Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Artistic Director

If someone had told me in the summer of 2001, when Tabard put on its very first production, that there would be an 18th season, I would not have believed. Even more so, I would not have believed that the venue in which we’d be presenting

our 18th season would officially be named Tabard Theatre! And such is the amazing, wondrous, and exciting journey of this not-for-profit company committed to bringing works not commonly produced and new works to eager audiences like you.

Another Roll of the Dice is the 21st new work that Tabard has produced; of those 21, it is the 10th new musical. You may ask, “How is it that Tabard has this privilege and opportunity?” Well, thanks for asking! In our 2011-2012 season we produced the musical The Tin Pan Alley Rag, created by Mark Saltzman. Through the process of working on that project, Mark and I developed a producer/creator relationship through which he would keep me posted on his projects that could be appropriate for Tabard. He emailed me about his new Frank Loesser project based on the stories of Damon Runyon, and I said “Yes!” And that’s how we come to Tabard presenting Mark’s latest piece! Later in this program, Mark describes his journey with this project from concept to workshops to production.

In this 18th season, we really do have a fabulous lineup of four musicals and two comedies, one romantic, the other hysterical! The four musicals, three are all new to the Bay Area, with one having been birthed at TheatreWorks several years ago. If you’re not already a subscriber, I invite and encourage you to join us for our 18th season, themed Snapshots: Capturing Life’s Special Moments. I promise you this season’s shows will be filled with many lovely, touching, funny, and special moments that you will embrace as part of the special moments in your life.

For now, let’s journey together to Runyon and Loesser Land!

From Nick Nichols, Executive Director

Wlelcome as we kick off Tabard’s 18th season with this wonderfully fun production of Another Roll of the Dice. On your way in, I hope you noticed some of the improvements we’ve made to our home here at Tabard Theatre.

Thanks to a grant from the Farrington Historical Foundation, we now have new energy-efficient LED lighting for our auditorium. We have new decorative lights over the bar and, thanks to a generous gift from Board Member Jack Borok, we have new signage proudly proclaiming our new venue name — Tabard Theatre. We have upgraded our theatre’s electrical systems and will soon be installing exterior banners and new LED hi-definition video monitors made possible through a Capitalization and Sustainability Grant from the City of San Jose. $10,000 of this City grant is a challenge grant to establish a $20,000 reserve fund for the care of this charming, historic theatre. You can donate to this new fund — the “1874 Fund” (named to commemorate the year Farmers Union opened in this building) by going to www.tabardtheatre.org/donations and clicking on “1874 Fund.” Help us raise the final $10,000 by donating now when every dollar you give becomes two! Help us to preserve this historic gem of a theatre and, as always, enjoy the show!

Michael Hirsch makes his Tabard debut with Another Roll of the Dice. After a long hiatus, he recently returned to the stage appearing in South Bay Musical Theatre’s Chess and The Bridges of Madison County and then Tenderly at Limelight Actors Theater. He’s a husband, father, product guy, kendo black belt and avid board gamer. michaelpaulhirsch.com

Christopher Pynchon is incredibly excited to work with Tabard. He has been acting for the past seven years; you may have caught him onstage at some point, in shows like Thursday Night Live at the Playwright’s Festival and The Illusion, where he appeared as Prince Florilame at Ohlone College. More recently he played the council member IQ in the energizing musical Hairspray. Christopher worked under a life-changing mentor at Ohlone College and feels well equipped to begin working around the Bay Area with theater and film experience!

Susan Tonkin is thrilled to make her Tabard debut. As Guys and Dolls is her all-time favorite show, a trip to Runyonland with Loesser music is a dream! Previous “dolls” she’s portrayed include Princess Puffer in The Mystery of Edwin Drood at Diablo Valley College; Alice Beineke in The Addams Family at Stage 1 Theatre; and Guenevere in Camelot and Lily St. Regis in Annie, both at Douglas Morrisson Theatre. Susan lives in Pleasanton with her husband and her two adorable kids. She will return to Tabard in Uptown Holiday Swing.

Aaron Weisberg is excited to return to the Tabard stage, having previously appeared in The Elves & the Shoemaker. He is no stranger to this theater, where’s he’s performed a variety of roles including Finchboy in Thunderbabe!, Rocky in The Rocky Horror Show, and The Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors. His favorite role is that of husband, and he is greatly enjoying this show as the first musical production featuring “Mr. & Mrs. Weisberg.” Next up, see Aaron as Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady with Woodside Community Theater later this fall.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) founded Tabard in 2001 and has produced every show since. Having been in “show business” for over six decades, she has lost track of how many shows she’s done. In the mid-1990s she created, produced and co-hosted the weekly TV show Theater This Week. A produced playwright, director, teacher, and actor, she especially enjoys telling stories and giving others the opportunity to participate in that, whether as artists or attenders. In her non-theatre time she practices and teaches yoga, including aerial yoga.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) has been with Tabard since 2001 and has designed and/or built the set for nearly every mainstage show since then. A retired engineering manager with a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A., he has significantly helped Tabard raise the bar on the look of its shows. He also serves on Tabard’s board of directors. Theatrically, prior to Tabard Joe stage-managed and/or produced nearly 20 productions for Saratoga Drama Group (now South Bay Musical Theatre).

