From 1st March 2011, it will be mandatory in the Northern Territory for people who have contact or potential contact with children to hold a Working with Children Clearance Notice. This regulation applies to volunteers and well as employees. The cost of the Clearance Card

(known as the Ochre Card) is $5.00 for volunteers.

Across the College, we have many generous parents and friends who volunteer their time and talents for the betterment of our students. If you intend to volunteer your services at the College, be it as a sporting coach, tutoring students, or driving a bus, you will need to register for a Card. The Card remains valid for a period of two years. If you are unsure about whether or not you need to apply for a card, contact SAFE NT on 1800 723 368. Application forms can be obtained from the Bath Street reception desk, or from the Ochre Card website.

The Parents and Friends Association met for the first time this year last Tuesday night. Reports were provided on the progress of a number of projects funded by the Association, such as the interactive white boards at Bath Street, the curtains at Traeger and the new ovens in the Home Economics Room at Sadadeen.

The Association will hold its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 17th

March, commencing at 7.30pm at the Sadadeen Campus library. It is vital that we continue to have an active and committed leadership team for the Association. Please consider becoming a regular participant in the Association s activities and/or nominating for the 2011 leadership team.

Likewise, we are seeking nominations for the College Advisory Board. There will be two vacancies to fill at the Annual General Meeting on Monday 14th March. The normal monthly meeting of the Board will follow the AGM.

During the next fortnight, Sadadeen and Traeger campuses will hold their annual House Swimming carnivals; Sadadeen will gather on Friday 4th March, and Traeger, on Thursday 10th March. These promise to be happy occasions, with plenty of House spirit and good fun. Parents and family members are welcome to come along to join in the days activities.

Reflection

Recently, the College Finance Committee met with the College Architect and the decision was made to postpone the opening of the new College Hall, which will be known as The Marian Centre . There have been delays due to the wet weather, besides some complications with the laying of the new floor, and the civil works has proved to be more extensive than originally planned. Rather than go ahead with the various ceremonies, with the building not finished, a different date has been proposed (yet to be confirmed); namely 6th May.

We will proceed with the Opening School Mass, however, and this will be held at the Alice Springs Convention Centre on Friday, 18th March, commencing at 9.30am. Bishop Hurley will lead that celebration and the Marist Brothers Provincial; Br Julian Casey will be in attendance.

Campus News: Bath St Life continues to be busy at the Bath Street Campus. This week the Year 1 and 2 classes have been travelling to the pool each day for swimming. Although the water has been a little cool in the morning, the programme has gone very well. Our Open Afternoon last Thursday attracted a number of visitors to the campus for a quick hello and a look around. Thank you to those of you who came and introduced yourselves to the teachers

the partnership between home and school is integral to success in all levels and experiences in the long school journey.

URGENT! URGENT! URGENT! We are currently looking for a replacement Children s Crossing Monitor, as Mr Wulf Pfau is finishing his employment with us tomorrow. We thank Wulf for his commitment to the position and wish him well in the future. This is a paid position, for approximately 10 hours per week. If you are interested or know of someone who may be available, please contact the office on 89508666.

STAFF NEWS This week we welcome back Mrs Christine Honsa after a brief spell of Long Service Leave. She looks wonderfully refreshed and we thank Mrs Karen Nicolai for her work in the office while Christine was away.

CASUAL CLOTHES DAY Tomorrow is the first of the casual clothes days for 2011. The students may wear casual clothes to school and are asked to bring a gold coin donation, which will be forwarded to the Marist Missions. Each casual clothes day throughout the year collects funds for a range of charities, usually associated with the College.

TRANSITION TIMES Next week our Transition students will begin full days at the campus. They have handled the longer days this week very well and we look forward to having them with us full-time next week.

UNIFORM MATTERS Please try and ensure that your children wear their sports uniform on their allocated PE lesson day. If you are unsure of the correct day, please write a note in the Student Organiser to clarify the correct day.

Campus News: Sadadeen SADADEEN ASSESSMENT POLICY Parents of Year 9 to Year 12 students are asked to read the Assessment policy attached in this newsletter. Here at Sadadeen the staff have voted to adapt this policy for 2011. Please be aware of the consequences if your child fails to submit set assessment tasks on time. If you have any further queries, please contact me at the College.

CASUAL CLOTHES DAY Tomorrow, Friday 25th Feb. Monies raised goes to Marist Missions. A gold coin donation is expected, and I ask that all students choosing casual clothes to be mindful that normal classes are occurring and suitable attire needs to be worn.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL Next Friday the 4th of March the annual OLSH Sadadeen Swimming Carnival will be held. The Swimming carnival is a compulsory day for all students at OLSH. The student s names will be marked at the beginning and at the end of the day. Students are expected to arrive at the Alice Springs Swimming Pool by 8.15am and will be free to leave from the pool at the end of the day around 2.30pm.

