Mooi so, julle!

Possumus! Ja, ons kan!

Suid-Kaap Sporttoer 2016

Entrepreneurs DayThe Grade 3 learners at Durbanville Preparatory School held their annual Entrepreneurs Day on Friday, 20 May. They used their talents and skills in really creative ways to make, advertise and sell their products.

The learners learned about brainstorming, goal setting, budgeting, advertising and being different and unique while still cooperating and working with others.

Children of all ages can spend hours swinging, climbing, balancing, running and interacting with each other. It has physical, social, self-confidence and mental benefits. We believe that these units will be ideal and will motivate them to be more active.

The children have communicated via email and video-chatted via Skype. Both groups have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can’t wait for their regular Friday “chat” date.

Cheeky broccoli and cheeseSoup: Broccoli and cheese are a heavenly match, and this is a good way to disguise healthy green vegetables if your family aren’t mad about them. Fry half an onion in a little oil until soft. Add two cups of broccoli, a litre of chicken or vegetable stock and a tin of evaporated milk. Boil until the broccoli is soft, then add a cup of grated cheddar cheese. Blend until smooth. Side: Mix softened butter with grated lemon zest, then spread onto toasted low GI brown bread. Serve with the broccoli soup and enjoy.

Smoky bacon and beanSoup: The best thing about this soup is that you can make it with items from your kitchen cupboard or freezer. Simply fry a few rashers of chopped bacon until crispy. Add a tin of Italian tomato and onion mix and a tin of butter beans. Side: Make herbed garlic butter by mixing together soft butter, one chopped garlic clove and some dried herbs. Spread this mixture onto slices of low GI white bread and then grill until crispy and golden. Dunk the garlic bread into the soup for a hearty meal that’ll warm anyone up from the inside.

Tummy-filling sweetcornSoup: This soup is a great way to use up leftover roast chicken pieces.

Fry two chopped potatoes and one onion in a little butter, then add a tin each of creamed sweetcorn and whole kernel corn (drained). Add a can of cream of chicken soup, a dash of milk and any leftover chicken, chopped into small pieces. Side: While the soup bubbles away, toast a few slices of low GI crushed wheat brown bread, top

with grated parmesan and grill until the cheese has melted into the bread. Serve the soup when the potatoes are completely soft, with a healthy portion of parmesan toasts.

Hearty veggie noodleSoup: If you have odds and ends of vegetables in your fridge, you can whip up this soup for almost nothing. Fry one onion a little oil, then add chopped carrots, celery and courgettes. Add two tablespoons of tomato paste and two cups of vegetable stock to the mixture. Bring to the boil, then add two cups of short pasta (macaroni, penne, fusilli or shells) and cook until the pasta is al dente. Side: To serve with the soup, cut slices of toaster white bread into cubes, sprinkle with olive oil and salt, then roast in the oven until crispy. Sprinkle the homemade croutons into noodle soup just before serving – scrumptious!

Creamy mushroomSoup: This soup couldn’t be simpler and it works for a laid-back dinner party starter. Fry two punnets of sliced mushrooms, one chopped onion and three cloves of chopped garlic in melted butter until all the mushrooms are brown and tender. Add two cups of fresh cream and a cup of vegetable or chicken stock, simmer for five minutes, then turn off the heat. Side: Cut slices of toaster brown bread into ‘soldiers’, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with brown onion soup powder, and bake until completely crispy. The brown onion soup gives them a salty, savoury flavour. Serve with the hot mushroom soup and top with a dollop of sour cream, if you have some.

Sizzling soupsTemperatures are dropping, socks are getting thicker and you’re suddenly finding you need an extra blanket on your

bed at night. Winter is here, and it brings with it more time snuggled up indoors, endless cups of tea and, of

course, bowls of steaming soup. There’s no better side for soup than fresh bread, so here’s a round-up of six super soups and the perfect bread sides to accompany them.

Brrr. The cold is finally really here to stay!