Cindy Weisberg is excited to make her Tabard debut with this talented cast including her very handsome husband of almost one year, Aaron. Favorite roles include Catherine in Pippin and Paulette in Legally Blonde for Sunnyvale Community Players and Fran in Promises, Promises at South Bay Musical Theatre. Cindy is proud to have directed youth and adult productions all around the Bay Area, most recently Los Altos Stage Company’s Little Women. Offstage, she can be found playing with her adorable new dog, or taking a trip to the shady side for some wine-tasting.

Gregg Zigler makes his third appearance at Tabard. He previously shared the stage with fellow Dice cast and staff members in Miracle on 34th Street at Tabard, Promises, Promises and The Pajama Game at South Bay Musical Theatre, and George M! at WVLO Musical Theatre. Other recent shows include Musical of Musicals (the Musical) at Tabard and Curtains at Foothill Music Theatre. He also sings in the 12-man a cappella choir Keynote Vocal Group. Gregg can’t wait to share his take on a few Damon Runyon characters with you all!

Samuel Cisneros (Music Director) is a highly respected pianist and music director at many theatre companies in the South Bay, as well as accompanist for STOCtet; he just completed a very successful of Into the Heights at City Lights Theater Company. He returns to Tabard after serving as music director for the award-winning Violet, as well as Adrift in Macao, Musical of Musicals (the Musical!), Crowns, I Do! I Do!, and Starting Here, Starting Now. He was also assistant music director for Death Takes a Holiday and accompanist for several other Tabard shows. Later this season he will return to music-direct Snapshots and Queen of the Mist.

John DiLoreto (Sound Designer) is Tabard’s chief audio engineer and resident sound designer, and has designed sound for over 40 Tabard shows as well as productions for TheatreWorks, City Lights, Sunnyvale, Children’s Musical Theater, South Bay Musical Theatre, WVLO Musical Theatre, Palo Alto Players, and Hillbarn. He is also a former record producer, recording studio owner, and keyboardist/vocalist in numerous rock bands. While at M.I.T. he studied acoustics with Professor Amar Bose, and he holds an M.Eng. from U.C. Berkeley and an M.B.A. from Stanford. By day, he is Tabard’s operations director.

Kevin Kirby (Director) directed Tabard’s The Cemetery Club; he also appeared on this stage in Love Letters, The Miracle Worker, Follies, The Story of My Life, Making God Laugh, Miracle on 34th Street, and returns later this season in The Explorer’s Club. Prior directing credits include musicals (Falsettos, Forever Plaid), comedies (You Can’t Take It With You, The Dining Room), and dramas (Night Sky, Terra Nova). Kevin is also an occasional theatre reviewer for the Palo Alto Weekly. He is thrilled to be directing at Tabard and working with such a fantastically talented cast and crew. He will also direct Beau Jest for Tabard later this season.

Carsten Koester (Board Operator) is excited to have found Tabard, having recently relocated to the Bay Area from Brussels. Between 2004 and 2015, he worked on an average of five productions per year with various English-speaking theatre groups based in Brussels. For these companies he served as lighting designer or assistant, sound designer, often in combination with lighting, and/or creating video/projections as well as assisting with set construction. Carsten returns to Tabard this season to design the lighting for The Explorers Club, Snapshots, and Queen of the Mist. Nick Nichols (Lighting Designer) is Tabard’s executive director. Before moving into arts management, he spent 20 years working as a lighting designer and/or technical director for companies such as Villanova Summer Shakespeare, Princess Cruise Lines, Ballet San Jose, and American Musical Theatre San Jose. Nick holds an M.F.A. in technical direction/lighting design from Temple University and has taught lighting and technical theatre at Santa Clara University, San Jose State, and U.C. Santa Cruz.

Kristen Reimer (Stage Manager, Props) is excited to be working on her first Tabard show. Most recently, she served as the weekend stage manager for Cathedral of Faith’s 2018 Easter production Signs. When not working as a nanny, she can be found carefully plotting the demise of the characters in her screenplays and anticipates the day they come alive on screen.

Melissa Sanchez (Costume Design Assistant) received her B.A. in technical theatre, with an emphasis on costume design, from San Francisco State University. A busy costumer, she has worked with many Bay Area companies including Palo Alto Players, Teatro Vision, City Lights Theater Company, and Silicon Valley Shakespeare. Her Tabard shows include Miracle on 34th Street, Swift Justice, I Do! I Do!, Crowns, Memphis, Musical of Musicals (the Musical), Peter and the Starcatcher, and Adrift in Macao. Look for more of her costume magic throughout our 18th season!

