Villivakkam seat earnsdubious distinction in TN polls

The Villivakkam con-stituency, in which parts of the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood falls, has earned the dubious distinction of having the least voter turn-out in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections held on April 6. The constituency, which has an electorate size of 2,55,278 saw just 55.92% of voters turning up at polling booths to ex-ercise their franchise, ac-cording to the final polling figures released by the Election Commission of India on Friday.

As per data, the con-stituency has 1,25,082 male electors, 1,30,133 fe-male electors and 63 elec-tors belonging to the third gender. However, only 71,594 men and 71,144 women voters actually cast their votes. The constitu-ency also witnessed only a lone transgender casting her vote. “This is indeed a

dubious distinction. I wish more people had visited polling booths to cast their votes to elect a Member of Legislative Assembly,” said a voter in the constituency.

In the neighbourhood, Anna Nagar was the con-stituency which saw the second least enthusiasm from voters with only 57.33% of the to ta l 2,86,039 electorate exercis-ing its democratic duty. Of the 1,40,230 eligible male electors, only 81,604 ar-rived at the polling booths. Among the 1,45,722 eligi-ble women voters, only 82,374 got themselves inked. As many as 17 of the 87 eligible electors from the third gender cast their votes in Anna Nagar.

In Maduravoyal where Rural Industries Minister Benjamin sought re-elec-tion, the voter turnout was only 60.30%. The con-stituency has a male elec-torate of 2,27,828; female electorate size of 2,24,087

and third gender electors account for 146 voters. But on the polling day only 2,72,595 votes were polled which included those cast by 1,39,351 men, 1,33,236 women and eight transgenders.

As per the polling data, Ambattur constituency witnessed the highest turn-out of 62.01% in the neigh-bourhood. Records show that of the 1,92,029 eligible male voters, 1,23,251 took the effort of going to the polling booths to exercise their choice in the con-stituency. Among the 1,92,112 eligible female voters 1,15,019 turned up to cast their votes. As for members of the third gen-der in Ambattur constitu-ency, only two of the eli-gible 94 electors exercised their franchise.

On May 2, the voters will get to know who their legislators from these con-stituencies in the neigh-bourhood are. For representation purpose

In a move to prevent asphyxiation deaths while cleaning septic tanks, the Chennai Metropolitan Wa-ter Supply and Sewerage Board issued an order pro-hibiting individuals and contractors from undertak-ing the work.

Those violating the or-der would face action. Residents in the city should not clean the blockage in sewer lines and other re-lated works by themselves or by appointing contrac-

tors. All cleaning and maintenance works related to sewer lines should be informed to the Metro Water and works should be done only through the board, the order said.

It also warned house

owners and tenants, own-ers of private organisa-tions, hotels, lodges, com-mercial establishments, theatres and contractors of action if any worker dies due to asphyxiation while cleaning sewer lines. As per a Supreme Court order, owners should provide Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family of the deceased.

Metro Water directed residents to contact the head office number (4567 4567) that functions 24x7 to alert sewer blocks in houses or in public places.

Water, drainage works in progress on Eri Salai

The Greater Chennai Corpora-tion has resumed executing its In-tegrated Storm Water Drainage project in the Eri Salai neighbour-hood in Mogappair. Presently work is on at two places in the locality.

One of the work spots is on Eri Salai, a few hundred metres away from the Church Street end. Due to the execution of the work, an iron barricade has been placed on the middle of the road. A flex ban-ner tied to the barricade mentions that water and drainage works are in progress on the stretch. Conse-quently, entry of vehicles has been prohibited on the stretch and the same has been conveyed in the flex banner.

However, local residents say that the prohibition on vehicle entry is not being adhered to strictly. “I have seen vehicles swerving near the barricade and proceeding towards the road that leads to Kavimani Salai from here, ignore the ‘no en-try’ sign on the flex banner tied to the iron barricade. May be the au-thorities must install a ‘No Entry’ board right at the entrance to the road for effective compliance,” a resident said.

Locals also recalled that this is not the first time that such a civic work was being undertaken on Eri Salai. They reminded that over a year ago too contractors of the Greater Chennai Corporation had undertaken similar work on the stretch.

