And the learning is intentional, purposeful and directed for each individual student. Your child in class will know what to do from the lesson goal and know how to do it with the support and guidance of their teacher. Why are they doing it? The curriculum has a whole set of skills and understandings for students at each year level and within each subject to learn. Practice is very important for skills. For example we need to practice reading, writing, listening and speaking. By doing these things many times each day we become more proficient, more able and we improve. Students’ understandings in each subject are supported by connecting and linking the new learning to prior learning. Students are asked to apply, analyse and evaluate their understandings in assessment. Learning and the framework for learning, has been led by Esther Weichert. Esther recently led a whole school curriculum day for teachers to spend a day writing curriculum plans and looking at assessment. This work will be ongoing into 2016. Laverton P-12 College is an exciting place to be for both students and staff. Parent support for our work is important and your encouragement of your child is much appreciated. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT EXCURSION TO BOWENS

On Wednesday 29th July our year 11 Business Management students visited Bowens (a large scale organisation) in Laverton North. Students had a tour of the company and got shown around the yard. They were shown all areas of operation and processes. They were explained the different key performance indicators being used to measure the productivity. The operations and processes at Bowens were very well organised. The working environment was very neat and the staff was very friendly. Students learned about the different career roles in Bowens and got an in depth insight into the running of this business. Experiences of some students: It was a privilege to visit Bowens and see how they operated. It was a great opportunity to learn and be shown how hard the employees work to be precise on their timing and the quality to be sent to their customers. Teri Brear Visiting Bowens was a good experience to visit an actual business and see how things worked. We learned many new things about running a business. Thanks to our teacher and the managers at Bowen for giving us this opportunity to get a good look at a business. Sam Souied & Goson Srilarak The tour to Bowens was very educational and gave students a visual understanding of how a lean organisation worked and how it conducted its operations. Our hosts explained everything very well and showed us around their working environment. They also gave us a lot of interesting facts about the business. Overall, it was great experience.

5/6 ZOO EXCURSION On Wednesday grade 5/6 went to the Melbourne Zoo. I went with Mrs. Ofeidu’s. I first saw the platypus. I learned about the platypus’s habitat. We took pictures and video on the iPads. After we found the hive spot then we ate our recess. Then we went to see why animals become extinct. We watched a clip about Orangutans and how Palm Oil affects their environment. Afterwards we went to the butterflies. A butterfly came on my hand. Then we walked around. We saw lions, penguins and then we ate lunch. Then we had to vote which animal we wanted to lend a helping our voice to. I chose the Orangutan. After that we went home. Hoda 5/6A On a freezing morning we split into groups to go on our excursion to the incredibly amazing Melbourne Zoo. We started off meeting some zoo keepers who explained the endangered animals to us. I found it interesting seeing the Sumatran Tigers pacing in their enclosure. The lions were really sleepy, the orang-utans were funny. I got to see an elephant. They were very peaceful. Ammar 5/6A We followed Mrs. Ofeidu to the first enclosure. We walked inside and it was pitch black. The tank was very long with loads of rocks and moss. But then we saw a little tail pop out of no where. Soon we could see its whole body. It was a platypus. The platypus moved from side to side and did little flips. Loretta 5/6A On the 12th August, 2015 years 5 and 6 gathered up their gear to go on an adventurous trip. The grade 5 and 6 community collaborated together as a team, making sure they were polite to each other and representing the school well. The grade 5/6’s arrived at the zoo safe and sound. When they got there they rested under the rotunda located at the entrance. After 5 minutes exactly they carried on with their

journey at the zoo. Their beautiful, kind and lovely teachers led them to two kind zoologists to guard us through the wild zoo. The 5/6’s of Laverton College saw heaps of animals including lions, tigers, African wild dogs and some other endangered species. Year 5/6 saw so much wildlife that some of us were exhausted and some of us wanted to keep going on the journey to save our wild and cute species. Junior 5/6A On Wednesday 5/6A went on a trip to the Melbourne Zoo. First we entered the music room so the teachers could tell us our groups. All the classes in 5/6 were going on the trip. What’s more, we had to be put into groups. We all headed outside the school gate so that we could catch the bus to the Melbourne Zoo. Inside the bus there was an abundance of chattering voices. There were only two or three quiet such as me and Rebecca. The road was also full of traffic and noise and almost every single human being in Victoria had a car on the road. When we arrived at the zoo we were a long way from school. The outside of the zoo was red bricked with an unholy side of disappointment. At the top of the bricks were thick electric wires. Then we walked inside. Before you got inside the zoo you had to check in with the man – or woman – in the desk. Since it was an excursion the teachers had already paid the money so we walked inside. We had walked for a couple of miles before I started wondering, ‘when are we going to see the animals?’ Before we even saw an animal we had to check in with the zoologist or the zoo keeper. She talked about all the animals we were going to see and learn about and how humans can adapt and help endangered species survive. Eloise Wilson – 5/6A

