From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove Family,

“Do you fish?” A question I’ve been asked on several occasions. My answer is “I play golf.” I’ve always been amazed how people can sit with a line in the water…… and nothing happens! I’ve always had a theory …when you play bad golf you have plenty of hits, when fishing is bad the result is obvious.

On the May holiday Monday we went to the cinema and saw “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.” As Joseph McAleer of the Catholic News Service writes, the movie “covers a lot of ground…or should that be water?....ranging from romance and diplomacy to world peace and the ins and outs of fly fishing.” In the movie, Sheikh Muhammed of Yemen, a passionate salmon fisherman dreams of creating a fishing spot in his own country. He enlists the support of a British salmon fishing expert and a consultant who try to make the Sheikh’s dream a reality. The Sheikh believes the project will provide hope for his people.

The not-so-convinced British fisheries expert changes his mind about the project becoming a success after a conversation with the Sheikh. The Sheikh describes fishing as a metaphor for faith. Patience, tolerance and humility are all virtues necessary for fishing, something that strikes a chord with Dr Jones, the British fisheries expert. As the Sheikh states, “In the end you are rewarded for your faith and constancy…with a fish.”

Our faith can sometimes be a test of our patience and tolerance because our, “I want it all and I want it now” attitude doesn’t always fit in with God’s time.

When St Marcellin encouraged his early Brothers, he wanted them to be like the violets that grow in southern central France in the summer, in amongst the grass. Not on top, but in amongst the grass… the Brothers in amongst the people. Exhibiting virtues of what the three violets stand for - simplicity, modesty and humility, very similar to the virtues of salmon fishing.

So it’s all about being positive, good people, something for which we can all aim. Let’s all aim to be people of patience, tolerance and humility in the coming weeks.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlin

Headmaster’s NotesInSTALLATIon oF ARChbIShoP MARk CoLeRIDgeCongratulations and welcome to Archbishop Mark on behalf of all members of the Marist College Ashgrove family. Archbishop Mark has been a wonderful supporter of Marist College Canberra and we look forward to welcoming him to Ashgrove in the very near future.

MoTheRS’ DAYMy sincere best wishes to all mothers for Mothers’ Day this coming Sunday. I hope you are all suitably spoilt. In the Catholic Church the month of May is a month of special devotion to Mary, Our Good Mother. This month of May - this month of Mary – let’s remind ourselves and our students to take on the spirit of Mary of the Angelus; the Mary who heard because she was attentive; the Mary who said yes to the God who called to her; the Mary in whom God became incarnate; the Mary who was filled with joy and hope through this and who set out in haste to share the news that God is here. As Marists we are called to be this Mary.

MoTheR – Son MASSPlease be aware that the date of the Mother – Son Mass has been changed to May 17 at 7.00pm in the Chapel. My apologies to all as I will be away on our boarding visit to Longreach.

boARDIng VISITSMany thanks to our parents past, present and future who met with us on May 3 & 4 in Millmerran and Goondiwindi. Special thanks to Mr Butt, Ms Kavanagh, Ms Gavranich and the boys in Big Band One and the Chamber Choir who performed brilliantly at the Goondiwindi Show. Thanks also to Mr Rob Corboy, Mrs Kim Taylor and Mrs Michelle Roberts who joined me on the trip. Next week we visit Emerald, Clermont and Longreach.

CongRATuLATIonS• Mrs Kinga Schmidt on the wonderful article written about her in the Catholic Leader on May 6.• The Volleyball Australia: Queensland Elite Development Program (QEDP), a partnership between

Volleyball Australia and the Queensland Academy of Sport, is part of the Volleyball Australia’s High Performance Pathway and has been established to provide a high performance daily training environment for young athletes based in South-East Queensland. Congratulations to Adam Morris who has been selected into the QEDP.

PRAYeRS PLeASePlease pray for the repose of the soul of:

• Wally Diezmann who was P and F President 1969/70. He was very active with the College for a long time.

• Ray, the brother in law of Ben Maddox who passed away on Sunday night after a brave battle with Motor Neurone disease.

• Please pray for the repose of the soul of Jack Nelson, the father of Damian Nelson who passed away early this morning after a short illness. Jack was 95 years of age and an Old Boy of St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill.

