A senior citizen, re-siding in an apart-ment on Padikup-

pam Road off the Mogap-pair-Ambattur Estate Road, recently fell victim to phish-ing and ended up losing over Rs 1.90 lakh to an online fraudster.

The victim, Dinakar, was maintaining joint savings bank accounts with the State Bank of In-

dia’s Anna Nagar West branch near Blue Star. He

also held a credit card.

According to sources, in the f irst week of March, Dinakar,

a long-time account holder in the bank, had received a phone call from a mysteri-ous person who claimed to be calling from the Reserve Bank of India. The caller, who managed to get hold of some basic information on his bank account, told him that his joint accounts held in the name of himself, his wife and daughter, would be frozen immedi-ately as the bank had re-fused to give some manda-tory details.

“The caller told Dinakar that if he wanted his ac-counts to remain operative he would have to give de-tails of his Aadhaar Num-ber, account details and credit card numbers. The man spoke in fluent Eng-

lish. Believing him Dinakar parted with all the informa-tion,” a source said.

Using this information, the fraudster managed to deactivate Dinakar’s mobile phone number and ob-tained a new SIM card us-ing which he reset the pass-word for banking online transactions. “Within no time, the fraudster with-drew over Rs 1.90 lakh from two joint bank accounts and one credit card through dif-ferent online transactions. Most of the money was transferred to digital wallets of various companies,” the source added.

Dinakar was not aware of the transactions and when his mobile phone was deactivated he suspected

something fishy and ap-proached the bank where the fraud came to light.

The victim has filed a police complaint, which is being handled by the Cyber Cell.

An official at the SBI, Anna Nagar West Branch, said, “Our advice to cus-tomers has always been not to share any information on the accounts or credit/debit card held by them to anyone who calls over phone or e-mail. If they receive any calls / mails, they should immediately approach the bank. As a matter of policy, we never call any customers over phone or mail asking them to part with any account related information.”

The Transport De-partment has made it mandatory for the

Regional Transport Offi-cers (RTOs) in the State to compulsorily obtain, from vehicle owners, details including mobile number, Aad-haar and PAN numbers while registering new vehicles.

A circular was re-leased to all RTOs to get the data along with regis-tration forms from owners wanting to register new vehicles.

The process of obtaining the data was part of a larg-er goal of upgrading to the new software. He said the personal data to be re-ceived from vehicle owners

was also to trace the own-ers of the vehicles for secu-rity purposes and to pre-vent any anti-social activi-ties. The collection of data for registering new vehicles

started last Wednes-day itself.While a

A fire broke out in the godown of a home appliances firm, at Vana-garam on Wednesday afternoon, damaging goods worth around Rs 17 lakh, police said. An electric short circuit is believed to have caused the blaze. There was no casualty. “Around eight fire tenders took about five hours to douse the fire,” said a fire and rescue officer.

Police said the staff first noticed the fumes and in few minutes the fire spread to the entire godown burning the stored goods. As the roofs were of asbestos sheets and there were many home appliances including induction stoves, air cool-ers and air conditioner, they caught fire easily. The employees were

immediately evacuated from the company and the power supply to the godown was turned off. Fire and rescue services from Ambattur, Maduravoyal, Koyambedu, Poona-mallee, JJ Nagar and Kilpauk struggled hard to put off the blaze, said the fire rescue officer.

Most passers-by at Maduravoyal bypass saw thick black fumes bil-lowing from the godown. Many had taken videos and soon went viral on social media. The incident took place at a spot that was sur-rounded by many chemical firms but the fire and rescue officials saw to that it did not spread.

A case has been registered with the Maduravoyal police station.

The ongoing digging of roads at various parts of Mogappair East for

constructing storm water drains ahead of the next mon-soon season is having an unex-pected fallout for some resi-dents – leaving them without electricity and burning a hole in their pockets.

The giant excavating ma-chines deployed by the contrac-tor engaged by the Corporation of Chennai to dig the roads have been damaging under-ground electricity cables that supply power to adjoining homes disconnecting power supply in the pro-cess. In the last one-month at least two residents of Ori Salai have been subjected to unnecessary trou-ble because of such haphazard digging without proper expertise.

