KRIEKET RUGBY LANDLOOP

Wow, where has 2015 gone?! Can you believe it’s only 5 weeks until schools close and 8 weeks until Christmas?

It’s been a jam-packed year with sports, academics, concerts, social events, award ceremonies etc …

I’m sure that the one thing on every teacher, student and (especially) parents’ mind is final exams, eeck! But in the very wise words of my favourite little fish, Dory: “Just keep swimming”.

From the AWSUM team we’d like to wish you all good luck with the last stretch, we know that you’ll be doing your absolute best.

We hope you enjoy this issue of

AWSUM, also remember to look out for the winners of our Facebook competition. The winners will be announced on 30 October.

NOVEMBER IN THE GARDENGardening is all about dreaming and seeing pictures in your mind, and then having the patience and energy to turn it into reality. If you dreamt, saw, and did it, the reality will be right in front of your eyes in a glorious November garden.

7 HOT GARDEN TIPS:1. Do not mow your lawn for a week prior and a week after spraying it with herbicides. This might irritate you, but it will give the herbicide the best chance to deal with the abundance of pesky weeds which sprouted during winter.

2. Start mulching your garden, leaving no bare earth uncovered – this will help the garden cope with high temperatures and hot summer winds to come. Watch out for red spider mite on roses, fuchsias and Azaleas.

3. Now that waterblommetjies are starting to go dormant in

ponds, try something grassy around the edge and in the water. Go for tufty Juncus effusus, a perennial grass- or reed-like plant which loves

growing in streambeds and marshes.

4. For colour all summer, plant pelargoniums! These beauties like plenty of light, well drained soil, water when the soil feels dry and good air circulation. Feed them every two weeks with a water soluble fertiliser – they are very tough, but very hungry plants!

5. Spray your apple and pear trees

towards the end of the month for coddling moth. Keep on watering citrus trees regularly and deeply.

6. Cucumbers are quick growers and ready for harvesting in only 2 months. They can be planted in the garden or in pots as they grow upwards and do not take up much space. Ensure that soil is well composted and kept moist.

7. Fine Mediterranean herbs to grow are Rosmarinus ‘Tuscan Blue’ with its lovely sky blue flowers and long stems (which can be used as fragrant skewers for

FAMILY HEALTH! Our health is important to us so we need to better take care of

ourselves and our family.

We can start with eating healthier and having healthy eating options for our family. This can be done by eating five fruits and vegetables each day whether that be fresh, frozen or canned. Instead of having sugary drinks, sodas, and sugary juices switch to low fat diary products and opt out to have healthy snacks instead of junk food. It’s also important to give the proper portions of food to to our children and ourselves. Cut down on the fats, get lean meats and poultry, and eat together as a family. We need to start early with our children, we can do this by involving them in the process, being a good role model for them, and having the right foods and snacks available for them. The best way to do portions for children and us is to use a divided plate. The plate should be divided into four parts

the first top half should be protein and then whole grain pastas, then the rest should be for fruit and veggies. We can keep our families healthy with exercise, preventive care, being attuned to our bodies, avoid smoking and smoking around children. Adults from the age of 18-64 need to exercise 2 and half hours a week with aerobic exercises and 10 minutes at time as a minimum, but it’s best to do 5 hours a week of moderate aerobic exercise. For children 6-17 years of age they need up to 60 minutes a day of physical activity. Children should try to incorporate exercise that help strengthen bones and muscles. Children 2 to 5 years of age don’t really have a recommended amount of time but, it’s safe to say that they should play actively as well.

1 FREE PLAY Sesame-seared tuna with a Sweet and Sour TwistServes 4The tuna needs to be fresh and deep red – and I mean really fresh.

