A novel attempt in the neighbourhood of Anna Nagar to encourage people to donate clothes for the needy on the occasion of Deepavali drew some good response from large heart-ed residents but rains end-ed up partially playing spoilsport to the initiative.

A voluntary organisa-tion had placed a wooden rack alongside a public wall near the Post Office on the Collector Nagar-Thiru-mangalam Road close to the Park Road junction to allow people to share the joy of donating goodies for the under privileged. Local

residents said that this was the first time they had seen such an initiative in the locality.

Quite a few residents had actually left clothes in

the rack for the volunteers to pick up and distribute among the needy. Howev-er, the heavy downpour of rains, accompanied by heavy winds, just before

the festival of lights damp-ened the donation spirit. Some of the clothes too were blown to the ground from the rack by the winds.

“I had heard about this

‘Joy of Giving’ initiative and gone to the spot on the eve of Deepavali to donate some clothes. However, I saw that clothes that were presumably left in the rack by some kind hearted souls earlier lying on the ground drenched much. I felt sad and seeing the wet area and returned not knowing where to place the clothes,” said Sundar Francis, a local resident of Anna Nagar Western Extension.

Had nature been kind, the initiative would per-haps have attracted more donors and philanthropists felt some residents. “Since the ground was slushy, people who came in after

the rains did not know where to leave the clothes and goodies and took them away. But overall I must say that this is a good initiative as it also provides for ano-nymity for donors who wish to do service without seeking any publicity,” said a resident of Park Road, who did not wish to be named.

The resident added that since the initiative has be-gun in right earnest it could as well be extended to cover other festivals. “I can immediately think of the approaching Christmas this year and Pongal next year. Any occasion is good for charity,” he said.

In a bid to boost digital payments, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated banks to offer free account-to-account transfers using the Na-tional Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) platform from January 2020.

From July this year, the RBI had waived NEFT processing charges that it imposes on banks with a directive that they pass on the reduction. SBI was the first to announce a waiver of charges for NEFT, Im-mediate Payment Service

Banks to make nEFT free from Jan(IMPS) and Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transactions done using digital channels.

Some banks reduced charges, while others made it free for a section of cus-

tomers. The RBI’s latest directive now forces all banks to waive charges. It comes at a time when the government plans to make electronic toll collection mandatory on national highways using FASTags.

Payments at all toll pla-zas on national highways

will be through FASTag only from December 1. Cash payments will not be accepted. FASTag is a prepaid tag that enables automatic deduction of toll fee and allows the ve-hicle to pass through the plaza without stopping for cash transaction.

Plight of haPless farmersWhen real estate was at

Quite a few roads that were dug up by multiple civic agencies over the past one year in several parts of the neighbourhoods of Mogappair East and Mogappair West have been badly battered turn-ing riding a nightmarish experience for motorists.

Many residents rued that the roads were not re-laid on time to battle the onslaught of rains. The recent spell of rains on the eve of Deepavali, the Fes-tival of Lights, have left these roads filled with slush and have turned them highly slippery. In

fact even for pedestrians walking on the slush filled roads have become a her-culean task. Ironically authorities seemed to have turned a blind eye to mul-tiple reports on the issue that were published in Mogappair Mail in the past year too.

“These roads were dug up by contractors engaged by various civic agencies for undertaking infrastruc-ture upgrades in the local-ity. Sadly far from upgrad-ing the quality of lives, these civic works have made it worse for us. We are unable to use the roads, especially after the recent spell of rains. Though we

are living in an urban neighbourhood, the condi-tion of the roads post-rains is such that it resembles the kutchcha road of the inte-rior villages,” lamented

Boopathy, a resident of an independent house off Electricity Board Road in Mogappair East.

“I am not even able to walk across from my

house to the nearby provi-sions shops to buy essen-tials for the household as loose soil has covered the road surface. It is not just that I would end up dirty-

If only authorities had taken precautions and re-laid the road before the monsoons we wouldn’t have encoun-tered the problem. Residents hoped that at least officials of the Great-er Chennai Corporation would wake up to the real-ity now and fill the bat-tered roads with construc-tion debris as a temporary measure before undertak-ing works to lay new roads, which is a longer process.

Shoppers going to mul-tiple commercial establish-ments and hospitals on Second Avenue in Anna Nagar are facing difficulty in walking on the pedes-trian path as the concrete platform is heavily dam-aged at many places on the stretch.

Several commercial complexes including tex-tile shops, restaurants and bakeries dot the Second Avenue Road on either sides. On the left hand side – i.e. from Anna Nagar Roundtana towards Thi-rumangalam Junction – shoppers encounter badly damaged platforms at different spots.

"The Second Avenue witnesses heavy shopping activity especially in the evenings. That's when people come to shop. The road margins have been earmarked for parking of vehicles and much of the space is occupied by cars including hatchbacks, se-dans and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV). And often you can spot two-wheelers

too being illegal parked on the platforms that are meant for pedestrians to walk. And now you have these broken and uneven concrete platform slabs that are posing a new hurdle for shoppers who traverse by foot," said Shy-am K Raj, a resident of 12th Main Road in Anna Nagar.

Shoppers, especially those accompanied by children and the elderly, are the worst hit due to this. "We really have to struggle to walk on this platform as the surface is extremely uneven with many broken slabs lying everywhere. Children find it difficult to hold our hands and walk and we have to be watchful of them. Imagine walking with shopping bags on one hand and holding the child's hand on the other and keeping your eyes glued to the ground to avoid hitting a sharp edge of a concrete slab," said his wife Indumathi Shyam.

According to regular shoppers, some of these slabs have broken due to

their poor quality and some because of parking of two wheeler on them. "Each time someone puts the middle stand, it knocks off some part of the con-crete," claimed a shopper.

"Considering that this is a very busy shopping zone and there is no space to walk on the road where you find parked vehicles and speeding cars, the authorities concerned must step in quickly and replace the broken slabs so that pedestrians can walk without any concerns," she added.