Eternal rest grant to them and may perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

• Please also pray for Tim Kenny who was a staff member at Ashgrove until 2010. Tim is currently on the staff at St Teresa’a Catholic College Noosaville. He has been diagnosed with a “superbug” and was very ill with pneumonia when admitted to Nambour Hospital last week.

bRookFIeLD ShoWThe guinea pig competition will be bigger and better at the 2012 Brookfield Show on 18-20 May. MARIST CoLLege AShgRoVe | Parent Seminar - Raising bright Sparks When: Tuesday 15th May 2012Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pmWhere: Cyprian Pavilion - Marist College Ashgrove, 142 Frasers Road, Ashgrove Cost: $5 per person to be donated to John Berne College Lewisham Sydney – supporting adolescent boys and girls who can no longer fit into mainstream educationRSVP: by Monday 14 May to Alana Armitage, Head of Professional Learning, Marist College Ashgrove on email: [email protected] or ph: 07 3858 4574 Parenting “bright sparks” can be extremely challenging. As parents, we need to know how we can:

• Identify a child’s strengths and nurture talents • Understand a child’s abilities and meet their needs • Promote achievement while ensuring children are healthy, happy and confident • Support children to manage stressors and become resilient when they encounter difficulties • Guide children through the delicate balance of fitting in and standing out

Abilities, temperament, thinking, behaviour, provisions, opportunities and friendship patterns interact to influence students’ choices, motivation and achievement. Parents with an understanding of the dynamic of talent development and their child’s social and emotional needs are best able to support, guide and nurture “bright sparks”.

P&F NewsSPoRTS CAnTeenAt our last AIC home game we started a coffee shop just outside the Cyprian. This was run by Paula McLoughlin and her daughter-in-law Jess who are both baristas and was extremely successful even though we didn’t have a great deal of time to advertise. I would also like to thank Gary Keown and Peter McLoughlin who arrived very early in the morning to set up the coffee machine, the “Hospitality Boys” who will cook home-made biscuits for each game, and to Rob Corboy who helped us with the clean-up. The coffee shop will be open every AIC home game – we hope you will support this new endeavour.

Thank you very much to these parents who have helped at the Flats and McMahon Oval canteens over the past few weeks:

WALkAThonWe are still seeking volunteers for the Walkathon and would appreciate your assistance on the day. Many parents are needed as “safety officers” throughout the course, and to assist with the canteens. You can enrol as a parent helper via the link on the College homepage or by emailing Adele & Alan at [email protected]

This year we are starting later than usual due to the shorter route we have planned. Parents volunteering as safety officers on the course will need to be at the school by 7.15 am as we need to ferry people into the Barracks via bus and this will take some time. Parking will not be available inside the College grounds. The gates on both Frasers Rd and Moola Rd will be closed from 7.45 am. After this time there will be no access to the school as buses will be ferrying parents into the Army Barracks and the boys will be leaving to complete the walkathon. Throughout the day refreshments will be available for parent volunteers in the Cyprian Pavilion. Traditionally the Year 5 parents donate biscuits, sandwiches, cakes & slices for the volunteers. These will be available throughout the day along with tea & coffee. Please make sure you drop by as there are usually some real treats. We would like to also extend a special invitation to all parents who are new to the College - this is a great chance to meet some of your son’s mates and other parents!

AMITY CoMMITTee AnD The WALkAThonVolunteers are needed to assist in the Cyprian Pavilion on the day of the Walkathon. Two shifts will operate- from 7.30- 9am or 10-11.30. This work involves preparing platters and serving the food kindly donated by the Year 5 parents for our volunteers. If you are able to assist please email Karen on [email protected]

boARDeRS’ SuPPoRT Rugby and football season is well and truly underway. Please keep in mind that if you have any boarders in your son’s teams, any assistance with transporting these boys to the many venues would be greatly appreciated by the College. Please contact Rob Corboy if you are able to help at [email protected].

Thank you to the wonderful group of mothers who volunteered to help our boarders make Mother’s Day cards. We had a fabulous evening last Wednesday helping the boys, and I am sure their mothers would have been suitably impressed with their creative efforts. In fact Martha Stewart would have been proud!!

ChAnge oF DATePlease note a change of date for our first Night on the Green of the year for the Senior boys. The new date is June 2nd. If there are any parents who would be available to help with setting up and supervising this event, please email me at [email protected].

