GGPS wind bandThe Golden Grove Primary School wind band, led by Mr and Mrs Malan, performed for the whole school on Friday 27 May 2016. Mr Malan introduced all the instruments to the school and the band played a few pieces for all the learners and teachers to enjoy. Keep up the excellent work GGPS wind band!

GSHS Jazz band collaboration celebrationThe Groote Schuur music department has grown tremendously over the past three years, offering learners the opportunity not only to study Music as a subject, but to perform on a variety of platforms throughout the year. The band, under the direction of Ms Ronel Nagfaal, performs at many gigs, from Westend to Jazz-on-the-Lawn, and members also travel annually to participate in the Grahamstown National Youth Festival.

This year we celebrated 18 years of the Cape Town Big Band Festival – a program established by Dennis Barr, the late husband of Ann Barr, who continued with the program since Dennis’s passing.

The festival is used as a platform to showcase Cape Town’s talented youth from previously disadvantaged areas. The festival, which was held over 2 nights with 4/5 bands, has grown tremendously over the years to a four-night performance with 24 big bands from across Cape Town participating. Uni-Sound/Groote Schuur showcases GSHS music students and friends.

Grade 7’s volcanoesThe Grade 7s of Bergvliet Primary School built volcanoes in Natural Sciences in order to test the reaction between acids and bases. There was much enjoyment and excitement when they “erupted” their volcanoes by combining the acids and bases.

Cheeky broccoli and cheeseSoup: Broccoli and cheese are a heavenly match, and this is a good way to disguise healthy green vegetables if your family aren’t mad about them. Fry half an onion in a little oil until soft. Add two cups of broccoli, a litre of chicken or vegetable stock and a tin of evaporated milk. Boil until the broccoli is soft, then add a cup of grated cheddar cheese. Blend until smooth. Side: Mix softened butter with grated lemon zest, then spread onto toasted low GI brown bread. Serve with the broccoli soup and enjoy.

Smoky bacon and beanSoup: The best thing about this soup is that you can make it with items from your kitchen cupboard or freezer. Simply fry a few rashers of chopped bacon until crispy. Add a tin of Italian tomato and onion mix and a tin of butter beans. Side: Make herbed garlic butter by mixing together soft butter, one chopped garlic clove and some dried herbs. Spread this mixture onto slices of low GI white bread and then grill until crispy and golden. Dunk the garlic bread into the soup for a hearty meal that’ll warm anyone up from the inside.

Tummy-filling sweetcornSoup: This soup is a great way to use up leftover roast chicken pieces. Fry two chopped potatoes and one onion in a little butter, then add a tin each of creamed sweetcorn and whole kernel corn (drained). Add a can of cream of chicken soup, a dash of milk and any leftover chicken, chopped into small pieces. Side: While the soup bubbles away, toast a few slices of low GI crushed wheat brown bread, top with grated parmesan and grill until the cheese has melted into the bread. Serve the soup when the potatoes are completely soft, with a healthy portion of parmesan toasts.

Hearty veggie noodleSoup: If you have odds and ends of vegetables in your fridge, you can

whip up this soup for almost nothing. Fry one onion a little oil, then add chopped carrots, celery and courgettes. Add two tablespoons of tomato paste and two cups of vegetable stock to the mixture. Bring to the boil, then add two cups of short pasta (macaroni, penne, fusilli or shells) and cook until the pasta is al dente. Side: To serve with the soup, cut slices of toaster white bread into cubes, sprinkle with olive oil and salt, then roast in the oven until crispy. Sprinkle the homemade croutons into noodle soup just before serving – scrumptious!

Creamy mushroomSoup: This soup couldn’t be simpler and it works for a laid-back dinner party starter. Fry two punnets of sliced mushrooms, one chopped onion and three cloves of chopped garlic in melted butter until all the mushrooms are brown and tender. Add two cups of fresh cream and a cup of vegetable or chicken stock, simmer for five minutes, then turn off the heat. Side: Cut slices of toaster brown bread into ‘soldiers’, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with brown onion soup powder, and bake until completely crispy. The brown onion soup gives them a salty, savoury flavour. Serve with the hot mushroom soup and top with a dollop of sour cream, if you have some.

Meaty lasagne soupSoup: If your family loves lasagne, they’ll adore this twist on the classic pasta dish. Fry mince with one onion and a chopped carrot until golden brown, then add two tins of chopped tomatoes and simmer. Add two cups of beef stock and a cup of elbow macaroni. Cook until the pasta is soft. Side: Toast three pieces of sliced white bread, then whizz in a blender until a chunky crumb is formed. Fry the crumbs in a little olive oil with some dried herbs, until crispy. Use these crunchy breadcrumbs to top the lasagne soup.

Sizzling soupsTemperatures are dropping, socks are getting thicker and you’re suddenly finding you need an extra blanket on your

bed at night. Winter is here, and it brings with it more time snuggled up indoors, endless cups of tea and, of

course, bowls of steaming soup. There’s no better side for soup than fresh bread, so here’s a round-up of six super soups and the perfect bread sides to accompany them.