More than a fortnight ago, while excavating the earth from one stretch of Ori Salai, the operator of the JCB machine ended up damaging the power cables leading to the house of Doraiswamy, a senior citizen and resident of Fifth Block. “Suddenly power supply to my house alone was disconnected. On probing, I found out that the excavator had damaged the power cables. I immediately complained to the workers engaged in the digging opera-tions. I then called the Electric-ity Board officials, who said that I had to bear the expenses for relaying the cable. Those involved in the digging opera-

tions said they did not have money and asked me to bear the expenses and said they would reimburse the money. I spent nearly Rs 1,500 on the labour and materials. But to this day the workers who dam-aged the cables have not repaid the money to me despite re-peated calls,” he complained.

Likewise, another resident on Tenth Block found to his dismay that power supply to his house was disconnected a week ago.

He immediately confronted the workers who damaged the cables and threatened them that he would take action against them if they did not

replace the cables. In his case, the workers felt intim-idated and paid money for the ma-terial and labour. But Doriaswamy is now searching for the contractor to get back his money.

Apply it on the affected areas us-ing a spatula and keep it for about 20-25 minutes. Wash it off with cold water, rubbing in circular motion. Wondering how it works? Well, sugar is a natural ex-foliating agent, and warm sugar sticks to your hair, not

skin. Lemon juice works as a natural (and cheap) bleach for the skin hair, and helps to lighten the skin tone. Say bye to the painful facial waxing!

lEMon And HonEy: This is another method to replace waxing. Start with

mixing two tablespoons of sugar and lemon juice, and one tablespoon of honey. Heat the mixture for about three minutes and add water to make the mixture thin-ner, if required. Once the paste cools down, apply corn-starch on the affected ar-eas and spread the paste in the direction of hair growth. Next, use a waxing strip or a cotton cloth, and pull the hair out in the opposite direction of growth. Honey helps in mois-turising the skin, so this meth-od is highly recommended for dry skin.

oATMEAl And bAnAnA: Blend two tablespoons of oatmeal with a ripe ba-

nana, and apply this paste on affected areas. Massage for 15 minutes, and wash it off with cool water. Oat-meal makes a great, hydrating scrub and is loaded with antioxidants that helps remove redness from your skin.

Apart from removing facial hair, this paste also gives glowing skin.

PoTATo And lEnTil: Mix a tablespoon of honey, lemon juice each with

five tablespoons of potato juice. Meanwhile, grind the lentils (soaked overnight) to a smooth paste. Add all the ingredients and apply the mixture for about 20 minutes on the affected area. Wash it off once it is completely dry. This paste makes a thin crust that helps

in hair removal. Plus, potato helps in bleaching the hair, making them less visible.

Egg wHiTE And Corn-STArCH: Mix a tablespoon each of

corn-starch and sugar with egg white. Apply this mixture on the areas where you have un-wanted hair and peel it off once

it is dry. Quite simple, isn’t it? Egg white is sticky, and forms a thin film on skin when combined with sugar and corn-starch. This method is not suitable for acne prone skin as egg white contains Vitamin A which may lead to breakouts.

The absence of a right turn at the end of Shanti Colony (from the Anna Nagar Police Station end) is causing inconvenience to hundreds of car drivers and motorists on a daily basis. The Shanti Colony stretch, which was one-way from near Pazhamudhir Cho-lai, was thrown open for two way traffic nearly two months ago after the Anna Nagar Roundtana-Thirumangalam road was opened for double way usage.

From then on, the Chen-nai City Traffic Police, had placed a ‘No Right Turn’ sign board at the end of Shanti colony. As a re-sult of this, motorists pro-ceeding on the stretch and travelling towards Anna Arch are unable to take a right turn. Instead they are forced to take a left

turn and proceed towards Anna Nagar Roundtana and then take a ‘U-Turn’ to reach Anna Arch.

“More than six years ago when two-way traf-fic was allowed on both Thirumangalam-Round-tana stretch and the Shanti Colony stretch, there used to be a traffic signal at this junction. Motorists were able to take both right and left turns at this junction and proceed to their respective destina-tions without any hassle,” recalls Thatanathan, an elderly man, familiar with the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood’s evolution. “Whereas now, with the same two-way traffic on both these stretches be-ing restored, they have blocked the right turn here needlessly inconveniencing people,” he adds.

According to Rahamat, a motorist who uses the

stretch regularly, “It is an unnecessary hassle during peak hours for us. We have to take a left turn and then proceed towards the right end of the road to take a U-Turn. It is very difficult because of the traffic that proceeds from Anna Arch to Roundtana at the same time. This can lead to ac-cidents.”

Rahamat says the Traf-fic Police should instead install a signal and regulate traffic flow towards the right to Anna Arch. “That would indeed be of great help to hundreds of mo-torists who use this road,” he adds.