Further down the road, work on the Integrated Storm Water Drain-age project is being undertaken near the Seventh Block, 10th Street. This area falls under Zone 7 and Ward 91 of the Greater Chennai Corpo-ration.

“Contractors engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation had started the digging operation on the street recently. We hope that they would complete the work at the earliest so that local residents are not put to prolonged inconve-nience,” said Gopalasamy, who identified himself as a resident of Seventh Block in Mogappair East.

Some of the residents pointed to the recent proposal of the Greater Chennai Corporation to form local committees to redress complaints of residents who have issues with Integrated Storm Water Drainage Project on the East Coast Road in south Chennai and said a similar plan could be considered here too.

Corporation to penalise violators of Covid protocolsWith the rise in new

covid-19 cases, the Greater Chennai Corporation has fixed a daily target of col-lecting Rs 10 lakh from those who violate safety protocols. According to an order issued by the Corpo-ration Commissioner dif-ferent areas have been giv-en different targets for col-lection of penalties. Tiru-

vottiyur and Manali have been given the lowest daily target of Rs 20,000.

Zonal officers should ensure the collection of fine amounts and deposit it into the civic body exche-quer then and there. As per a government order, Rs 500 will be collected from the persons violating quaran-tine measures, spitting in

public places, violation of social distancing norms, non-adherence of contain-ment guidelines, while not wearing masks properly would attract a fine of Rs 200. Also, Rs 5,000 will be collected from salons, spa, gymnasiums, commercial establishments and other public places for violating standard operating proce-

dures. If the norms are vio-lated for a second time, the facility would be sealed, the order said.

It is learnt that for the first few days they would advise road users, and may not slap cases.

An appeal not to dump waste near water tank

An appeal has been made to residents of the neighbourhood not to dump wastes near drinking water tanks. One such ap-peal has been made in Srinivasa Nagar Anna Street in Mogappair near Officers Colony.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has tied up a flex banner adjacent to a tank in which drinking water is supplied stating that the location is used for supplying drinking water and hence people should not throw garbage their or other wastes there. Those violating the appeal shall be fined, the flex banner

placed in the locality which falls under the jurisdiction of the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Ward 89 in Division 19 and Zone 7 said. A man passing by the area was heard lamenting “Look what stage we have all come to. We now have to place banners appealing to people not to defile places where drinking wa-ter is supplied. These are basic civic sense expected from a human being. Where are we headed? In the good old days, com-mon sense prevai led among people and they never did anything that would affect the common good.”

Locals explained that

the warning banner had been necessitated because some people had dumped waste in the locality. Even now an old rusting tricycle can be seen at the spot. “Since the water tank, meant for supplying drink-ing water, is located just at the beginning of the Srini-vasa Nagar Anna Street, people conveniently used to discard all sorts of waste here,” said one of the resi-dents in the area. “They did not even realise how women would fill pots with drinking water when they were surrounded with filthy garbage. Now the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion has put up this flex banner to dissuade such people who lack civic sense from resorting to the dis-gusting practice of dump-ing garbage at random places, most of all next to a water tank that supplied drinking water,” said the resident, who wished not to be identified.

Residents felt that if a few of those who dump garbage at random spots are fined at regular inter-vals then this practice would come to an end.

Actor Sathish, who has been part of many successful movies as a comedian, is now going to make his debut as hero with a new film, which is going to be produced by Bigil producer Kalpathi S Agoram. Pavithra Lakshmi of Cooku With Komali fame will be making her silver screen debut with this project, and will be playing the leading lady.

George Mariyan (of Kaithi fame), mu-sic composer Ganesh (of the Shankar-

Ganesh duo), Ilavarasu, Livingston, Gnanasambanthan and Sriman among others are part of this movie’s cast.

Kishore Rajkumar, who has directed quite a few award-winning short films and commercials, is making his directorial debut with this movie, and is also writing its story, screenplay and dialogues.

Actor Sivakarthikeyan was the chief guest at the poojai of the film, which hap-pened in Chennai.
