From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

Wlelcome to our 16th season, an exciting lineup of plays and musicals that all explore courage in some fashion, embracing that “imagination is its own form of courage.”

We are thrilled to kick off this season with the Tony award-winning musical Memphis, a show that had its birth here in the Bay Area. We are especially jazzed to be able to do this production on our brand-new stage!

We have this new stage thanks to the many generous donors who provided the financial resources, and those who built the stage from the floor up: Joe Cassetta & his team of volunteers (Harley Goes, Lina Nichols, Ken Fukui), volunteers from Cadence Design Systems, and the professionals from Case Design & Remodeling. The new stage features a sprung floor on one level, making it more comfortable for dancers, and a more uniform shape that lends itself to more imaginative and flexible staging... and, hopefully, a better theatre-watching experience for you!

For this production, the designated non-profit is Arts Angels, Tabard’s in-school arts education and mentoring program serving underserved children.

Thank you for joining us for Memphis. We look forward to having you with us throughout the season.

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

Dear Friends: In addition to producing wonderful shows like Memphis, Tabard has always been committed to providing theatre education for underserved youth in our community. Last year, Tabard established tuition-

free after school theatre programs, for children grades K through 5, at Empire Gardens Elementary School and for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley in East San Jose. These programs were funded by a one-time grant from the Donor Circle for the Arts through the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. This coming year, thanks, in part, to a grant from the San Jose Water Company, we will be able to continue and expand our programs at Empire Gardens but we still lack the needed funding for the Boys & Girls Clubs programs.

I’m hoping that supporters like you, who know the value of theatre, will consider making a donation of any size to help Tabard continue this work with these underserved children. You can make a donation on our website at http://www.tabardtheatre.org/donate.html or mail your check to Tabard Theatre, 5663 Chambertin Drive, San Jose, CA 95118. Thank you so much — and now, please enjoy Memphis.

Edward Clark (Ensemble) is thrilled to be in his first Tabard Theatre show. In the past four years he has been given the opportunity to sing background for musical artists such as Journey and Josh Groban. He has also appeared on Oxygen’s original series Fix My Choir, hosted by Michelle Williams and Deitrick Haddon. Currently Edward is a student at San Jose State University, where he is earning his B.F.A. in Animation/Illustration.

Samantha Daisher (Ensemble) is enjoying her first production with Tabard Theatre. She is fairly newly arrived in California from Ohio; she moved here to pursue her acting and singing. She has been a part of numerous musicals, plays, and choirs. Since moving, she has booked a few commercials, some movie extra work, and is a part of a murder mystery dinner theater. She hopes to continue to add to her résumé and is excited to be a part of Memphis!

Christopher Denson (Ensemble) couldn’t be more excited to be performing for the first time on the Tabard Stage. He is currently a senior at Santa Clara University studying theater and business. He was recently seen in WVLO Musical Theatre’s production of Footloose as Garvin. Other appearances include Calvin in the staged world premiere of Larissa Fasthorse’s play What Would Crazy Horse Do? at SCU, and as an ensemble member for SCU’s In the Heights. In the future, he hopes to keep performing in and around the Bay Area.

Yuliya Eydelnant (Ensemble) is ecstatic to be in Tabard’s Memphis! Recent credits include Rock of Ages (Featured Dancer/Ensemble) at Center Repertory Company, West Side Story (Rosalia) and The Rocky Horror Show (Featured Dancer) at City Lights Theater Company, Man of La Mancha (Flamenco Choreographer/Flamenco Dancer/Fermina) at Los Altos Stage, Urinetown (Soupy Sue) at Cabrillo Stage, In The Heights (Yolanda/Principal Dancer/Assistant Choreographer) at Palo Alto Players, and Rent (Mimi Marquez) at United Kingdom Roehampton Players.

Marcus Gaye (Ensemble) has been performing on stage since the age of eight. Memphis will be Marcus’s 38th show overall, and his first with Tabard Theatre. Some favorite past roles include TJ (Sister Act), Sonny (Grease), and Max Detweiler (Sound of Music), all at Children’s Musical Theater San Jose. Marcus also performed in Super Bowl 50 with Milpitas High School, where he is currently a senior. Marcus hopes you enjoy the show!

