Today’s boys...tomorrow’s gentlemen
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 8 Term 1
From the PrincipalEducating BoysWhen I am speaking to parents who
are seeking to enrol their sons at our
College I am often told that one of
the attractions of our school is that it
provides a single gender education. My
assumption at these times is that parents
are acknowledging that boys and girls
often favour different learning styles
and that there is an expectation that the
offering at CBC Fremantle will be tailored
to suit our students. In a newsletter
some years ago I sought to discuss some
of the generally accepted principles of
boys’ education and the ways that CBC
Fremantle seeks to respond to the needs
of the young men in its care. I have edited
those thoughts and include them now for
your interest and consideration:
• The quality of relationships is critically important in the lives and education of boys.
For boys to become receptive to the
content of lessons it is essential that
the teacher has an interest in them
beyond their capabilities as a student.
Our young men need to feel that
their opinions and uniqueness will be
valued within any classroom at the
school. A popular adage used with
reference to boys’ education is that
boys learn teachers, not subjects. Our
extensive co-curricular and pastoral
care programmes are a response to
this understanding.
• Boys need to be challenged in all facets of their lives and must not be allowed to settle for mediocrity.

Those involved in boys’ education
know that they will often do as little
as you let them, and as much as you
make them. Many boys have a natural
inclination towards competition and
directing them to compete against
themselves in the pursuit of personal
excellence is a very effective strategy.
Continually ‘raising the bar’ in a
supportive environment should be a
characteristic of our College.
• Boys need to experience success. The diversity of the programmes that
we offer and the encouragement
that we give each student to become
involved in school life is an attempt
to ensure that the individual gifts and
talents of each boy are recognised
and developed. The diversity of the
curriculum and scaffolded learning
tasks also exist in recognition of the
fact that each boy’s personal best is
sought and that nothing is required
beyond this level of achievement. In
short, a boy’s best must always be
good enough for his teachers and his
parents.
• Boys need positive male role models in order to grow as learners and leaders.Boys are often presented with
distorted impressions of ‘maleness’
in popular culture where traits
associated with aggression,
dominance and insensitivity are
emphasised. The critical role of
fathers and other significant male
family members in correcting such
distortion is strongly supported by
the school. Our vertical pastoral care
structure introduces young men
to mentoring roles and provides
an insight to the power of positive
influence. The Rite Journey, Share
the Journey, Kairos and other
undertakings at the College also seek
to emphasise the importance of
positive male role modelling.
Educating boys for a life as good, selfless
young men is often challenging but is
simultaneously laden with great potential
reward. Our College remains committed
to assisting parents in this task.
ACC Swimming Carnival
Congratulations to our swimmers and
their coaches on their outstanding
achievements at the ACC ‘A’ Division
Swimming Carnival on Wednesday of this
week. Ably led by their coaches, Mr John
Rear, Mr Stephen Hunter and Mr Jason
Matthews and Captain of Swimming,
Solomon Wright, the team won the
Junior Boys, Senior Boys and Overall
Boys’ Shields. This is the eighth year in
“Educating boys for a life as good, selfless young men is often challenging but is simultaneously laden with great potential reward.”

succession that our swimming team has
won the Aggregate Boys’ trophy and
this unprecedented achievement is a
credit to their thorough preparation and
outstanding commitment. Their success
will be further recognised at a subsequent
College Assembly.
More specific details including individual
achievements are included in a link to
ACC Sport which can be found in the
Newsroom article.
Share the Journey
I look forward to joining many of our
boys and their dads at Point Walter on
Sunday, 6 April at 9.30am for the Share
the Journey programme. This innovative
programme is conducted by a group of
dads from the College and provides a
tremendous opportunity to enhance the
relationship between fathers and their
sons. If any boy’s father is not available
for any reason, another significant adult
male (family or friend) is very welcome to
attend in his place.
An important part of this programme is a
preparatory session which will be held in
the Arts Learning Area at the College on
Thursday, 3 April at 7.30pm. This session
is for dads or male mentors only. Further
details are available in this newsletter and
we eagerly anticipate another successful
College event.

“Fix the situations you think are
wrong,” was just a small part of advice
that John Worsfold shared with 16
CBC Fremantle Year 10 students at
the Halogen Foundation National
Young Leaders Day recently.
‘Woosha’ was one of many community
presenters at the annual event, ranging
from heads of government departments,
right down to the founder of a small
organisation dedicated to mental health
education.
The day began with an introduction from
the Executive Director of the Halogen
Foundation, Mike Martin, who suggested
that leadership is all about being the first
to act, and not waiting for others.
Learning to be leadersWe also heard from Commissioner Wayne
Gregson, head of the Department of Fire
and Emergency Services. He told us to not
take Australia for granted, as well pointing
out the very simple fact that all you need
to be a leader is followers.
Ashlee Harrison was the fourth speaker
on the agenda. Ashlee is the founder
and CEO of zero2hero, a not-for-profit
organisation which provides innovative
school-based programmes designed to
develop students’ understanding and
awareness of mental health services.
She spoke about the organisation as a
whole, what motivates her, and how we
too can be inspired when it comes to
something we believe in.
The final speaker was Patrick
Hollingworth, who, in 2010, reached
the summit of Mount Everest. He spoke
about how we only discover who we
really are when we move outside of our
comfort zones.
I think I speak for everyone who attended
the day when I say that we are came
back much better leaders within our
community.

MAWA caps teams at two per school and
it was a difficult task to select four boys
from each year group, given that many
other boys also wished to participate.
The next competition CBC will participate
in is the Australian Mathematics
Competition held in August later this year.
For this event we are able to enter as
many boys as possible, and we are certain
we will see the same level of enthusiasm.
Mr Barry Tognolini
Head of Mathematics
In March CBC entered two teams in the
State Schools Teams Tennis Competition.
Team 1 Ari Brierley
Alex Gray
Riley Rees-Turner
Henry Rogerson
Sam Sheridan
Team 2Jesse Davie
Finlay Martin

Ryan Watson
The two teams were placed into pools
and played against four other schools at
the State Tennis Centre for places in the
finals.
Herbert Edwards Cup TennisBoth teams won two matches and
narrowly missed out on advancing to the
semis. Ari was undefeated on the day in
singles in a tough pool.
Congratulations to all boys concerned
for their tireless efforts on a hot day that
started at 7.15am and finished at 3pm.

Vounteers needed for the Community Visitors Scheme
Parents and family members, have you got an hour a fortnight to spare? Would you like to change someone’s life with that time?
Are you in need of company? Why not reach out and make a new friend in a local aged care facility near you? I have lovely ladies
and gents looking for company. Have a free coffee when you catch up or go for a short walk.
The Community Visitors Scheme is an Australian Government initiative providing friendship with one-on-one interaction to
socially isolated residents of local aged care facilities. Volunteers visit people unable to get the social interaction they require,
providing them with an opportunity to talk and establish friendships. To help volunteers carry out their invaluable service, we
provide training, a support base and several social events throughout the year.
Please call Avril at Melville Cares to discuss this rewarding opportunity on 9319 0900 or email [email protected].
