Year 7 Retreat was a valuable learning experience and a lot of fun. We spent the day in the Theatrette where we learnt about Jesus, his love for us and our school pillars. We had the opportunity to meet Sister Philo and to go to Hodgson’s Reserve for lunch. That was our favourite part. Overall the day was a lot of fun and we learnt about ourselves and others across the globe. Victoria Charleston and Isabelle Foscolos

Year 7 Retreat was a fun day in which we learnt more about ourselves and others. As a group we learnt about the OLSH spirit, which involves loving God, trying your best in everything we do, taking the time to learn more about others. I found it very interesting that there are others all around the world who are part of The Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart who put so much time and effort in to helping others in need. Grace Jemetta

The Year 7 Retreat was a great day to spend time with the rest of the year level. I had an amazing experience and I really liked how we reflected on the school year. My favourite part was Hodgson’s Reserve for lunch because it was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the fresh air. Overall I had an amazing time and would love to do it again. Tadiwanashe Kahonde

During the Retreat I enjoyed doing activities with my friends and hanging out with them too. I particularly enjoyed going down to park and having lunch with the other Year 7s. Isabella Stewart

I enjoyed Year 7 Retreat because it allowed me to spend time with my original friends and make new friends at the same time. It was a great experience and I enjoyed it a lot. Piper Zielinski

Year 7 Retreat was a great day where everyone could try fun activities with new people. It was a calming, peaceful time. Jezlyn Scott

What I loved about the Year 7 Retreat was going to the park and hanging out with other girls from different classes. I learnt a lot more about them and I enjoyed all the competitions (because my team won a lot of them!) The Retreat Day was great and I hope I get to do something like it again. Molly May

I enjoyed the Year 7 Retreat because it was a great way to interact with other girls in Year 10 and 7 and all of the teachers. Leah Gannan

Year 7 Retreat was a perfect opportunity to find new friends and become closer to old friends. I enjoyed all the fun activities such as dance offs and going to Hodgson’s Reserve. Overall I had a wonderful time. Ava Righetti

On Tuesday 8 September, the Year 8s went to the Lysterfield Retreat Centre.

At the start of the day we were introduced to Father Martin who was the Centre’s Director, and his beautiful dogs who shared the day with us. We split into three groups and rotated activities. The activities included learning about different ways of communication and how we respond to the natural world.

We created a colourful mandala and Sister Megan spoke about the creation story. We also had a chance to experience the beautiful nature of the farm and the animals. I think everyone enjoyed the llama and the newborn lamb. We concluded the day with a liturgy in which we re-enacted the creation story.

The day was very enjoyable and it was good to reflect and spend time as a year level developing relationships with one another. It was also fun to spend time in a different environment.

Web Preferences, the online subject selection system, will remain open for all Year 8 students until 4.30pm Monday 19 October.

Year 8 students were briefed about the 2016 subject selection process on Friday 9 October. It is important for the girls to remember that there are limited places in all elective subjects and while they might not get all of their choices for next year, they should get the majority of them.

It was explained that once a subject is deemed as full, it will no longer be visible online. If a student changes their selection throughout the process, some subjects will once again become visible and available for other students to select.

Within the next week, 2016 VCE students will receive their confirmation of subjects.

If any further subject counselling is required, this will be indicated on the confirmation slip and these students will be notified of possible meeting times. Following the confirmation of VCE subjects for all students entering Year 11 and 12 next year, the same process will occur for all Year 10, 2016 students.

If any students have concerns or queries regarding their 2016 subjects, they are encouraged to email [email protected].

Ms Dina Oro Assistant Principal Student Wellbeing

Seven Issoudun students attended the Youth Challenge Program and OLSH College were one of eight schools invited. The students were divided into eight groups comprising a student from each of the schools attending. Their challenge was to create and present a role play that showed their interpretation and understanding of ‘The Spirit of ANZAC’. The RSL are keen for youth to be able to perpetuate the spirit that is ANZAC, especially as a century on from the Gallipoli Landings, the diggers are no longer with us. Current serving members from the Australian Defence Forces and veterans told their individual stories and helped to facilitate the day.

Congratulations to Aisling Atkins, Olivia Waterstone, Hannah Layzell, Julia Daye, Angela Velluto, Rabeca Harare and to Georgia Sheppard, far right, receiving her Best Speaker award in her group's role play. Mrs Linda Naylor Issoudun Coordinator

Ten Year 8 students and ten Issoudun students were invited to the Melbourne Writers’ Festival – Schools’ Program. We attended sessions featuring Jane Caro, Jack Andraka and a provocative presentation of some famous World War 1 poetry.