No special skills are required, we just need parent numbers to help with lighting candles, serving noodle boxes and drinks and generally being present to ensure the boys and their guests enjoy a night of entertainment under the stars.

Thank you to those who have already offered their time, events such as this are not possible without your generosity.

Afternoon teas have continued this Term with an amazing volume and variety of food being provided for the boarders. Thank you one and all.

heLP neeDeDDo you know of anyone who would be interested in volunteering an hour or two of their time per week to assist our international and indigenous boarders with some tutoring? We have a large number of boys who are in need of a little extra help between the hours of 6.30 – 8.30pm, once or twice a week.Whilst this may be a difficult time of the evening for parents of school age children, there may be some Old Boys or even grandparents who have knowledge and time to offer. Any help would be greatly appreciated and I would love to hear from anyone who is able to offer their support.Michelle Carmody - P&F Boarders’ Support

We hope that you will consider assisting in the sports canteens and at the Walkathon. Term Two events provide our main opportunities to raise money and to be involved in College life, and it is the only term in which the P&F requests parental help on a “major scale”. No tasks are too onerous, you will be warmly welcomed and volunteering at these events is a great way to meet other parents.

have a good fortnight,Deb Moloney

Forensic Science Camp 2012If your son is in Year 9 and loves ‘who-dunnit’ mysteries, then you should read on. Each year, during the June/July holidays, students from Australia and New Zealand gather at The Armidale School to investigate the evidence left at the crime scene and to accuse one of the suspects of …….. murder! This involves all of the usual forensic tests – fingerprinting, blood typing, time line analysis, witness interrogation anything that will assist in uncovering the truth. Once this is done, the students take the roles of lawyers, witnesses and the accused in the court case to convict or acquit.

This is a wonderful experience. Many students from MCA have participated over the years and I have never heard one who did not enjoy the camp. Students work in teams to examine the evidence and discuss

the investigations to ensure that no stone is left uncovered. The facilitators are campers from the previous year, so they relate very well with the new investigators.

It’s a great experience, it’s challenging and it’s fun. Further information is available at www.forensics.as.edu.au. Students need to send an application which includes a letter of support from a teacher. I’m happy to provide this, as is Mr Rick Morrow (Head of KLA Science). I would encourage any Year 9 student to consider this opportunity.

Ms Majella StevensTeacher, gifted education Program

TouRnAMenT oF MInDS (TOM) is a problem solving program for teams of students.

Teams are made up of 5 to 7 members and must be from a range of Year levels. Our Junior School teams bring together students from Years 5, 6 & 7. The Secondary teams consist of students in Years 8, 9 & 10. The teams are blends of experience and trainee, artists and mathematicians, designers and managers, thinkers and doers. We are very lucky at MCA to have amazingly generous teachers and senior students who are prepared to give of their time to facilitate our teams. We have nominated eight teams – four Junior and four Senior teams. In each of these two divisions there are four categories – Applied Technology, Language & Literature, Maths/Engineering and Social Sciences.

WHO SHOULD DO TOM? Anyone who enjoys thinking outside the box, writing stories, designing costumes and sets, working with others, working with technology (computers, movies etc.) and having fun!The program runs for six weeks, from Monday 16th July to Saturday 25th August. All teams from our region gather on that day to present their solutions to the challenge. It’s an exciting and very entertaining experience for all. Some teams will progress from the Regionals to the State Finals. If you think that TOM could be for your son, then please contact me by email – [email protected] .

RSVP: by Monday 14 May to Alana Armitage, head of Professional Learning, Marist College Ashgrove on email: [email protected] or ph: 07 3858 4574

Parenting “bright sparks” can be extremely challenging. As parents, we need to know how we can:

Identify a child’s strengths and nurture talents Understand a child’s abilities and meet their needs Promote achievement while ensuring children are healthy, happy and confident Support children to manage stressors and become resilient when they encounter

difficulties Guide children through the delicate balance of fitting in and standing out

