From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Producing Artistic Director PresentsWelcome to our 14th season, which we’ve themed It’s All About Perspective!

When you think about it, “perspective” is really a cool thing; it’s something we each have, and many times it’s different from someone else’s. It can be unique, just like each of us. It can also be a shared perspective. Each show this season will look at ideas, situations, and/or relationships through a perspective that may reveal a different facet, a new slant, or even another way of looking at something.

As part of my exploration and research of what shows to produce, I collaborate and pick the creative brains of our artistic staff. For this season, I happened to ask Doug Baird, a Tabard associate artistic director, “What’s on your short list to direct?” He replied, “Starting Here, Starting Now.” He added, “I fell in love with Starting Here, Starting Now back in the 1970s when I first heard the recording. Some friends had seen the show in New York and turned me on to it. David Shire and Richard Maltby Jr. were able to write songs that could stand alone and that spoke to me as a performer — and I hoped then one day to be a part of a production. Each song is a little play and acting piece that has drama or comedy or discovery. Wonderful songs. I was fortunate to direct Baby, another of their shows, a few years back. And I’m thrilled and grateful to be directing this show now. And that’s my perspective on this show.”

And so we kick off our season of different perspectives with the aptly titled musical Starting Here, Starting Now.

Given the theme of new beginnings that underscores the songs in Starting Here, Starting Now and Tabard’s season theme of “Perspective,” the cast and staff have selected InnVision Shelter Network as the show’s designated non-profit, for the work they do to help homeless families and individuals in our community achieve a new beginning that includes permanent housing, self-sufficiency, and a new perspective on life.

I am grateful that Tabard continues to thrive and grow. This summer alone we added these wonderfully creative people to our staff: Hayley Lovgren as Marketing/ Communications Coordinator; Ed Sengstack has returned as Marketing/ Communications Director; and Marilyn Watts has advanced to Audience Services Director. We are all thrilled to have them part of the Tabard family.

Starting Here, Starting Now is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

Thank you for joining us for Tabard’s 14th season. As we begin this season of perspective I would like to thank the many local businesses and companies who have joined us as business sponsors and community partners. Please take a look at the sponsor/partner pages in this program, or on our website, and support the local companies who support us. Thanks to their generous contributions, Tabard can continue to produce great theatre, arts education programs, music events like TOSPS Tuesdays, and be that inclusive place where you can participate in every area of what we do (ever considered auditioning for a play or being on a crew? You should!) I would also like to invite those of you who run a business to consider becoming a Tabard business sponsor. There are many perks and benefits that go with sponsorship; you can read all about them on our website at www.tabardtheatre.org. Thank you for being with us and enjoy the show!

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. For Tabard she’s directed Scapin, Dames at Sea, The Gifts of the Magi, The Dog Sitters, Sabrina Fair, A Taffeta Wedding, It’s a Wonderful Life, Crossing Delancey, Babes in Hollywood, and the award-winning production of Trying; she created and co-wrote More Than Petticoats; and she both directed and wrote Stompin’ at the Savoy, Bandstand Beat, and The Duke, The Count, and Me as well as Love, Laughter & Linguine. Representing Tabard, she serves on the Executive Committee of San Jose Downtown Association and chairs SJDA’s San Pedro Square business committee.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.

Samuel Cisneros (Music Director, Piano) is a highly respected pianist and music director who has worked with most of the theatre companies in the South Bay as well as accompanying STOCtet. He returns to Tabard having accompanied Love, Laughter & Linguine last season; he will music-direct the final show of our season, Violet.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and has designed sound for many Tabard shows as well as for TheatreWorks, City Lights, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and various clubs and bands for over 30 years. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T. he studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds a M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an MBA from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Tom Dossa (Bass) returns to Tabard after playing bass for last season’s production of Love, Laughter & Linguine. He has been playing bass or guitar in musicals for over a decade. Some previous shows he has performed in include Hair, The Rocky Horror Show, Little Shop of Horrors, and Cats. When not playing an instrument he wishes he was.

Ian Earley (Bass) is excited to be playing his first Tabard show.

Kiana Jackson (Production Intern) received her B.A. in theatre arts at Clark Atlanta University in Georgia. She is overjoyed to continue her career in theatre with Tabard by taking on the role of production intern to the company and stage manager of The Immigrant. Ultimately, her goal is to pursue an M.F.A. in production or stage management.

Robert Lewis (Sound Board Operator) returns to Tabard after working in multiple backstage and technical roles for Love, Laughter & Linguine; 1776; The Elves and the Shoemaker; Making God Laugh; The World Goes ‘Round; The Duke, The Count, and Me; and Babes in Hollywood. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now a 26-year resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant. Happily married for 34 years, he enjoys singing and playing mandolin.

Migi Oey (Scenic Artist) has worked on the Tabard technical team since Bandstand Beat in 2011. She designed the set for the award-winning Trying. Her knowledge of the performing arts stems from photographing musicians to working with local theatres, schools, and corporate events. She is skilled at drawing, painting large-scaled murals and faux finishes, photography, floral design, textiles, and graphics.

Tyler Risk (Choreographer) has been a part of Bay Area theatre for more than 30 years, both performing onstage with many groups as well as choreographing for the acclaimed Foothill Music Theatre, where she also recently performed as Carmen Bernstein in Curtains. After surviving a near fatal motorcycle accident in 2009, she returned to the stage with great joy in 2011 in Tabard’s Follies Concert Version, with thanks to all the amazing people in her life for being there for her.

Joan Rubin (Stage Manager) is managing her third show for Tabard, following Making God Laugh and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder. She has stage-managed a dozen shows for Woodside Players and Woodside Community Theatre, as well many for Saratoga Drama Group and South Bay Musical Theatre. She notes it has been a most pleasurable and rewarding experience working with the serendipitous actors and staff of Tabard. Joan is excited to return later this season to stage-manage Tuesdays With Morrie.

Rover Spotts (Lighting Designer) is most excited to be lighting his first show here at the Tabard Theatre and working on Starting Here, Starting Now. During the day he works in the IT and Performing Arts departments for a private K-12 school. He also works for the City of Sunnyvale’s Theater and has designed shows for Sunnyvale Community Players, Lyric Theatre, 42nd Street Moon, Theatre Rhinoceros and various other Bay Area theater companies.

Marilyn Watts (Costume Designer) has been Tabard’s resident costume designer since the company’s second season and designed the costumes for the award-winning Trying. Marilyn is also Tabard’s audience services director, has her own catering company, and is costumer for many other theatre companies. What brings an even bigger smile to her is anything related to I Love Lucy.

Ralph Zazula (Percussion) is a drummer and guitar player who has only recently ventured outside the comfort of his home studio to join the exciting world of Bay Area musical theatre. “I enjoy the unique musical challenges found in these arrangements and thrive on the tight deadlines associated with rolling out a new production.” Ralph is thankful for the support of his wife and two children, and blogs about his musical experiences at http://zazula.me.
