Thank you for “Coming Home to Tabard for the Holidays”! Theatre on San Pedro Square truly is a fun and exciting place to be, and we’re greatly pleased you’ve chosen to spend some of your time with us.

We follow our run of Miracle on 34th Street with three exciting concerts of holiday music on December 19th (3 p.m. & 8 p.m.) and 20th (2 p.m.) done Big Band Style by the always-fabulous Nineteen Jazz Orchestra. These concerts typically sell out, so I encourage you to get your tickets sooner than later.

Looking for a different way to spend New Year’s Eve? Will Durst will be performing two shows that night: 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., leaving you plenty of time to end the year with a hearty laugh and still get home safely before the ball drops.

The designated nonprofits for our holiday shows are Loaves & Fishes for Miracle on 34th Street and St. Paul’s Food Closet for Big Band Christmas. Each has been chosen for the work they do to help those in need in our community.

All of us in the Tabard family wish you and your family the most blessed, grace-filled, and loving holiday season you can imagine.

Director’s NoteChristmas means many things to different people. For some, it is a sacred religious observance, for others it is a welcome excuse for family gatherings; still others may see it almost as an intrusion because they do not share the same spiritual beliefs. As I have grown older, and especially with children grown and often away at the holidays, Christmas seems to rush around with increasingly alarming rapidity. Wasn’t it just Christmas 2014?! Do we have to do this again so soon?!

Whatever take on Christmas anyone has, it is certain that the commercialization of the holiday has also grown with alarming rapidity. Christmas decorations once were rarely seen before December; then Thanksgiving; then early November; now Costco sports displays in September. There is no bigger opportunity “to sell” than this holiday. And so it is refreshing to revisit this holiday classic, Miracle on 34th Street, with its reminder that Christmas, regardless of anyone’s religious beliefs, is fundamentally about generosity, openness and kindness. Our Kris Kringle is fighting the forces of disbelief with his presence — a metaphor, really for imagination and playfulness, wonder and astonishment — even against a backdrop of an often cynical world around him... and us.

So, please join us — and Kris — in affirming belief! ...in the Tinker Bells and Kris Kringles and magic spirits of the world! Have we ever needed them more?

meeT The arTiSTS

Karen DeHart (Libby Collins) has performed on many of our local stages, including Tabard, City Lights, Broadway by the Bay, Foothill Music Theatre, and South Bay Musical Theatre. Favorite roles include Mama in Distracted, Reno in Anything Goes, Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, and Roxie Hart in Chicago, among many others. She has a B.A. in theater from Santa Clara University, and also trained at the Circle in the Square in New York. Special thanks to Mom, Dad, Ken, and Kameron for their love and support.

Patrick DeRosa (Charlie Maxwell) is a multi-talented performer. He is credited with a broad range of character roles performed throughout the Bay Area. At Tabard Patrick last performed as Father in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, as well as two roles in 10 in 10: Perspective (the Mugger in Family Jewels and Tuesday in Day after Day). Patrick completes his artistry as a musician and professional visual artist. His current passion is the pursuit of 3D printing for sculpture and industrial practices. Patrick graduated from UCSC with a B.A. in theater arts.

Kevin Kirby (James Douglas) returns to Tabard after appearing in Making God Laugh, Follies Concert Version, and The Story of My Life and serving as the voice of Charles Loring Brace in Homeward Bound. Favorite roles elsewhere include Kipps in The Woman in Black (Dragon Theatre), Jules in Sunday in the Park with George (Foothill Music Theatre), George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Palo Alto Players), Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady (West Valley Light Opera), and Roy Cohn in Angels in America (City Lights), among many others.

Claire Lentz (Shirley O’Brien) is 15 years old and is delighted to be performing with Tabard Theater. She has recently been seen in Peter Pan (Michael) and The Sound of Music (Brigitta) with The Mountain Play, Les Misérables (Young Cosette) with South Bay Musical Theater, Gypsy (Baby June) with Symphony Silicon Valley, as well as The Music Man (Amaryllis), Gypsy (Baby June), and Annie (Molly) with Broadway by the Bay. She loves to spend her free time drawing, painting, writing, and reading.