INGREDIENTS:• A little oil for searing• 1 tbls, fresh ginger, grated• 2 cloves garlic, crushed• 2 spring onions with tops very finely chopped• 1 tsp sesame oil• 1 tbls soy sauce• ¾ cup Wellingtons Sweet and Sour Sauce • 4 thick slices of raw tuna• 2 tsp sesame seeds, toasted METHOD:• Mix all the ingredients

together, except the tuna and sesame seeds.

• Lay the tuna in the marinade for 15 minutes, turning once.

• Remove the tuna from the marinade and set aside.

• Oil a grill pan lightly and sear the tuna on both sides – don’t take it beyond medium, it is better served rare.

• Heat the leftover marinade in a small saucepan and drizzle over tuna. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with sticky rice and stir-fried vegetables.

WITH SUMMER IN FULL SWING THERE IS NO BETTER TIME TO EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN...

BANANA SUGAR BODY SCRUBWhen the bananas are starting to brown, grab those beauties and put them to use. This one skips the oil and relies purely on the benefit of banana and the gently abrasive sugar.• 1 ripe banana• 3 tablespoons granulated sugar• ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract or your favorite essential oil (opt)Smash ingredients together with a fork into a chunky goop. Don’t over-mash or it will become too thin. If you want a banana scrub

The best way to maintain healthy looking, glowing skin is to use a body scrub. We have created a list of ten body scrubs you can make at home. Not only do you get the benefit of saving money, but they are all natural which means NO chemicals. Don’t forget to apply moisturiser or body butter after using any kind of scrub.

for your face, reserve some of the banana and mash it separately without sugar. In the shower, pat the sugar mixture and gently massage over your body. For your face, gently massage plain banana there, avoiding the eye area. Rinse off with warm water.

VANILLA COCONUT BROWN SUGAR SCRUBCoconut oil is subtly fragrant and slightly miraculous. This one is a super moisturizer, and can practically double as dessert.• 1/2 cup coconut oil• 1/2 cup brown sugar• 1/2 teaspoon vanillaMix ingredients together. Rub on skin while in the shower, massage, and rinse.

FUN-FILLED SPRINGBOK DAYDuring the fourth term of 2015, De Kuilen Primary school celebrates the value of citizenship. In order to show that the school supports good citizenship, the school decided to support our Springbok Rugby Team on Friday , 16 October 2015. The learners and educators were allowed to wear Springbok ruby shirts or a t-shirt or any green and gold clothing to school. All the learners gathered together in the school hall for a special assembly where we showed our support to or country by singing the National Anthem and having a flag ceremony. The best

dressed learner in each phase was elected and announced at the assembly. We ended the assembly off with a few lucky draws. It was a fun-filled Springbok day that was enjoyed in true South African spirit. A very big thank- you to Mr Heine Gerricke for always availing himself to take these beautiful photos. The learners also appreciated Mrs Le Roux ( a Gr 6 educator) for initiating and organising the great fun-filled morning. Go Bokke!!!!!

WISH UPON A STAR, IT MIGHT JUST COME TRUE….So we all know how fairytales go…a happy ending for all…. Now Labiance’s revue was not far off from that, except it was happy endings with a twist! From Red Riding Hood marrying the wolf, Goldielocks and her gang, Jack Parow and Jack and the beanstalk’s mom to Rapunzel realizing she did eventually need a man, and who other that a fellow rocker, Elvis!Four nights of a full house left teachers, and of course the learners exhausted, but Labbies never missed a beat, and they were never fully dressed without a smile! Jiminy Cricket and

his special stars sprinkled wish glitter dust in this fairytale extravaganza, and the audience was taken on a journey of excitement, humour, love and lots of partying. Once again, Labbies showed just how talented we are, both off, and even on stage!A huge thank you to all the teachers for their help, but expecially to Mrs Combrinck, Mrs Kroese and Ms Jordaan for putting together such a fabulous revue! Remember, no wish is ever too big…you just need to believe!

A TRUE BEAUTY Anthea recently started modelling and participated in her first beauty competition. She was very surprised when they announced her name. She was the second runner up in the competition.
