FOOD

Sesame-seared tuna with a sweet and sour twistServes 4

The tuna needs to be fresh and deep red – and I mean really fresh.

INGREDIENTS:• A little oil for searing• 1 tbls, fresh ginger, grated• 2 cloves garlic, crushed• 2 spring onions with tops very finely chopped• 1 tsp sesame oil• 1 tbls soy sauce• ¾ cup Wellingtons Sweet and Sour Sauce • 4 thick slices of raw tuna• 2 tsp sesame seeds, toasted METHOD:• Mix all the ingredients together,

except the tuna and sesame seeds.

• Lay the tuna in the marinade for 15 minutes, turning once.

• Remove the tuna from the marinade and set aside.

• Oil a grill pan lightly and sear the tuna on both sides – don’t take it beyond medium, it is better served rare.

• Heat the leftover marinade in a small saucepan and drizzle over tuna. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with sticky rice and stir-fried vegetables.

MATHS WITH A DIFFERENCE AT SILVERMINE ACADEMYThe Grade 8s wrapped up the term by making the most amazing lampshades in their Maths class. Accurate measuring, precision cutting and dexterity in construction were the order of the day as they put the pieces together and produced attractive, practical lampshades. Did they realise that this activity formed part of the syllabus focussing on angles and congruency? Probably not! Math anxiety is a chronic disorder characterized by excessive, long-lasting anxiety and worry about math situations such as tests and general math performance. Math phobia is an irrational fear and avoidance of maths. At Silvermine we try help students to appreciate Mathematics. The Grade 8 and 9 teacher, Marlene Geldenhuys, combines her inherent creativity and Maths ability to help students discover a love for numbers.

ROBOTICS - THE LANGUAGE OF TECHNOLOGYSun Valley Primary School understands the importance of preparing students for the future workplace. Understanding that students need to be prepared for a technological world that incorporates so many of their basic day to day activities.

We’ve been excited as a school to introduce Robotics as a starting point for preparing students for such a world. Our Grade 6 students this year have had

the fantastic opportunity to have robotics integrated into their curriculum. As they learn the basics of computer programming through a GUI(Graphic User Interface) based application allowing them to understand programming fundamentals

in a visual way. Using the Scribbler robot, as a tool for these basics, there has been incredible excitement and interest. Students are engaged and eagerly participate in these lessons as they learn these skills and concepts.

Sun Valley Primary School is excited to be apply such innovative and relevant content into our school

curriculum. We look to expand these lessons into our Grade 7 curriculum for 2016 as part of our continual desire to stay relevant in the world we live in.

FIRST XI CRICKET: FIRST RANKINGS FOR THE 2015/16 SEASON

WITH SUMMER IN FULL SWING THERE IS NO BETTER TIME TO EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN...

BANANA SUGAR BODY SCRUBWhen the bananas are starting to brown, grab those beauties and put them to use. This one skips the oil and relies purely on the benefit of banana and the gently abrasive sugar.• 1 ripe banana• 3 tablespoons granulated sugar• ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil (optional)

Smash ingredients together with a fork into a chunky goop. Don’t over-mash or it will become too thin. If you want a banana scrub for your face, reserve some of the banana and mash it separately without sugar. In the shower, pat the sugar mixture and gently massage over your body. For your face, gently massage plain banana there, avoiding the eye

The best way to maintain healthy looking, glowing skin is to use a body scrub. We have created a list of ten body scrubs you can make at home. Not only do you get the benefit of saving money, but they are all natural which means NO chemicals. Don’t forget to apply moisturiser or body butter after using any kind of scrub.

Use your homemade sugar scrub to slough away dead skin and moisturize. Just scoop out a generous amount

in the shower, and massage into your skin where you need it: knees, elbows, bottoms of feet, etc.

area. Rinse off with warm water.

VANILLA COCONUT BROWN SUGAR SCRUBCoconut oil is subtly fragrant and slightly miraculous. This one is a super moisturizer, and can practically double as dessert.• 1/2 cup coconut oil• 1/2 cup brown sugar• 1/2 teaspoon vanillaMix ingredients together. Rub on skin while in the shower, massage, and rinse.

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL

FAMILY HEALTH MONTH!

Our health is important to us so we need to better take

care of ourselves and our family.

We can start with eating healthier and having healthy eating options for our family. This can be done by eating five fruits and vegetables each day whether that be fresh, frozen or canned. It’s also important to give the proper portions of food to to our children and ourselves. Cut down on the fats, get lean meats and poultry, and eat together as a family.

We need to start early with our children, we can do this by involving them in the process, being a good role model for them, and having the right foods and snacks available for them.

We can keep our families healthy with exercise, preventive care, being attuned to our bodies, avoid smoking and smoking around children. 9 FUN WAYS YOU CAN EXERCISE AS A FAMILY:1. Go for a pre or post dinner walks2. Make a game out of chores3. Turn commercial breaking into fitness breaks4. Dance to music5. Walk the dog together6. Have the kids work in the yard with you7. Garden together8. Have a weekly sports night9. Do a charity run or walk

Start today and get your families health on track this month!

BOK DAY FUNDRAISERThe Rugby World Cup has generated great excitement and team support across the globe and at BPS! On Friday, 02 October we had a BOK DAY fundraiser in aid of The Chris Burger / Petro Jackson Fund, which assists rugby players who have sustained serious injuries. Green and Gold was the order of the day.

RATHER SCRUFFY...Four years ago (in 2011) Bergvliet Primary School received a visit from a rather scruffy, stray ginger cat. He decided to stay with us and he has thrived. He is king of all he surveys and is much loved by staff, learners and visitors to our school.

SPORTS’ AND FOOD FESTIVAL 2015The Pinelands Primary School hosted their annual Sports’ and Food Festival on Saturday, 17th October 2015. Also known as “The Blue School”, they were joined by 6 visiting schools namely: Pinehurst, Pinelands North, Turfhall, Thornton, Curro Century City and Ysterplaat.

The day was aimed at having fun and participating in team sports such as soccer, netball and hockey.

With the generous donation from Pinelands KwikSpar, the learners each received a yummy goodie bag which was filled with delicious treats and something to keep them hydrated on this hot day.

The day started off with The Pinelands Primary showing off their talented dancers. They performed an “Opening Ceremony” for the day and after seeing this display, the teams were extremely excited for the day ahead.

The netball, soccer and hockey teams all played plenty of matches and by the end of the day the players were exhausted. The players and coaches played in great spirit and definitely had fun on the day.

A big thank you to Pinelands KwikSpar, to all the staff, coaches and referees involved and lastly a big thank you to the players who participated at The Sports’ and Food Festival.