GRADE 5/6 DISCOVERY

This term in discovery our students have been hard at

work learning geographical skills like making maps.

They have been learning how to read maps and how to

create maps using mapping conventions and have

created some amazing pieces of work. It has been

amazing to see so many people striving to be

successful in all their learning tasks and thinking about

how the physical design of enclosures impacts on the

life of an animal.

The Lorax 2 – The Seed of Freedom Narrative Writing p – 4 Written by John-Murray Carroll – Year 4 “Ow!” shrieked Fred as he cut his leg on a jagged branch from a bush. Fred wasn’t paying much attention to anything because he kept on thinking about the seed he was given in the polluted, colourless and miserable wastelands. He scampered through the desolate world like a trapped mouse. Fred cared so much about nature. He tried to help, but it was no use. The plants were all dead. Fred finally managed to find a perfect spot to plant the seed when he heard a faint voice. “Who’s there?” Fred gulped as he scanned the deserted area for danger. Fred planted the seed and in a flash, someone stole it! “Show yourself!” exclaimed Fred as he

suddenly saw the man. He was invisible but his jacket gave away his position. “Hey! Give that back!” screamed Fred, but before Fred could run after the invisible man, the thief had already disappeared. A few hours later, as the invisible man lurked through his mysterious lair he sat down and declared, “I must break this peculiar seed because there is no need for thneeds. I’m afraid that if this seed grows and makes more trees then there’s going to be more factories and then more horrible, disgusting and hideous pollution.” The invisible man tried to burn the seed. He attempted again and again until he had an idea. He would dip the seed in toxic waste and that would turn the weird looking seed into, a massive monster. The invisible man put the seed, extra carefully into a glowing mixture. As quick as lightening, Fred snatched the seed of freedom from the toxic waste that would have turned the unique seed into a disgusting and disgraceful monster. Fred sprinted as fast as his legs could take him until he couldn’t go on and planted the seed in a place with rich soil. As he waited, he fell asleep. Suddenly, Fred awoke and stared with amazement. “It’s so beautiful.” Fred was gobsmacked. The world had transformed from a world of boredom to a world of joy and wonders. The vibrant colours of the land made a surge of joy rush through Fred’s body. The colourful world made the small creatures that looked like bears come back and play again. The humming fish swam in the new, fresh and clean water that sparkled in the sun. Then the Lorax descended from the sky and gave Fred a big bear hug.

P – 4 SCIENCE On the 13th August, the Grade 4 students were learning about the horizons of soil in Science. The horizons are the layers. For our experiment we used sweets that we got to eat thanks to our wonderful teacher, Mr. Renton. We needed to make and name the soil horizons using the lollies. Each group had to put the right labels in front of bowls of lollies. All we could use to help work out the labels was our prior knowledge and what we learnt from the video clip that we watched. The M&Ms represented the bedrock which is the bottom soil horizon. On top of the bedrock is the subsoil. For our subsoil we used chocolate pudding. Sitting on top of the subsoil is the topsoil. That was shown by crushed up cookies. The very top layer of soil is the residue. This is where dead leaves are found. After making our representation of the soil horizons, we had to look at it carefully. Then we answered 2 questions. One of the questions was “Why is soil important to the environment?”. We know that soil is

Laverton P-12 College Auction Night

I write this letter to ask for a Donation. Our School wants to hold an Auction Night to raise funds. These funds will be used to supply our Communities with some much needed Sale Shades to put over the existing Playground Equipment, so when summer comes the children are protected. We would very much appreciate any help you could provide, as our School is working hard in making some positive changes, for all the children of Laverton P-12 College to enjoy. We are hoping to hold the Auction in the next couple of months (October 2015). Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and we would greatly appreciate hearing from you in the near distance future. Kind Regards Kristie Chalker-Seymour Parents Club
