The 2010 College Year Book is now in circulation. It provides a colourful and informative record of last year s major College events, along with class photographs and snapshots of everyday activities from across the College. Thank you and congratulations to Mrs. Kath McGargill who did a magnificent job in compiling the material and who prepared everything for the printers. In so doing, she demonstrated a remarkable range of graphic skills, considerable patience, and an extraordinary attention to detail. The Year Book is a splendid record of College life. In the presence of many invited guests, parents, staff and students, the new College hall, The Marian Centre , was officially opened and blessed last Friday morning, in a very simple but dignified ceremony. Mr. Warren Snowdon MHR, Member for Lingiari, represented the Australian Federal Government and opened the building. He spoke about his own education in Catholic schools and how he valued the tremendous support that parents give to Catholic schools. With the assistance of College Captains, Dean Ryan and Rebecca Crack, Mr. Snowdon unveiled a special plaque to acknowledge the occasion. Retiring Alice Springs Parish Priest, Fr Jim Knight, blessed the building, and a new statue, that was commissioned for the Opening. The assembly was delighted with the singing of the Bath Street and Traeger choirs led by Mrs. Jennifer Guzman and Ms. Kellie List. The children sang with plenty of enthusiasm and were clearly pleased to make their contributions to this memorable event. During the ceremony, the excellent work of Architect, Mr. Steve Adler, and the construction team from AsBuild Pty Ltd, led by Mr. Paul Graham, besides the expertise of numerous contractors, were suitably acknowledged. Despite the vagaries of the weather, over the past eighteen months, all the people associated with the project kept to the task and as a consequence, the College now has a magnificent multi-purpose hall that should be a great venue for all sorts of positive activities. Over recent days, our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 have taken part in the National Testing programme that encompasses a wide range of skills in literacy and numeracy. There will be a catch-up day tomorrow for those students who may have missed one or more of the tests. Thank you to the staff members who have supervised these tests. Reflection

Our senior musicians returned yesterday from the Generations in Jazz festival that was held in Mount Gambier. It was a wonderful experience for all the participants and hopefully we will see the fruits of this excursion at the Sadadeen Open House next Thursday, 19th May, and then later in the year at the College Concert (25th and 26th August). Our thanks go to Mrs. Nikki Quesnel and Mr. Patrick Johnson who accompanied the students.

Thank you to the parents and family members who joined the Bath Street campus students and staff at their monthly Mass in the parish Church, last Monday morning. The Mass focused on the theme of Mother s Day , and the mothers in attendance were presented with a small souvenir for the occasion. Fr Nicholas encouraged the children to always respect their mothers, to pray for them, and to make them proud of them. No one could disagree with that positive advice!

Tomorrow, our Year 3 and 4 students will take part in the annual Athletics carnival at Head Street. This promises to be an active and fun-filled day for all the participants. If any parents are able to assist with judging events, please contact Mr. Sam Typuszak.

Best wishes

Br Paul Gilchrist Principal

Lord, You place deep in our hearts the love of Mary, Help of Christians. Through her prayers grant wisdom to our leaders and integrity to our citizens. Under her protection may Australia be granted harmony, justice and peace.

O God, powerful and gentle, You love this southern land and all its peoples, old and new. As the Cross shines in our heavens so may Christ bring light to our nation. As the waves circle our shores so may your mercy enfold us all.

We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen

Campus News: Bath St The crisp three degrees that we woke to yesterday is a bit of a giveaway that the seasons are changing. Please remember that any jackets or jumpers worn to school need to be school uniform and not just anything. These items must be labelled clearly, as they are quickly discarded, and often forgotten, once the mercury begins it s climb.

It s an exciting week for us at Bath St, as on Friday, the Year Three and Four children have their Sport Day and the Transition to Year Two students will see a performance in the Hall. Our Mass on Monday went very smoothly (even in my absence!). Thank you to Mrs Marshall and Ms Curwen-Walker for their organisation and to Miss Nertney for operating the projector.

The NAPLAN tests are continuing as I write and should be over by the time this Newsletter reaches home. I was very pleased, as I walked around the various classrooms, to see the children doing their best with the test and abiding by the test rules.

Liturgically, we are heading into the Fourth Sunday of Easter. The Gospel Acclamation this week gives us a good summary of the Gospel passage (John 10:1-10); I am the good shepherd, says the Lord; I know my sheep and mine know me .

Our thoughts and prayers are with Miss Dieckmann and her family at this time and we pray for her speedy recovery.

Notes have gone home in relation to our Year Three and Four Sport Day and Families in Friendship. Please ensure that you have seen these and responded accordingly.

Book Fair. It s that time again!!

Due to the success of last year s Book Fair, we are going to have two Book Fairs this year

one in May [16th to 20th] and one later on in the year. These play a big part in raising funds to buy new resources for the library. Last year we raised $2,000 and were able to purchase many new books, games and activities for the Library.

The books for this year s Book Fair are now on display in the Library and the students are busy writing out their wish lists . There are over 200 different items to choose from, including the very popular Variety Box filled with novelty erasers and pens, so there should be something to interest students of all ages.

Next week the Book Fair sales begin. We will be open from 8am until 4pm.

Every purchaser will have a chance to win $60 worth of goodies

on display in the Library.

Looking forward to seeing you all at Bath St Library next week.

SENIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

YEARS 9-12 HEAD STREET OVAL, 8.10AM

2.30PM, FRIDAY 20TH MAY 2011 Next Friday, 20th May, our annual Athletics Carnival for Sadadeen students will be held at Head St Oval. Students need to make their own way to Head St Oval by 8:10am and students will be dismissed from Head St Oval at 2.30pm. The Athletics Carnival is an important part of our college life and spirit. It is an expectation that all Year 9-12 students are in attendance. Students who are either unable to attend or do not attend will need to provide an acceptable reason for their absence in the form of a written letter from their parents or guardians. Students who do not supply this will receive a Friday afternoon detention.

Students are required to wear school sports uniform but are encouraged to wear a t-shirt in their house colour, or dress in the house theme. Students will need to bring their own food for lunch, however the Year 11 Remar group will be running a fundraiser BBQ on the day, so it would be great if you could support them.

It promises to be a warm day so students are asked to bring plenty of food, water, a hat and sunscreen. As there will be so many students down at the oval, students are asked not be bring valuables such as i-pods and mobile phones.

Last but by no means least, parents and guardians are most welcome to join us at the grounds and we look forward to seeing as many as possible. If you have any questions regarding the carnival or would like to help out, then please give the school a call on 8950 7399.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Augustin & Mary McPhee Sadadeen Physical Education Department
