Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Producing Artistic Director

Here we are, folks – the end of our season themed “perspective.” It’s been a lovely journey. Thank you for being with us. You’ve received the brochure for next season, our 15th! We’ve themed it “Coming Home.”

Please take a look and consider subscribing to our six-show season before May 10th to take advantage of our Early Bird Subscription opportunity!

Now, though, I am thrilled that we are bringing to you Violet, a show I fell in love with first through the music. It is glorious, exciting, deeply moving, and heart-felt. Then I fell in love with the script and from there with Violet, herself. We all have scars, some visible, some invisible. Through that shared circumstance, I think we can all share in Violet’s experience to have her scar healed. It is that perspective that I encourage you to embrace as you hear and feel these songs and this story.

As with every Tabard production, we have designated a non-profit to receive a portion of our concession proceeds. The designated non-profit for Violet is Communities United for the work they do to provide underserved children after-school opportunities in the arts and sciences to broaden their perspective on the world in which they live and the potential for which they can strive.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being with us for Violet and the end of our 14th season! You make what we do meaningful and worthwhile.

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

As we conclude Tabard’s 2014-15 season with this wonderful production of Violet, I want to thank you for your support throughout this past year. From our “Celebraiser” fundraising event last September to our elevator appeal

in December and January, you have donated generously to our company and we thank you.

Next month we, again, appeal to your generosity. On May 5, 2015, starting at 12:01 a.m., Tabard will join hundreds of other bay area non-profits for Silicon Valley Gives 2015, a 24-hour online fundraising effort. That day, donors will be encouraged to support non-profits they care about most. We hope, for you, that list will include Tabard. To make or schedule a donation, go to svgives.razoo.com. Your support is vital to a non-profit theatre like Tabard, so we hope you will contribute to this campaign on May 5. Thank you and enjoy the show.

Violet is presented through special arrangement withMusic Theatre International (MTI).

All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.421 West 54th Street, New York, NY 10019Phone: 212-541-4684 Fax: 212-397-4684

Migi Oey (Scenic Artist) has been part of Tabard’s technical team since Bandstand Beat in 2011. She designed the set for the award-winning Trying. Her knowledge of the performing arts stems from photographing musicians to working with local theatres, schools, and corporate events. She is skilled at drawing, painting large-scaled murals and faux finishes, photography, floral design, textiles, and graphics.

Dori Shimer (Percussion) has been studying and playing drums and percussion for longer than she’ll admit. Initially focused on orchestral and symphonic band music, in the early 80s she expanded her musical sphere to include community theater. She’s played in the pit orchestras for South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, Roberta Jones Junior Theatre, and Peninsula Youth Theatre, among others — and, once again, Tabard. She’s thrilled to be back with the Tabard family, especially since she was their first percussionist when Cathy first started the troupe.

Ruth E. Stein (Properties), when not on stage, runs her own properties design and set dressing business, “propEARLYdone.” She was recently honored with six 2013/14 Silicon Valley Small Theatre Awards, including “Actor/Props Designer to Watch Next Season.”

Jeanine Tesori (Composer) has written four Tony-nominated scores for Broadway: Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center, Thoroughly Modern Millie (lyrics, Dick Scanlan), Caroline, or Change (lyrics, Tony Kushner), and Shrek the Musical (lyrics, David Lindsay-Abaire). Her first off-Broadway musical, Violet, written with Brian Crawley, received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1997. She has been the recipient of many other honors including Drama Desk and Obie awards, and was cited by ASCAP as being the first woman composer to have “two new musicals running concurrently on Broadway.” She has produced sixty CDs for Silver-Burdett Ginn’s Making Music and the original cast albums for Twelfth Night, Violet, and Caroline, or Change.

Evan Zazula (Violin) is thrilled to be playing his first show with the Tabard Theatre Company. He has previously played with Peninsula Youth Theatre, including their recent production of Les Misérables. When he isn’t playing violin, Evan enjoys making films, and can be found attending a nearby high school.

Ralph Zazula (Guitar) is excited to return to Tabard and play alongside his son Evan. In addition to playing for Tabard, he has played drums and guitar for South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, Peninsula Youth Theatre and Palo Alto Players. Ralph is thankful for the support of his wife and two children, and blogs about his musical experiences at http://zazula.me.

Director’s Note: Bring Me To Light! – Violet’s Story

Some wounds are visible; others are hidden. For Violet, her scar — which we the audience never actually “see” but only imagine — carries with it the enormous internal pain of outrage, self-pity and shame.

Violet boards a Greyhound Bus to begin a quest for a miracle cure for her terrible, external wound, not realizing that her inner pain is what is most in need of healing. In our beauty-obsessed world in which people are often ostracized for being “different,” it isn’t hard to understand her confusion. But Violet’s journey is more than a bus ride; it is a metaphor for her pursuit of a deeper healing.

On her way Violet meets other wounded souls, particularly Flick, an African-American Army soldier, who understands the scars of prejudice, under-education, and poverty. They form a bond, as each is able to “see” the true other.

Our play’s final song is aptly named, “Bring Me To Light!” — Violet is ultimately able to emerge from a soul-darkness and loneliness into self-forgiveness, love and enlightenment.

I think each of us can locate something deep in ourselves with which to relate in this lovely tale of heartfelt human struggle and triumph. Enjoy Violet!
