight Media, who are both based in Washington DC, to make a movie about our school. Pinelands North was chosen to represent all Changemaker schools in Africa, to show what is possible with limited resources and a brave commitment to educating the whole child.In November 2014 for one week, they observed everything that the children and staff do that makes our school the empathetic, creative, problem solving, socially aware school it is! The story line focussed on David White, the first pupil with special needs who was enrolled at Pinelands North in 1998, who set the tone for the Inclusive school we are today. The movie, telling the Pinelands North story, was released last week and is available on YouTube, Everyone a Changemaker: The Story of Pinelands North at youtu.be/m92tLcVU6u8. This movie got more than 3000 views in just four days! This is a hope filled story about a well functioning school in South Africa, so watch it and become inspired

to change ‘your’ school from within. 11 March 2015, the grade 3 boys and girls were invited to escort Ajax CT onto the field. This was an amazing opportunity afforded to our learners.

Overall First Time at the blue school was a blast with many sports events, Outings and Performances. What a great way to start the year.
