Cover: Year 7 students are welcomed to their new school by a Year 12 guardof honour.

WelcomeAlthough I have been able to welcome

many of our parents to another school

year at the Information Evenings held

earlier this week, I would like to take this

opportunity to further extend a greeting

to all of the parents, students and staff

who together comprise the CBC Fremantle

community. I hope that 2017 unfolds as a

year of opportunity and achievement for

each of us. I would like to extend special

good wishes to all of those who are new to

our College and trust that your time spent

with us will be rewarding and enjoyable.

It was certainly interesting to watch the

reaction of our new Year 7 boys as they

were formally welcomed to our school

by the Year 12 students at a ceremony

on Wednesday morning of last week. The

mixture of excitement and anxiety was

plain for all to see as the Class of 2022

began their high school journey. Our

current senior students did a wonderful

job of assisting our newcomers to become

familiar with their surroundings, meet

their teachers and make new friends. I

have no doubt that in keeping with all of

those classes which have preceded them,

From the Principal

this group will write their own distinctive

chapter in the proud history of the school.

Also joining us at CBC this year are the

following new staff members:

• Mr Garry Bonney – HASS Teacher

• Ms Kerry Faichney – Head of English

• Mr Daniel Kennedy – Mathematics

Teacher

• Ms Chloe Lynn – RE Teacher

We welcome each of them to our

community and wish them a professionally

fulfilling and enjoyable association with

CBC Fremantle. We look forward to their

collective contributions to the progress of

the College in 2017 and beyond.

2016 Academic ResultsCongratulations to the members of

the Class of 2016 who performed

to a very high standard as anticipated

by their teachers. Their results are

consistent with recent trends and

further establish the reputation of

the College as an institution seeking

academic excellence. The requirements

for graduation in WA were made

significantly more rigorous from last

year and the College is delighted to

maintain its graduation rate at 100%.

In addition to this satisfying overall

performance, there were a number

of individual students who achieved

outstanding results.

Riley Faulds was the College Captain

last year and he achieved an ATAR

of 99.55. He also received a Subject

Exhibition for Religion and Life from the

state authority which recognises him as

the highest performing student in this

subject in Western Australia. Riley also

received Certificates of Excellence for

Biology and Religion. His classmates,

Conor Hars (99.10), Jack Bowater

(98.95) and Keane Bourke (98.20),

were also in the top 2% of students

nationwide. In total, six students

achieved an ATAR score over 95.

Overall, 15% of eligible CBC Fremantle

students achieved an ATAR in excess of

90 and 58% of this group achieved above

80. This is a tremendous acknowledgement

of the talent, work ethic and perseverance

displayed by these boys during their time

at the College.

Another measure of outstanding

achievement are the Certificates of

Merit and Distinction for students who

achieve at the elite level as measured by

their grades during their upper school

studies. These are determined and

awarded by the School Curriculum and

Standards Authority. In 2016 they were

obtained by 29 students from the College.

A very gratifying feature of our school

performance in 2016 was the continued

improvement in engagement and

achievement within Vocational

Education and Training (VET). Kennedy

Sorrell was publicly recognised as a

leading student and award winner in

VET. The overall results in this area

reflect the College’s emphasis upon

the equal valuing of each student’s

individual pathway whether it be ATAR

or non-ATAR.

The College is always proud of its graduates

and the Class of 2016 is no exception. All of

our high achieving students were publicly

recognised in front of parents and students

at an assembly this morning. The overall

performance provided by our leaving

class has served to further establish the

understanding that CBC Fremantle is a

College that values personal excellence

in all of its diverse representations. These

results are a credit to the diligence of the

students, the expertise of the staff and

the support of all families.

College Opening MassOur College Opening Mass to be held at

a wonderful event and it is expected

that all boys will be in attendance with

at least one of their parents. It is a great

opportunity for all members of our

community to come together to invoke

the intercession of the Holy Spirit in our

lives and in our work. When we gather in

such numbers, it is an impressive display

of our status as a faith community and

our common sense of purpose. I look

forward to seeing you at the College

for this occasion.

Please note that parking will be available

on Fremantle Park on Ellen Street on the

evening. In the case of inclement weather,

the College will notify of any change in the

evening’s arrangements by SMS and email

on the morning of the event.

Parent information eveningsIt has been very encouraging to see the

large number of parents in attendance at

the five Parent Information Evenings which

have been conducted during this week.

The role of parents as the prime educators

of their sons is always acknowledged

and emphasised at the College. We

recognise clearly our shared values and

understandings are fundamental to

achieving our mutual goal of assisting

in the development of tomorrow’s

gentlemen. Thank you to all of those

who attended on these nights and for

the many and varied ways in which you

continue to support the College.

Our remaining Information Evening is for

the parents of Year 7 boys and will be

held on Tuesday 21 February at 6.00pm

followed by wine and cheese at 7.15pm.

Letter to parentsAt the end of this Newsletter is a missive

from the Executive Director of Catholic

Education Western Australia (CEWA).

Please take the time to read this welcome

letter from Dr Tim McDonald.

Dear parents and caregivers Welcome to the start of the 2017 school year. This year promises to be full of exciting new opportunities and possibilities for your child in Catholic Education. If you are new to our system, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you and your family. I am delighted that you have chosen to join the Catholic Education Western Australia system, which provides a faith-based education and inspires a passion for learning and discovery for more than 75,000 students in 163 school communities right across the State. You are joining Catholic Education at an exciting time of system success, growth and transformation. In 2016, one of the many encouraging indicators of the success of our system was the WACE achievement of our Year 12s. Approximately 96 percent of CEWA students achieved a WACE, above the total State average, while CEWA students improved their Median ATAR again to 81.95, and were awarded a total of 3,178 VET Certificate 2 or higher. In the past four years, our system has grown with the opening of seven new schools and colleges. Early Years Learning and Care is a key focus for us moving forward in 2017 as we seek to offer exceptional learning experiences for children in a vital period of their development, while meeting the needs of today’s families. This year we aim to reimagine collaborative learning at every school across our system by implementing our digital transformation initiative, LEADing Lights. LEADing Lights is a single digital eco-system, designed to equip students with the 21st century technologies and deep learning skills that will best prepare them for the future. Much work is underway in this space to ensure that this initiative supports world-class learning and development experiences for both students and staff. Catholic schools rely on the contribution of parish, staff, students and parents working in partnership to sustain their vibrancy, educational excellence, and faith life. With your support and involvement in your child’s learning, the efforts of our dedicated staff and Principals, we will ensure that our Catholic schools help your child reach toward their God-given potential. Thank you for your continued support and I wish you all the best for the year ahead. Yours sincerely

Dr Tim McDonald Executive Director, Catholic Education Western Australia