Join the adult colouring-in crazeAdult colouring books are all the rage right now. Turns out there are some health and psychological benefits of colouring, a fact that children may instinctively know (like so many other life lessons we should learn from our kids!). Most children naturally love to draw and colour and we actively encourage this in our children. Yet, sometime around “real school” age, we stop encouraging creative activities like colouring and drawing and instead encourage more structured academic activities. By adulthood, the idea of cracking open a colouring book seems almost laughable … except that researchers have been studying the benefits of this classic childhood activity for adults for over a decade. It might seem crazy that something as simple as a colouring book could actually be beneficial, but research continually supports this idea.

Stress reliefColouring has stress-reducing benefits. The reason? Colouring is said to calm the amygdala, the part of the brain related to the fear/stress response, while stimulating the parts of the brain responsible for creativity and logic. Colouring therapy is being used experimentally for those with anxiety and stress- related disorders. Some people report sleeping better when colouring for even 5 minutes before bedtime.

Focus & creativityThere’s a reason that adult colouring books are becoming a favorite among high-profile business professionals in high-stress industries and creative professionals. Even a short colouring session can help improve focus and spur creativity. Some offices are having group colouring sessions for employees as a way to improve group focus and creativity during big projects. While we may think of group colouring time as an activity for pre-schoolers, high-profile executives are joining the trend!

There is a touching moment when the family of Lizzie Summersall post a missing notice with the words: "Lizzie is a much loved sister, daughter and friend. She loves Harry Potter, roast potatoes and every kind of sweet except orange ones." Follow Me Back is also a love story, because we see Lizzie through the eyes of Aiden. His first view of Lizzie is not great: he thinks she is "mousy". He soon realises she is a girl who is "full of surprises". As he tries to solve the mystery of her disappearance, we also get to see her through her on-line exchanges. They reveal an engaging and shrewd young woman. But has she been reckless?

NEVER EVERS Tom Ellen And Lucy Ivison (Chicken House)A lively story centred around Jack and Mouse from different schools who go to the same ski resort on a school trip. Things start to go awry when Jack is mistaken for a French teen pop sensation. The humour is pitched well ("Mums and random pointless comments are like dads and bad jokes. Just why?"). Never Evers also deals with important issues for today's young people: the pressures to conform and to be popular, the dangers of feeling excluded, and the problems with laddish bravado. The book succeeds ultimately because you like both main characters. As she tries to come to terms with the problems of growing up, we see Mouse through her own witty internal dialogues. "Try and stand in a sexy way ... What is a sexy way of standing? Stop standing weirdly," she tells herself. The romantic scenes are touching and it's a pacy and fun read.

Founder’s DayThe Grove Primary School’s annual Founder’s Day lunch was held on 29 May, celebrating the school’s 131st birthday! What a great event it was for Grovites old and new.

The Italian decor was great, the food delicious, and a range of fabulous folk music was presented by our music department. This fabulous day was enjoyed by all.

PNPS Facilitators’ CoursePinelands North is an inclusive school and so the school often needs to find adults who are willing to attend school with children who need extra help.

During May and June 2016, Rose-Anne Reynolds, Lisa Harrison and Ann Morton have trained 11 adults, most of them currently unemployed, to work with children in classrooms.

Early next term several of the trainees will return to the school to volunteer as facilitators to gain valuable experience.Some comments from the course goers:• “Thank you everyone for

making this course possible. It gave me a new outlook

on learning and looking at children, not judging them by their behaviour but really taking time to know the child was awesome.”

• “When I came I never knew what inclusion was, however, PNPS moulded me to do this and I would love to go into this career.”

Lerato’s HopeOur annual Lerato’s Hope Trading Day was held on Friday, 3 June.

Instead of our usual charity tuckshop every Friday, we had a fun day of bartering at our Lerato’s Hope Trading Day, where the children bring non-perishable food items to “barter” for tuckshop purchases. No cash is accepted on the day. A total of ten boxes was donated to Lerato’s Hope, a Charity Organisation supporting children and families affected by Aids.

The Shakespeare Schools Festival On Saturday, 4 June the hard work and patience of a group of talented pupils finally paid off when they performed in the Shakespeare Schools Festival of South Africa at Artscape. The Shakespeare Schools Festival is a highly respected organisation that aims to increase and develop students’ love and understanding of Shakespeare. This is the first time Westerford has entered the festival. The initative was taken by the newly formed Drama Society. It is impressive to see students paving new roads for future Westerfordians.

The play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream and was adapted to a 30-minute production for the Festival. The pupils of Westerford then decided to take it even further and adapted it to a Great Gatsby style. The cast consisted of about 20 pupils from all different grades and was co-directed by two Grade 11 pupils, Chelsea van Coller and Yuri Behari-Leak.

After many weeks of rehearsals and one long day at the Artscape, the pupils’ hard work paid off and their performance was extremely well received. Well done to them all!
