Faith and Mission

Once again we are extremely appreciative of the hamper donations collected for our St Vincent de Paul conference here in Highett. We thank all the teachers, girls and parents who contributed to the hampers. Our workload in helping the disadvantaged and needy people is increasing year by year and without your assistance it would have been extremely hard to give the families and single people we care for a gift, food and food vouchers to help them cope with the extra expense during the festive season. We also congratulate you on the beautiful Mass we attended – the presentation, singing and manner in which the girls participated was truly a credit all involved.

Yours sincerely Yvonne Octigan

We pray for the repose of the souls of:

Peggy Lois Jacobs, Grandmother of Eliza White, Year 10

Tas Synanidis, Father of Diamanda Synanidis, Year 10

May Our Lady of the Sacred Heart hold them gently in her care and may their souls rest in peace.

All parents will receive an email with instructions for logging into Parent Teacher Online (PTO) on Monday 29 February at 5.00pm.

PTO is the online booking system used by the College for parents to make appointments with teachers.

PTO will open for bookings on Tuesday 1 March at 5.00pm and close at 5.00pm on Tuesday 8 March.

Please remember that parents can also book a meeting with a teacher any time by contacting the College and requesting an appointment.

Parent Teacher Student Interviews for Years 7 to 9 will be on Wednesday 27 April.

Interim reports are posted home at the end of Term 1 and Term 3. The purpose of each OLSH Interim Report is to provide a summary of the progress your daughter has made during the first part of each semester. It covers the following areas:

Interest and engagement in each subject;

Ability to work independently and make the best use of learning opprtunities, and

Organisational Skills : completing work and meeting deadlines.

Each subject teacher for Years 7 – 9 will also indicate on this one page report whether they require an interview for further discussion. All parents are, of course, welcome to make appointments with their daughter/s subject teachers at all Parent Teacher Student Interview sessions throughout the year.

Detailed Semester Reports are available at the end of Term 2 and Term 4.

Ms Lynn Egan Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching

The Maths Hub tutorial program will be held weekly, after school on a Monday, in the Library from 3.30pm - 4.30pm. Maths Hub is open to all students at OLSH. It is to support students and help students gain confidence with their Mathematics. Homework can be completed, help can be sought or students can work quietly on their own and get help when required. Teachers and peer tutors will be available to support students. Students will be required to sign in and out for attendance records as these will be used for College Colours.

Student leaders have been busy working on Lenten activities for this term. Parents and students are reminded that all funds raised will be divided amongst CARITAS and Matantubig. Matantubig is in the Philippines where the OLSH Sisters work to assist those in need, in particular children that are malnourished. The OLSH Sisters run a feeding and tutorial program for these children.

At OLSH we have always had a strong tradition of “touching the hearts of others” through our Lenten activities. Let’s make this year the best year.

Make Giving Feel Good Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton offer three ways to help people feel good about giving. They outline in their article that when prosocial spending is done right—when it feels like a choice, when it connects us with others, and when it makes a clear impact—even small gifts can have a big effect on happiness, potentially spurring a domino effect of generosity.

Parents and students are reminded that whole school events are compulsory for all students. It is an expectation that all students will be in attendance. These events include but are not limited to Camps, Retreats, House Carnivals, Feast Days etc. These events help to build community and College spirit and are integral to who we are.

The Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 11 March - absence on this day will require a medical certificate.

All students must present at the Carnival with a hat and their own sunscreen.

A reminder to parents that immunisations for students in Year 7 will take place on Tuesday 22 March.

