If one has to draw up a list of pedes-trian unfriendly localities in the vast Mogappair neighbourhood, then the

Sixth Main Road in Mogappair Eri Scheme must figure in it. For it is obstruc-tion all the way for pedestrians for a good distance on the road.

At many places on the Sixth Main Road in Mogappair Eri Scheme, huge concrete slabs that covered the storm water drains and served as a pedes-trian pathway have been broken or laid haphazardly. The problem is acute on the side of the road near

Mullai Flats and Rose Flats that are located opposite the Navy Flats. It is

not just broken or displaced concrete slabs but one can also find some concrete structure abutting the road and the pedes-trian path that clearly pose a major hurdle for pedestrians.

Local people including residents in the surroundings of the Sixth Main Road in Mogappair Eri Scheme say that their de-mands to relay the footpath or repair the concrete slabs and lay them in an orderly manner have fallen on deaf ears – though they do not recall if any proper memoran-dum or petition have been submitted to the civic authorities concerned and if so when.

Mercifully for them this is not a road

that is heavy in vehicle density and there-fore, pedestrians could to an extent put up with the inconvenience caused by the displaced concrete slabs at every second or third step. However, what they are wor-ried about it is that the road may not be free of vehicular traffic in perpetuity and therefore the authorities need to plan keep-ing in the mind the future and the quick pace at which the neighbourhood is wit-nessing development and expansion.

“Yes, we do agree and acknowledge that the pedestrian path here is not as widely used as in some other parts of the Mogappair neighbourhood but that does not mean that the slabs have to remain here in a haphazard man-ner forever. Even otherwise, the storm water drain needs to be covered prop-erly to ensure that debris does not enter the facility and lead to flooding during a good monsoon season. Therefore, we would be extremely happy if the authori-ties concerned turn their attention to this locality and repair the footpath and re-

move the concrete obstruction on the road fringes as well,” said a middle-aged per-son, a resident of Mullai Flats.

An unauthorised dumping spot

An unauthorised garbage dumping spot had sprung up on a road in Mogappair Industrial Estate in Eri Scheme locality. The road leads to the Carmel Christian Church in Mogappair Eri Scheme that is approachable from a left turn on the Church Road.

Sections of local people have begun discard-ing garbage outside the locked gates of a vacant land that has been compounded. One can spot waste generated in households, polythene bags and dry garbage dumped at the spot on a daily basis. There are tell tale signs of the garbage rarely being cleared by conservancy workers engaged by the firm to which the Greater Chen-nai Corporation has awarded the contract for undertaking conservancy operations. Though one does not find garbage by the mounds one could always find wastes lying at the location in the heart of the Mogappair Industrial Estate.

“Indeed this is an eyesore in our locality but there is little we could do about it. And I actu-ally would not venture to blame the conser-vancy workers for this mess here. The workers of the conservancy firm usually clear garbage from designated spots – this means that they will pick up wastes discarded in dustbins placed by the private conservancy firm engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation. So obviously on a daily basis they would head to the designed garbage bins to clear them instead of picking up waste from non-designated spots such as this. It is completely acceptable as otherwise people would keep dumping garbage at random places and expect conservancy workers to clear them,” said Logeswaran, a worker in a lathe unit in the Mogappair Industrial Estate.

Locals said that people ended up dumping garbage there only because the compound was vacant. “They wouldn’t dare to discard waste outside houses, you see. Since no one stops them they find it convenient to empty their household waste here. The problem is that when wind blows, it leads to the polythene sheets flying and landing in nearby places much to the inconve-nience of the people. I hope that someone re-sponsible would look into this issue and effec-tively stop people from throwing or scattering waste at this spot,” said a local resident of Eri Scheme.

Applications invitedThe government has invited applications for

Yogi Babu at it again

It is difficult to remem-ber the last time a Tamil film protagonist had North Indian lineage. Sam An-ton’s fourth directorial, Gurkha, tells us that Baha-dur Babu (Yogi Babu) is from the bloodline of the Gorkhas. In true Sam An-ton style, his ancestry is explained in a sentence when a character calls Ba-hadur a “North Indiavum

North Madrasum sernthu senja kalavaram.”