Jane Caro, author of Just a Girl and Just a Queen - Tales of Queen Elizabeth I, spoke about her as an inspiring woman and the process of writing historical fiction. We agreed that the time spent listening and discussing the lives of royal women during the 16th century, and how they coped with adolescence and standing up for being a girl, very interesting.

The highlight of the day was the session with Jack Andraka, the boy genius who invented a test to detect pancreatic cancer at the young age of 15. Jack kindly gave up his time in America to come and speak to us Melbournians. During our time with Jack we got to hear his life story, including the struggles he faced growing up and the process of his invention. Jack shared his recently released autobiography called Breakthrough, which is available at your nearest Dymocks for the price of $24.99. A memorable experience for us was getting the chance to actually meet Jack and get some photos with him (below).

The drama of battle was wonderfully presented in the recitations of World War 1 poetry. The drama was intensified with visual film footage that accompanied the poems. The session closed with some singing of songs from the era and a somewhat ribald ditty.

70 students in Year 10 chose to do Work Experience this year. Work Experience is an excellent opportunity for students to try out a possible career option before actually having to make a decision on pathway options. Students who do work experience almost always find it a worthwhile experience.

This year we had students do many and varied placements including: Victoria Police, The Supreme Court, Moorabbin Justice Centre, Veterinary clinics, childcare, kinders and primary schools, South Pacific Health Club St Kilda, hospitals, physiotherapy centres, hairdressers, City of Kingston, Academy of Design, Worksafe Victoria, lawyers and solicitors, Arena Theatre Company, Echelon Productions, VIVE Group, The Just Group, MMM radio station, Kingston Library, Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance, Southern Football League, Cricket Victoria, Sportsgirl, Stamford Plaza, MSAC, Gene Technology Access Centre, architectural design companies, real estate companies, animal shelters, a pharmacist ad an equine group.

Work experience positions can also be valuable when it comes to completing Year 12 and applying for universities and TAFEs as these institutions now like to know more about students who are applying for their courses. Year 12 students when applying can let these institutions know about the work experience and community services that they have completed. It is no longer just about the ATAR score.

Current Issoudun students will be introduced to the work experience program for 2016 this week.

Hairspray, the second co-production between OLSH and De La Salle Colleges, scheduled for performance in April 2016, is officially up and running. The audition process, completed in the busy closing weeks of Term 3, was stimulating and engaging. As a director looking to cast appropriate actors, singers and dancers into key roles, it was a very difficult job as the two schools are blessed with an array of motivated, talented and capable students. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated so enthusiastically and generously in the audition process.

We began rehearsals with a two-day introductory workshop in the recent term break. Choreographers Gina Coetzee (OLSH) and Olivia Wenczel (DLS) made a serious dent in a couple of the show’s big numbers and the actors completed a detailed reading of the script. Rehearsals will continue throughout Term 4 and Term 1 2016. The rehearsal structure will operate as follows:

Singing for leads and ensemble is on Tuesday afternoons, Acting and Choreography will take place on Thursdays. In weeks 1, 3, 5 7, 9 rehearsals will be at OLSH. In weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 rehearsals will be at De La Salle. In week 10, which is the first week of holidays, two longer rehearsals will be conducted at OLSH on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 December from 9.30 am – 2.30 pm. Musicians will rehearse with Ms. Frost at De La Salle on Thursday afternoons. In the event of unforeseen circumstances where other events at either College impinge on the availability of rehearsal spaces, some adjustment may be necessary. We will however, be endeavouring to stick to these arrangements as rigorously as possible.

Rehearsals will conclude on time at 6.00pm. It is hoped that students will then be able to immediately make their way home. Parents picking up students at either college are asked to arrive punctually at 6.00pm to collect students. In the weeks when rehearsals are at De La Salle, OLSH students will be bussed over at 3.20pm but will need to be collected by parents.

The OLSH/De La Salle production of Hairspray will be performed at the National Theatre, St Kilda from Monday 18 April through to Saturday 23 April, with evening performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, plus a Saturday matinee. Bookings will be via the National Theatre Website and will open in Term 1 2016; more details to follow later in the term.

I would like to stress an important point in relation to commitment and attendance at rehearsals. Involvement in a musical production is a serious, time consuming commitment. The rewards in terms of skills and personal development are immense, nevertheless, they do not come without application and hard work. Attendance at rehearsals is obligatory. Frequent no-shows at rehearsals or last minute cancellations are not acceptable as they compromise the rehearsal process and inconvenience the work put in by both cast members and staff. The agreement on participation has been clearly spelt out in the contract. I would ask all involved to do their best to honour that agreement.

Thank you for your support. No doubt there will be problems to solve along the way, this is part and parcel of a theatrical production. However, with the amount of talent and enthusiasm with which we are setting out, this will be a great and memorable journey.

Mr Bryan Smith Hairspray Director 2015/16
