6 HEALTH
Lunchbox ideas from food & health celebrities
You exercise regularly because you want to enjoy the benefits of exercise. Exercise offers the same benefits to your your children. Here are seven of the most important
benefits.
Exercise helps children maintain a healthy weightChildhood obesity is becoming one of the biggest health issues facing our generation. And since obesity is a direct trigger for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension, it’s crucial for children to maintain a healthy weight.
Exercise builds strong muscles and bonesThe human body builds its bones during childhood (before the teen years). That means childhood is the optimal time to build bone density through exercise (especially body weight exercise). And strong muscles aren’t just something adults should have! Kids benefit from having strong muscles too – they’re less likely to suffer injuries while they conquer the playground.
Exercise boosts mood and improves concentrationKids need to be able to concentrate to learn. And they learn better and learn more when they’re happy. Exercise causes the body to release endorphins – natural happy hormones and tranquilisers. Not only do these leave kids feeling happier, it also settles their energy levels, making it easier for them to concentrate. If your kid can concentrate well, he’s more likely to perform better at school.
Exercise boosts self-image and self-esteemWhen you engage in exercise, you feel stronger, faster, fitter and leaner. This makes you feel more self-confident. Kids also feel that way after exercise.
Exercise in the form of team sports will improve social skillsTeam sports teach kids how to socialise and communicate. These improve interpersonal skills, which a kid will need – and rely on – for life!
Exercise helps kids sleep better (and sleep longer)Children need sleep – their brains are developing fast. But there’s e that this development only happens when kids sleep. So sleep deprivation is, quite literally, bad for a kid’s brain. Exercise provides the ideal release for kid energy, allowing the child to sleep well thereafter.
Exercise improves motor coordination and skillsThrough exercise, children refine and improve their motor skills and their coordination. This makes them better able to perform all sorts of tasks throughout life.
So sign your kid up for a team sport and make sure you make time to play with your kids (skip, hop, jump and race!). The benefits are powerful and long-lasting.

Making your child’s lunchboxes is the only way you can be sure you know what’s going in them. You can tailor them to suit their tastes and choose good-quality
ingredients to make them nutritious. Try to mix things up a bit so they aren’t eating the same old thing every day. Keep the ingredients fresh, the flavours
exciting, and make different options throughout the week to keep things interesting. For a well-balanced meal that will keep you going all day, aim for a
good mix of protein and carbohydrates with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
SavouryA flask of home-made soup with a hunk of nice bread and a small wedge of
tasty cheese, slices of home-made pizza, quiche or frittata, or pittas stuffed with mini home-made kebabs.
SweetA fresh fruit salad, a tablespoon of dried fruit, stewed fruit and natural yoghurt, a slice of fruit bread, fresh fruit skewers, oaty biscuits, home-made flapjacks, or
granola bars packed with lots of lovely nuts and seeds.
DrinksHome-made fruit smoothies, water with a wedge of fresh lemon or lime, milk,
or freshly squeezed fruit juice mixed with sparkling water. Pop a carton of 100% unsweetened fruit juice in the freezer overnight. Pack it in your child’s lunchbox
first thing and by lunchtime they will have a lovely slushy cold drink.
Jamie Oliver is an English celebrity chef, restaurateur and media personality known for his food-focused television shows and cookbooks, and more recently his global campaign for better
food education, especially in schools and school cafeterias and tuck shops.

Patrick Holford’s lunchboxes
Jamie Oliver’s lunchboxes
A well-planned lunchbox will energise your child, both physically and mentally. Carbohydrate-containing foods with a lower glycemic index (GI) are the foods
that supply a steady source of energy. Adding lean protein (the size of the palm) and a little fat (such as cottage cheese) helps to prolong steady energy release.
Adding veggies and/or fruit contributes to the vitamin content. Round off the lunchbox with a tub of plain live yoghurt and a bottle of water.
Sandwich ideasPuree vegetables such as leftover roasted vegetables to use as a sandwich spread. Add a little mayonnaise and some leftover meat and put on a low GI roll or use as a sandwich with rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Biltong and cottage cheese on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Mashed hard-boiled egg with homemade sandwich spread on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Nut butter and honey (raw) on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Tuna and mayo with lettuce and tomato on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread. | Toasted cheese and egg on rye or whole-wheat/low GI bread.
Patrick Holford is a pioneer in new approaches to health and nutrition. He is widely regarded as Britain’s best-selling author and leading spokesman on nutrition and mental health issues. Patrick is
also popular on radio shows and international television as a presenter, interviewer and guest.