Presenter Michele Juratowitch Director Clearing Skies

Michele Juratowitch draws on research and her many years’ experience working with children, parents and teachers in schools and private practice to explore the challenges involved in raising “bright sparks”. Michele is Director of Clearing Skies, providing a range of services to support high-ability children, their families and schools. Michele was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study the counselling and intervention needs of gifted children, adolescents and families

eVATT TRoPhY CoMPeTITIon - SéAMuS CouLSon, YeAR 10The Model United Nations Club, made up of politically aware boys of Marist College and girls of Mt St Michaels recently held a local heat of the “Evatt Trophy Competition”. The Evatt Trophy Competition, named after Dr H.V. Evatt, is Australia's largest secondary schools' debating competition. Students competed in teams of two, representing a country on the UN Security Council in a UN style debate. Students amend resolutions, debate, vote, pass notes and engage in one on one discussion. Students voice their country’s opinion in the negotiation room and try to sway the opinions of other nations. Alliances and rivalries are formed all within a matter of hours. UN youth officials attended the event to judge the students on their performance. Students were judged on their influence over other countries as well as their ability to think and speak on the spot. Diplomatic skills, persuasive thinking and logical compromise by all the students led to excellent debate and intelligent solutions to the topics being discussed.

Students from both schools learnt about current issues in the world around them while having the chance to showcase their knowledge and speaking skills. The Model United Nations Club holds multiple events throughout the term, competitive and non-competitive, that give any willing student a chance to partake and enjoy the experience of representing a country and debating world issues while meeting like-minded students from both Marist and Mt St Michaels. The Model United Nations Club will be holding a non-competitive event later this term giving students – old hands and first timers, the opportunity to have an enjoyable afternoon of lively and informal debate and discussion as well as a pizza dinner and time to socialise with students from both schools.

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2012

FROM THE ARCHIVESHello to you all again. This piece of scribbling will be the second concerning the association of Peter “Spanner” Spensley with Marist College Ashgrove. The last edition dealt with Peter as a student of the College from 1964 to 1970, then his return to it as a Science teacher after 1975, and his subsequent career as first a Year Master and afterwards a House Master of superb pastoral and administrative abilities. Peter’s contribution to the Ashgrove community, however, has extended into many and varied areas beyond the classroom or the office…..

Peter has always had a liking for the great outdoors, first as a member of the Scouting movement, and later in the Ashgrove Cadet Unit, so it naturally followed that when the opportunity arose for outdoor education at the College, he was an enthusiastic volunteer. He found, however, that the way the program was organized clashed with the Spensley concept of what it could be and should be. By now the College had acquired a property at Dayboro, north of Brisbane, for outdoor education, but Peter felt it was not being utilized to anywhere near its full potential. “For a start,” he says, “ a whole Year level would go on camp together, with only a couple of teachers: too many students and not enough supervision. If we were going to make it a meaningful experience, we needed far fewer students and more teachers, and to have activities that would genuinely challenge and extend the students.” The Spensley problem-solving radar swung into action, so that by 1981, Headmaster Brother Alman Dwyer in the Blue & Gold for that year was thanking Mr Peter Spensley for planning “…..this excellent camp….four groups each of 40 (Year 9) boys spent three days away at Dayboro; it offered activities in group initiative tasks, ropes confidence courses, cross country runs, cooking, health and hygiene, abseiling, canoeing, orienteering, bush navigation and outdoor survival.” The “Spanner” had struck, and in typical fashion !!! In the early years the Year 9 Camp became a real family affair, with Denise attending and assisting Peter and his teachers; later with the arrival of his three children after 1986, Peter felt he no longer had the personal time to attend, so with typical thoroughness he outsourced the camp to a professional outfit at Meebun-Bia, south of Brisbane. (Having personally attended some of these camps, I can testify that they were challenging, for the teachers if not for the boys. Dave Cameron doesn’t like climbing a ladder, so standing in the miniscule fork of a gum tree and preparing to abseil 150 dizzying feet down wasn’t exactly my thing….. nor was I alone in my trepidation: Mr Tony Byrne of Ephrem House reportedly issued a despairing and diminishing falsetto shriek as he sped across a valley on an impossibly long flying fox, “This is just not MMMEEEEEEEEEEEE !!!”). In 1992, Peter assumed responsibility for planning the entire Year 8, 9 and 10 camp activities and laid the basis for what has been followed ever since: so Peter was really the founder of the outdoor education programme as it is presently known at the College. Others would help him, and others would follow as leaders in their own right, but again it was Peter who had been the Pathfinder.