Director’s Notes

When I was asked to direct Memphis for Tabard, my first thought was: How do we squeeze this great, big, glitzy Broadway spectacle onto Tabard’s intimate corner stage — a performing space with no “flies” (overhead) and almost no off-stage “wings”? I had seen this fabulous 2010 Tony-winning “Best Musical” in New York and felt a little awed at the challenge. But then I read the script and listened to the score. This process is always illuminating, because it reveals the “bones” of the show, minus the bells and whistles — the basic material you will have to work with. And in this case, my doubts were erased. Memphis contains a solid and moving story, and though mostly fictionalized, that story has great truth. And it was a story I was eager to be a part of the telling. So my hope was that in the intimacy of the Tabard staging, stripped of Broadway razzmatazz, the story would shine through and be a moving and even instructive experience for our audiences. To that end, we have chosen to keep the cast, many of whom double in multiple roles, on stage throughout most of the show, both as observers and story-tellers.

“Courage” is the theme of Tabard’s 2016 - 17 season, and “courage” epitomizes the very heart of this play. Memphis, the City, in the 1950s, like most of America, was a bastion of racial prejudice. It was also, quite literally, the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. Those who tried to desegregate popular music in that environment were courageous indeed.

In our play, a white record producer asks Felicia, an African-American singer, “Have you ever sung this new music, this rock ‘n’ roll?” To which she responds, “Sure. All rock ‘n’ roll is is negro blues sped up.” In the 50s, rejecting the vanilla melodies of Pat Boone and Patti Page, white teens were irresistibly drawn to the driving, rhythmic, and more overtly sexual sounds of Elvis Presley and others, who had effectively adopted black rhythm and blues for their hugely popular, “white” songs. The stories of white singers making a fortune “covering” songs originally created by black artists are legion. And in our play, when the white disc jockey Huey describes the black music he loves as “…the music of my soul,” Delray, owner of the juke joint where he features the singing of his very talented sister Felicia, responds, “It ain’t the music of your soul, baby. It’s the music of my soul. And my soul don’t want your soul stealin’ none of my music.” So, Memphis recounts an important part of America’s popular music history.

In Memphis, out of a shared passion for African-American rhythm-and-blues, two people, from different races and cultural expectations, share a dangerous and explosive relationship, straining every accepted norm. It takes enormous courage to buck such pressures, and Felicia’s and Huey’s journey is the spine of our play.

We hope you enjoy our production of Memphis, with the wish that this up-close-and-intimate presentation brings you illumination and pleasure.

And as our Huey is fond of saying, “Hockadoo!” - Jay Manley

His previous Tabard productions include roles in 10 in 10: Perspective, Tin Pan Alley Rag, The Elves and the Shoemaker, and the Conservatory@Tabard youth mentorship production of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. Eddie’s devotion to theatre extends offstage as well; he works as a professional stagehand when he isn’t busy singing and dancing!

Zoe Godfrey-Grinage (Ensemble) has been a part of many productions around the Bay Area. A graduate of Oakland School for the Arts, she has been a part of musicals such as Hairspray, playing Little Inez, and Les Misérables playing Madame Thénardier. Mike Hugill (Simmons/White Man) is honored to be part of this tremendous story of how a Memphis DJ could have such an amazing impact on rock and roll’s introduction! Back for his second show with Tabard, Mike has also performed with South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre Company, and Tada Productions. Since retiring, Mike spends time with grandkids, collector cars, golf, and his wife, Debi, with whom he just celebrated his third anniversary after having been reunited with her at a high school reunion.

Our Mission Statement: Tabard’s mission is to provide enlightening theatre experiences which are appropriate and affordable for audiences of all ages. We champion new works, innovative interpretations, and unique plays rarely produced. Tabard is an inclusive environment where the community can participate in every area of the plays, musicals, educational programs, and music concerts we produce. With a focus on altruism, Tabard reaches out to the under-served, such as the blind/visually impaired and children in low-income areas, and donates a portion of each production’s concession proceeds to a designated local charity.