Monday, 15 February is International Childhood Cancer Day. To help play your part in supporting children with cancer and their families, the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation, which provides nationwide physical and psychosocial support to children with cancer, is making it that much easier with its CHOC-olate loyalty programme. Not only can people help raise funds for the organisation, but be rewarded for it.
For a minimum monthly contribu-tion, members gain access to an array of 2-for-the-price-of-1 benefits including 2-for-1 movie tickets nationwide, 2-for-1 dining at over 750 restaurants across the country, 2-for-1 beauty treatments at over 750 service providers, and 2-for-1 tickets from Computicket outlets, up to the value of R150 each. Benefits can
also be redeemed on holiday or travel, with venues spread throughout the country. Fully utilised benefits would be to the value of more than R3 000 a month. Of the minimum contribution, over 50% goes to CHOC and the remainder goes towards the benefit costs. If a member opts to increase the donation portion, then the addition goes entirely to CHOC.
CHOC-olate will help ensure that CHOC expands services in line with the organisation’s growing number of beneficiaries. Without their holistic support, many children – particularly those from low-income households living far from treatment centres – would not be able to access or adhere to treatment, which can last up to three years.
Help support children with cancer through CHOC-olateDid you know that every
three minutes, somewhere in the world a family hears the devastating news that their child has been diagnosed
with cancer? According to the American Childhood Cancer Organisation, globally more than 250 000 children are
diagnosed with cancer each year. Fortunately, through the advances made in treatment,
childhood cancer is largely curable.

Decorate with pallets & glass jarsGet into the habit of looking at pallets and other materials with new eyes. When one goes on a site like Pinterest, one often wonders ‘why didn’t I think of that?’. Very simple ideas are very effective, as can be seen in these few samples of using pallets and things from nature, like wild flowers and sea sand. These things cost nothing and add a rustic, down-to-earth feeling to any home,
Wall vasesCreate individual wall vases with old, weathered pallets, mason jars and clamps. Thess wall décor ideas are perfect examples of how to use ordinary stuff in very creative and beautiful ways.
Pallets are one of the biggest trends in upcycling materials for décor purposes. The creative possibilities of creating beautiful pieces with pallets are almost endless, not to mention budget friendly.
Following a Mediterranean diet is just as easy when it comes to packing healthy lunches and lunchboxes. You can use wholesome, natural fish products, including herring, calamari, and herbed and peppered mackerel, which is a real hit when added to veggies or a fresh salad. For lunchboxes, yummy humus dips, pates and unprocessed cheeses add some protein to the mix. Throw in some veggie crudités and a delicious fresh fruit and you will be set up for the day. Cheeses like modified cheese and Edam cheese are gentle in flavour and loved by most children. For those who have dairy allergies, add some drained chickpeas and beans for extra protein instead. Olives, which are high in unsaturated fats, will keep you fuller for longer and add those booster carries for fussy eaters. Don't forget the treats! Halva is a delicous Mediterranean delicacy. Packed with protein and calories, a small piece goes a long way to quietening that sweet tooth. Try out different flavours, such as vanilla or chocolate. (See page 6 for more lunchbox ideas.)
The Mediterranean diet is all about healthy eating habits and enjoying the food you eat.

think of? Perhaps you envision crusty loaves of bread, tender olives, and fresh herbs. Or maybe you imagine a
glass of red wine shared with friends. Better yet, you might picture yourself watching the sunset over a lush vineyard
from the open deck of a grand Tuscan villa. All these things are characteristically Mediterranean, but they do not define the Mediterranean lifestyle. In the same way, there is no single Mediterranean diet, because the word Mediterranean is used to describe a group of more than 15 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
You may be wondering what then constitutes the Mediterranean diet trend that has recently become popular. Rather than prescribing a strict set of rules for foods to eat and foods to avoid, the Mediterranean diet offers guidelines for a healthfy way of life. The Mediterranean diet is about more than just food, however – it is about living life to its fullest and being healthy as you do. The Mediterranean diet is about eating wholesome foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, wholesome grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. And who could forget olive oil, fresh fish, and good wine?
Though the Mediterranean diet is high in dietary fat, more than half of the fat calories consumed in the Mediterranean diet come from monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fat comes from sources like olive oil and avocados. In 2009, a study was published in the Journal of Nutrition regarding the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the risk for chronic disease. The results of this study suggest that an eating pattern high in plant foods and unsaturated fats, like the Mediterranean diet, can reduce the risk for lower abdominal obesity and coronary heart disease (Romaguera et al., 2009).