Join the adult colouring-in crazeAdult colouring books are all the rage right now. Turns out there are some health and psychological benefits of colouring, a fact that children may instinctively know (like so many other life lessons we should learn from our kids!). Most children naturally love to draw and colour and we actively encourage this in our children. Yet, sometime around “real school” age, we stop encouraging creative activities like colouring and drawing and instead encourage more structured academic activities. By adulthood, the idea of cracking open a colouring book seems almost laughable … except that researchers have been studying the benefits of this classic childhood activity for adults for over a decade. It might seem crazy that something as simple as a colouring book could actually be beneficial, but research continually supports this idea.

Stress reliefColouring has stress-reducing benefits. The reason? Colouring is said to calm the amygdala, the part of the brain related to the fear/stress response, while stimulating the parts of the brain responsible for creativity and logic. Colouring therapy is being used experimentally for those with anxiety and stress- related disorders. Some people report sleeping better when colouring for even 5 minutes before bedtime.

Focus & creativityThere’s a reason that adult colouring books are becoming a favorite among high-profile business professionals in high-stress industries and creative professionals. Even a short colouring session can help improve focus and spur creativity. Some offices are having group colouring sessions for employees as a way to improve group focus and creativity during big projects. While we may think of group colouring time as an activity for pre-schoolers, high-profile executives are joining the trend!

Social timeGroup colouring time is becoming an increasingly popular activity in many places as clubs and social groups pop up to facilitate it. Even libraries host adult colouring sessions.

Alternative to meditationMany people find it difficult to turn off and calm the mind. Colouring and other hands-on activities offer an alternative because they allow you to “do” something without the need for active concentration. Activities like colouring are able to produce a similar effect to meditation in the brain.

Adult colouring books: how toThere are hundreds of adult colouring books on the market, as well as dozens of opinions about the “right” way to colour them. Since adult colouring pages tend to be much smaller and more detailed than the colouring books of childhood, we suggest coloured pencils or very fine tip markers over crayons or regular markers.

Bottom lineColouring in is a fun and relaxing activity and an inexpensive way to relax, de-stress and spend some time with friends or your kids.

7AWSUM WINTER HOLIDAY GUIDE

FOLLOW ME BACK Nicci Cloke (Hot Key Books)A dark tale about the disappearance of a teenager. There is a touching moment when the family of Lizzie Summersall post a missing notice with the words: "Lizzie is a much loved sister, daughter and friend. She loves Harry Potter, roast potatoes and every kind of sweet except orange ones." Follow Me Back is also a love story, because we see Lizzie through the eyes of Aiden. His first view of Lizzie is not great: he thinks she is "mousy". He soon realises she is a girl who is "full of surprises". As he tries to solve the mystery of her disappearance, we also get to see her through her on-line exchanges. They reveal an engaging and shrewd young woman. But has she been reckless?

NEVER EVERS Tom Ellen And Lucy Ivison (Chicken House)A lively story centred around Jack and Mouse from different schools who go to the same ski resort on a school trip. Things start to go awry when Jack is mistaken for a French teen pop sensation. The humour is pitched well ("Mums and random pointless comments are like dads and bad jokes. Just why?"). Never Evers also deals with important issues for today's young people: the pressures to conform and to be popular, the dangers of feeling excluded, and the problems with laddish bravado. The book succeeds ultimately because you like both main characters. As she tries to come to terms with the problems of growing up, we see Mouse through her own witty internal dialogues. "Try and stand in a sexy way ... What is a sexy way of standing? Stop standing weirdly," she tells herself. The romantic scenes are touching and it's a pacy and fun read.

New mascotOn 16 May we had the wonderful opportunity to welcome our new mascot at the school. “Kuilie Cat” was introduced to all the learners during assembly. Our mascot is the symbol of good values, of respect, self-discipline, responsibility and honesty. Our learners are already very fond of our new mascot. He has accompanied some of our sport teams to matches and has visited some of the classes. We are proud of our mascot, because he is going to embody the positive spirit of all at De Kuilen Primary school.