Another particular fascination for Peter has been the utilization of technology: he loves new inventions, and enjoys tinkering with them, exploring their possibilities and their applications. (Peter has perhaps been fortunate in the period in which he has lived, for never has technology had such an impact on mankind and human society as in the 20th and 21st centuries, and never has knowledge expanded at anything like the rate it now does – if ever there was a time to be fascinated by gadgets, this is it !) This would have direct ramifications for the curriculum at Marist College Ashgrove, for one of the technological inventions that captured the “Spanner’s” attention was of course the computer. He and other visionaries

Page 19: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2012

FROM THE ARCHIVESon the staff such as Richard Ward , Brother John Joyce, and Brother Kevin Ryan saw the possibilities of the computer in the educational sphere, and set about instituting courses in its use at the College. The first computing work programmes at MCA were the direct result of the efforts of these pioneers, and the first step to elevating the computer to the main tool of education that it has become. Peter concentrated on computer programming, and actually wrote the software which for the first time allowed subject selections for Year 10 to be processed by computer. He also enjoyed tinkering with computers in the hardware sense, and in fact anything in the audio-visual area was fair game for the ubiquitous imagination of “Spanner,” which would again be of great benefit to the College over the years to come……

You may remember from the first article on Peter that he was the child of English parents who had migrated to Australia after World War Two. Both parents were devotees of live drama performances, and subsequently joined the Brisbane Arts Theatre – so a hankering after the spotlights was on both sides of Peter’s bloodline. Except that in Peter’s case, he took after his father, who excelled at not on-stage but back-stage preparations: Peter didn’t want to be in the spotlights, he wanted to aim them. Helping here also was the background of Physics, Peter’s main subject, which provided him with the theoretical knowledge about what might be possible. Yet another factor operating was that his mentor at the College, Brother Alexis Turton, loved both Physics and Technology, and was himself a dab hand at practical tasks and inventions, involving Peter in much of this work. All this coalesced into the “Spanner” who helped install and maintain the College’s intercom system, provided sound and light at drama productions, P & F reviews, student musicals, Rock Eisteddfods, Mrs Grant’s fashion parades, Inaugural Masses, Year 12 graduation ceremonies, Blue & Gold Balls, Sports Lunches, and more. Anything that involves AV carries Peter’s imprint, and it is all done with the bewildering efficiency that is so customary with him. I was a guest at the 2012 Sports Lunch at the Brisbane Convention Centre, and the audio and visual effects that accompanied the various speakers or entertainers were absolutely faultless. I met Peter after the lunch and congratulated him on how well everything had gone. He modestly waved at his “Tech Crew”, all either present students or Old Boys, and said: “Oh, they did it all; I just supervise in the background….”. Indeed. As an advisor and mentor, the boys could not have a better one, and it is no accident that Peter Spensley trained “tech crew” have gone on to fully professional employment with Brisbane television channels. Peter himself is often asked to “help out” by one particular channel, a measure of how highly regarded his work is. Within the College itself, Peter from July 2005 has rejoiced in the title of Coordinator of Technical Production at MCA, which is a bit of a mouthful, but it adequately sums up just how important his work is to Ashgrove: think audio-visual, in fact, at MCA, and you think “Spanner.”

Enough of a contribution, you would think, from one man, but we haven’t yet considered Peter’s involvement with sport at MCA. He has been an age group coordinator and manager for cricket, and did the same thing for soccer. He was also for many years a successful coach in Track and Field, but it was in Basketball that his greatest contribution was to be made. In another pioneering effort, Peter basically helped establish Basketball as a TAS competition sport, and was either coach or manager of the Firsts Basketball team from 1975 to 1992. Peter was also the Convenor of the Committee which set in motion the Inaugural Australian Marist Basketball Carnival, held in the Champagnat Centre at MCA in March

Page 20: Marist College Ashgrove Newsletter

Marist College Ashgrove | College Newsletter 2012

FROM THE ARCHIVES1990. The Committee organized billets for visiting players, transport, scoring, referees, catering, the official dinner, typing and printing of programmes, and the accommodation of visiting staff. It was an enormous success, and marked the start of a Basketball tradition that has endured ever since. So yet again, we find “Spanner” in the role of trail-blazer, only this time in sport. Peter’s main contribution to sport now lies in the AV area, when he provides the visual backdrop in the Cyprian Pavilion on the occasions we host sporting opposition in “home” games of Rugby and Football. (And just as an aside, Peter must have become bored in the 21st Century, because he took on the task of editing the Blue & Gold school magazine from 2004 to 2008 !!!)