Over the last couple of weeks the children at Pinelands North have had the opportunity to experience what life is like in a wheelchair. We do not do this to diminish the difficulties people who must use a wheelchair on a daily basis go through, but to raise awareness and a real sense of experiencing another person’s perspective. The children have realized the difficulty and frustration that comes with not simply being able to get from one place or lesson to the other. They have also enjoyed being able to help their classmates. We are helping to raise a more empathetic generation of children who, because they have ‘walked’ in someone else’s shoes, will approach the world differently in the future.
Wheelchair ‘walks’Every week our Grade 7s pair up with our Grade 1s to spend 30 minutes reading time together. This has become a highlight of the school week for both grades! At the beginning of each year, the Grade 7s start reading to the Grade 1s, and later in the year the roles are reversed. The mentoring relationships that form because of this activity, last all year and these benefits are felt by both older and younger children.
Literacy at its bestThe newest offering to our extramural programme at Pinelands North Primary is Mandarin. These language classes currently happen once a week for our Grade 4 and 5 pupils, but Grade 3, 6 and 7 pupils will start in Term 2 because the staff have been astounded at the enthusiasm with which the children have embraced this opportunity. The Confucius Institute at UCT coordinates the teaching of this programme, and provides the teachers and workbooks for the school.

This year, Sun Valley Primary School has had the privilege of being able to supply each student in Grade 4 with an iPad Mini. This is the first time that every student within a grade, regardless of their economic background, will have access to an iPad.
Although the iPad’s are school-owned devices, students will have the full benefit of a managed and adequately set up digital device to learn with. This outlay of 130 iPads is the first of it’s kind at Sun Valley Primary School and is the accumulation of our successful 3-year“Bring Your Own Device” project, which has forced us to rethink the way we teach and learn in our Sun Valley Group of Schools. Sun Valley Primary School falls within a group of schools that includes Sunbird Pre-Primary and Silvermine Academy High School, all of which are implementing a very strong and relevant digital learning programme.

Pinelands High School Water Polo Tour to KnysnaThe Pinelands High School U19A boys and girls travelled to the Oakhill Open Water Festival in Knysna from the 11–14 February 2016. The festival takes place over four days in two constructed pools in the Knysna harbour, making for a truly unique experience. It attracts 26 teams from across the country.
There was an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship amongst the teams at the festival, an ethos that is strongly emphasised by the organisers. The Pinelands High boys won all seven of their matches by considerable margins (every outfield player scored at least one goal) and the girls also performed fantastically to dominate all but one of their seven matches. Christopher Timm was voted as the best boys’ goalkeeper of the festival and Winona Autagavaia was the top goal scorer in the girls’ division. The Pinelands players did Pinelands High School proud with their manners, sportsmanship, spirit and charisma.
Sydney Jacobs has been selected for the U17A SA Water Polo team.
With swimming on the rise at Sun Valley, and after a very successful Night Gala the previous evening where the SunValley Boys squad came second overall, the Sun Valle Inter-House Gala proved to be a huge success.
In their new 10-lane pool, Sun Valley were able to accommodate three students per house in each race. A number of records were broken on the day by the talented swimmers.
Luke Slabber broke four records that were set over 18 years ago. In the end, it was De Stadler who WON the Inter-House Championship by a matter of 5 points – the closest victory in years!

Cyclathon is Habitat for Humanity’s biggest fundraising event of the year and took place from 5pm on Friday the 29th to 6pm on Saturday the 30th at the V&A Waterfront Ampitheatre.
The Westerford, Rustenburg, Rondebosch, Bishops and Herschel Habitat committees worked extremely hard to ensure that this fun event was a success.
Live bands entertained the public while Habitat members worked the crowds, selling raffle tickets and persuading people to sign up for cycle slots.
Months of planning for this 25-hour Cyclathon was well worth it, as our goal of raising R85 000 was achieved and beaten, raising an amazing amount of R91 000, a newrecord!
All the money raised goes towards building houses in underprivileged areas. The committees are looking forward to getting involved in these builds.
Thank you to all the sponsors and to the many people who donated prizes. A special thanks goes to teachers-in -charge, Mr Jordi and Mr Menze, Spirit portfolio and the Westerfordians and their families and friends who came down to the Waterfront in large numbers to support!