Mary Melnick (Janet Davies) is excited to return to the Tabard stage after playing John Adams in the all-female version of 1776. She wouldn’t miss an opportunity to work with Jay Manley once again after many great shows at Foothill Music Theatre: Anything Goes (Erma; Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle nominee for Best Supporting Actress), Ragtime (Mother; Dean Goodman Choice Award), Carousel (Julie Jordan), and How to Succeed… (Rosemary). By day, Mary “performs” for a kept audience of middle school science students.

Nicolae Muntean (Buddy Schlubman) is thrilled to be in his first Tabard show. Nic has been seen in many Bay Area productions over the years; recent roles include House and Garden (Warn Coucher) and Arcadia (Jelleby/Richard Noakes) at The Pear, Smash (Lumpkin) at Dragon Productions, and The Assembly Women and Ring Round the Moon (Messerschmann) at Foothill College. Favorite roles include Faustus in Dr. Faustus at Foothill, Claudius in Hamlet with Shady Shakespeare, and Leon Schwab in Voice Of The Prairie at City Lights.

Catherine Snider (Rosie O’Hara, Music Director) is pleased to be making her Tabard debut, though this is her 21st show with Jay Manley! Catherine has music directed all over the Bay Area; she has received nine Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle nominations and is honored to have won four. She has also received eight Dean Goodman awards. By day, Catherine works at The Harker School and directs the music for their award-winning Conservatory, which has taken three shows to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Bob Visini (Milton Keighley) is thrilled to return to Tabard. Credits with South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Broadway by the Bay, Foothill Music Theatre, and Hillbarn include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Lawrence Jameson), Promises, Promises (Dr. Dreyfuss), The Producers (Roger DeBris), The 1940s Radio Hour (Clifton), Beauty and the Beast (Lumiere), Bye, Bye, Birdie (Mr. MacAfee), La Cage aux Folles (Georges), The Pajama Game (Prof. Hines) and Annie (Daddy Warbucks). Bob is a marketing executive and lives in Sunnyvale.

Gregg Zigler (Baxter Greenstreet) is making his Tabard debut with this production of Miracle. Previous productions include Promises, Promises (South Bay Musical Theatre), Curtains, Spelling Bee, My Fair Lady, Pippin, and Urinetown (Foothill Music Theatre), and The Pajama Game (Saratoga Drama Group). He also sings in the 12-man a cappella choir Keynote Vocal Group with some of the best friends you can imagine. The snow outside is so bad, Gregg is just delighted that you made it here to share in our heartwarming miracle.

Shirley Benson (Properties) returns to Tabard after doing props for Tabard’s first “live radio play” a few years ago, It’s a Wonderful Life. As resident props designer Shirley will be working on Lyric Theatre’s A Little Night Music and West Bay Opera’s Yevgeny Onegin early next year. She has also performed and worked backstage for San Jose Children’s Musical Theater, Santa Clara Musical Theater, and Mission City Opera. She has sung in Baha’i choirs and will again be performing with the Coventry Carolers at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. She has created and/or written and directed a handful of productions for Tabard, including the most recent Homeward Bound: An Orphan Train Journey. Cathy spends her non-theatre time training to be a certified yoga instructor through Almaden Yoga, with a focus on yoga for seniors.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and has designed sound for many Tabard shows as well as for TheatreWorks, City Lights, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Sunnyvale Community Players, and various clubs and bands for over 30 years. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist in numerous rock bands and in theatre orchestras. While at M.I.T. he studied acoustics with Professor Bose, and he holds a M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an MBA from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Hayley Lovgren (Playwright) was born and raised in the Bay Area and received a B.A. in theatre arts from Santa Clara University. She has performed with Tabard (A Taffeta Wedding, The World Goes ‘Round, 1776), Cabrillo Stage, Bus Barn Stage Company, and as a founding member of The Cardboard Box Theatre Project, before moving to Boston to receive an M.F.A. in musical theatre from The Boston Conservatory. Since returning to the Bay Area she has performed in SF Sketchfest and Chicago Sketchfest with 3 Woman Show and most recently in Paul Dresher Ensemble’s Max Understood and Fogg Theatre’s world premiere of The Cable Car Nymphomaniac.