Mr Josh Debrecini I completed my Bachelor of Music Performance in Violin/Viola from the Elder Conservatorium of Music in South Australia in 2007, and then decided to complete a Graduate Diploma in Education in 2011. Prior to moving to Melbourne in early 2015, I have had the opportunity to teach music in various schools in Adelaide including Fremont Elizabeth City High School and Tyndale Christian School. Prior to my time at OLSH, I worked at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School as both a Classroom and Instrumental music teacher. Outside of OLSH life, I enjoy travel, experimenting with food from different cultures and have a love for basketball. In my role as Performing Arts Coordinator, it is my joy to be able to teach Year 7, Issoudun, Year 10 and Unit 1 and 2 Music this year. Watching students develop in their skill, confidence, capacity and knowledge is always inspiring to me as a teacher and I very much look forward to a brilliant year ahead with all the girls, staff and OLSH community.

Ms Yvonne David This year I feel very privileged and excited to teach Visual Art to both Year 7 and Year 8 students at OLSH. In addition, I am teaching Issoudun Photography and VCE Art at Year 11. I am a very passionate and enthusiastic Visual Art teacher and I have recently come from Huntingtower School in Mount Waverley. My interests outside school are drawing, painting, visiting exhibitions and exercising. My dream has always been to teach at an all girls’ school and I feel very fortunate that I have been given this opportunity to teach at such a great school as OLSH.

It was an amazing camp and a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends!!! Dani Russell When we arrived I could see the light green lake, with water sparkling. I could smell the eucalyptus trees blowing through the soft wind; I could hear birds sitting up in the trees cheeping away; I was thinking about how beautiful the wild life was and how lucky we were to be here. Stephanie Matters Year 7 camp at Lake Dewar was incredible. There were so many activities that I had never done before like stand up paddle boarding or adventure tunnelling. Megan Edgley

On camp we had eight amazing groups and eight awesome activities. Some of the activities were kick-biking, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking & jetty jumping. Nicolette Ballas Camp was amazing! The activities were so much fun! My personal favourite was probably adventure tunnelling. It was a great way to get everyone to use teamwork. Nicola Benvenuto

Everyone loved camp because the activities were well organised, the food was delicious and everyone was included. Thank you for an awesome camp OLSH and Lake Dewar YMCA. Katie Gillespie Whilst on camp we had the homeroom talent quest. Each homeroom had to act, sing or dance or all even do all three. Every class did an amazing job but 7 gold won and 7 white came second. Maria Blassis I had the best time at camp. We did so much over the three days including flying fox, kick bike, kayaking, geocaching, raft making and much more. The cabins were lovely and big and the food was really nice. Brigitte Bartosy

As part of our participation in the 2015 Woolworths Earn and Learn Program the College purchased two complete LittleBits kits, a fantastic fun technology resource to be used across the school. “LittleBits are easy-to-use electronic building blocks that empower students to both understand and reinvent their world. Along the way, they engage in powerful hands-on learning in STEM/STEAM and gain 21st-century skills and mindset.” We have initial plans to use the kits in our Ignite and Extension programs - however expect to see them in classrooms soon! See more here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZAFzRmAsCM Your support in this initiative is very much appreciated.

SESG Sport (after school competition) is played on Tuesdays (Years 9 and 10) and Wednesdays (Years 7 and 8) in Terms 2, 3 and 4. Students have the opportunity to try out for SESG Volleyball, Badminton, Indoor Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Tennis and Softball teams. Terms 2 and 3 are played at Oakleigh Recreation Centre. All sporting trials and training times are advertised on Ametur.

The beautiful Eastern Gardens in Geelong was a hive of activity early on Tuesday morning, buzzing with triathletes preparing to swim, ride and run for their school. Seventeen OLSH students, who had been training over the summer and down at Brighton beach during Term 1, pushed themselves to complete the course admirably. As triathlon competition was a new experience for most of the team, we were very happy with overall fifth place. Congratulations to Chloe Gorman (Year 7) who was fiercely competitive in the Junior division and received a medal for eighth place. Thanks to Micaela Harvie, who assisted by expertly counting laps, and to parents, Karen Gorman, David Gorman and Sean Lynch, who shared their expertise and helped prepare the team so well. Karen’s experience on the day was invaluable. A great team effort!
