Dear Family and Friends of OLSH College Bentleigh,

Already we find ourselves at the end of the second week of term and fully active and alive in so many different pursuits. You will see some wonderful photos of ‘Hairspray’ our musical production taking place this week. In this second year of our partnership with De La Salle College Malvern it is indeed a great venture. The talents of so many from both schools is a tribute to students, staff and families.

As Anzac Day approaches we take time to remember our past. Anzac Day had its genesis in Brisbane in January 1916. It was proposed that April 25 be made a day of solemn commemoration, this was adopted by each of the other states, and became what we now know as Anzac Day

What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, but to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

Always united in our shared OLSH Spirit.

On Tuesday 19 April all the Year 8s went on our retreat at Lysterfield. It was a beautiful day which was great because we were able to sit outside and play on the fields. Father Martin taught us about the creation of the world. We had the opportunity to feed the sheep, colour in or draw our own mandalas and write our own poems. We talked about what made a good friend and the qualities of God and how they relate to our friendship qualities. Getting to write our poems was our favourite part of the day because we got to sit outside and enjoy the sun in peace. So overall the retreat day was really fun and we all learnt a lot and are very happy that we had the opportunity to go.

It is to support students and help them gain confidence with their Mathematics. Homework can be completed, help can be sought or students can work quietly on their own and get help when required. Sadly we report that sometime before dawn on Monday of this week, a number of items were stolen from the Convent building site. One of the items was the Convent Bell (pictured). This bell is a heritage item of our OLSH sisters given by the family of Sr Margaret McGuigan in the 1940s. It was the intention of the College to restore the bell as part of the Convent refurbishment and OLSH Centre building. An article was published in Thursday’s Herald Sun

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past and present. On 19 March, in 1911, International Women's Day (IWD) was celebrated for the first time in Europe. At that time more than one million people rallied for women's rights such as the right to work, to be educated, to vote, to be trained, to have an opinion and to hold public office. On Wednesday 8 March 2016 IWD was also celebrated in Melbourne. The ‘Alliance of Girls Schools Australasia International Women’s Day Breakfast’ was held at Queen’s Hall in Parliament House. Representing OLSH Bentleigh were nine Year 10 girls (Amorise Byers, Maddison Muller, Hannah Layzell, Lishna Dubarry, Bec O’Brien, Olivia May, Olivia Waterstone, Micaela Harvie and Kathleen O’Leary) and Ms Rayment. Eighteen other girls’ schools were in attendance for this exciting event, which was hosted by the State Shadow Minister for Women, Georgie Crozier. Ms Crozier spoke about the pride she felt in seeing the young women before her, who could one day be future leaders of Australia. The guest speaker at the breakfast was Imogen Randell. Imogen is the Managing Director of Quantum Market Research. She spoke about her experiences during the time of her working life in a male dominated business environment. Imogen discussed how women still struggle for equal rights, conditions and pay - and that the battle will still continue for some time to come.

All students left the breakfast feeling inspired. We, as young women must be proud of our gender and confident in our abilities as we stride towards the future where we deserve equal status and rights in society.

On 22 March, the Year 11s attended their social event of the year – their year level social. It was a great night and a huge success, on board the Victoria Star. It started off with everyone arriving at the Docklands at 6pm for photos. It was worth having photos as everyone dressed up for the occasion in their smart/casual attire. By 6:30pm, we boarded and headed off for a cruise along Port Phillip Bay to Williamstown, then back to St Kilda, Brighton, Elwood, and eventually back to the Docklands. Luckily the weather was great and there was a lovely sunset that could be seen from all parts of the boat. What added to it all was an absolutely clear night with a backdrop of the moon and stars! It was spectacular to see beautiful Melbourne lit up! The night was filled with great company and lots of laughs. Many girls bought a date, providing a great opportunity for everyone to socialise and meet new people. The boat provided a great environment for everyone to mingle and also a great background for many photos. The treats of pizzas, snacks and soft drinks upon arrival and throughout the evening added to the lovely evening. The DJ had us up dancing to the amazing choice of music. Overall the night was a great success with everyone coming off the boat after having a lot of fun. We would like to thank all the teachers that gave up their time to enjoy the evening with us. We are all very appreciative of the effort that was put in. We couldn't have asked for a better evening together!

With a change of venue and last minute preparations we held the OLSH College Athletics Carnival on Thursday 24 March. Thankfully the weather was in our favour and we enjoyed the mild conditions. A sea of colour started to fill Duncan McKinnon early with the Year 12s leading the way with their creative costumes. There were many outstanding results on both the track and in the field events. After a couple of practices the girls were in full voice for the House Chant competition which was won by Sweeney.

On Friday 15 April Jasmine Duncan, Brylee Nicholson, Hayley Efthymiadis and Beth Supple met at OLSH with Mrs Verrell at 6:30am for the Sports Leaders Breakfast at St Aloysius College in North Melbourne. We had the opportunity to interact with other Catholic schools and girls from all over Melbourne. We had a guest speaker, Bridget Barker (AFL Woman of the Year), from the Huddle, part of North Melbourne Football Club, who told us how she works with multi-cultural students. Bridget (pictured right with OLSH students at the breakfast) teaches them important life skills, literacy and numeracy skills and also coaches an all-girls football team. We thoroughly enjoyed the morning and we were left feeling inspired to help others around us and also feeling very full!

On Wednesday 15 April, the OLSH Junior, Intermediate and Senior Indoor Cricket teams travelled to Box Hill to compete in the SCSA Indoor Cricket competition. The tournament was tough but evenly matched, as the girls displayed great sportsmanship and perseverance throughout the day. Each game consisted of eight overs where the girls had to bat, bowl and field. Unfortunately all OLSH teams missed out on playing in the grand finals, with the senior team narrowly missing out by just 2% from the run percentage score. Overall, it was a great day where the girls learnt and developed their cricket skills as well as having fun! Thanks to the coaches for the necessary selection and training sessions which prepared the girls for a fantastic day of indoor cricket.