Jay Manley (Director) is delighted to return to Tabard after directing last season’s Violet (Theatre Bay Area 2015 Best Ensemble and Best Musical nominee). Jay is an award-winning director whose musicals and plays throughout the Bay Area have garnered numerous nods from the Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, Theatre Bay Area, and Dean Goodman Choice Awards. For 30 years with his spouse Vance Martin, Jay has led popular theatre tours to New York, Ashland, and other major theatre production centers, through their company New York Theatre Tour (www.nytheatretour.com). Next up for Jay: Arches, Balance and Light, a world premiere for Ross Valley Players in February, and a return to the 4,000 seat Mountain Play, high atop Mount Tamalpais, with West Side Story in May. Special thanks to this outstanding community of artists who have created our Miracle on 34th Street.

Nick Nichols (Lighting Designer), Tabard’s executive director, is also the resident lighting consultant for Tabard and Theatre on San Pedro Square, designing lighting for many of Tabard’s productions since he joined Tabard in 2014. Before moving into arts management, Nick spent 20 years working as a lighting designer and/or technical director for Villanova Summer Shakespeare, Princess Cruise Lines, Ballet San Jose, and American Musical Theatre of San Jose. Nick holds an M.F.A. in technical direction/lighting design from Temple University and has taught lighting and technical theatre at Santa Clara University, San Jose State, and U.C. Santa Cruz.

Migi Oey (Scenic Painter) has been part of Tabard’s technical team since Bandstand Beat in 2011. She designed the set for the award-winning Trying. Her knowledge of the performing arts stems from photographing musicians to working with local theatres, schools, and corporate events. She is skilled at drawing, painting large-scaled murals and faux finishes, photography, floral design, textiles, and graphics.

Melissa Sanchez (Costume Designer) received her B.A in technical theater with an emphasis on costume design from San Francisco State University. Productions there included Chess, A Streetcar Named Desire, Barber of Seville, Spring Awakening, and Tartuffe. Other work includes References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot, Wallflower, and La Llorona. She recently costumed West Side Story and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for City Lights. She joins Tabard this season as resident assistant costumer and assisted with costumes for our recent production of Death Takes a Holiday.

Joyce Taylor (Stage Manager) appeared in Tabard’s recent Homeward Bound, as well as in The Best Christmas Pageant Ever where she was also assistant to the director. Joyce has been part of Cathedral of Faith’s World of Arts ministry for 20 years, where she has performed in a variety of roles from narrator to demon. For the last nine years, she has been the Drama Ministry Director where she directs and manages Christmas and Easter productions, dramas, and scripture readings.

Marilyn Watts (Assistant Costume Designer) has been Tabard’s resident costume designer since the company’s second season and designed the costumes for the award-winning Trying. Marilyn is also Tabard’s audience services director and is costumer for several theatre/dance companies. What brings an even bigger smile to her is anything related to I Love Lucy.

Our Mission Statement: Founded in 2001, The Tabard Theatre Company is the managing and resident theatre company of Theatre on San Pedro Square. Tabard is committed to making a difference in the community through the arts by providing enlightening theatre experiences that are appropriate and affordable for audiences of all ages. Tabard is an inclusive environment where the community can participate in every area of the plays, musicals, educational programs and music concerts we produce. We champion new works, innovative interpretations and unique works rarely produced. With a specific focus on altruism and philanthropy, Tabard reaches out to the under-served, such as the blind/visually impaired and children in low-income areas, and donates a portion of each production’s concession proceeds to a designated local charity whose work is thematically related to each show.