We advise students to bring plenty of water to drink, a broad brim hat, sunscreen and a lot of enthusiastic house spirit. The school will be running a fundraiser BBQ for the East Timor Group on the day, and the canteen will also be open at lunch. However it is a good idea for students to bring food/ snacks from home.

Each Sports House has a theme, and students are encouraged to dress up in their house colours. Girls however must be in a one piece swimming suit or if they only have a bikini, a

singlet/shirt must be worn over the top. Shorts must be worn by boys and girls. The management at the pool has requested no hair color, spray paint or streamers.

The Year 11 PE class has helped organise the event and will also be helping run the swimming carnival on the day. It promises to be a fantastic day and it would be great to see as many parents there as possible. If you d like to get involved or help out on the day then please call Peter Augustin at OLSH on 8950 7399.

SADADEEN UNIFORM MATTERS With respect to the College sports uniform, it is pleasing to see that the majority of our students are choosing to wear plain black shorts of an appropriate length, no more than 8 cm above the knee. Most students are also wearing suitable lace-up sandshoes or sneakers. Tights, short shorts, yoga pants and non-lacing soft shoes are not to be worn as part of the College sports uniform.

In the main, our students wear the College uniform with pride. However, some students are not wearing the appropriate College sports uniform. The Campus Staff are taking steps to address uniform maters at school and we ask for your support to ensure that your sons and daughters meet the College uniform expectations.

Campus News: Traeger TRAEGER PARISH MASS This is scheduled for March 6th at 9:30am. It is an expectation that students attend this one off celebration within the parish community. Only our student leaders are expected to wear full school uniform, others, casual.

YEAR 5 HOMEWORK CENTRE This takes place on Wednesday 3:00-4:00pm. This will be held in our library where the students must be collected from at 4:00pm please.

OPENING MASS (PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE) Our opening College Mass is now at the CONVENTION Centre, on March 18th .All students are to attend school firstly so that the rolls and homeroom items for the day can be taken care of prior to leaving. Students will walk to the Convention Centre and be bussed back. Please check the newsletter for further details.

BUS TRAVELLERS When our students are waiting for the bus in the afternoon they have been asked to wait on the footpath and not move towards the road side until the bus has stopped. If your child/ren travel by bus could you please discuss this with them. A reminder also that rubbish is not to be dropped in the area and the Shell servo is out of bounds.

DESERT STORM AFL trials are this Friday 25th March for 13 and Under at Jim McConville Oval, Milner Rd. Please note; students need to make their own way there. Please sign your child out through the Front Office if you are collecting them from School.

Community News VETiS (Vocational Education and Training in Schools)

The Industry Engagement and Participation Officers (IEPO s)from the Department of Education and Training, David Curby, Melanie Daly, Tracie Pearson and Monica Bennion provide support to all senior students doing VET courses. The aim of their VETIS program is to provide a pathway into the workplace, trades Apprenticeships and traineeships for students. Students doing the VET courses will be required to do a Structured Work Placement in an industry which is aligned with a TAFE/Training Organisation course they will be attending. The placement allows them to gain valuable practical workplace skills, knowledge and attitudes.

We are keen to hear from businesses in Alice Springs who are willing to host our High School students in Structured Work Placements. If any school families or friends would be interested in supporting this program please contact us on 8959 5517.

P & F News The P&F for 2010 had a fantastic year of fundraising and we would like to thank all past and present committee members for all their hard work. Sadly we farewelled kiim Parnell who made a huge contribution to the school community, Kiim and her family have relocated to Darwin. Last year the main fundraiser conducted by the parents and friends was the OLSH Fete. We raised approximately $39,000 dollars which was a fantastic effort by the whole college community.

The P&F allocated monies to each of the three campus last year as follows:

Bath Street Library Equipment $1,851 Shade for rear playground $14,100 Smart Boards x 3 and projectors $18,635

Traeger Campus Data projectors and screens x 3 $5,100 Extension of existing Playground Equipment $6,000

Sadadeen Campus Home economics blinds $1,600 Bench seating X 2 outside the front office wall $3,000.

The AGM will be held on 17th March at 7:30pm at the Sadadeen Campus library. The P&F is a great way to meet new people and become a part of the school community. It also allows you to have input into the allocation of funds throughout the year. Please show your support for your school and attend the AGM. The P&F meet once a month. AUS SWIM We are in desperate need of trained swimming instructors. If you are interested in learning how to teach swimming please contact Sam Typuszak at the Bath St campus. The last two weeks the Bath St students have been attending swimming and we have not had enough qualified instructors to implement the swimming programme.

The P&F would be willing to discuss part payment of the instructor s course in return for paid employment of swimming instructors during the swimming lesson programmes.

The next AUS SWIM courses will be run in May and September.