It remains only to tell a couple of “Spanner” stories. One of my favourites concerns Peter discovering an unused 35mm projector in the boarding school, and deciding that it would be ideal to use to show classes educational films in Room 106, providing that the room could be suitably blacked out. The Headmaster of the time was all in favour, but baulked at the expense of buying dark curtains: “Spanner” solved the problem in typical fashion, so determined was he that his beloved AV would triumph. He proceeded to a hardware store, procured the necessary materials at his own expense, and then painted the windows in 106 black…..

Graham Lawson recalls having Peter as manager of both cricket and soccer teams that “The Torso” was coaching. “It was incredible,” recalls Graham. “The Spanner just couldn’t live without his technology. He wrote computer software, and after a game all I had to do was put in the scores and next moment a plethora of information was spat back out at me; averages per ball, average per over, average per game, for batting and bowling; the number of singles, twos, threes, fours and sixes and other; catches caught and dropped; run outs; wicketkeeper’s byes, caught out, stumped, catches; run outs by whom and when; decisions turned down and upheld. He did the same for soccer; shots at goal per player; goals saved; average goals per game; per player and per half. Need I go on? He was an amazing figures man.”

But let the last word go to one of the students involved in a winter camping adventure organised by Peter. This entailed the participants swimming across freezing cold creeks clad only in shorts or togs. One student soon announced to all and sundry that the area they had just passed through should be known as Spanner Gorge: when asked why (and exactly what he said can’t be revealed) he intimated that parts of his anatomy had indeed felt a distinct tightening.........

And there we must leave Peter. As a record of service to the College, his career would have few parallels, if any. In so many areas he has been a pioneer and an innovator, a tireless worker, and a valued colleague. He dismisses what he has achieved with his customary dry and self-deprecating humour, but it is a mighty record of which he can be justly proud. And it is not yet finished – I’m willing to bet that there will be plenty more “Spanner” stories to tell in the years to come..........

Until next time,From the Archives Dave Cameron 38584591 or [email protected]

MenTAL heALTh FIRST AID SeMInAR

The Rotary Clubs of Ashgrove/The Gap and Mitchelton are hosting a Mental Health First Aid course over two days from 9.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June in North West Brisbane.

The 12 hour, two-day course is designed to help individuals who think they may be developing a mental health problem, or who find themselves in a mental health crisis.

Family members and other associates also will discover an increased understanding of the complications that mental health problems can cause in personal relationships.

Mental health problems affect more than 20 per cent of Australia's adult population at some stage of their lives and between 10-15 per cent of young people in any one year.

Mental illness is a disease just like any other illness and many people recover spontaneously, while others will receive treatment, with the majority recovering fully. However, a small number will experience longer periods of distress and disability.

The course is sponsored by Australian Rotary Health and the Australian Government, with a charge of $30 to cover the cost of the manual.

Information flyers are available from Ted Latta, 3300 1020 ([email protected]) who will take bookings for the course.

Attendance is limited to 20 persons and booking is essential.

Further Information after 13 May also from:John Lane, 33004425, or 0411 042 900, email: [email protected]

Junior School NewsDear Parents and Boys,At the beginning of May, which is an important time of Reflection for all of us, as we contemplate the role of Mary in our lives, I am sharing with you a Reflection from Sister Patricia Noone, who is an American Sister of Charity. It was written in the early 80’s and, at that time, caused some controversy. I have always kept my copy as I believe it places Mary, very firmly, with us – a human person, a mother and a wife, trying to live a good life and having very similar challenges that we have.

Who was Mary of nazareth?

She was a real person, a woman of her time, with a heart and a way of feeling deeply; with a mind and a way of knowing; with inner resources of memory, imagination and dream with courage to hear the new and act upon it, to make decisions about her life and relationships, to change her mind when it seemed right, to collaborate with a partner, and to stand loneliness when she had to, to keep on going when all seemed lost within her heart and without. If, someday, in a way unforeseen by us now, it could be proved to the Christian community that she did not choose perpetual virginity for her way of life, it could not change the impression of integrity, purpose and faith which leads us to call this woman ‘one-in-herself’.