Said to have been in-spired from the director’s own life, Bahadur’s intro-duction scene as a Gorkha, dancing merrily to Ek Do Teen along with his cous-ins, is followed by him nabbing a few wrongdoers in his style. This style of humour, which Yogi Babu seems to have made his own, is undoubtedly the biggest asset of Gurkha. While his previous films, including his latest as the lead, Dharma Prabhu, re-lied predominantly on one-

liners, Gurkha also relies on situational comedy.

Before failing a police selection test, Bahadur, who even quotes the direc-tor’s own 100 as an inspira-tion, helps his grandmoth-er atop a stool, so he can touch her legs and seek blessings. At the test, Baha-dur, instead of jumping over the hurdles, picks them up and gives it to a baffled inspector, Haris Jayaraj (Ravi Mariya), be-cause he believes it to be a genuine hazard for the runners. Such efficient comedy by Yogi Babu is the result at the hands of a competent director.

Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu 2 is set in the late 80s, but the filmmaking feels even older. The writer-director, Selvashekaran, spends the entire first half on a set-up that could have been con-densed into an effective flashback portion.

The story revolves around Saravanan (Vi-kranth Santhosh, who tries to act), who learns that his seemingly irre-sponsible father, Saamy (Pasupathy, the film’s lone bright spark) was actually a terrific kabbadi player

who had to move out of his village and give up the sport that was his life un-der questionable circum-stances.

So, Saravanan decides to bring his father the glory that eluded him. But under Selvashekaran’s treatment, what should have been an inspiring tale of redemption and an emotional drama about the father-son bond turns into a rarely engaging film with an idiotic romantic track, irritating comedy and ineffective writing.

The Gangai Am-man Nagar Main Road, off Mogap-

pair East, is in urgent need of repairs. The road that branches off the Church Road from near the Maduravoyal New Bridge area leads to the extended areas of Mogap-pair and is a connecting pathway to the western part of the neighbour-hood and Nolambur as well.

Though the condition of the road was not this bad until a year ago, over the past few months it has been battered with no improvement whatsoev-er. Motorists point out that the concrete tar road has given way at many places along the Gangai Amman Nagar Main Road. At some spots, there is no sign of a tar road having existed as the road is covered with loose soil and debris.

“It is definitely not a

pleasant experience to drive on this battered stretch of the Gangai Amman Koi l Main Road. There is hardly any motorable surface in some places and when two vehicles come in op-posite directions there is no scope for easy passage with the drivers of the two vehicles struggling to stay on course on an un-even surface. The condi-tion of this road, in parts, is so bad that it resembles the kutchcha road of a remote village hamlet or

takes up down memory lane to about 20 years ago when roads in Mogappair were under developed and full of potholes,” said Venkatesan, a local resi-dent of Gangai Amman Koil Main Road.

Residents complain that the roads gets bat-tered and their condition goes from bad to worse only due to the absence of timely repair works. “When there is a small pothole, no one appears to be concerned about it. Over time, as vehicles

keep plying, the pothole only gets wider and the damage to infrastructure multiplies. To prevent such a scenario, the gov-ernment officials must examine conducting peri-odic checks along main roads and order immedi-ate repair works so that the battering or roads could be arrested to a large extent. This will also save costs for the government, sometimes running into a few lakh rupees,” suggested Sub-ramani Ayyadurai.

School closed without notice

Ravindra Bharathi Global School, a private CBSE school in the city, has shut, at least for a week, without prior notice following a land dispute. Located at Nerkundram, the school has more than 600 students. On Tuesday morning, when parents arrived to drop their children, they found the entrance locked.

As more and more parents arrived after hear-ing the news, traffic came to a standstill on the narrow Karuneekar Street. Neighbours urged students and parents to disperse so that vehicles could move. Some parents broke open the lock and entered the school premises. The Koy-ambedu police had to pacify the parents.

Police said the school management did not own the land and it was leased out to them. The land owner had asked the management to return the plot and vacate the premises since they did not pay a portion of lease amount as mentioned in the agreement. Since the school did not pay the pending amount, the owner locked the front entrance.

It is learnt that notices were issued to all CBSE schools in the city that do not own land and a year’s time was giv-en. If they had not rectified it then the government will not issue no objection certificate.