Self-discipline celebratedDe Kuilen Primary school celebrates a value every term and the values that is celebrated is linked to a colour. This term we encourage self-discipline and on Monday 11 April our learners were permitted to wear something red to school and were encourage to bring something red in their lunchboxes in order to create an awareness for the term’s value. The passages are also rewarded with a self-discipline De Kuilen HB

Koorwenners by Stellenbosch KunswedstrydHoërskool Durbanville se koor het puik presteer by die onlangse kooroptredes.

Durbanville klop BishopsDurbanville se jong rugbyspanne speel kookwater rugby vanjaar.

Congratulations to both SMK and SSK for being invited to participate in the Applous Final in Stellenbosch on 6 August. Both choirs have the honour of being selected in the category More Experienced Choirs.

Best Play Festival Stellenberg High School celebrates the art of the theatre by hosting an annual Play Festival.

Every year, talented student writers produce masterpieces, of which the best (usually four) are chosen to be developed, directed and performed by the learners.

This year’s Play Festival was extra special: as this year is Stellenberg High School’s 30th birthday, six plays were chosen to be performed on the evening of 11 May.

Play Festival 2016 was one of the greatest yet and the wide variety of pieces – comedy, tragedy, romance, you name it – made it difficult for the judges!

Grade 9s: Guidelines to your future - Choosing the right subjects

Already know what you want to study? Then study up on entrance requirements. If you are clear about what you want to do, check out the websites of both public and private higher education institutions to verify their requirements, and let that guide your subject choices. Very importantly, look at a range of different institutions and courses within your field to allow yourself some choice and a Plan B after Matric.

Don’t know? Then leave as many options available as possible. Those who are not yet sure about their future direction should choose subject combinations that will leave them with options and room to manoeuvre later, including Maths and Science. Learners who struggle with precisely these subjects, should consider keeping only one of them to focus their efforts. (Maths Literacy should only be considered as a last resort, Payne advises.)

Consider what makes you happyAs you spend time at your desk every day, going from class to class, and completing your homework, be alert to which subjects make you come alive a little more than others. Determine which subjects mirror your interests and career dreams, and include them. Carefully research how your favourite subjects manifest in the working world, as you may potentially have more - and more interesting - options than you are currently aware of.

Consider what you are good atChoose at least two subjects in which you can do really well. Admission to higher education is performance-based, so it makes sense to do very well in some subjects rather than badly in all of them because you chose only so-called gateway subjects.

1.

3.

2.

4.

Grade 9 learners will soon be gearing up to select the subjects that will see them through to matric – an important decision which should not be left to the last minute and which should already be top of mind for

learners who want to give themselves the best chance for success in Grade 12 in 2019.

Don’t sell yourself shortYou may think you won’t stand a chance of getting good sufficient grades to enter higher education post-Matric. But remember that the South African National Senior Certificate has four levels of pass. While one of them is the degree pass, you could also qualify for diploma or higher certificate study. These two qualifications, which are normally vocationally or career-focused, could give you access straight to the world of work and even degree study if you wanted to do it later. There are also options in public and private FET colleges, or you may even be entrepreneurial and want to start your own business.

“The key to making the best subject choices for your future self is to ensure you do your research thoroughly, and at a comfortable pace, so you don’t have to rush the decision. Don’t leave it until the end of the year, when you might be tempted to just tick the same boxes your friends are ticking, and in the process set yourself up for frustration and disappointment,” Payne says.

When I grow up...

I want to...

Nola Payne, Head of Faculty: Information at The Independent Institute of Education notes that this is one of the first opportunities learners of this age will have to practice strategic decision-making that will have a major impact on their lives. It should be looked at as an exciting first step into their future as adults, and also a valuable learning tool, she adds. Below

are some tips and guidelines she has for helping them make this all-important decision.