Many years later, at the start of the new century, Brother Sean Sammon, also an American and the former Superior General of the Marist Brothers, wrote the following Reflection on Mary and shares many of the same thoughts as Sister Patricia Noone.

“Mary’s life was a genuine human journey. hers was a commonplace and obscure life. Deny this fact and you will be unfair to her and to all of us. This Jewish woman of faith observed the Sabbath and the practices associated with the fervour of the poor of Yahweh, among whom she numbered. Like the vast majority of her contemporaries, she probably was illiterate. She searches, feltanxious, laughed and cried and struggled, like we all do, on life’s journey. And life did not treat her gently. She lived out the human lot that falls to each of us.”

As I mentioned to you in the last Newsletter, the boys are reciting the daily Angelus in class. Take this opportunity of speaking with your son/s about this new addition to their day. On the glass window, outside Year 7 Red, Mr Rynders has written the words of the Angelus and I have been pleasantly surprised at seeing quite a few boys stopping and reading the words as they pass by. Our boys are open to spirituality. The Marist Spirituality, in particular, speaks to them as it’s a Spirituality founded on a relationship which a young French priest formed with a group of young men, in 1817. From this initial life giving encounter, sprung the Little Brothers of Mary, which has the person of Mary as its inspiration.

C.I.C. RUGBY & SOCCER The football season has started in earnest with some outstanding and exciting games being played by many Ashgrove teams over the past couple of weeks. Both the Rugby and Soccer players have performed admirably and everything looks bright for an enjoyable season. To ensure the football season remains hassle free for everyone, I would like to highlight to parents a few important reminders:

• Coaches need to be informed if players will be missing at training or at the game. Contact details are on the College website.

• As outlined in the College diary, commitment to school football takes priority over Club football or going away for the weekend.

• Players must wear full appropriate College football uniform whilst playing C.I.C. games.• Each player needs his own clearly named water bottle for all C.I.C. matches. • Weekly Results can be found on the College website.• A season draw has been completed and is on the Junior School sports noticeboard for viewing and

the College website. This will give you an indication of when games will be occurring for each team throughout the season. It is important that each match is checked in the week leading up to the game as there may be last minute changes to some fixtures. Please ensure you check the games time and location each week on the College web-site or by checking the email I send out on a weekly basis.

CRoSS-CounTRYThe C.I.C. Cross-Country season is in full swing with the Junior Squad training hard. At this stage of the season, we have been extremely happy with the level of interest from our runners and their application to training is exceptional. With the CIC Championships occurring on June 1 the intensity at training is increasing and it’s been pleasing to see our aspiring Cross-Country runners meet the challenges they have been confronted with.

The selection of the CIC Team - Seven boys from each age group will be selected to represent Ashgrove at the CIC Championships. These boys will be selected on their attendance at training and their performances at the lead up carnivals prior to the CIC Championships. The boys selected in the CIC Cross-Country Squad will represent the College at the CIC Cross-Country Carnival on June 1.

InDIVIDuAL AChIeVeMenTSCongratulations to James Dupont (5 Green) and Samson Skinner (7 Gold) who were selected in the Queensland Futsal teams for their respective age groups. Both boys will compete at the National Futsal Championships held in Sydney in January next year. This is a marvellous achievement and both boys should be extremely proud of their achievements. To represent the state of Queensland is a wonderful honour!

MARIST JunIoR SIngLeS TennIS ChAMPIonShIPSThis past Sunday we held the Marist Junior Singles Tennis Championships with 46 players involved in the tournament.

After heavy rain the day before, the skies cleared enough to get on court for the tournament. The tournament was run as a knock-out draw with a plate draw for the first round losers. All matches were played first to 4 games to allow enough time to get though all the matches – 66 matches in total for the day.

After 4 and half hours of play the final of the plate draw saw Will Gray and Ned Petrie play off against each other with Ned winning the final 4 – 2. Congratulations to both of you and to Ned Petrie for winning the Plate Draw!

The finals of the Main Draw saw Will Miller play against Harrison Cusack in which Harrison won 4 -2 in the end.