Ann M. Smith (Board Operator) is a theatre veteran from other locales and a proud Northwestern University graduate. She is pleased to be joining Tabard for the first time and looks forward to a happy, full season in San Jose! This season she is managing props for The Explorers Club and will also stage-manage Queen of the Mist.

Marilyn Watts (Costume Designer) has been Tabard’s resident costume designer since the company’s second season. She has designed over 100 productions, 53 of them for Tabard. Some of her favorites are Tabard’s productions of Death Takes a Holiday, Homeward Bound, Gifts of the Magi, and Stompin’ at the Savoy. Marilyn is also Tabard’s audience services director, and the costume designer for DanCyn Studio’s competitive dance team for 15 years.

Damon Runyon (Author) - Alfred Damon Runyon was born in October 1880 in Manhattan, Kansas, and died in December, 1946, in another Manhattan: the one in New York. A master of the short story, his work has entertained millions with the humor and antics of characters like Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson, Dave the Dude, and Nicely-Nicely Johnson. Runyon had exploits as a journalist in the Mexican War covering General George Pershing; he also covered the great baseball era of Babe Ruth. Runyon’s story The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown inspired the Broadway musical and movie Guys and Dolls. From his tale Madame La Gimp arose the film Lady for a Day and its remake Pocketful of Miracles; both were directed by Frank Capra. Other Runyon films: The Lemon Drop Kid with Bob Hope and Little Miss Marker with Shirley Temple. Scholarly interest in the Runyon literary idiom generated the publication of Runyonese: The Mind and Craft of Damon Runyon. In 2018, Penguin Books will publish a new Runyon compilation, tentatively titled Guys and Dolls: Stories of Broadway and Old New York.

Mark Saltzman (Creator) - Playwright-screenwriter-songwriter Mark Saltzman began his career in N.Y. with Jim Henson, writing for the Muppets. His Sesame Street sketches and songs (including Caribbean Amphibian) earned him seven Emmy Awards. But behind Kermit’s back, Mark was writing cabaret shows and musicals that played at New York night spots, including the Village Gate, where he co-wrote the long-running revue A, My Name is Alice. For network television, Mark wrote Mrs. Santa Claus, the holiday musical starring Angela Lansbury with songs by Jerry Herman. For the movies, he wrote The Adventures of Milo and Otis and Three Ninjas Kick Back and has written screenplays for SONY, Universal, and Disney. His TV movie The Red Sneakers, directed by and starring Gregory Hines, aired on Showtime in 2004 and was nominated for a Writers Guild Award. In 2007, Mark served as writer-producer of the Disney Channel TV show Johnny and the Sprites starring John Tartaglia. Mark’s musical The Tin Pan Alley Rag opened at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1997 and was nominated for five Los Angeles Ovation Awards, including Best Musical. The show has played at many theaters and made its New York debut at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Laura Pels Theatre, where it was nominated for an Outer Critics’ Circle Award. Mark’s comedy Mr. Shaw Goes to Hollywood, based on the 1933 visit of George Bernard Shaw to the MGM studio, premiered at the Laguna Playhouse in April 2003 and has been optioned for the movies. His stage musical Romeo and Bernadette was launched at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, played around the world, and will have a New York workshop in November 2018, produced by Amas Musical Theater. Mark is a graduate of Cornell University. He is proud to be president of the Arnold Glassman Fund, a charitable foundation that provides grants for documentary film projects. More at MSaltzman.com

Every musical, like every super-hero, has its own origin story, and the Tabard audience is a part of this one. Another Roll of the Dice has had numerous workshops and developmental steps, but here in San Jose, we are taking the first real plunge into a full production at a professional theater.

Dice has rolled coast-to-coast, first as a workshop at the Pasadena Playhouse, next up the slopes of the Big Horn Mountains for the Wyoming Theater Festival and, as of last June, invading the Boston Conservatory of Music for an all-student tryout. As with any new show, changes were made at every stop according to audience reactions. Further changes will no doubt occur as a result of this San Jose production. So, Tabardians, consider yourself part of the long, maddening, and euphoric process of creating a new musical. And speaking personally, I’m glad this crucial phase of this show’s evolution is happening here, on friendly grounds, where you warmly received an earlier musical of mine, The Tin Pan Alley Rag.

I hope you’ll follow the future of this show as it swings on to its world premiere in 2019. Every new musical is a roll of the dice, and my thanks go to the Tabard staff, particularly Cathy Cassetta, Kevin Kirby, and Sam Cisneros for taking a chance on the show, and to you, audience, for standing by us at the gambling table. May Lady Luck smile on us all.

Our Mission Statement: Tabard’s mission is to provide live entertainment experiences that are enlightening, appropriate, and affordable for audiences of all ages. We champion new works, innovative interpretations, and unique plays rarely staged. Tabard is an inclusive environment where the community can participate in every aspect of the plays, musicals, educational programs, and music concerts we produce. With altruistic attention to the underserved, Tabard reaches out to communities such as the visually impaired and children in low-income areas, and donates a portion of each production’s concessions proceeds to a designated local charity.
