One of the priorities for our College is that it remains a community which is distinguishable by its commitment to being inclusive. This aspiration is expressed through one of the four Touchstones which form the basis of the Charter for all Catholic schools in the Edmund Rice tradition. Our parent entity (EREA) expresses this imperative in the following way: ‘(CBC Fremantle must be) a community which is accepting and welcoming, fostering right relationships and committed to the common good.’

There are many ways in which we satisfy this criterion. Among them, we seek to ensure a pastoral care system and set of

practices which nurtures the dignity of each individual; we acknowledge parents as the primary educators of their children and seek ways to engage them at the College; and we recognise the cultural heritage of all Indigenous people and welcome them as part of our school.

One practice which has been a longstanding feature of our school and which does not always sit comfortably with the principle of being inclusive is the annual awarding of academic scholarships. As such, the College Board has endorsed a decision to cease offering these scholarships from next year. Against the backdrop of a commitment to inclusivity, it is difficult to justify giving financial assistance to a family simply because

they are fortunate enough to have a son who is academically gifted. We will continue to offer and extend our bursaries programme which provides opportunities to deserving students who would otherwise not be able to attend the College for financial reasons.

Our community is typified by the generosity of parents who happily understand that a small component of their annual fee payment is dedicated to assisting those at the school experiencing financial hardship. This standing in solidarity with those who are marginalised or disadvantaged is an essential cultural characteristic of our Catholic school.

CBC Family Mass

Among the many significant liturgies that occur at the College each year, the two Family Masses provide the opportunity for our community to come together on a voluntary basis to celebrate our common sense of purpose. The celebration of the Mass is at the heart of our existence as a faith community and provides impetus to the challenge we face daily to conduct our lives according to gospel values.

Our first Family Mass for this year will be held tomorrow, Saturday 28 May at 6.00pm, at St Patrick’s Basilica.

I warmly invite all families and friends of CBC to this liturgy. I’m sure that regular churchgoers will be granted an exemption from their usual parishes on this occasion. Those who are not Catholic or are infrequent churchgoers are also very welcome. As a College which prides itself on being inclusive, I would hope that everyone would experience the same sense of greeting and belonging at our mass.

Exams

All students at the College will be undertaking their Semester One exams in coming weeks. Our senior students in Years 11 and 12 will be first to commence next Monday and I trust that all of the boys have been engaged in a regular study programme. Those

Student Achievement

In an earlier newsletter this term I wrote about the significant achievement of Riley Faulds (Year 12) in being named the Lions Youth of the Year for WA. I also mentioned that he would be representing the state at the national finals in Echuca, Victoria in mid-May. I am delighted to report that Riley was successful at the national level and is now the Lions Australian Youth of the Year. Riley is a humble young man of outstanding character and this award is recognition of his diligence and many talents.

Student achievementsDebating in Round 3

CBC Fremantle students once again presented compelling and confident

arguments in the third round of the Western Australian Debating League

Schools Competition.

The Novice Year 7 team welcomed another keen member to their

team with Raphael McCrackan making his debating debut. Raphael,

Bronson Cirulis and Jamie Bailey put forward a very compelling case but

unfortunately lost to a well-polished opponent.

The Junior team, consisting of Daniel Page, Digby Marshall and Lachlan Legge, were convincing but ended up being narrowly defeated. Special

mention to Digby who presented the most compelling arguments with

great confidence and conviction.

The second Junior team achieved another win for the season. Joshua Jackson, Lawson Micale and Ashton Muir were unstoppable against

their opponent. The team argued that all elite private schools should

accept a minimum of 25% of their students from low socio-economic

backgrounds.

Sam Sheridan, Jacob Fitzpatrick and Ned Marshall in the Senior team

defeated Santa Maria College in their first impromptu debate. Ned

summarised the case very well, made necessary links and cemented

the win for the team.

Riley wins National award

CBC Fremantle College Captain Riley Faulds has won the

title of National Lions Youth of the Year in a competition

comprising more than 2,000 applicants.

CBC Fremantle has produced two winners of the Lions’

National award in three years, with Jordan Green winning

the title in 2014.

This is an outstanding achievement by Riley, who was

awarded an overseas trip to a destination of choice to

the value of $4,000 plus $1,000 spending money.

Congratulations to Roan O’Hehir (Year 7) who has been selected

to represent Western Australian

in the School Sports Australia 12

Everything from lunch containers to items of clothing end up in Student Services.

With the cooler weather, it has been noticed that a lot of student jumpers do not

have a name written on the inside tag. Please make sure your son’s property is

clearly labelled so Mrs Giancaspro and Mrs Gordon can attempt to reunite the

owner with his lost property.

Important notice from the Uniform Shop

Due to the problem with our supplier, we are unable to order tracksuit jackets

at the moment. As it may be August/September before they are available, if you

have any tracksuit jackets at home that are no longer required (particularly size

12 and 14 with the new logo) could you please consider dropping them in to the

Uniform Shop.

College Information

Edible engineering!The AEP Maths and Engineering boys meet every

alternate Tuesday afternoon to challenge themselves

mathematically and to explore the wide and diverse field

of engineering.

A project they are presently engaged with is the

investigation of towers with special emphasis on

their stability and height. The first afternoon in this

series was a challenge to build the tallest tower using

marshmallows and spaghetti.

Both these materials are very flexible and do not have

much inherent strength. Furthermore, the number of

marshmallows was a limited resource, although this was

mainly so that the marshmallows weren’t eaten before

the tower was completed to its maximum height!

The boys were very creative and discovered many

engineering truths about structure, tension, strength,

mass of materials and gravity.

As part of the Intercontinental Encounter of Youth, two CBC Fremantle students have been

selected to have an audience with Pope Francis to discuss issues including climate change,

war and terrorism and how to work towards peace from a global perspective.

This year’s Lightning Carnivals were a huge success and it was fantastic to see every student

from Year 7 through to Year 9 actively represent the College and have fun with their mates in

the relaxed sporting environment.

CBC Fremantle College Captain Riley Faulds has won the National Lions Youth of the Year

award out of more than 2,000 applicants.

Year 10 Italian students enjoyed a fun afternoon visiting neighbouring school, Santa Maria College, practising their language skills outside of class time and increasing their passion and knowledge for the language they are learning.

The afternoon began with past students sharing why they chose to study a language in Years 11 and 12, including the benefits of study tours and exchange programmes. After an enjoyable afternoon tea, boys and girls used their Italian language skills in a “getting to know you” activity with simple questions and a quiz.

The visit allowed students to increase their language skills with other students outside of class time while having some fun and making new friends.

“Rather than just revising in the classroom, we had the opportunity to put our Italian knowledge into practice by introducing ourselves and talking to the Santa Maria Italian class in a more casual way. I definitely recommend it because it presents a great learning opportunity outside of school that’s different from everyday classes.” Kaleb Milsom, Year 10

Italian excursion helps language skills

Celebrating Fremantle Heritage Week the photograph above shows CBC’s original school building on High Street circa 1887-1897.

The College traces its roots back to 1882 when the Fremantle Catholic Boys’ School was first opened in High Street in the hall that

is now Blessed Edmund Chapel. A former Fenian convict, an architect by profession, drew up the plans for the school and it was

built from stone quarried on site. When the doors opened, 30 primary aged boys attended under the management of Mr Otto De

Grancy. A change in the colony’s Education Act in 1895 meant that all financial support for church based schools was withdrawn.

The recently arrived religious order of Christian Brothers was invited to take charge of the Parish School and to establish a High

School for the education of boys in Fremantle.
