I thank my God whenever I think of you,

And every time I pray for all of you;

I pray with joy!

Philippians 1:3

It is with sadness that OLSH College Bentleigh acknowledges the passing into eternal life of Sr Mary Fyfe

FDNSC. Sr Mary is an alumnae of the College and also past teacher and past Deputy Principal.

Sr Mary held the position of Superior General of the Congregation of the Daughters of Our Lady of the

Sacred Heart until May 25, 2013 when due to ill health she had to submit her resignation from the role.

Whilst in the position of Superior General Sr Mary came from Rome to celebrate the 70th anniversary of

the College. Sr Mary always showed a keen interest in the life of the College and strongly supported the

mission of the school.

Sr Mary’s dedication to the education of girls, her leadership of the OLSH sisters worldwide and her

commitment to our motto Regnet Christus was unwavering. We are grateful for the gift of the life of Sr

Mary Fyfe to our OLSH Bentleigh story and for the inspiration she was for so many people within Australia

and throughout the world.

In truth Sr Mary Fyfe lived the values of our OLSH Proclamation…a woman of heart…faith-filled, who

reverenced relationships, pursued excellence and touched the hearts of others.

TO BE YOUR HEART

May your name be my last word

O Jesus may your name be heard

May my last breath be your love,

Jesus may I be your heart.

Only this I desire, to be your heart on earth

Jesus use me to spread your love to all

Use me to spread your love to all.

This evening, a number of staff and students are participating in our inaugural St. Vinnie’s Winter Sleepout. The evening will include a simple meal together, a guest speaker from St. Vincent De Paul, the packaging of toiletry packs to be given out on the Footscray Soup Van and a time of prayer and reflection. To those students and staff who are giving so generously of their time and forgoing a comfortable bed in the hope of raising awareness as you stand in solidarity with the most vulnerable, we say an enormous thank you. By your actions, you remind us all that we are heart people called to touch the hearts of others. A special thank you to Mrs Josie Dilettoso for all she has done to facilitate our Sleepout.

Next Friday the Issoudun girls who are currently participating in the Hartzer Park residential programme will have their Retreat Day. We remember them and pray for them that their hearts and minds continue to be opened to God as they share this special day together in the midst of what has been an incredible journey.

Finally, we turn our thoughts to our brothers and sisters who at this moment may be risking their lives on the open ocean in search of a new life and the recent response of our nation’s leaders to their plight: “In the long term, we, a first world country with a commitment to the Refugees Convention, will not stop the boats until we work cooperatively with our neighbours seeking better upstream processes and protection for asylum seekers in our region and negotiating an equitable distribution of resettlement places. Let's hope the boats do stop before the election. And let's hope that after the election whoever is in government can call a truce on the race to the bottom, committing to the hard diplomatic work needed for a regional solution to a regional problem. With every step like the PNG Solution, we Australians show the rest of the region that we are only special because we think we are; and we're not. Just judge us by our actions. When in a tight spot, we use our neighbours.” (Fr. Frank Brennan sj, Eureka Street, www.eurekastreet.com.au PNG move proves Australia is not special, July 2013)

This week we celebrated the academic achievement of many of our students at an impressive Academic Awards Assembly; over 120 members of the wider OLSH community came to applaud over 100 awardees. At OLSH we are committed to building a learning community of excellence, providing a well-rounded girls’ education where all are committed to life-long learning. All that we do in learning and teaching is anchored in a fundamental commitment to a culture of learning and engagement. The partnership between parents and staff is an integral part of the family spirit in the College. We place strong emphasis on family, the first educators of the child. When a student enrols in OLSH College, the entire family signs up; parents become part of our endeavour to promote our students’ moral, intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical growth.

What is the award criteria?

Consistent Application to Studies awards recognises students who have demonstrated a consistent, organised and enthusiastic approach to their studies across a majority of their subjects.

National Self-Detection Program for Scoliosis Brochure

What Is Scoliosis? Scoliosis is a lateral or sideways curve of the spine. The spine also rotates on its long axis as it curves. It usually develops during early adolescence (age 10-13 years) when growth is most rapid. What Is The Cause Of Scoliosis? The cause is unknown, but 80-90% of cases occur in otherwise healthy adolescents. This is called idiopathic (cause unknown) scoliosis. We know that scoliosis is NOT contagious and NOT caused by bad posture, a soft mattress, carrying a heavy school bag or junk food. Why Is Early Detection Important? While very small curves are common and of no significance, about 2% of girls have a curve which warrants medical observation during the growth period. Three girls per 1,000 will require treatment during the growth phase. If treatment is required, the earlier it is undertaken, the better the long-term result. This is the basis for screening since in the early stages; scoliosis produces no symptoms. The way to detect scoliosis is to look for it!

Well it is only one month to go before the Arts Festival, to be held in conjunction with Open Day on Thursday, 22 August. In the Visual Arts we are gearing up for our most diverse show in recent times. There will be work on display from all year levels in the school and we encourage everyone to come and view the displays either when you drop students off for the afternoon or when you pick them up after classes, at the end of the day. There will be some light refreshments available. Open Day is exactly that. Our department will have much of the work produced this year displayed in the Hall and will be open from 12.00 midday until approximately 7.00pm. At the end of official classes for the day many students will flock to the hall for the musical soiree. While viewing the fine art and design work of Visual Communication students, photography from the Studio Arts group and exquisite textiles from the Design and Technology department, the patrons will be entertained by the choirs, music ensembles and pianists. We look forward to showcasing the talent of girls who experience the value of the Arts in their lives.

Mrs Bronwyn Cottrell Head of Arts

In Science for Living this semester, we studied a broad range of topics including the science of food, cosmetics, travel and travel diseases. In the first term, we had Ms Jamieson, and in the second term Ms Petering. In prac sessions we made several products, such as lip gloss and perfume. Everyone really enjoyed the pracs in which we learnt valuable information and practised our lab skills. We made funny and scary iMovie advertisements for our perfumes. We learnt about the risks of travel from a scientific perspective.

For the last couple of lessons, we used laboratory equipment to make candles with ice and bath bombs, using the excellent knowledge of our Lab tech, Ms Newbold. Science for living has been a worthwhile and enjoyable subject for all of us!

lessons in the Music Studios; Rock Band in the Canteen Courtyard; Guitar and Ukulele ensembles in the Library; Piano

students playing in the hall while visitors enjoy the Student Art Show.

Wakakirri. OLSH College has entered the new Wakakirri competition for secondary schools in which participants are

encouraged to portray a story through a creative combination of dancing, singing and acting. We are delighted to offer

this opportunity to our students who will experience the exhilaration of creating a performance from scratch to realisation.

Rehearsals are in full swing and the public performance in September will be a celebration of the achievement of a

significant number of students and staff.

Our Performing Arts program continues to encourage students to explore their individual creative and artistic talents through participating in music, dance and drama activities and events.
