Anzac Day march and assembly: As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter students are invited to participate in the Mortlake Anzac Day march next Monday. All students are welcome regardless of their age and in fact having our young primary age chil- dren marching alongside our senior students is one of the things that makes our participation in this important event so memorable. Students must wear full school uniform, including school jackets if owned, and are asked to assemble at the Post Office at 9:45am for a 10:00am start. Our school captains, Bree Cummins and Jake Tanner will be laying a wreath at the memorial on behalf of the school community. On Friday we will be holding a special Anzac assembly commencing at 9am in the undercover area. Members of the Mortlake branch of the RSL will be in attendance and President, Merv Hampson will be addressing the assembly along with one of our students, Oliver Martin, who will be talking about what Anzac Day means to him. School bus travel Last week I received reports of misbehaviour on one of our school buses. The misbehaviour was serious and involved among other things undoing seatbelts, shouting out and not remaining in seats. These actions clearly are a safety concern and are very distracting to the driver who relies on students behaving themselves whilst driving. I have spoken to the students on this bus and explained to them the importance of appropriate behav- iour. I also explained that individual students can be banned from using a school bus for misbehaviour that might endanger the safety of travellers. Graeme Good

TOP ARTS EXCURSION

a really great day! Annette Janes Last Tuesday VCE Art and D&T students, a group of Year 8-10 Art students and Andrew Bennett and I travelled to Melbourne to view the TOP ARTS and TOP DESIGNS exhibitions. The TOP ARTS pack-age, at the Ian Potter Gallery in Federation Square, included a talk by Ingrid, from the Gallery Education staff. This was in a tiny, amphitheatre with a huge screen and was for just the Mortlake group, which made it more personal. It was followed by a viewing of students’ Visual Diaries upstairs, providing inval-uable insight into idea development process and addressing the assessment criteria. We then viewed the actual exhibition, composed of a selection of A grade works from VCE Art students of 2015. Voted most impressive and favourite artwork by our group, was a tonally rendered self-portrait consisting of a giant piece of bubblewrap, into which the student had used syringes to inject the colours into ten thou-sand bubbles! The front was “a manual recreation of a neatly-conceived digital identity, compartmental-ised, meticulous and pixelated”, whereas the back (you could view both sides), where the paint had been dripped and smudged, was messy and reflected an imperfect image. The student explained (from the Catalogue commentary): I wanted to convey the differences between the subject as she portrays herself on social media, and the messier portrait gleaned through everyday interactions.” http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/startup-top-arts-2016/

Students had free time to go and have some lunch and then head up to the Museum to view the TOP DESIGNS exhibition. During this time Bree and I went to the Andy Warhol / Ai Wei Wei exhibition at the National Gallery, as we are studying these two artists. It was a truly amazing exhibition! Fabulous to see Warhol originals, and the work of Ai Wei Wei who is a Chinese contemporary artist, intellectual, social commentator, human rights advocate, and has been ‘detained’ himself by Chinese authorities for ‘subversive’ ideology. His artworks range across a huge range of mediums and methods - porcelain, jade, wood, assemblage, painting, printing, photography, assemblage, and Lego blocks to name a few. One room in the exhibition was entirely made from Lego (including the floor with a plastic protector layer on top)! The walls contained images and commentaries – all in Lego) of Australian social and environ-mental issues. We had to tear ourselves away as it was all so thought-provoking, and we were, sadly, out of time.

At the Museum we viewed projects and the developmental ideas in the visual diaries of work including: Media, Food and Technology, Product Design and Technology, Systems Engineering, VCE Interactive Digital Media, and Visual Communication Design. It is an excellent opportunity for students to view first hand some of the top works from across the State, and to enlarge their understanding of the scope and depth of work in these subjects. The students were fabulous and the feedback from the experience has all been positive. Thanks Andrew for your excellent bus –driving!
