Aboriginal Reconciliation
The establishment and maintenance
of a strong culture and set of beliefs is
essential to the effective functioning
of a good school. At CBC Fremantle
we seek fairness and equity for each
member of our community and the
promotion of these same qualities in
wider society. Mr Burgio wrote very
eloquently about equity in the last
newsletter and I hope this is a principle
which is clearly understood and embraced
by everyone who is part of this College.
As it applies to our commitment to
reconciling with the first people of this
land, it is an imperative borne out of
our authenticity as a Catholic school
and as an educational institution
committed to justice in our nation.
Some readers may remember a speech
delivered in 1992 in the Sydney inner-
city suburb of Redfern by the Australian
Prime Minister of the time, Paul Keating.
Occurring shortly after the Mabo decision
in the High Court and the establishment of
the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation,
this speech was a turning point in how
Australia recognised and acknowledged
its history. It called for an understanding
that this country had a record of human
occupancy and culture which extended
back for 50,000 years and not the 200
which had commonly been the focus
of teaching and understanding to that
point. It also paved the way for the formal
apology to Indigenous Australians for past
government practices, which was delivered
by Kevin Rudd some 15 years later.
From the Principal
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 9 Term 2 | Page 3
Most importantly, Mr Keating encouraged
all non-Indigenous Australians to
consider the question of justice from
the perspective of our Indigenous
brothers and sisters. He said:
It might help us if we non-Aboriginal
Australians imagined ourselves
dispossessed of land we had lived on
for 50,000 years - and then imagined
ourselves told that it had never been
ours. Imagine if ours was the oldest
culture in the world and we were told
that it was worthless. Imagine if we
had resisted this settlement, suffered
and died in the defence of our land, and
then were told in history books that we
had given up without a fight. Imagine if
non-Aboriginal Australians had served
their country in peace and war and were
then ignored in history books. Imagine if
our feats on sporting fields had inspired
admiration and patriotism and yet did
nothing to diminish prejudice. Imagine
if our spiritual life was denied and
ridiculed. Imagine if we had suffered the
injustice and then were blamed for it.
Although spoken nearly 24 years
ago, this invitation to reflection
seems equally pertinent today.
At CBC Fremantle we seek to be a
community which is inclusive and in
which all members are reconciled with
each other. Everyone is welcome to be
a part of our school and, within this
environment, our boys are taught that
difference is something to be respected
and celebrated. Unfortunately, this is not
always evident in our broader society
which comprises those who are supportive
of attempts at reconciliation, sceptics
and those afflicted with apathy. Many
people lack the will or the confidence to
believe that meaningful reconciliation
with the original inhabitants of this land
is achievable. I thank you as always for
the support you offer in each of your
homes in advocating a contrary view.
It is hoped that the modelling which is
provided by our school community and
in your homes may offer inspiration
and suggest possibilities for society in
general. It is further hoped that the
individual and specific experiences of our
boys while at school will inspire them
to be positive agents for change. This is
critical work in ensuring that our College
fully embraces and reflects the EREA
touchstone of Justice and Solidarity.

Please make sure all student items are clearly labelled
Everything from lunch containers to items of clothing end up in Student
Services. With the cooler weather, it has been noticed that a lot of student
jumpers do not have a name written on the inside tag. Please make sure
your son’s property is clearly labelled so Mrs Giancaspro and Mrs Gordon can
attempt to reunite the owner with his lost property.
Uniform Shop Opening Hours
The Uniform Shop will be closed during the holidays and will resume for normal
business when school returns in Term 3.

ReflectionsGrieving God,
In your Son you experienced the agony
of the pointless, savage, and premature
end of life:
Look with mercy on those who have lost
loved ones in Orlando.
Restore the confidence of any
who fear they can never relax
or enjoy themselves again.
Calm the anxiety of all whose identity
makes them the ready target
of hatred and violence;
and hasten a world where all are
celebrated for who they are
as your children,
where difference is a sign of
your diverse abundance,
and where there is no use for guns;
through your wounded yet risen and
ascended Son.
Live Jesus in our hearts.
Forever,
Amen.
